FCP to AVID

I know theres software i can purchase which supposably will transfer an fcp timeline to avid, but i just dont want to deal with xml mle confusion, its just not worth it.
Basically i have to export a video for an avid system to add graphics, and then bring it back into my system.
Footage within video:
- 720x480 Interger (little endian) timecode, Apple ProIO vout 2vuy imdc [im not quite sure what all that is]
- 720x480 Uncompressed-10bit
- 1080i HDV
I usually export in Uncomp-10bit, quality seems to be the best, despite the size.
My question is what format (FCP to AVID)do i export my video at, while preserving as much quality as possible. And reverse.
I hear that its much easier the other way around, fcp allowing any format on their timeline, but whats the best format to export (AVID to FCP) preserving as much quality as possible.

Ah...young editors. I was there once. Learn the basics...how to do EDLs, even though they are old...they are still used. Learn about the offline/online process...even though it is old, it is still used. Know what it means to have bars and tone and show start at 1:00:00:00, and the difference between drop and non-drop frame timecode. Video levels a must.
ANYWAY...by lossless I mean virtually no loss in quality. That is what you are striving for.
FOX news still on Avids? Well, that's the news biz.

  • FCP and Avid

Does anyone know if you can use both FCP and Avid in the same MacBook Pro?
Right now I have FCP in my MacBook, and I'd like to ad Avid Media Composer to the same
MBP, but don't know if I'll encounter compatibility issues, or if both in the same system will
    screw up something.
I'm not planning on using both programs at the same time.
I'll have one program closed while I use the other.
    thanks!

I run both on my Powerbook G4. Just gotta make sure that the OS version and QT version is supported by both platforms.
I have OS 10.4.11 and QT 7.4.1. Running FCP 6.0.2 and Avid Media Composer 2.8.3.

  • Digibeta to minidv: FCP to Avid

    Hello,
    Here's my situation.
I work in a television facility which is largely based on Avid. However, I'd prefer to cut on FCP, which is on my home computer. This will save me both time and money. The main problem is that I get most of my source material on digibeta and don't have a digibeta deck at home. I'm figuring the best way to do this is have minidv dubs made from the digimasters for loading at home. I'll still have to online and output the footage in an Avid though.
    I have a few questions....
Will the timecode be preserved on my minidv dubs? This will be crucial of hi-rezing.
If so, What is the best way to get my sequence back into Avid?
Given my situation, is there a better way to do this?
Doable, or not worth the hassle?
    Thanks!

    Hi Greg,
    in answer to your questions.
Yes the timecode will be preserved as long as the dubs are correctly made by your vt area (ext t/code. proper ref ) AND you digitise them into your setup with a vt capable of replaying that timecode.(I use a sony DSR1800)
Once you've done your offline in FCP export an edl and conform in Avid from the DIgibetas, all should be fine in theory. (you may want to look at automatic duck for your FCP to AVID path though as this will take your sequence across)
Alternatively, get hold of a Kona card and digitise straight off the digibetas, cross converting to dv resolution, into FCP and follow the first path back to the AVID, this will save you having to make dv dubs.
    hope this helps

  • Export settings for sequence from FCP to Avid PC

    Hi,
Please can someone give me the best export settings/codecs to use if I need to export a FCP sequence with clips shot on XDCam EX1, 1920x1080i, 35 mbs at the least quality loss possible so that it can be imported into an Avid on PC for titling, effects and other bits added? My on-line editor is on Avid PC.
    Many thanks
    Belinda

    Hee....missed that final sentence somehow.
So...offlining imported footage on FCP that you will online in Avid? What is there to online? You imported at full resolution. Must be color correction.
OK then...you edit in FCP from imported XDCAM EX footage...and you intend to go to Avid for the final color correct and titling. Did you plan for this? Test this? because I am pretty sure that the QT files that were created when you imported with the transfer tool won't work on a PC. Unless you tested and they did. But it appears that they don't as you are asking how to get them there.
Did you not ask this question when you started this show? That is ALWAYS something you do. If you plan on doing a certain workflow, you have to make sure that the workflow in question will work. Offline and online from tape is fairly simple, as you can recapture from the tape...timecode being the big thing there. But this is IMPORTED footage. Full clips, and I don't see how you can import only what is used in a sequence.
This issue, coupled with FCP to Avid...and Avid on a PC no less. Well. Find a codec you can export from FCP that the Avid can read (this will require testing), then MEDIA MANAGE the footage to that codec. Hmm....but then how will the Avid read the FCP project file to reconnect to the footage?
Nope...I stand by my original answer. Output to XDCAM disk and recapture, or to HDCAM or HDCAM SR tape and recapture.

  • FCP to Avid Express HD 5.0 Workflow

I am about to start on the edit of a new project.
My editor uses Avid Express HD 5.0 and I use FCP Pro latest version.
The source is HDV. It is a five camera synchronised shoot of a rock concert.
I would normally use multiclip in FCP to line everything up and take it from there.
Is it best to let an assistant do the line up in Avid rather than FCP ?
Once the project is edited in Avid I want to do sub edits/captions/titles and prep for DVD in Final Cut Studio so what's the best way of taking the project back ?
Can the tapes be captured once and then files reused etc. etc.
    Any tips or advice welcome.

    Hi there,
as an avid & fcp editor I would suggest the following workflow. I am assuming you are the director/producer possibly online editor since you said "my editor uses avid xpress pro hd".
If he is more comfortable using avid for this then let him. He will be far more productive on a system he knows and trusts, and lets face it Avid do know what they are doing, they have been in the broadcast market for years now so they can be trusted!
.digitise the project into avid in HDV native
.let him cut the project as he/you see fit and take it to picture lock.
.when it is locked play it out to tape (in HDV mode on the avid)
.digitise that tape into your FCP finishing suite, overlaying the edl export from avid onto a seperate video layer so you can see where the cuts are(or use automatic duck) and finsh the project there.
but please DO NOT go back and re digitise your tapes. HDV is appalling at giving any kind of sensible t/code output that you can replicate in a conform or re-digitise situation IMO (check the forums) so stay inside your NLE and squirt it out native!
    best of luck!

  • FCP and Avid Quicktime codecs

I'm using FCP most recent version and a work colleague needs some footage from me. He's on a PC using Avid.
He's given me Avid Quicktime LE codec for the MAC asking if I can export something that works with this codec because its high quality.
I don't suppose in any way that FCP can actually use this to export in?
I exported the footage originally in AppleProRes 422 which is the highest quality I can seem to get. However, 422 can't be read on the PC and legacy versions even of FCP.
I want to get the footage to him in the highest possible quality.
    Any comments?

  • Taking files from FCP to Avid or Grassvalley

In the hopes of avoiding the cost of sending tapes, I am wanting to post video clips for news sources.
Currently I am posting DV25 video clips of various size - works great when I download and stick into a time line on FCP... but Avid users are running into issues of quality degradation. I think this is happening with some Grassvalley users too. I do not have specifics on the end user's systems, just a basic idea of what types of systems they are working on.
Does anyone have any suggestions on file formats that I can create that would maintain quality and ease of use?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

  • Vegas 7 vs FCP vs Avid - methodology

I am an editor using FCP 5 and have used Avid a lot. The client that I am about to work for wants me to edit on Vegas because all the footage is already captured. I would love to stay on a Mac in FCP or even use Avid Express. How simple is it to cut in FCP on a Mac, the transfer/consolidate/transpose files and my cut to work on a PC in Vegas. The media is mostly PAL DVCAM so it's not large files. I would like to make this work but not sure of technical restrictions, etc. Thanks. Craig

    Hi Craig,
As Thrillcat has said the footage from a Vegas capture can be used in FCP this is one of those times where you need to show your professional technical prowess in addition to your artistic merit as an editor.
Thank the client for digitising the footage since it has saved you some time and effort and tell them you will be completing the project on a mac in FCP because its the workflow you recommend and prefer.
Frankly if they turn stubborn it might be for the best to just let this one go.

  • EDL list from FCP for AVID

    Hi,
My client wants to edit with me and then export the EDL with time code to take to an AVID editor who will remake the same piece just with digibeta source tapes. Is this possible? If so, where can I look to figure out the details which seem to be many.
    Thank you kindly.
    Steve

You can export an EDL and if it is a simple edit with no real effects and speed changes and such it should work
    File > Export > EDL...
Leave most of the settings at default. Pull a seperate EDL for each video layer. Under EDL notes, uncheck all of those options. Start time 01.00.00.00. Audio mapping depends on what you have done in the edit.
And definitely do a test to the Avid and hand check the EDL before sending it over. As the above poster said, Automatic Duck is the way to go but it costs $$, you've already got EDL functionality in FCP. EDLs are old technology and don't transfer much information so check, test, and recheck.

  • FCP to Avid Liquid

I know you can use automatic duck to convert an FCP file to AVID Xpro or media composer. Is there a way to bring a project to AVID liquid or Premiere? Can you use XML for this? Or if I created cinema tools database files for the media, and generated ALE's, would that work? It is HDCam material captured directly to a drive in DV resolution.
And what exactly is XML for anyway? I know you can use it to transport projects and bins in between FCP systems, but you could just use a project file for that.... why use XML?

XML is for getting out of FCP to other places, outside of FCP.
Can you send me your FCP project file (zip it before sending), I'd be curious if it could be imported into Liquid.
Pro Import PPro can import an XML 1.0 file from FCP into Premiere Pro.

  • Converting FCP to Avid for export to BETA SP?

I'm currently doing some post-production work for a TV commercial that needs to be saved on SP BETA Tape for Comcast to broadcast it. Unfortunately, I don't have the Betamax equipment to do this.
A company that I work with does have this equipment, but they're using an Avid post-production environment. What file format can I give the Avid folks that will enable them to import it into their Avid system and save it to SP BETA Tape?
    Thanks!

ops! Sorry. I'm still learning the terminology.
NO problem...we all gotta start somewhere. Just wanted to avoid embarassment at the post house.
We really haven't decided on a format yet.
YOu haven't figured out what format you will be shooting yet? AH. Well, a lot of consideration will have to go into that. And depending on the format, you might need a capture card, and if you do, then you have the ability to output to beta yourself.
If the ANIMATION codec you're suggesting allows us to import that file format directly into Avid, wouldn't that be the best to use?
No....not really. ANIMATION is a good transfer codec, but the file sizes and data rate is too big to make it practical for editing.

  • How to split audio tracks into left and right channels as we do in FCP or Avid needed for dubbing?

We are recording in two languages, one in left and the other in right channel. However, in Adobe Premiere Pro we are not able to split the track when we take up for rought cut. Both the tracks are found mixed. Pl help. Since we need to maintian the split track to dubb into other languages.

You need to do this before adding the footage to the sequence:
Select the clip (or multiple clips) in the bin
Menu > Clip > Modify > Audio Channels (Shift G)
Change 'Number of Audio Tracks' to 2
    Change 'Channel Format' to Mono
    Dismiss the info message.
When you place the clip in a sequence it will now drop L and R into separate tracks (assuming your sequence allows that audio model).

  • FCP 7 (FCS 3) and AVID media Composer 6 together?

Is anyone using FCP 7 (Final Cut Studio 3 and all related software) and AVID media Composer 6 together on the same operating system?
If so which one are you using - Snow Leopard or Lion and are there any Issues with either?
    Cheers

I bought MC 5.5 last summer, and upgraded to 6 when it came out. I have FCP 7 and family installed on the same system as well as CS5. All work great. I have this setup on a 2011 13" MBP running Lion. It works great. I like having all three on the same system, it really gives me a lot of flexibility. And I also have the same setup on a 2010 iMac 27, only this one has Snow Leopard and MC 5.5. I'm getting ready to switch it to MC 6, and take the MBP back to Snow Leopard though, it's just been sluggish since the upgrade. Other than that, I've had no problems with FCP and Avid living in the same house, if fact it's just been plain handy.

  • Can I get markers in FCP to work like locators in Avid?

    Hi all,
I am used to working with Avid's locators. I might be working on an episode of television and I will put a locator at each commercial break for easy navigation while the director and I are still fine cutting. If we extend a segment, then the locators all shuffle down accordingly.
I am trying to replicate this in FCP. It seems if I use sequence markers then they stay locked to the timecode and will therefore drift away from our commercial breaks as we fine cut.
If I add clip markers to clips in the sequence then they stay in the right place - but there doesn't seem to be anyway of navigating to them quickly. Well, I can go shift up arrow and down arrow, but I might have to go through a few to get to where I'm going. Ideally I would like them to show up in the scrubber bar in the canvas, like Avid's locators, or like the FCP sequence markers. Or to have a little list pop up of my markers so that I can click directly on the one that I want. (Like Avid's locator window.) Is this possible? Am I missing the obvious?
    Thanks!

Being an Avid man myself I have to say that I really dislike the MARKERS that FCP has to offer. I am too used to the LOCATORS and the wonderful way they work.
But...FCP is FCP and Avid is Avid...so whatchagonnado? Let Apple know that you want this changed. I did.
