FCP to iDVD

I finally exported a nice looking video and when I put it into iDVD, it smashed everything down and the quality *****. I need help exporting in the correct format and making it look good in iDVD. The video is only 2.5 minutes long and is comprised of still photos, iPhone 4 video, and Motion non-animated text. Very simple stuff, but it's taken me all afternoon to get it to export correctly. Please, please help.

Hi
My (unsorted ! ) thoughts about this
*How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do*
• Disable Screen and Energy saver
• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
*Free space on Start-up hard disk*
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding
*Brand and type of DVDs used*
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
*Burn speed set*
• I set down this to x4 (or x1)
*iDVD BUG*
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
*Use of Chapters*
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it stlf
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
*Material used to build movie*
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
If Problems.
Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving

  • What format to export from FCP for iDVD?

I am having trouble coming from FCP to iDVD. Material was shot HDV on a Sony Z5 and I downconverted to DV to edit on FCP. I make a Quick Time Movie of the edit (as DV PAL) but the pans are all juddery. How should I export from FCP to stop the juddering on pans?

BTW, this is the mother of all FAQs here Sadly the FAQ section of the forum decribes just the problem, not any solutions. And searching the forums doesn't always work either.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC using Compressor, FCP or iDVD?

    Hi guys,
I'm currently editing some PAL footage from a Canon DSLR which has been compressed into an Apple Prores which measures 1920 x 1080.
I need to put my finished project on a DVD so it to play in the US.
Should I export to NTSC in FCP, Compressor or simply setup iDVD as an NTSC project and hope that dropping my completed PAL is converted into NTSC?
What are my options to convert my PAL footage into NTSC and at what stage should I do it?
Finally what NTSC video format would be ideal for HD video on DVD?
    Thanks in advance!

You could pay to have a post facility do the conversion, which would give the best quality. OR, do your standards conversion in Compressor or in JES Deinterlacer.
Giving iDVD an NTSC 1080 Pro Res file may work well. Do a test on a short representative section of your movie and see. If it doesn't meet your expectations, go into Compressor and resize to 729x480 anamorphic (PAR of .84); turn on Frame Controls and set Resize Filter to Best. Submit and then bring that into iDVD.
No doubt you appreciate that all DVDs are SD and that the end product, while potentially quite good, is compromised in image quality compared to your high rez original. If you want higher resolution, you have two options: red laser AVCHD disks for videos <20 minutes or Blu Ray, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
    Good luck.

  • From FCP to iDVD?

I haven't tried it yet, but I was wondering if its possible/easy to export a finished FCP movie into iDVD for the DVD production?
I didn't have enough hard drive space for everything from the FCP package, and so until I can get a better computer, or until I get more space, I only installed the essentials, which means I didn't install DVD Studio.

DVD Studio Pro itself isn't a large installation, it's just the supporting media for templates and such that will take up the extra space.
For iDVD, from FCP export a self-contained Quicktime movie, then import that to iDVD.
Honestly, you should take a look at using the FCP > Compressor > DVDSP workflow, since this will give you a lot more control over the encoding and mastering process.

  • Burning anamorphic QT from FCP in iDVD-3

    Hi There
I'm exporting a quicktime movie from an fcp project using a 24FPS timeline in anamorphic mode. I imported the Quicktime movie into iDVD 3 will start to burn but quits half way through. I've wasted about 4 DVD's so far using this setup does anyone know what could be the problem.
    Thanks in advance

but I have QT 10.......I should drop to QT 7??
Like I said: you must have Quicktime 7 running. Anamorphizer will NOT work with Quicktime X.
If you don't have QT 7 running when you try to use Anamorphized, it will try to use QT X which won't work.
From another of my postings on the topic:
    Get Anamorphizer at http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).

  • FCP to iDVD: "unsupported file type"?

Anyone know how to resolve this? I exported a 63 second FCP video out in numerous ways: QT self-contained; QT not self-contained, and QT Conversion with the following compression settings: H.264, Video, and uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2. I opened iDVD and whether I drug the file into the window or imported it, each time I got a message saying "Unsupported fiel type: Video is over 90 minutes
I have no idea what this is about and do not know who to correct for it. Do you? Thanks so much, Peggy

I had the same issue and after 3 hours of trying to figure out how to tix it, I quit iDVD, restarted the computer, and voila, it worked. Go figure.

  • Pixellation issues FCP to iDVD

    Hi
Am finally mastering a project after 6 months hard work and getting very frustrated as the DVDs I am creating in iDVD have occasional pixellation problems.
I am using FCP 5 to export a reference movie to iDVD 7. I am editing DVC Pro HD 1080i footage.
Have set iDVD to Professional quality and 1x burning speed.
The problem is occasional "pixellated" horizontal lines accross the screen, maybe two pixels wide. This usually just lasts a frame or two, sometimes longer.
Also one or two times a white pixellated square will appear briefly on the screen.
Have tried rerendering the entire footage (its 38 mins of green screen with a few animations) and watched thru entire footage to make sure there were no render errors. There were a few, the same type of problem as appeared on the DVD which is odd FCP usually renders fine for me. So I rerendered those clips and tried burning a new DVD. Same problem.
I really want to FINISH this project and give it to my client so I can get paid and move on - so would be grateful for any solutions!
    Thanks!

I have also tried burning a second dvd from the same iDVD session - ie when the first one is finished burning and it asks if I want to burn another I put another DVD in machine.
The second one also had glitches but not in the same places which suggests to me that the problem is not in the source material but with iDVD or the DVD burner - not sure which.
My next idea which I'll try tomorrow is to output a complete quicktime movie, instead of a reference movie and try burning on another computer - but any other suggestions very welcome.
May also reinstall iDVD though it seems to be working. Has anyone else has problems with version 7? I have had good results with it before.

  • Going from FCP to idvd

Please help me in the easiest terms possible! What is the best (easiest!) way to compress a file from FCP so that I can use idvd to burn it? It is a 3 hour wedding video.

The normal process in FCP is the same whether you're eventually going to iDVD or to Compressor then DVD-SP.
Step 1: Export a QuickTime Movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie). Do NOT recompress all frames, but do include chapter markers (if needed). You can make the movie self-contained or not (I prefer self-contained movies but you will need more space than for a reference movie).
Step 2: Use the resulting file in Compressor. Choose an appropriate preset based on your program's run time. If no preset exists for the run time you have, duplicate a preset then adjust the bit rate to accommodate the longer run time. Make sure you use AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio - not AIFF. Once you have the settings you need, let Compressor do it's thing. You'll end up with an MPEG-2 video file (.m2v) and a Dolby Digital audio file (.ac3).
Step 3: Import the two files from Compressor into DVD-SP for authoring and burning.
Note that with a program that long, you won't have much space for menus or any other extras which is why I recommended using dual-layer media.
This tool may help in determining the bit rate you need to use: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/bitbudget.html

  • FCP and iDVD

I want to use one of the themes in iDVD with a movie I created in FCP. What's the highest quality format to export out of FCP and and put in iDVD? .DV and .mov seem to look a little weird. The discs I burned in MPEG2 format for DVD studio pro looks a lot better but Studio Pro doesn't have the theme I want to use.

The format that you should export is the exact same that you have been editing in. If you choose Export > QuickTime Movie, then FCP will automatically export using the same codec and setting you have been using in your sequence. This is the best way to export to iDVD.

  • FCP to iDVD to TV. bad quality

Hi, I decided to join after years of experimenting and self learning.
I need help in producing the best quality DVD to watch on TV .
    here is what I do:
I ues FCP in making the quicktime movie , of course the output is huge appr. 30GB for 1 hour movie
I convert it using video convertor pro into .mov but much smaller appr. 1GB. ( resolution 768x756 to 1280x720)
I add it into IDVD menu. using profitional quality and low speed burning.
the results, still not happy with the quality.
    could someone help.
    Thanks

What you are doing is totally wrong with unnecessary steps.
    1. The size of your FCP project is unimportant  ......  it could be hundreds of gigabytes with no problem.
    2. What does matter is the length of your project  .......  it shouldn't be more than a couple of hours or so.
    So what do you do?
Simply create a QT Movie and drop it onto the iDVD interface, choose menus/titles etc. and click "Burn"..
Whatever its size, iDVD will then accurately compress it so that it fits perfectly onto a DVD.

  • FCP to iDVD?    HELP!!

I have 4+ years experience in iMovie and iDVD. Not as much in FCP.
I have a 30 second FCP 16:9 commercial to output to iDVD.
Can I output a file that is compatible with iDVD?
    How do I do this?

Let me post the stock answer so that it shows how EASY it is to do in DVD SP
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Exporting Chapter Markers in FCP for iDVD

Suddenly, I can not get idvd to recognize any of the chapter markers I exported from FCP. It had always worked in the past but for some reason doesn't anymore. Is anyone else having this problem?
    G5 2GHZ Dual Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Well, you either put the markers on the CLIP (not on the timeline where it should be) or you changed something that broke the tenuous connection that holds everything together in the time/life continuum.

I am having trouble exporting quicktimes from FCP and bringing them into iDVD.
How do you make Chapter Markers on an export from FCP?

When creating chapter markers, make sure nothing is slected within your timeline (click in a blank space before hitting m). Hit m again and click chapter marker button.
When exporting your sequence, be sure to select Markers > Chapter Markers on the export dialog popup.

  • Exporting from FCP to iDVD to properly display on 16:9 and 4:3 TV

For some reason I cannot get my DVD (made in iDVD 5) to display right on 16:9 and 4:3 TV. Here is my info:
    1. My clip is 720x480, anamorphic checked (fills up the canvas beautifully)
    2. I export to QT movie DV NTSC 48 kHz (or DV NTSC 48 kHz anamorphic, this doesn't make any difference in the final result)
    3. To display it as a widescreen in iDVD 5 I open the clip in QT Pro and change "Visual Settings" in "Movie Properties" to scaled size 853x480, than save. (That's a fix from one of the Apple articles)
    3. When I import it to iDVD it displays it as "widescreen preview" and burns it as such
    4. DVD comes out as widescreen, but when played on 4:3 TV doesn't display  letterboxed.
*5. How do I make it to play widescreen on 16:9 and letterboxed on 4:3?*
        - I tried to use the Anamorphicizer with many different clip-exporting options, but it never worked.
        - I also tried to use a couple of programs to change the iDVD's .ISO file, but I am not a programmer and couldn't get those programs do work for me.
        - I ordered iLife '08. Is there a fix in the new iDVD version?
        - I could use the Studio Pro, but I don't have a time to fix all those buttons, connect them to chapters, etc...  Seems like the developers should have done it for us to work as simple as iDVD.
I would appreciate any reasonable solution.

I am a five year final cut/idvd user and I am completely bewildered why my exported quicktime 720/480 movie with chapters and not widescreen defaults to widescreen in IDVD. I have tried everything, 5 days of tech help, and even brought it to the store where they couldn't figure it out..I don't know how to use studio pro but toast burns it fine 4:3 and doesn't stretch it like widescreen. Is this a bug or problen in ilife08?? I am so sad if I cant use IDVD...it has beem such a great program///how difficult is studio pro? AMy suggestions? I am working on a mACBOOK PRO...AND NEWEST FINAL CUT
