FCP & Snow Leopard??

I had to reinstall my OS and can only get to 10.4.11 so I either need to buy the 10.5 install disc and do software updates
or buy snow leopard.  I looked at some of the reviews or SL and they weren't good, but none of them were from FCP users, so
I am wondering if any of you have an opinion on what I should do??
II am on a macbook pro and have FCP 7.0.3

Don't know what reviews you were looking at but Snowleopard is very good - upgrade! at least 4 gigs of ram is nice too, 6 is better. (I like crucial.com OWC, macsales.com is good too)

  • FCP Studio will not boot up after Snow leopard upgrade.

Everything was working fine on Leopard but decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Now the program stats up and we get to the splash screen then it quits. Anybody help me? so far Snow Leopard has been a complete waste of time, After effects on Mac will not work now either.

They all work except FCP 6 and After effects cs3. FCP is my main worry. I have a deadline to finish.

  • FCP 6 preferred compatibility, Lion or Snow Leopard

I'm planning on buying a new MacBook Pro and install FCP 6, but I hear all new Macs come with Lion operating system, and FCP 6 is best compatible with Snow Leopard. Can anyone enlighten me further on this?

You can only load FCP 6 onto Lion if you first install Rosetta from a Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow) DVD.
Other than that, FCP 6 works fine on Lion.

  • FCP Studio & Snow leopard

I have the original Final Cut Studio (Version 1.0.1) that I bought when I had a G5 powerpc iMac. I have since upgraded to an Intel iMac, and just installed Snow Leopard. Motion wouldn't launch at all, so I uninstalled the entire suite with FCS Remover. Now I can't install FCP Studio at all. It says "Your computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the Read Me for details."
Is this because the software is so old? Do I need to buy the new $300 FCP upgrade? Thanks in advance.

You need to buy the upgrade. That version of FCS was designed for the PowerPC processor machines. When Apple moved to Intel, the application was re-written to work with those processors. The older version won't work with the new processors.

  • Snow Leopard, FCP, AFX & Gamma

Hi all. First of all I'd like to say that I've already googled about this for hours and that I wouldn't post a question on the subject if wasn't on a tight deadline and had already pulled out whatever hair I had left.
We are finishing a project using FCP 7.0.1 running on Leopard on a 2 x 2.66 Dual Xeon.
At the last minute we decided to rent a second Mac Pro to help us with some After Effects rendering. The new Mac is a 2.66 Quad Xeon, newer model (no FW 400 connector). And of course it runs Snow Leopard.
After Effects CS3 has been causing us problems with gamma shifts when rendering on the same (Dual Xeon) machine that runs FCP, but we've sorted them out (activating the "Legacy" option in Project Settings dialog of AFX, a tip from Creative Cow). However, on the new machine the nightmare has begun again, only this time I can't find any solution to the gamma shift.
Footage exported from Leopard FCP (both from the timeline and from the original .mov file using Quicktime Player), after the round trip to the After Effects installation on Snow Leopard (without any effects added), is always darker, whether using ProRes or DVCPRO HD 1080i50 (which is our timeline's codec).
I know Adobe doesn't offer support for CS3 on SL. I also know that the switch from 1.8 to 2.2 might be involved, but I can't figure out how (Apple says the ColorSync utility should make this an invisible, but I've also tried changing to 1.8. in the Display Settings - however this is for display only and obviously doesn't affect the pixel processing in After Effects).
I would like to know if there is ANY solution available or whether we should return the SL machine, install Leopard on it, or buy CS4 (which seems to have its own issues in this area). Needless to say, all the above options except the first one would be a major pain (we're editing nights here...)
    Thanks for any help.

I don't know if this is the solution, but it is a solution and I'm jotting this down in case someone bumps into this post while searching.
Do a search for "Adjusting Gamma" in the FCP 7 documentation. Read the whole page.
The workflow using the Animation codec works for me :
    1. Export your footage (either from FCP or directly from QT) as DVCPRPO HD 1080i50 (or whatever your native footage is).
    2. In Snow Leopard, process the clip in After Effects and make sure you use the Animation codec in the Output Settings (and Upper Field first in the Render Settings). Don't use a color corrected workflow (use "Preserve RGB" everywhere).
    3. Still in Snow Leopard, add the clip to a FCP project, right-click on it and export a DVCPRO HD 1080i50 sequence (not using quicktime conversion). You don't need to create a sequence to do this and you don't even have to modify the Gamma value in the clip's properties (although you now can do it, since Animation is an RGB codec).
    4. Import the clip back in FCP on Leopard.
You can easily setup a batch process for all this.
Disadvantage: on your SL AFX machine you can't have a precise idea of how the result would look, color-wise, in FCP. I can live with that because I'm only using it for calculations.
But I would be interested in any alternative solution.

  • Can't import audio files in FCP after snow leopard update

i've recently updated to snow leopard. and i'm running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
i opened a .fcp project i created a long time ago. i tried to import a .aif file and final cut crashes. i converted the .aif file to a .mp3 file. tried to import it, and final cut crashed.
i then went and deleted the preference files for final cut pro, reopened final cut, tried importing both files again, it still crashes.
does anyone have a legitimate answer for why this is happening?

    BenB wrote:
1st, FCP does not officially support MP3 audio files, so don't even use them. I'm running FCP 7 on Snow Leopard, no problems with audio files.
1- How are you encoding them? What software is creating these files?
2- Are you running on an external FW800 drive?
3- How much RAM are you running?
And as my final observation is, NEVER run Final Cut Pro 6 on Snow Leopard! Huge no-no! If you upgrade to Snow Leopard, only use FCS3. I've updated lots of systems for my students and clients, and I've seen lots of FCP6 on SL problems.

I agree that you shouldn't use MP3 files with FCP, the manual tells you that somewhere If I recall properly, but it shouldn't cause Final Cut to crash, at least that has never been my experience, it has just caused a skipping problem, or not playing the complete song.
I don't really understand wht a FW800 drive or the amount of RAM have to do with it, it would sure be interesting to hear your comments on that.
However, in all due respect, to make the statement that one should NEVER run Final Cut Pro 6 on Snow Leopard seems pretty "out there" would you be so kind as to provide your rationale for such a drastic statement as that. Has there been anything official from Apple along those lines?

  • Problems with FCP after Snow Leopard Installation

I'm editing canon 5d footage in FCP. I use MPEG Streamclip to properly convert the footage before importing to fcp. Everything was working absolutely fine until I installed snow leopard.  Now, all of the clips in the timeline have those weird lines as if I imported the footage without converting it.  I have a deadline and if I have to re-edit this entire project it's not going to be pretty.  I have installed all of the updates for FCP and Snow Leopard.  I tried a test by creating a new batch in MPEG streamclip and the footage is fine. It appears that I might have to re-edit everything.   Can someone PLEASE offer some assistance?  I can't afford to re-edit this project.
    Thank you

Yes... I am aware of the canon plug in for converting 5d/7d footage.  I either use that plug in or MPEG stream clip and they both have been working fine.   "Properly" meaning... FCP does not recognize H.264 (5d and 7d) therefor we need to convert the video using either MPEG stream clip or the free canon plug in.  The best codec to edit this footage is ProRes 422LT  ProRes422 - I only use the 5d and or 7d cameras for my projects and have been editing this way for some time without any problems what so ever.  The problems immediately arose after upgrading to Snow Leopard. The problem lies in my EXISTING FCP projects that are already in the works.  I am still able to convert footage for new projects without a problem.  I am using the latest updated versions of SL and FCP. I did the following to trouble shoot:
    1. Did a clean reinstall of FCP - STILL HAPPENING
    2. On an existing project I deleted a few of the problem clips.  Took the original and converted it again using MPEG Stream clip.  Renamed it and from the FCP project, I located the new clip.  SAME PROBLEM
    3. On an existing project, I deleted a few of the clips completely. Converted the original again using MPEG SC.  Imported the entire new clip in FCP, re-edited it and dragged it into the time line.  NO PROBLEM WORKS FINE
    4. Opened a new project in FCP.   Took some of the original problematic clips.  Converted them using MPEG SC. Dragged into the timeline.  NO PROBLEM, WORKS FINE
    5. Played both the original clips (before conversion) and the converted clips in Quick Time - NO PROBLEM WORKS FINE
    6.  Exported part of a problematic project to Quick Time - NO PROBLEM WORKS FINE
    7. Opened up one of the same projects from the same hard drive on my other mac (Mac Book Pro) and there are NO PROBLEMS.  THEY WORK FINE
Based on everything I've listed above, the problem seems to be happening in the Viewer  and Canvas on my I-Mac which I just upgraded to Snow Leopard.  The exported projects are fine.  Am I to assume that I should continue working with these existing projects and everything will be fine?  I've spoke to 5 or 6 friends that are experienced and no one can come up with an answer.

  • FCP will not open after upgrade to snow leopard

I ran MacKeeper on my MacPro, then my FCP would not open. Upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard, FCP still will not open.
By the way, I uninstalled MacKeeper, I think.  Need some help PLEASE!!!!!

It sounds like MacKeeper (it's junk! stay away!) did a number on your computer. Doing a major upgrade to a Mac when it already has problems will just exacerbate those problems.
Had you been using Time Machine? How long ago did you install MacKeeper?

  • FCP 6.0.6 Won't Open with Snow Leopard!

I updated to FCP to 6.0.6 and the program now refuses to open. I've tried deleting preferences and removing Qmaster (which worked, but I reinstalled it after I upgraded to Snow Leopard thinking the OS 10.6 would solve the problem). Any other suggestions? I'm trying to avoid the reinstall, but this 6.0.6 update has been nothing but trouble!

That fortunately or unfortunately is really the best way to go. The pro apps are a LOT more demanding than the little stuff that comes bundled with the OS. There's an excellent post by Jerry Hofmann from not too long ago that details the process. Use the search window upper right and you'll find it pretty quickly.
When you're done, your machine will feel like it's brand new and really zippy. you'll love it. Don't forget to archive off to another drive all the stuff you want to keep and BE SURE you've got all your various install discs and passwords handy. It'll take a while. Patience and plenty of coffee.

  • Snow Leopard makes FCP 6.0.6 wipes black out main video

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard I have found FCP 6.0.6 will not show the viewer window output properly on my 2nd screen via the View > VideoPlayback option, it just shows the first frame, if I scrub the viewer window it updates but not when I play it. But the canvas window does play back correctly in the 2nd screen.
Also getting very odd side effects if I use wipes like the QuickTime > Gradient Wipe on a 2nd video over the main video blacking out the canvas window while the wipe animates and then once complete the underlying video returns. Even when I render it out to a seperate QuickTime file it does this.
    Anyone else experienced this?

It was just an upgrade from the standard DVD of Snow Leopard.
What I have also noticed is that both the new designed QuickTime interface and the old QuickTime 7 app are co-existing. I'm wondering whether that is part of the problem?

I take it that you cloned your boot drive, and then did a clean install of SL, and then FCS2 with updates?
No migration assistant, time machine or upgrade install?
And that you trash your FCP preferences files after the upgrade?

  • 'Open Recent' Not Working In FCP 6 Since Updating To Snow Leopard

Yes, I new I shouldn't of updated to Snow Leopard until they ironed out some wrinkles first, oh well.....
Anyway, I have noticed since updating the 'Open Recent' doesn't seem to work In my FCP 6, I remember Logic Pro doing the same thing a few years back and the word was to bin some kind of preference file?
    Any ideas, Cheers

Instructions for Final Cut Pro 6. This might have changed in FCP 7.
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • FCP X is just as tetchy with Snow Leopard as it is with Lion

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard on one of my internal drives.
Now I have the choice of Lion or Snow Leopard to run FCP X (installed it on both).
So far, I can see no improvement at all with FCP X on SL.
Can anybody suggest an operation that runs better with Snow Leopard?
    Andy

For some reason FCPX runs much better with Snow than Lion on my old Mac Pro. If I understand your question right, rendering is faster, it opens faster, there is no stuttering and I always use playback: High Quality, it never crashes.  And I have no memory leak, on the contrary FCPX only uses 4-5 GB. I have another volume with Lion and FCPX and an can clearly see the difference when I switch. But I have no clue what is going on. Maybe my computer likes Snow better.

  • FCP 7 & Snow Leopard Test Render

Ok, I have a Mac Pro Quad Xeon. I did a test render of a sequence before the Upgrade to Snow Leopard which took 24 minutes. (I applied a 3d filter.)
Installed Snow Leopard. Booted the Mac Pro with the "6 + 4" option. Activity Monitor shows many processes as "Intel (64 bit)", but not FCP. "Kernel_task", for example, does show "Intel (64 bit)."
Opened the same project in FCP and applied the same filter and rendered.....
    14 minutes.

  • FCP in Snow Leopard?

I want to get Snow Leopard next month, but I want to make sure I'll be OK. I use FC Studio 2 on an intel iMac. Any word if I'd need to upgrade FC, cause I don't want to do that. We use this version at work and we can't upgrade there due to the lack of Intels.

When Snow Leopard is released, and people install it, and install FCP...we'll let you know. So far no one other than Apple and Developers have it. And they have to be mum.
