Fcp - ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing

how much do these (ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing) specs play a role in fcp's performance? I hear conflicting opinions about it's utilization of the 64 bit processor(s). some say yes some say no. is ram speed from one rev to the next that much different, particularly in the last two G5's? Or, is the amount of ram and the processor type the most important considerations in optimizing fcp performance? thanks for your help!

SD/SDI card is to bring in video material in formats other than DV. If all you will ever work in is DV or HDV, firewire only is fine. If you want to work with non-DV formats and without expansion slots, you need to look into something like the AJA io to do your conversion and bring it down firewire. This solution has its own potential problems when the device and the hard drives are on the same bus.
You need a second drive just for media. On the Powermac you simply add a second internal drive. This is not possible on the iMac - an external firewire drive is the only option. This by itself is not an issue. Most people who do this with any seriousness end up adding a series of external hard drives to deal with the mass of media.
The limiting factor is that you only have one firewire bus (all macs have only one firewire bus) and if you run into problems with the camera (or VTR or AJA io) & hard drives not cooperating on one bus, you have no option to fix it. On the iMac, you have no option to add in a card to create a second firewire bus in the system.
So yes, the people at the store are correct. You can make the iMac work (with an external firewire drive). However, if you run into problems, you have severely limited options to mediate them. What I was trying to suggest is some things work better. An analogy might be, If I need to drive nails, the handle of a screwdriver can be made to work, but I should not be surprised if it does it badly and breaks when pushed hard.
good luck.

  • Bus Speed and Ram Speed Question..thanks

I have recently purchased my first mac! I purchased a refurb but I noticed that the one I purchased has bus speed of 800mhz and the ram has 667mhz. (I did get a 320g hard drive vs a 250g and a 256mb graphics card vs a 128mb) The other one has bus speed of 1066mhz and ram speed has 800mhz. Am I going to notice a difference in the bus/ram speed difference or just stay with the one I purchased?
    thanks

I don't think you will notice a difference. Other system factors (such as video card, system CPU clock speed, amount of RAM installed, speed of hard drive, etc.) will most likely overwhelm any noticeable difference cause by the slower bus speed.
If the price of the refurb was good, you should keep it. I have an online Apple Store refurb myself, and although I know that the latest iMacs are a bit faster, I don't see how that extra speed will be of great benefit to me. I'm much happier with the money I saved on the refurb compared to a new iMac.

  • MBP 13" RAM Upgrade - different BUS speed

    Dear all,
I am currently using MBP 13" Mid 2010, with 4GB RAM 1067Mhz, was thinking to upgrade to 8GB. My question is, instead of upgrading to 8GB with the same bus speed of 1067MHz, is it possible that this MBP supports 8GB 1333MHz? Other words, can this MBP supports bus speed of 1333MHz?
    Thanks.

If it works you wont see any increase in speed. The operative words are "if it works." If your MBP supports 1067 then that's all you're going to get. Don't waste your time, effort and $.

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.

  • FCP 10.1 slow timeline and editing - Any suggestions to improve speed?

Recently updated to  OS X 10.9.1 and FCP 10.1. Now experiencing very slow editing and movement in timeline. FCP is responding some 2 to 5 seconds after providing an editing command. The slowest response is to scrolling in the timeline  - 2 finger scroll does not respond for up to 10 seconds after doing it.
Render times are fine and similar to previous FCP X versions.
Never had this problem in previous versions of FCP X.
So far I have done the following things based on forums and a call to apple support(?).
    Deleted all plug ins.
Started from scratch a project that I was half way through and imported all clips from scratch to a new Library (external Hard Drive).
Deleted FCP and reinstalled including deleting all preferences.
Timeline is quick in the early stages of the project but gets slower as I progress - about 3 minutes into my project now (approx 200 clips) and editing time is becoming impossible.
Am using Mac Book Pro with 2.5 GhzIntel Core i7, 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.
Anyone able to assist with further suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Ian and Russ
    Thanks for your interest.
Hard drive is 500GB of which I have used approx 300GB. I am using an external hard drive for this project.Footage is from Canon 7D/70D which is H.264 which is the same as other successful projects.
Yes I do have a number of photos (say 30 @ 18mp) that I am using as part of the project although I have used these before in previous versions of FCP X without impact.
Tried activity monitor (first time I had used it).
When scrowling through time line (one of the problem activities) memory does not move much- Real memory approx 925mb, Virtual memory 6GB, shared memory 44mb, Private memory 75mb. Interstingly though when performing this task CPU usage goes > 100% and averages 130%.
Does this help with any potential diagnostics and solutions?
    Thanks

  • 2 Issues: Low Bus Speed and Visable Hairline on LCD

I noticed on the system properties window that after the P8400 @ 2.26Ghz it has the bus speed at 791Mhz.  I thought it is suppose to be at 1033Mhz.  Is there anyway to check if it's a settings issue or if the processor is defective?
Also on the LCD display there seems to be a 2 cm long hairline slightly arcing from near the bottom right edge.  I though it to be a scratch but upon closer inspection the mark appears to be behind the surface.  I'm not sure how that could have happened but I'm curious as to what it is.
I know the care instructions say not to pick up the laptop from the screen, but I do pick it up sideways (lid closed, pick up as you would a tray).  Is that considered a nad idea?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

if the LCD is not damaged by you, and the hairline is due to some manufacturing defect, then you can get it repaired under warranty by Lenovo.

  • What is the difference between USB bus and USB high-speed bus?

anything that i plug into the USB ports that registers in the USB high-speed bus does not show up on the desktop. i have tried different devices and none work when the system profiler show them in the high-speed bus. anything i plug into the USB that registers in USB bus works just fine. what is going on here?

I've got a couple of SanDisk memory card readers. Nothing shows up on the desktop until a formatted card is inserted in the reader. If it's not formatted, I believe it can be formatted in Disk Utility.

  • About MSI ms-7255 and bus speed

    cpu: intel E6600
    memory: Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2 1024
Mobo: MSI ms-7255 chipset VIA P4M890
    Hiper Type-R 580W
I bought the MSI mobo and a E6600 today.
I've tried to overclock but everytime I set the bus speed higher then 295mhz I get a warning message when i reboot the computer.
So my friend said 'Hey, Lets flash your bios', so i did that with MSI live update, and everytime i try to overclock my system it wont start so i have to clear the bios (Can't even see anything on my lcd screen).
Btw, i know its not a good mobo to overclock, but atleast it should go about 3ghz or higher.
Anyone now how i can fix this?

read the moan guide. We don't know what you have.

  • Bus Speed on LimeBook

This Lime iBook is slowing down more and more as I add stuff to it. I'm wondering how much bus speed has to do with it, accessing and all that. I perform all the regular maintenance and use macJanitor also. Is it just a consequence of older technology and slow processor speeds? Mine is the SE with 466 mhz CPU.

RichardIf you are using more and more of your Hard Disk space the system is limited on the amount of virtual memory it can use. It is advisable to leave at least 10% of your hard disk free. I assume you are using Mac OS 9 (this was what would have been supplied with your Lime iBook originally. The hard disk could also do with de-fragmenting now and again under OS 9. (Although you shouldn't do this if you do have OS X installed.) You can tell the bus speed of a mac by looking in the System Profiler. The Processor speed is also a good hint. Your processor is 466. 466/66.67 = 7. This is the multiplier (usually an integer). If you go to the Control Panel and Energy Saver there is an option check box which can reduce the multiplier to 5.5 ... 5.5x 66.67 = 366MHz - this saves battery power - only available on the 466 iBooks and Powerbooks. Many of the overclocking mods for Macs involve changing the multipier - but this involves serious hardcore soldering so it's not an option unless Apple builds in the option.
To get your iBook to go fast I recommend you:
Up your RAM to the maximum (576Mb)
Upgrade the Hard Disk or purchase a Firewire External Drive.
My other tip would be to not buy brand new software - it invariably requires more processing power (as it is aimed at today's machines). Look out for the same (geniune) software but older versions on eBay.

  • G4 Bus Speed

I'm running a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and was wondering if there's any way to update the bus speed? currently I've got 167 MHz.
presumably there would be no point in updating my processor from 1.25 GHz with 167 bus speed?
    cheers,
    Liam

is it all pretty much governed by bus speed?
Of course, bus speed is a limiting factor, though processor speed, cache size/location of cache are equally as, or more, important. RAM controller speed, and CAS rating of memory chips, amount of memory, GPU speed, and VRAM clock also contribute to system performance/limitations.
Faster processor means faster handling of data, resulting in faster system response.
Dual processors allow for additional data threads to be processed simultaneously, resulting in faster system performance.
A larger cache, closer to the processor (L2 vs. L3) allows for a greater amount of data to be buffered (temporary storage) within easy reach of the processor, resulting in faster system performance.
A slow bus can benefit from a faster processor, this is a given. A larger L2 and/or L3 cache also increases performance, this is proven.
How much of an improvement all of this makes, depends on the overall configuration of a system, and from where the upgrading began. In the case of a 400mhz system going to a dual 1.8ghz processor, the difference is around 400-500% improvement. Depending on the process/application, though, the bus will, in fact cause the processor to slow down, while waiting for the rest of the system to "catch up", if you will...
In the case of a 1.25ghz machine moving to a dual 1.42. with the exception of multi-tasking, the overall improvement in performance will be slight, due to the slight increase in processor speed. But, with multi-tasking, video, graphics intensive work, etc., a dual processor, even of the same speed, will greatly improve the performance by virtue of the multi processing ability of the dual. This is why current systems have moved to multiple multi-core processors. Here lies the potential for greatly improved performance and speed.
But, again, all system components need to be optimized for optimal performance. Back to the bus issue, in the end, the slower (relatively speaking) bus of a G4 will be the ultimate limiting factor of a
    machines performance.
Let us not forget, though, the Sawtooth was once considered a "Super Computer" and exports were initially seen as a national security issue. The MDD is a further refined/enhanced machine, and has good life left in it, even in todays "speed is everything" mentality.
do you reckon upgrading the CPU will make much difference
Keeping the above discussion in mind, browse the database at XBench, and you can see how various processors compare in performance in the MDD.
I will say that moving from a single to a dual processor, of higher speed, can be seen as a worthwhile upgrade.

  • How can I determine Bus Speed

    Hi all
    Dumb question #2.
The beast is a G4 MDD with dual 450MHz chips and the model number is M5183 and the machine number as per System Profiler is 406. Serial number is SG03402HK5W
    Got all that.
I need to determine Bus Speed so I can buy the proper Ram Cards for this machine. It was supplies from the eBay seller with PC133 chips in there and surprisingly enough it runs 9.2.1 just fine.
How can I determine whether my machine is a 100MHz or 133MHz.
I suspect my Machine is not an MMD but a Gigabit Ethernet with dual 450 processors. Is this correct?
    John Fenn

You can find all the G4 specs here to identify your machine and get the RAM specs and bus speed.

  • Clocking bus speed

I know that on the beige desktop 266mhz apple computers you can clock the bus speed from 66mhz to above 80mhz, so how exactley do I go about this?

This page has the jumper settings and some discussion:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3_OC/tims.html
If your RAM is only PC-66, running the bus faster than 66 MHz runs it faster than its specified and tested speed. This may make it flaky. It is very difficult to decide what the problem is when your memory is flaky.
If you are considering expanding your memory, using the faster memory from the Blue & White G3, which is otherwise identical, may put your mind at ease about memory problems.
Overclocking can sometimes improve performance 5, 10, or 15 percent. It can also break things, so it is not something to try on the Mac you need every day. It can make things unreliable. If you really need a big speedup, you should think about a newer old Mac.
If you are starting with a 266, you can buy cast-off processors from faster G3 Macs pretty cheaply. a 300 MHz with a bigger cache can often be had on eBay for US$35 or less.

  • Speeding up Working and Rendering

I'm using an older Mac Pro 3,1 (quad core, 2.8 ghz, 16 Gb ram) with AE CS6. I know about the nVidia cards, and plan to upgrade to one of those when I can, but in the mean time ...
Rastered files from Photoshop (like 20 images all less than 450px X 450px) all but brings AE to its knees here (10 images 3D layers, 10 more not 3D). Just moving things around on the screen for desired placement takes about 65 seconds for screen refresh (at full size 1920x1080 and 1/3 resolution), which means placing 10 images with accuracy can take an hour. Photoshop, by comparison (at 64-bit) is a speed-demon on this machine. Not so After Effects, particularly with rastered imagery. It's taking over a minute to preview each frame (1/2 size at 1/4 rez), and about 15 minutes to render each frame at full size, which means it's going to take 24 hours to get 4 seconds at 24pfs.
I've read some blogs and helpfile suggestions on how to speed up workflow, and am integrating those principles as I go, but is this all-day-long slowness with rastered stills what I should expect from After Effects? Or are there other non-hardware things I can do to speed things up?

I'm going to take that as good news, and a clear indication I'm doing something stupid.
Here is a typical image set, each from a layer in a larger many-layered Ps file (flattened and loaded into AE as one flat layer each with NO Fx): Letter, and Shadow
The third is showing how the two images end up together in AE.
This is a very simple animation of letters "falling down" to form a word. There are 10 letters, and 10 corresponding shadows. Each letter is "around" 450x450, with a shadow element of the same size. The color letters are each on a 3D layer, and each "shadow" is on a normal layer, making 20 layers total. They are at 2/3 size when at rest, but a bit larger as they begin to fall, hence the larger rez. The shadow has changing gaussian blur and opacity as the color letter moves toward it. There is one set of keyframes for the first letter and its shadow, and expressions with time-offset for all the other letters and shadows.
It rendered all night, and now I have 31 frames ...
What else can I tell you?

  • FCP clip time remapping / speed ramping question re realtime after changes?

    Hello All,
My first post here! I tried searches for this topic but didn't find....
I wasted hours today messing with the keyframe editor to try and ramp parts of a single clip... first time using this feature and couldn't follow the manual! way too difficult to grasp without fluency in 'techygeekconfusic' lingo. Anyway, I don't think the topic was covered from what I read in my version of the manual.
So I went straight for the keyframe editor graphic display under the clip in timeframe and put in a few points with the pen tool (using time graph blue line) and seemed to be going great until I realised that the segments in the single clip (ten minutes long) that I was adjusting were affecting what came after - ie slowing down the remainder of the clip. And that was all I could get from my manual that this happened without any explanation about stopping it happen by letting the outpoint of the clip readjust automatically for the changes made to that part of clip so that altered clip would be shorter in timeline...
I then tried again from the start but noting the minus time on pentool arrow when I slid each keyframe point back and subtracting it from the duration in motion tab and that seemed to work for a while...
but God bless my little brain! what I really wanted to happen - for the blasted thing to readjust itself automatically after I had adjusted a segment of the clip so that the remaining non-adjusted part would play in realtime with a new shorter outpoint in the sequence timeline - just couldn't be realised in my little brain or in the 'user friendly' control panels of FCP.
I tried to get hold of the 'bezier' point at the end of clip and drag forward at the same rate as each change but could'nt get hold of it! I tried to put two points with pen tool at same time but couldn't isolate them from one another to create four points for adjustment without having still frames between.. blah blah.. I tried to get snapping to the pen tool points for further control but couldn't... duh!
Please! how do you do it! obviously I have limited intelligence but I need to do this now. I want to adjust the 10 minute clip (DVCproHD 720p24N format - not that this should matter as my sequence settings are same) adjust the clip at maybe 10 different places so that it ramps in speed to cover up some boring areas and then back to normal speed after the changes - not back to some slo mo **! speed.
I tried cutting with the razor tool to isolate and that didn't work either and other analogue brain type stuff ok I know you are laughing at me now but please help?!! I'm pretty new to this stuff, give me the old reliable Steenbeck and a few real bins and strips of film hanging on clothes pegs and I'll be ok...
Help will be most gratefully appreciated!!!!!!!!

Andy did a very good job explaining the underlying problem with the time remap tool.
The key thing to remember is the first and last frame are fixed in time. If you speed up the clip, time after that keyframe will have to slow down to compensate. Imagine the clip is a rubber band that has been cut so that it is a long string-like form. Now imagine anchoring each end of it with a push pin to a board. If you grab a point on the band and pull it toward one of the pins, the part of the band on the side you are pulling away from the anchor will stretch (run slower) and the side you are pulling toward will bunch up (run faster). But, when all is done, the start and end will still be at the fixed points.
The way I've worked through this is to make a general guesstimate of how long the clip will be once all the ramping is complete. For example, I want the clip to start at normal (100%) speed and ramp up to 300% and back down to 100%. I might start with a clip having a constant speed of 200% and then change it to variable and play with it. The key concept is if you can get the overall LENGTH to where it should be, the rest works out fine.
I have repeatedly asked in the FEEDBACK/New Features page that they add a toggle to the speed/time remap tools. This toggle should allow you decide whether the playback TIME for the clip should be fixed or flexible.
For example, if you were working with a 4 second clip and wish to slow it down by 50% -
If 'Maintain Time' is toggled ON, when you decrease the speed of clip by 50% - the clip will still play for 4 sec (but will show only half the total frames).
If the toggle is OFF, the 4 sec clip will now play for 8 sec and will display all the frames.
Where this concept becomes really powerful is when it's applied to time remap. If you have 'Maintain time' toggled OFF, as you adjust speed, the end point of the clip will float in time. If you increase the speed, the overall time of the clip will shrink. If you slow it down, the end point moves out in time.
We need to keep asking ...
