FCP rendering AVI video is taking forever, is this normal?

Hi all,
I am rendering some HD video files.  Each are about 1 to 2 GB each.  Last night it took this computer almost 9 hours to render just one of these 2 GB files.  Is this normal or do I need to be on the fast track to a genius appointment?
regards,
Mike

You don't mention what format "some HD files" are being brought in as...
If you are capturing HDV (for example) your output could be 5-7X that required if you were working with ProRes.
Moral: If the work was faster on a 2.0GHz MacBook, you're on the lower fringe of the minimum processor requirements. Use the tools Apple provides (like ProRes) to maximumize your efficiency, but make a more powerful system a priority if you're going to be doing much of this kind of work.

  • Archive and install is taking forever-is this normal?

Due to ongoing problems with spinning beach balls on my Intel iMac (see my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1413753&tstart=0), I decided to just archive and install late last night to see if that would help. Ten hours later, the install is still going ... and it's telling me there are more than 11 hours to go! (As I type this, on my old iMac G3, it's 61% done writing files.) This is a bare-bones reinstall, mind you—just the system and some HP printer drivers.
As I stated in the other post, my RAM is maxed out, and neither Disk Utility nor DiskWarrior have been finding any disk/directory/permissions problems (S.M.A.R.T. status consistently shows up as Verified). Apple Hardware Test hasn't turned up anything either, though I haven't let it run in extended mode; PRAM/SMU resets don't seem to have made a difference.
Obviously, something isn't right ... any ideas? Could the hard drive be on the verge of buying the farm despite indications otherwise? Could the RAM be bad? (It's from OWC, by the way.) Or could the motherboard or power supply be about to crap out?

I don't know what you are doing, but to erase the drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button.

  • Apple TV sync is taking forever- Will this happen each time I sync?

I just got a new Apple Tv. I am syncing 12 movies from iTunes and about 650 songs. This is taking forever! My question is, if I add a new movie to iTunes and want to sync it to AppleTv, will it take this long again? If I uncheck the rest of the movies for syncing, will it erase them from the Apple Tv? I do not think I can wait this long each time I want to add a new movie to the Apple Tv. Thanks in advance for you help.

I just bought an Apple TV and began experiencing this problem once I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. I have a MacBook Pro so I was quickly running out of room. I moved my library to an external drive that is attached to my Airport Base Station. But I'm having issues syncing and streaming. It begins to sync but goes on and on and doesn't stop. Even when I try to stream the content it constantly stops to load and repeats the process again and again. My external hard drive is a 1TB Western Digital USB 2.0.
I've read about a lot of syncing issues so far. If this continues I'm going to simply return it because it really doesn't do what it claims it should do very well.
Is this a software issue? Is it because I moved my iTunes library to an external drive? Even when I play videos on my computer it still has issues playing back.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • "Writing Video" is taking forever on an animated full screen background

29 minutes to get rid of the redline on a segment that includes an animated full screen background. I'm on FCP 6 with a 3.06ghz/4gb RAM/nvidia 8800.
I'm going to buy a new iMac for something else. Is this an argument to upgrade to the ATI card? Would it perform faster on this? What about the extra 4gb of RAM? Would that make a significant impact on this process?
    Your insights are greatly appreciated.

One way is to let FCP X do all the resolution and aspect ratio calculations.
When you create a new project, choose the "First Clip" setting and then drop one of your clips into the timeline. Sometimes people will use a graphic with a non-standard  aspect ratio as the first clip and inadvertently create a mismatch with their video.

  • Ever since I updated to the latest version of Premiere Pro my video is taking FOREVER (over 20 hours) to export.

the video is only 20 minutes long. I've exported longer videos in less than 2 hours before so I have no idea what the issue is. The first time I tried to export this same video it started at saying remaining time was around 8 hours, went all the way down and finally finished and then said it there was an error in the export after 8 hours and the exported video wasn't there. So I decided to try the exporting process again, and last night before bed it said about 8 hours to export again. I just woke up and now it's still not finished (over 8 hours later) and NOW the remaining time is over 20 hours!!!! Does anyone else have these issues?

  • Filevault taking forever to initialize--Normal?

Picked up my brand new MBP yesterday and went through all of the usual preference settings. Set up FIlevault and it started to run (blue screen with spinning icon).
It has been running like that overnight and was still spinning this morning. Is this normal? There is nothing on this computer yet except the OS. Can this be interrupted? Or do I just have to be patient.
Thanks. Very long time Mac user but this is my first new machine in 4 years. Old system is 10.4.11 so never used Filevault before.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I don't use FileVault much -- I've used it on a test account to experiment, but that's about it. But since nobody else has answered . . .
No, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes on a home folder with just the default contents. You probably can't interrupt whatever's going on, so will have to force your Mac off, and if it won't restart, you may end up having to reinstall OSX from the disc that came with it.
It would be a good idea to have an Admin account that's not protected by File Vault, so you can use it if there's a problem with the one that is.
Do you really need to run File Vault? For many, encrypting your entire home folder is vast overkill. If you only need to encrypt a few files, it may be much easier to create an encrypted disk image for them, and leave the rest alone.
File Vault also doesn't play too well with Time Machine. See #25 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions and tell us which of those windows you saw.
If you do want to use it, see the green box there to turn it on, and let us know how far it gets.

  • Loading is taking forever!!

Whenever I am trying to watch my friends videos on YouTube, or when I am trying to download anything at all, it seems to be taking forever. This is expecially true for anything on the internet. What could be the problem?? I cant watch a 2 minute without having to restart it every 5 seconds because its loading so slow!

  • *** Rendering is taking forever

I am editing a 720x480 DV anamorphic project on a DP 2.7 and the render times are taking forever for a render to rather simple video (i.e. not many layers). I'm getting an orange bar whenever I need to render. In the past it was green and went much faster.
I must have changed the preferences. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the orange bar and have the green bar mode available to render?
    Thanks in advance.

It wouldn't make any difference... if you set your playback to "safe" or Unlimted mode in the RT pop up menu in the Timeline window you can change the 'render status" colors, but the time it takes to actually render will be the same as long as the render quality settings are the same.
FWIW, some effects take longer to render than others for sure...

The material has to be converted to the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can probably do this using MPEG Streamclip.

  • Why is it taking forever to export a short video?

    hi everyone,
currently pulling my hair out trying to export a 13 minute video i recently made. By choosing the option youtube simply took 24 hours or more to reach 6% of completion. After watching a youtube tutorial on the compressor i spent £35 on buying it in order to compress my video once i had exported it. The tutorial advised me to bounce my project off as a master file to import into compressor and upload the compressed version on to youtube. The master file option is also taking forever to export from FCPX. Please can someone tell me what im doing wrong,
    Mitchell.

What are your system specs? Where do you store your projects and events (libraries, if you're on 10.1)?
What kind of media are you working with – the formats of both your video and audio clips? Does the project use a lot of photos?

  • Yikes, 5 minute video taking forever to load on drop-in

I have a 5 minute video shot in HD at 1920 x 1080.  I have compressed the video to only 27MB because I am really only using the video as a guide to the graphics so it doesn't matter if the video looks bad.  I will not be using the video part in the end, only the graphics I create around it.  Basically, I am using the video as a timeline both video palcement and audio placement.
I imported the video and dragged it down the the "new comp" button to make sure the sizing is set properly at 1920 x 1080.  Now it seems to be taking forever for the video to "load".  It's only moving in slow-mo and I still can't hear any audio.  I know I have to use the preview controls to hear audio but still nothing.  Sometimes i can hear audio but then no video, although neither is actually working.
Is my computer too weak to handle this file?
    I am running an HP, AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual core processor 6000 + 3.00GHz, 3.00GB, 32-bit OS.  Is that enough?
What is the best way to load  large video files so you can actually work with them (audio and video) without the stops and starts?
    Thank you!

Rudy: Without knowing the details, it's important to point out that some extremely compressed video formats are meant for distribution/playback, not to be used in production. They could be much harder to decode tan the original video file recorded by the camera (again, not knowing what kind of camera). In fact, the overall file size or data rate for a video file is not directly related to how heavy it is for an application to lift it, sort of speak. Simply try using the original. But it would be useful if you post what format the original is, and also the compressed file.

  • ADODE MEDIA ENCODER CS5 TAKING FOREVER????

    Hello
I have just noticed that AME is not encoding fast enough as it used to. I recently changed my set up to the following,
    C : Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (2.5" 7200rpm)
    D : Areca Raid Controller 1110 (3 x seagate momentus 7200rpm 2.5" Raid 0) Media Files
E/F :TB32 Raid Controller ( 2 x Seagate 3.5" 7200RPM hdd Raid 0 Partitioned) Stock footage, Media Cache and Exports
I converted my two bay workstation to  4 2.5" HDDs
The sequence I am currently exporting is 23 minutes long and is  Matrox HDV 50i, with Matrox colour correction, Magic Bullet Looks and  Adobe Auto contrast. This export is taking forever and it has just  rendered a sixth of the sequence for 2 hours 27 minutes and indicates  that 11 hours 23 minutes remains to render. CPU is not maxed out never  had such awful long renders before with my previous setting which had  only two logic HDDs.
This was my previous HDD set up
    C : Bios Raid 0 (Western Digital Caviar Green 3.5" 7200 x 2 partitioned into C & D)
E/F :TB32 Raid Controller ( 2 x Seagate 3.5" 7200RPM hdd Raid 0 Partitioned) Stock footage, Media Cache and Exports
So currently I am not sure whether I have gone for the  better or I have just worsened. I have just exported some clips with  after effects and the CPU was maxed out without any sluggish perfomance.

    HP XW6600 Win 7 Pro 64 bit

    32 GB RAM
    GTX 285 2GB GPU
    Matrox RT X2
    Areca 1110
I have got lots of jobs coming up and perfomance has become of paramount importance. I am considering RMA of the 2.5" HDDs here, don't know what to do really? Check out this picture which shows the perfomance I am suffering here.

    Ann Bens wrote:
You need to establish if this is AME or Matrox.
Place your project in a non Matrox project and render again.
Mind you Looks and auto contrast take a lot of rendering.
Best is to ditch the auto contrast and use the Brightness and Contrast.
Effects with auto tend to make a mess of you video.
What preset did you use i find your settings somewhat odd.
I copied all the footage in the matrox timeline and pasted it into HDV timeline. There was no change, the render speed is just the same. The first clip in this sequence is a quicktime mov file 1920 x 1080 (Opening sequence 30 sec long no effects), AME renders this one faster than real time and max out the CPU to over 95%, but when it hits the main content with the filters, the CPU usage drops tremendously. This happens on both matrox and HDV sequences, which leaves with no alternative but to think that the slowness render issue lies with the Red Giant plugins.

  • H.264 - Taking forever to encode?  What's wrong?

I have captured some video of my desktop using iShowU, which basically makes a Quicktime of everything that happens on your desktop including a mic input. I used the Apple Intermediate Codec to capture the material. The size of the vid is 1900 x 1250 (75% of the full size 30" display desktop).
I imported this recording direct into FCP and did some quick edits, now I'm trying to export them using compressor as quicktime files that will be distributed on a CD.
The export happens and the final quality is fine, but the export is taking FOREVER. I've done video editing before and this seems way too long to export. Here are the specs...
    - It is taking about 15 minutes to export 1 minute of video. This is way way way too long.
    - I'm running a new Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad Core, 5GB of Ram with high speed drives - this machine should scream through this encode job. Activity monitor is showing about 130% processor activity from Compressor, and another 90% or so from Final Cut Pro. I think it should peg the processors a bit higher than that.
Here are the exact settings I'm using in Compressor:
    Name: Test 1 QuickTime Movie
    Description: No description
    File Extension: mov
    Audio Encoder
    IMA 4:1, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 1900
    Height: 1250
    Pixel aspect ratio: square
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: (100% of source)
    Frame Controls:
    Retiming: Nearest Frame
    Resize Filter: Nearest Pixel
    Deinterlace Filter: Line Averaging
    Adaptive Details: Off
    Antialias: 0
    Detail Level: 0
    Field Output: Progressive
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 74
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 24
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
    Fast Start: on
    Brightness And Contrast
    Brightness: 6.600000
    Contrast: 11.600000
I am running that one Bright/Contrast filter, but that shouldn't take up that much extra power should it? Surely I have something wrong here. The export frame rate, size (pixel demensions) and everything else are exactly the same as the source material from what I can tell.
I'm going to have about 15 total hours of footage to export and from what I can tell using these settings - that's nearly 10 straight days of encoding, and that ain't gonna' work.
    Thanks!!!

H.264 is much slower codec than many other ones.
And, at those giant frame sizes, it wouldn't
surprise me to see such long encode times.
More than six hours ago, I took four short (six minutes or so each) Flash video files to Compressor 3 and sent this batch to transcode to H.264. The first clip went off merrily and the Activity Monitor showed 145% activity of the CPU. It was done in 13 minutes, the second ckip took 14 minutes and the remaining two clips are still there with very little progress in transcoding. The Activity Monitor shows from five to 10 per cent Compressor usage of the CPU.
This is definitely not due to "giant frame sizes". Somewhere along the way Compressor 3 slowed down dramatically.
