  • Using .AVI files in FCP

Hi (this is my first posting),
I have hard drives (XP) full of AVI files that I must use in FCP. When I import them Final Cut says that these files "are not optimized for FCP" and should be recaptured or to use Media Manager to copy.
I'm new to FCP so when I copied in Media Manager - I don't know what happened. I was assuming I'd get a .MOV somewhere?
Do I need to get the original tape and re-capture on my Mac? The video doesn't look degraded and I produced a video ignoring this message with no problems. Now we're going to move to HD.
Is there a way to recapture an AVI from a hard drive, do I need to? What am I doing wrong (besides capturing to .AVI on XP system). Help .....
Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Final Cut Studio

I'm having the same problem, with hours and hours of AVI files that I want to sort through and can't recapture. I am trying to use Media Manager -- I choose recompress, and pick my destination, but it only creates more AVI files, not MOV files, and I can't figure out why?
When I try to import these new AVI files into my project, I get the same optimization warning... what am I doing wrong? (using FCP 5.1.4)

  • Import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X?

Hello, I need to import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X. It seems iMOVIE has no problem accepting AVI's, but FCP X says they are not "importable" (as I believe AVI is not a supported format in FCP X).
Can someone please recommend the best way for me to import 32GB of AVI into FCP X? With brief research, I believe Mpeg Stream Clip (?) would be an option, but I want something efficient and will be able mass convert if necessary (don't want to convert each individual clip).
Also what would be the best filetype to convert the AVI's into?
Any prompt insight would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.
    GSI

Well, I've got time if thats what it takes.
My goal is to convert the 32gb of "AVI files" into something compatible in FCP X without reducing the video quality. I don't know a specific file type, I just imported them from MINI DV into Sony Vegas (and then just dragged the files from Vegas onto an external and now just want them to get into FCP X)
I just downloaded Stream Clip, added 100 clips (4gb) of avi clips to batch list, but am having trouble converting. I tried converting to DV or Quicktime and the response is "Error: Can't create the MOV file"

  • Converting uncompressed AVI files for FCP?

I recently had 30 reels of old 8mm film footage from the 50's and 60's converted to digital and I now have a hard drive with all of the footage converted to uncompressed AVI files.  These are extremley large files as one 2 minute and 38 second clip is 4.45 gigs.
I want to bring them into Final Cut Pro to edit them but retain as much quality and picture as I can.  I am going to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert the AVI files to quicktime Mov. files but what compression setting and frame size should I use when converting them to Mov. files for best results?  As far as frame size, should I use 648 X 486 4:3 aspect ratio or 720 X 486 unscaled?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Given the material, standard ProRes or even ProRes LT (if you have FCP v7) is fine.
ProRes HQ is intended for 35mm film out and/or 2k video. It is a waste of file space and processing overhead for your purposes.

  • AVI files in FCP 4.5

    hi,
I have a lot of footage in AVI format, however when I import it into final cut the slug shows a blank screen and silence, but that the correct duration for the clip. The file plays fine in quick time.
Any sort of help would be great because this stuff needs to be done soon!
    Thanks
    Terry

    Terry,
I have found that if you import your avi files into Imovie and render them as full quality DV, the file will open just fine in final cut.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks,
    Morgan

  • Using AVI files in FCP and the 3ivx codec

    Hello there,
My video camera only films in .AVI files which the Mac cannot 'see' although the audio is fine. From my research it seems like the only codec available to allow you to 'see' the video on .AVI is the 3ivx codec which I downloaded before and which worked fine but then the trial ran out and left nasty watermarks all over my files which were a pain to get rid of. Is buying the codec the only thing to do? Has anyone bought the codec, so I know it's a safe website?
What I had been doing to avoid the codec was using iSquint to convert to mp4 and then using that file in editing software, then converting that to a youtube friendly file and then on to youtube itself, meaning that all the compression left the youtube video very very blurry.
Is the codec my only option?
Thanks for your help on this, it's driving me mental.

What camera only shoots 3ivx, Jenni?
And have you tried Perian yet? It will allow Quicktime to read 3ivx along with many other otherwise unsupported codecs. Suck it and see ... some users have issues with Perian installed, others get along with it just fine.
Converting to mp4 for editing is not recommended, nor is editing in 3ivx or any AVI wrapped codec for that matter. Convert it instead to a proper intraframe editing codec (such as good old fashioned DV) ... you can use the free MPEG Streamclip for this

  • How to store .avi files on a DVD

I have FCP 3 and a Mac G4. I edit short video clips for a "webumentary" www.cavebiota.com and send the files to a webmaster in another state. The webmaster prefers .avi files which I can supply on a CD if the clip is less than 650MB. Some clips, though, are bigger than the capacity of a CD and I would like to store them on a DVD. The problem is that the DVD program on my computer won't accept .avi.
I don't want it to end up as a DVD movie, just for storage like a CD-ROM
    disc.
There's a technique known as DVD-RAM that is used to store 9.4 GB on
    special DVD-RAM disks
But I'm fairly sure there's a simple way to do it on regular DVDs.

Unless I'm missing the point here, you don't need any additional software to burn a data dvd.
Insert blank DVD. If any dvd burning software opens, close it.
    Drag file to DVD icon.
    File>burn disc.
Treat it just like a humongo cd.
    Gobble gobble.

  • How can I edit .avi files in FCPX?

What's the best way to convert .avi files so they can be edited in FCPX and then "shared" with iPad and Apple TV2? Definition of best meaning least amount of time and effort without noticeable degradation of quality. I'm an advanced amateur photographer with increasing interest in video but limited knowledge of the technical aspects.
Now shooting HD with a DSLR camera but have over 100 hours of home/family video taken with Canon GL1 (mini-DV tape) then captured using Sony Vegas Pro. Captured files are .avi, NTSC, 29.97, 720x480, interlaced, 15 minutes or less duration.
Re-capturing original DV tapes to FCPX would be very time consuming. Don't know why but Vegas Pro 8 running on my older PC (Windows XP) refuses to render out to any of the QuickTime presets including uncompressed. Have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5, FCPX and Compressor running on new iMac.
My "trial and error" approach isn't working. Main problem seems to be with de-interlacing. Have converted .avi files to ProRes 422 using both Adobe Media Encoder and Apple Compressor. Interlacing "jaggies" are apparent with both when edited in FCPX. Jaggies can be eliminated using combinations of "progressive" field order and "blend frame" output option but this results in artifacts and/or noticeably soft image. Best results so far are by converting .avi to ProRes 422 using Adobe preset (lower field first) then using Apple Compressor's "Apple Device: SD for iPad …" output preset to convert the ProRes 422 to .m2v. Still seems a little fuzzy on iPad but maybe my eyes are just wearing out from all the hours I've spent on this problem.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help you can pass along. The more I work with FCPX, the better I llike it.

MPEG-4 isn't nearly enough information. There are many other factors that determine whether it will work in FCP. Many MPEG-4 files can be imported and optimized directly into the application.

  • I have AVI files that I need to be MOV files so that I can edit them in Final Cut Pro. I am going to use Quick Time Pro for this....do I have to 'export' it or can I just 'save as', or is there even a difference? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have AVI files that I need to convert to MOV files so that I can edit them in Final Cut Pro. I am going to use Quick Time Pro for this....When I have the files open in QT Pro do I have to 'export' it or can I just 'save as', or is there even a difference? Thanks in advance for your help!

I strongly recommend you use compressor to do the conversion (if it will open the files - since quicktime will open them, it will more than likely do it.
Compressor allows you to customize presets and save them and apply them to multiple files.  Although the interface may seem daunting, it's actually pretty simple.
Even if you can edit the avi in fcp, it's not a good idea.  Liable to cause problems down the road.

  • How to fix dropouts in imported AVI files?

I am having audio problems on imported AVIs. Using FCP4, i have imported some 45 min AVI files and rendered them on the FCP timeline.  ON a timeline of 7 subclips, the first 4 clips play and the remaining 3 clips are silent, even though all display waveforms.
And there's another problem. Of the first few clips that DO play, there is a choppy dropout happening, like the audio drops one frame every half a second. It's a continuous rough and choppy playback effect on the audio. The video portion of the files is fine.
    thx
    John

Try converting the AVI files to a QuickTime codec that matches your FCP Sequence settings prior to import.  AVI is a wrapper or container the hold A/V content that could have been made from any number of codecs, not all of which work with FCP very well.  Chances are that the files you imported are one of those.
Also make sure that the files you import are not on the boot drive (desktop, user's home folder, etc) and that all hard drives have at least 15% of free space available.

  • AVI files?

    Hello!
I was wondering if one of you can give this novice some advice about Final Cut Pro.
I am taking on a project of editing a show that I did and had video taped. The videographer is on a PC and has the files in AVI format. (He was going to put them onto my 320 gig external, since my tired {Powerbook had only a 6 gig HD! Sad.)
Anyway, will AVI files work with FCP? Also I am using the 4.0. version.
Thanks! Please email me at [email protected]

The best way to insure their working would be to use this trick upon importing them:
    http://web.mac.com/steelepro/iWeb/steelecuts.com/fcs%20detective/6FD1D5FD-0C56-4 F06-992C-902D00556549.html
However, you shouldn't be editing with a PC-formatted drive. Your easiest option (that let's you go back and forth between your Mac and your friend's PC) would be something like this: http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
On two other notes, you should never have your intenal HD that low on space. It can really clog things up. And, you should ALWAYS be using an external drive for media on FCP. Final Cut and Finder don't mix well when you use your internal drive for media.

  • AVI files are color reversed

Hi. I've been given a disk with a few AVI files in them. They came from a high-speed panasonic video camera. When I open them in FCP or QT, the colors are all messed up. The basic picture is there but instead of what it should be, everything is brilliant yellows and pinks.
Could this be a CODEC issue? Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
    FCP 6.0.6

This sounds like a color space transformation issue: the conversion from the internal working color space of the Panasonic WRAW to the output color space (RGB) is not happening.
You'll need to find an application that can open the files in their native color space and the convert them for you. It's not uncommon for specialized software to be needed to open raw files. And, there are numerous "raw" formats, new ones keep getting introduced and some get abandoned.
The support pages for the camera that shot the clips are probably the best place to check. That, or a user forum for those who have shot or shoot with this camera.

  • Out of memory error to view AVI files

    Hi everyone,
I've imported 6 AVI files from the same source into the browser. All work fine except for 2 of them. When I click on those files in the browser to preview them in the viewer, I receive 2 messages: the first one is 'general error', the second 'out of memory'. What strikes me is that in the browser, the duration marks 0 although the files are respectively 4MB and 1,6MB. I've compared them to the 4 others and they are similar. Any idea would be welcome. Many thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum!
AVI files don't work with FCP. FCP is based in Quicktime. You will need to convert all you AVI files to an quicktime editing codec like ProRes or DV-NTSC You can find a list of editing codecs in FCP's Easy Setup. You can use Compressor to convert the files.

  • Final cut 604 won't let me import dv avi files

i just get file error, denied 0 recognized, unknown messages when
i try to bring them in.
these are straight dv avi files. qtplayer opens and plays them fine.
i tried changing permissions so everybody can access them. no luck.
the project is a dv project so there shouldn't be anything wrong
    there. what have i overlooked?
i can also batch convert them using mpeg streamclip to qt dv files
    and they work fine.
shouldn't avi files import into fcp without issue as long as they're
    standard dv within the container?
i emailed a couple of the short ones to a friend who's on fcp 5 and
osx 10.4.11. i'm on fcp 6.0.4 and 10.5.x. he was able to load them into
    fcp without issue.
    thanks,
    BabaG

You can use [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com] to batch process the files.
As Jerry suggested, export them to QuickTime and choose the DV codec at 100% quality.

  • How Direct Import .AVI file in to Final Cut Pro 6

How can i Direct import .AVI Files in to Final Cut Pro 6..
Please Tell me Any kind of plugin or application or codec.....
    thankyou very much

The AVI file extension merely indicates that the video contained inside could be from any number of codecs; like a QuickTime .mov, .avi is just a wrapper. Saying you have an AVI file is much like saying you have a car ... it doesn't really tell us anything specific. You need to find out what codec it actually is, then you'll know whether or not it can be imported into FCP without conversion.
But you'd be better off converting it to a QuickTime codec that FCP works with natively prior to importing.
