FCP Rendering seems to have slowed down !!

I have FCP at home which runs great, but i put a simple presenter to camera video piece into the timeline, keyed in motion as i always do, but the rendering has suddenly ground to a halt, suggested it would and does takes hours to render !! So i tried the same piece on an older Mac at work and it renders at the usual pace, which is acceptable.
Why is my rendering suddenly gone mad !! nothing has changed ??
Help it is driving me mad.
Paul

  • Finder/Graphics seem to have slowed down

I've been having a problem (or possibly two) lately: If I'm running several programs, or one very intensive program like Mathematica, my Dock suddenly takes a long time to appear when I mouse to the edge, and/or clicking on a Finder window does not bring the window to the front, although I can move it around behind the other windows.
I have 25 GB of disk space, but only 512 MB of RAM, and I can hear the drive going alot. But it seems to be slowing down graphics such as the Finder windows or browser loading drastically as well - I thought graphics were handled by a separate system?
Is there anything other than increasing RAM that would alleviate this issue? It didn't happen before.
Oh, and I've repaired permissions and such. Also, I just recently had to have the logic board replaced, because it stopped reading the computer's power supply status.
Thanks for any suggestions you could give.

    Hi Jim,
Maxing out the RAM will help quite a bit, when the OS needs more RAM it uses VM, or Disk Space, and Laptop drives aren't very fast either, so a faster bigger one would help, they sell 7200 RPM ones now with more cache also.
25 GB might sound like a lot of free space, but let's say it's a 100 GB drive, then whenever the OS needs to use some for Virtual Memory, it basically has a one in four chance of finding it right away, and that will most likely be very fragmented, so the HD must jump back & forth thousands of times to write one file.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files, but you should see some speed improvement!

  • Since loading Yosemite, My system seems to have slowed down abit and was hoping to find a way to get the speed up again.

I have an older IMAC 2007, and have just been able to load Yosemite on. When I click on anything, It now hesitates before going to the next page. Is it just the older system or is there a way to clean up the system to get it running faster. Thanks in advance

  • Netprotect Plus seems to really slow down my netbo...

I've been using Netprotect Plus on my desktop computer for years. recently I loaded it onto my Netbook and it seems to have slowed the whole thing down especially when loading webpages.  I want the protection - is there anything I can do to improve performance?

I keep getting the spinning wheel, and macbook pro seems to be slowing down.  How do i fix this without buying software?

Go to system profiler and report back the amount of RAM that you have.
Make sure that you have at least 20% of your hard drive free.
Make sure you don't have a lot of items on your desktop as that can slow things down.
Quit applications that aren't responding or you aren't using and won't be using for a while.
~/Library/Caches Quit all applications and delete this folder. Do a regular delete then do a secure erase on all the items that won't delete.
If it only happens with a certain application (Safari for example)...
    1. Quit the application (Safari)
    2. Open ~/Library/Preferences and find the file for safari (com.apple.Safari.plist).
    3. Put the file in the trash. Do NOT empty the trash yet. Open the application and make sure everything's ok. Now you can delete the file. In Mail if you trash the file, you will get rid or your setup.
Make sure that your dashboard doesn't have too many widgets and use Activity Monitor to see what it's using.
There are ways to disable if you want to.
Make sure that all of your software is up to date.
    Repair permissions (it can't hurt)
Don't have a lot of login items.
Your internet browser shouldn't have a lot of extensions.
    I hope this helps
    Chris

I'm having the same problem. Dreamweaver is supper slow. Uploading and downloads from the server... any server I use two different servers. It times out all the time. Menus are slow too.
I'm on a MAC Pro, 6 gigs of ram no issues with anything else. I have talked to Apple they have checked everything for me. They say it's Dreamweaver. I've noticed the Dreamweaver is talking to the FTP even when I'm not doing anything.
I've tried cleaning out my MAC caches, turning off file check and check out. Still really slow. I've worked with Dreamweaver for 6 years never any issues like this before. 18 seconds to upload a 4 kb file. 11 seconds to download the same file.

    Hi Annie,
Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • I have added (plug in's or add-on's) example, Weatherbug. I want to remove them. They seem to be slowing down my computer. How do I do this? do they slow down my computer? thanks, Gary W. Luster

I have Firefox add on's such as Weather-bug and Reminder. I want to know if these add on's can slow down my computer. They seem to be doing that. And, if I need to delete these add-on's from my computer. How would I go about doing that?
    Thank You,
    Gary W. Luster

Just to the right of your post, you should see an "Edit this post" link. Click that, and then next to the subject text just above the message text edit box, you should see an "edit" link. Use that to remove your email address.
To remove an add-on, go to the Add-ons menu item. In Firefox 4 that's on the FireFox menu (upper left corner of the window). In older versions it's on the Tools menu. Then you want to choose the Extensions tab, and find the add-on you want to remove. It should have a Remove button next to it.

  • All Firefox builds/versions have slowed down considerably

Recently, Firefox slowed down to a crawl while doing pretty much anything - loading pages, watching videos, loading images. Firefox isn't crashing or going gray, it's just running at a snail's pace. However, the connection speed of the internet at home isn't the issue, as my parents still can get on the Internet just fine, and using Firefox, too. I thought it was a problem with the F4 beta, so I downgraded to 3.6, but with no result. I've had to lifeboat out to Chrome - it still works fine, no slowdowns, and neither does IE. Downloads still seem to go at a respectable pace, so I'm just confused as to what the problem is. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it your computer or your Internet connection? Even if your connection is fast the speed of the Internet also depends upon every server computer between you and your web sites. Are you on an unsecured wireless connection and somebody else is using it? What about general things you do on your computer. Do you have any processor intensive activities you can use for comparison test purposes? This can go all kinds of directions so we need to try to narrow it down to your computer or your connection.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • Why might ACR have slowed down on CC?

I've always used ACR for initial image processing, but recently it's slowed down to the point where moving between images takes around 1-2 seconds. I've actually ended up pulling an old laptop out of a cupboard that's running vista and Bridge CS3!
So my question is, what can I try other than the below which haven't been much use:
    Clearing thumbnail/preview cache
    Changing cache directory
    re-install
    downgrade to CS3!
    Moving images onto SSD
    Editing direct from CF Card
The images themselves are from a Nikon D2Hs, just over 4 megapixel, and it doesn't seem to matter where on the computer they're stored.
    My main machine is:
Windows 7, Dual Xeon (8 core, 2.4GHz) , 64GB RAM, 160GB of space left on scratch/cache disk array - exibiting no other faults.
Let me know if there's anything I can post to show performance etc, and thanks in advance.

  • Things have slowed down

    Hi there,
Typing, opening programs, scrolling and some other primary functions have all slowed down considerably recently. It is really bad. As I type this even the spinning beachball comes up occassionally. I had 3 gigs available last night so I cleaned up the harddrive and now have 14 gigs. I thought that would help but it hasn't.
Thanks so much for any help.

_Ah this should be easy to fix. Follow these steps:_
    1) Open a Finder window. On the left, click "Macintosh HD" (or whatever your hard drive is named). To the right, go into the "Library" folder. Go into the "StartupItems" folder. Any folders in here are a program that loads when the computer starts up. You may delete any or all of these folders. An administrator password will be required. NOTE: So programs may require some of these items to run properly, so I recommend being selective when deleting items.
    2) Click the Apple (Top left). Click "System Preferences...". Click "Accounts". Click the "Login Items" tab. Any items in this list are programs that open when you log on to this specific account (the check-mark does not have anything to do if it runs or not). To remove an item from this list, select it and click the "-" button. NOTE: So programs may require some of these items to run properly, so I recommend being selective when removing items.
    3) Open a Finder window. On the left, click on the picture of a house with your username beside it. To the right, go into the "Library" folder. Locate the folder called "caches". Drag this entire folder to the trash and empty the trash. Some items may not empty from the trash, do not worry about this.
    4) Open a Finder window. On the left, click "Macintosh HD" (or whatever your hard drive is named). To the right, go into the "Library" folder. Locate the folder called "caches". Drag this entire folder to the trash (this will require an administrator password) and empty the trash. Some items may not empty from the trash, do not worry about this.
After following those steps, restart and you should find it a lot faster.

  • My macbook seems to be slowing down....any thoughts on how to speed it back up?

2 years old and slowing down.....

    Free:
    - Use disk utilities (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utilities) to repair the permissions.
    - Also, allowing your computer to shut down and start up again will help as Mac OS X runs various scripts to clean and do some light optimization stuff.
    Software wise:
    - Defragmentation programs will work also. Other (some free, some paid) programs are available that will perform various actions to speed up your computer.
    Hardware wise:
    - add RAM, max out.
    - Hard drive: upgrade to 7200 rpm or an SSD drive or Seagate's Momentus hybrid SSD/standard platter hard drive.
