FCP taking 40-50 minutes to open a project(!!!!!!!)

My project file is not that big (8.8MB) but am finding that FCP is taking upwards of 50 minutes to open it sometimes. It's not happening every time, and sometimes it's opening the same project in less than 60 seconds. I haven't been able to determine any pattern but it seems to be the first time that a project is opened after a full system restart, which seems counter-intuitive. At this point I'm not sure if it's a drive issue (brand new G-Tech GRAID 2TB @ 7200 RPM connected via FW800), a FCP issue, a RAM issue, a faulty FW800 connection on the system or the drive, or something else.
Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

It doesn't sound like you have an issue with the drive or the project. That would affect every time you launch it. It sounds more like a problem launching FCP. You might have, either a corrupt preference, or a conflicting plug-in. Once the conflict is resolved, FCP will successfully launch until the computer is turned off, and then it will show up again. That's why it only hangs on the first FCP launch, I bet.
Do you have any third-party plug-ins? Any chance you installed the 3ivx codec from a Flip camera? Or do you have Divx player installed, either as a browser plug-in, or an app?

  • Photoshop is taking almost 3 minutes to open. Why?

Photoshop CS4 Extended is taking almost 3 minutes to open. It takes so long that when I click edit image in PS while in LR I get an error message that says cannot open in PS as it is not open. I do have snow leopard but have not had any issues. I have reloaded CS4 performed the updates but this did not help.

On my Mac Pro OS 10.6.1 with LR launched and a catalogue opened it was really slow to open it took 9 seconds it usually takes 8 seconds.
Os 10.6.x has lot's of problem but slowness is not usually one of them though certain things take a second or two longer.
However since users on OS 10.6.1 experience varying difficulties that seem to specific to certain users I can see where this might be an Apple software problem.
It is also IMHO that it might be time for Adobe to consider creating its own OS so that they can maintain the functionality of their products as they develop them and coordinate the progress of the OS's development with the upgrade program of their applications. It only seems reasonable that they be in a position to be able  to assure their customers a working platform for their products regardless of the shortcomings of the computer manufactureers and OS developers.
Who says there can only be two operating systems, I would like to see a system that would load with an intel processor and a sun microsystem and maybe even on a hand held device.
Considering the Problems that Apple and Microsoft have burdened their customers with over the past two decades.I think the graphic arts community would support it.
Of course they would have to allow other software companies to develop applications as well.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

  • FCP Crashes when I try to open a project - just one project.

I even tried going to the Autosave Vault to open the latest saved file.
"Finder>Documents>Final Cut Pro Documents>Autosave Vault>Look for the folder with the project's name you are trying to open." Someone else had a similar issue and had success with that, but not me.
When I open the file it launches the latest FCP, but when it gets to 19% loaded FCP crashes and wants to report the error to Apple.
This file represents about one weeks worth of work, and FCP suddenly won't open this project anymore for some reason.
I made consistent backups, and even the backups won't work now.
How do people editing with FCP for a living survive if FCP does this??? This is unbelievable. If anyone can offer any ideas I would appreciate it.

Here's the first part of the crash log... (Let me know if the rest will help.)

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 has been crashing within 10 minutes of opening a project. Usually when scrolling, but not always. What can I do?

Sometimes it does it without scrolling, just on it's own.
PC. HP Z800 16 GB Ram Dual quad core Xeon  NVidia Quadro 3800 card.
I started this project last week and went an entire day without a crash.  Since then the only major change to the computer was installing Quick Books 2015.
Sometimes when I reopen PPRo after the crash, I get an error message that says Mercury GPU hardware not found, opening in software only mode, but that is maybe one time out of five.
    Any thoughts?

You may want to update your GPU drivers.
Quick Books is less suspect, but you might try uninstalling it temporarily if updating GPU drivers does not help.

  • Applications take 1-2 minutes to open at startup.

    Hello,
I've had a problem for a while with my iMac taking 1-2 minutes to open applications after startup.
I then cleared up a lot of hard drive space & installed Leopard--and that seemed to do the trick.
But the problem has come back. Any application takes at least one minute to open properly after the computer is started up (Mail, Safari, iTunes etc)
I am running Leopard 10.5.8 with 2GHz INtel Core Duo & 2 GB 667 MHz Memory.
With 45 GBs of free hard drive space.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Marc

If you like, you could send me a project file that won't open.  I'll check it on my system and we can eliminate the possibility that the project files have been corrupted.  Me email is in my profile.  Be sure and compress project file before attaching to email (control click on file and choose "compress."  this will create a zipped version of the file that's suitable for attachment.).

  • Urgent: i cant open my project!

i re-installed Leopard then installed FCP, and when i wanted to open my project which i have on an external drive, i get this message: "File's format is too new for this version of the application"
and i cant open the project...
i need help! a month of work is in the project!!

thanx man.. the problem is gone. i had some issues updating it though. the problem was that i like to put all the FCP studio apps in one folder inside the application folder, so it seems that the software update manager couldn't detect FCP. i had to get them out of the folder back into the application folder. it took my time to figure it out, but the problem is solved.
    thanx!

  • How to reduce the open time of Ms proejct 2010 plans which are taking 6 minutes to open.

In our company there is many plans which are uploaded in Project server 2010.
all linking to each other and in master plan all also link with master project.
when we open any project plan in Ms Project 2010 then it is taking 5 to 7 minutes time.
I dont know why . it's too much time.

Is this issue specific to one master project? Do you have MS recommended db maintenance plan in place. Try updating database statics  by executing  SP_updatestats on all 4 project databases

  • Taking 2 Minutes To Open Finder

My iMac all of a sudden is taking 2-3 minutes to respond to my mouse clicks, I have restarted and tried everything, if I click Macintosh HD it takes 2 minutes for that too open, if I try to open any folder the same thing, if I open up an application again the same thing, the colour wheel spins for two minutes before there is a response... I looked at the iMac disk space and there is only 99GB left out of 1000GB, could this be why?

    Hello Tom,
" could this be why? "
    Yes!
That drive needs a clear out asap. Its generally accepted that OS X needs around 10 - 15% free space on a drive to run correctly / safely.
    Regards.
    Ian.

  • FCP taking upwards of 45 minutes to launch

This is the second instance of this problem in the past 6 months. The last time, I was able to pinpoint the problem as being related to having an iTunes library on on the same drive as my FCP Scratch Disk. Once I moved that iTunes library to seperate drive the issue went away. (Sorta makes sense: having to go through massive amounts of directories would seem to slow things down.)
For some reason this problem has crept back up now, despite the fact that the iTunes library is on another drive (and that drive isn't even connected now).
To briefly describe the problem, whenever I launch FCP (either clean, from the application icon, or via any existing project) it seems to hang on the splash screen. A check of the Force Quite window shows that it's "not responding" and a force quite will easily shut it down. I've trashed preferences and tried to relaunch, but all this seems to accomplish is forcing me to then pick the primary easy set-up and scratch disk.
After sifting through a few other user posts, I've tried to just let it take it's time and see how long it takes to launch. The farthest I've gotten so far is that it has past the Splash Screen and begun it's launch/opening of project but is only partially drawing the Viewer and Browser windows. Meanwhile, the Force Quit window shows the typical "not responding" status, even though the FCP Progress bar says that it has loaded 4% of the project. (In the past, it has hung on the 4% status for upwards of 40-45 minutes before miraculously speeding through the remaining 96% and finally opening the project.)
Anyone have any similar issues or solutions?

I've repaired disk permission on my external FW drive and problem still persists. I'll have to do the boot disk after work. All my drives are about 6 months old.
As to the console. Yes it shows some oddities, though I'm not entirely sure how to fix the issue.
