FCP to tape

This is probably really easy only I've never had to deal with it. The video was shot and edited in DVCPRO HD 720p60 at 23.97 fps. Somebody is requiring that I show it to them on a Mini-DV tape. I hook up the HVX via FireWire. Press record/pause on the HVX in VCR mode. Then choose tape out from FCP.
When I hit start, the video starts playing on my computer and the camera switches from pause to record. Only nothing shows up on the camera. The tape isn't recording anything and there's no timecode or anything.
So what's up?...

You are trying to feed the DV part of that camera a DVCPRO HD signal. Won't work. You need to first convert your footage to DV, then output to tape. QUick way would be to output back to the P2 card, then in camera dump that footage to tape (designed to do this)...or export a QT movie, reimport it, drop it into a DV sequence and then output to tape...after you render it.

  • DVCPRO capture issues - FCP or tape issue ?

Can anyone help me rule out whether this is a tape issue or a problem with my system ?
Trying to capture from DVC PRO tapes - problem is I don't know if they are DVC PRO 25 , DVC PRO 50, or HD
(we inherited these tapes from another company, who shot them but is not being forthcoming about how they shot...)
I have a Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck hooked up to Final Cut 5.1.4 via 6pin firewire (G5)
I start playing tape with regular DV NTSC settings in Log & Capture, timecode seems to be rolling continuously, the deck display says i is DVC PRO 50 - then I hit Capture Now and I get a freeze frame, and an error message :
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted.
So is it the tape ?
The weird thing is I was able to capture up to about 10 min of the first tape.
Even when playing back, something changes on the tape at about 10 min - but what ? Timecode is continuous - what coudl change and make it uncapturable ?.

Did you choose the proper Easy Setup? You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage, so FCP knows what sort of signal to expect. If you try capturing DVCPRO 50 as DV/NTSC, then you would get this error.

  • How to use FCP with tapes that have free run timecode

i have a bunch of tapes the were shot with 4 x Sony HDV-Z1P cameras. the timecode was set to free run in the cameras and all the cameras were synced by resetting the timecode on all the cameras at the same time. and on each tape the cameraman has buttoned on and off probably 8 times a tape or so which means on free run timecode that there is timecode breaks on the tapes,
can anyone tell me the right setting i should be using in FCP so that i can capture the tapes easily (prefer to capture a whole tape in one go) and with the timecode from the tapes, so that the TC shows the jumps when the camera was not recording.
i tried capture now and setting the user preference to ' on TC break, warn after capture. but it captured without the gaps in the timecode, so when the cameraman buttons off-the captured timecode is still continous. and this means i loss matching the tc between the cameras

you need to set it to Make New Clip, no other setting will give you correct timecode for all clips ... you cannot capture accross timecode breaks and have the timecode jump to reflect those breaks. nle software does not work this way.
once you have captured your media (4 x the number of clips per reel) then you can select them all and choose Modify > Make Multicip Sequence

  • Soundtrack for FCP from tapes

    Hi there,
I need to import into my project a series of old commentaries that were orginally recorded on tapes.
Can I use an ADVC100 (canopus) that I have at hand ?
If yes could someone advise me and guide me for best settings to be used
    Many thanks
    Ivan

    The Canopus should work.
Connect your tape machine's audio output to the Canopus's audio IN
Open up Audio Midi Setup (it's found in your applications>utilities folder) and set the Canopus as the default device for Input and 48khz as the sample rate.
Open up Soundtrack Pro. On the right side of the application window, select the Recording tab. For Track 1, set the input to the Canopus, stereo and two chanels (1 & 2) and set it as the target recording track.
Play the tape and hit the Record button on the bottom of the Mixer window.
If you are unsure how to use STP, the help manual is reasonably written.
Otherwise, QT Pro 7 may be a simpler way to go for simple audio recording.
    Good luck,

  • Really bad image quality when burning

Hi, i am very new at this discussion thing and am a french speaker so hope i do this ansking question ok.
I'm having problems with image quality of my 1h46 min movie imported from imovie (initially from quicktime made from final cut pro). I am having pixelly images when camera is moving... Although have read some things about this on the forum none of the answers seem to resolve my problem.
I have selected best quality in my prefs but with no success. I figure it's a compression / codec problem but i do not have a clue about all this technical stuff. I don't know what next move i should make.
    Thanks for any help...

    Hi ! Thanx for responding...
In FCP i did choose export DV/NTSC and imported from camera with apple firewire NTSC (720x480). Should i have imported material in (640x480/30fps/interlaced...) ?
I have had this problem with smaller projects of 20 min of video also so i don't think it has to do with size... At the moment i am making a disc image of my dvd on my desktop hoping to burn through Toast. Otherwise i am also thinking about exporting movie from FCP to tape then importing back to iMov through camera...
I'm kind of desperate and don't really know what to do... I'm also gonna start reading compressor 2 and maybe forget about iDVD an d just burn it through toast. Wich is kind of dissapointing cause without interface, menu and all...

I'd suspect a problem with the VTR since it's exhibiting an error message. Look in the VTR manual or Panasonic's support site for the meaning of the error code.
To help verify/isolate the problem, try swapping VTRs with one of the other edit stations.

output has about 350KB but quality is bad. What can (must) i do to
better quality of video materials ? (eventually to get original mov
    quality), please help me :)

Thanks for the reply. I work in an educational environment, and as always, we're looking for ways to cut tape cost and/or go tapeless. I want to be able record blog videos for our website, as well as student meetings. Last year, we burned a lot of tape on content we'll never use, or want to archive, but we have plenty of HD space. We would still shoot to tape for "major student projects".
We're using two Sony HDR-FX1's and several Cannon Optura 400's (used primarily for mundane daily tasks). I've been experimenting with recording straight to my MacBook Pro and a FW drive using Quicktime Pro (creating H.264 video), then VeeScope Live (creating full DV/DVCPRO NSTC video).
My grand plan would be plugging in the camera directly to the MBP (with an external HD connected), recording into QT or VeeScope, then importing that video into FCP, eliminating tape altogether. I tried it, and had no issues with either program, other than the extra step of converting the .mov files from QT. Hence my question about the difference in quality. I like the scopes in VS - something that the students should learn to use while shooting anyway.

  • HDCAM SR uncompressed codec

    Hi all,
I have an upcoming job where I have to remaster HDCAM SR for international sale. A large majority of the work will be tape-to-tape editing, but I need to layoff the textless graphics from FCP to tape to complete the international versions.
I have never mastered to HDCAM SR and was wondering what codec I should be using, the media needs to be completely uncompressed to ensure no loss whatsoever.
I'm using a dual-channel fibre channel storage system so datarates should not be too much of a problem.
I'll be using Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro (Dual link), and Sony SRW 5800. Will I need to use the dual link functionality of the capture card/deck???
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks
    Dave

Yes, the frame size for both is 1920 X 1080. Through the Aja Kona 3, single link 4:2:2 uncompressed is about 140 MB/sec, dual link 4:4:4 RGB uncompressed is about 237 MB/sec (those are the bandwidth figures using the Aja presets; I assume the BMD presets are similar.)
Because drive arrays when full deliver about half the throughput as when they are empty, your storage sub-system should benchmark at least twice the bandwidth of the codec you'll be using. In your case, your external array should be giving you nearly 500 MB/sec when empty, or you might experience dropped frames as the array fills up.
If the station or network is not using dual link 4:4:4 RGB, then it makes no sense to deliver it to them. But again, you'll need to ask them what they need.

  • BitVice 1.6 and HDV Encoding

Anybody have suggestions for taking 16:9 HDV to DVD SP using BitVice?
I've been experimenting, but am just looking for some suggestions, settings, etc. to maximize the downconvert

    Hi David,
I use it in Shake and AE but its also Digital Fusion compatible.
    http://www.algolith.com/index.php?id=algosuite
Their pre sales support is pretty quick. So I would just ask. In addition for about $60 you can get a weeks license. So you can be sure it's going to work for you. Because I am in PAL land and I don't have any access to NTSC footage sorry.
My workflow is to work native until conform.
Compositing is Native and output through Shake and Algolith,
3D and 3D tracking is also added here in Shake via Boujou,
Then Final Touch, only special effects shots are currently uncompressed.
Then I use automatic duck to export from FCP 5 to AE 6.5 for final conform where an uncompressed master is created.
Then FCP to tape or uncompressed to CCE.
    Have fun.

  • AVi Edit and Export

Am just about to work on a TV show where they want the projects i do for them sent as...
Video: AVI using the Matrox DV/DVCAM codec 720x576 @ 25fps
Audio: AVI using Uncompressed AVI stream 2ch @ 48kHz
Am guessing they use a Matrox system to broadcast so my question is if they already have the material converted to go out in there system and they want me to do things with it is it possible for them to send me the Matrox AVI's and i edit them in FCP but what would i export them as to send them back for broadcast???
Its a music video mix show so instead of me getting the betas from the record labels and then get them converted to edit in FCP and then out to convert to the required Matrox Codec they want wouldnt it be easier for them to send me the AVI's they broadcast already to edit and send back???
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

I think if you have the original files as something FCP can work with directly, you stay in that format while you edit. THEN in the end convert it to the format they need for their system.
Theory always states to stay as close to native as possible until the very end when you recompress to the delivery format. FCP will work much better with files that are captured via FCP from Tape...

  • Broken Timecode during capture  in FCP 5.04 Tape does not have broken time?

I am trying to capture video froma mini dv canon camera and fcp is telling me that there is broken timecode. I have checked it with imov with no problem and when I view the tape there is no broken timecodde? can anyone help

    iMovie does not use timecode.
Canons are notorious for weak timecode and firewire support. Try capturing the tape using another DV player.

  • HDV tape random capture aborts in FCP

I am trying to capture many hours of HDV footage to disc. Capture Now is aborting frequently either due to alleged timecode breaks or alleged stream problems. But in fact the breaks seem to occur at random: on second or third attempts, capture passes smoothly over the supposed break point, only to abort again later on. I am rarely able to capture more than a minute at a time. Here are the hard facts:
Tapes are Maxell Professional DV-M63Master ME DV/HDV, recorded on only once
Camera for both shooting and playback is Sony HVR-V1P, connnected via FireWire to:
    iMac G4 1.25 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, running OS X 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6
Capture disc is G-Tech 1TB G-drive, connected via FireWire (just bought to replace LaCie drive in the hope that it would solve the problem)
FCP is set to abort capture on dropped frames and on timecode break (I understand that this second option makes no difference with HDV anyway). I don't want to miss frames that are actually on the tape.
I know lots of people have had similar problems, and I've tried all the suggestions I have found on the forums. Have I missed something?

    Julian,
With all due respect, you're asking quite a bit from a single G4 system. If you were back on Tiger and running FCP 5.1.4 you'd have maybe 25% more power, but you're real close to the edge. (I still have a dual 1.25 GHz G4 PowerMac and experimented with FCS2 on it...)
Attaching a fast disk array (RAID) might help a bit, but I doubt the central problem is disk speed. In reality, I think you only need to maintain something like 5MB/sec data transfer rate for HDV, but there is overhead processing and I'm guessing that a system that age probably has some "baggage."
I'd suggest that you freshen up the system by exporting non-critical data from the system drive until you have about 20-30% free space, repair permissions, run your crons (a utility like MacJanitor or Cocktail will do this) and run Disk Warrior on all attached drives. The point is to clean out the system to provide max efficiency at the basic level. You may need to disable apps that like to run in background and maybe even take the system off the net while working. If you can re-gain the original performance, you will probably make it through...
    Good luck!

  • File Crashing FCP - Can import from different tape brand be at fault?

I always use Sony Premium mini DV tapes and import my video through my Sony DSR-11 miniDV deck into FCP.
I was recently handed a Fujifilm miniDV tape. The video imported fine. But once I dragged it to the timeline, rendering any transitions or filters caused big gray boxes to appear on the video. Sound also fell. I was able to make it work - but the exported file retained the boxes at different places each time I exported.
Now the file doesn't open at all and it crashes FCP. All other files on my system still open and export fine except for this one.
My question is 1. whether the change of tape brand can cause the import to go haywire.
and 2. Is there any way I can open this file? I trashed preferences and restarted with no luck.
Any suggestions ar emuch appreciated. Thanks!
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 4 GB DDR SDRAM

I've never had the same experience, so this is purely speculation.
Changing brands used in the same camcorder has been reported as the cause of recording & playback problems. But, since the playback from the DSR was okay, I'm guessing the brand isn't the problem.
Could be the camcorder settings don't match your FCP settings?
What if you copied the Fuji tape to Sony tape in your camcorder. That way you would have control of both the tape and the camcorder settings.

  • Buggy DV-tape = poor quality capture in FCP! Or does it?

    Hi all!
I'm in a bit of trouble. The thing is as follows: I've shot some video of my 5 month old son, two 60 minute FUJI tapes. My wife and I would like to make a DVD as a Christmas gift for our parents. The first tape is good, no problem what so ever capturing it into FCP 5.2.1, it just runs like a charm! However, right around tape two, is where my life becomes less funny. FCP simply refuses to capture anything beyond the first 25 minutes. It claims that something is wrong with the tape, and then it stops. If I try to carry on, FCP will continue for about 3 seconds, then 11 seconds, then 1 minute and so on. So I kinda gave up on that approach.
I also have iMovie HD, and just for the fun of it, I gave the same tape a spin in iMovie ... It went for it - the very first time. The quality leaves a lot to be desired though. The image quality is buggy as if frames are being skipped or dropped, the sound is poor, it keeps breaking up, in the same spots as where the frames goes bye-bye! However, it is now on my computer. It should be mentioned that I DID NOT extract the audio in iMovie HD
Having a huge amount o faith in FCP + Soundtrack Pro, I did the unthinkable: I imported the iMovie clips into FCP, and there they are, just sitting there, lauging at me!
I think I have some of the breaking-up sound issues under control with the ambient sound footprint-thingie. It sounds a lot better now that I have been able to fill in the "blanks" in the STP editor.
Here comes my real question... Finally:
Is there a way to (as easy as possible) fix/cut out the video problem areas as well? In STP the sound is represented in a visual, very easy to understand kind of way, where I'm able to spot the gaps as flat lines in between the sound. Does FCP have a similar view, or anything as usefull?
Is it clear at all what I'm trying to say, or is it just plain garbage??
    Anyway, thanks in advance!
BTW: Can you guys recommned any DV-Tapes as being superior to others. I'm not really too keen on FUJI right now, and if there is a problem with the tape, you only find out when it's too late: at the editing table!

You should use the head cleaner every 100 hrs. or so and ideally you would take it in once every few years to get a professional cleaning, depending on the camera.
There's also cleaning of the lenses and light dusting of the camera body every week or so, depending on how often you shoot. Make sure you use a microfiber cloth that's safe for use on camera lenses, since other subtly-abrasive cloths that may appear to be acceptable may scratch and subsequently damage the lens.
Start out with a head Cleaner. The ones that look like a tape that you play in the camera for a few seconds. That'll probably fix your problem in the future. It it doesn't you might want to think about sending the camera in to be cleaned.
For now "capture now" using the non-controllable device setting to avoid any errors

  • Big Problem when Capturing DVCPro 50 tape with FCP 5.0.4

At the job we work with DVCPro 50 tapes wich I capture using the capture Preset DVCPro 50 NTSC, the images are perfect, but there is a problem with the sound it doesn't capture at the good frequence, exemple, if the capture provide 5 clips, the 3 or 4 first will be fine and the other one qill be at an audio rate of 47.* instead of 48 khz, does anyone had that problem already and if so, what can i do?? Cause now everything is off sync
    thanks

sorry to bother you, but you were the only reply. 3 sources were mini dv. 1 was hdv. the mini dv sources were converted using toast (by someone else). when all sources were put on the timeline, i got the redline render. so i rendered them (took many many hrs). then i exported them. this turned them into
fcp movie files. then i re imported them. currently the browser says they are all dv/dvcpro, ntsc ccir601, 720x480. the weird thing is that i can multiclip any of the two sources, but not 3 or more. any help would be appreciated. thx dr
