FCP truncates .wmv export?

Does FCP Pro stop exporting a .wmv file from a sequence because of some setting that I can control? I've tried on several projects and it stops half way through.

Welcome to the forum!
Can you post a little more about your system and what steps you're taking? OS, QT, FCP flip4mac versions as well as Mac info might help in diagnosing the problem.
Also, does the export stop at the exact same place every time? If so, it may be a corrupted media or render file. And one last thing; if you have the trail version of flip4mac, your WMV exports will be limited to 30 seconds or so.

  • Need help with a unique WMV export

Hi, everyone! This is my first post on this board. I have a sequence in Final Cut Pro that is three 640x480 clips laid out end-to-end to make a 1920x480 movie. The total length of the program is 7-8 minutes.
I am needing to export this from Compressor to a Windows Media format to run on a high-end PC that will show it on 3 projectors using a Matrox TripleHead2Go box in a theatre environment. The PC is a Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, and has an ATI Radeon X1300 Pro video card with 256 RAM.
The movie needs to be as close to DVD quality as possible. I have WMV Studio Pro HD installed. What recommendations can anyone make for the best settings I should use - in Final Cut, Compressor and with the WMV export - to get a full 1920x480 movie that will run smooth and as high quality as possible on the theatre PC?
    Thanks in advance.

I've found a wealth of knowledge at the Flip4Mac forum HERE.......Craig, the moderator, is quite the expert for questions like this.

  • FCP won't export MPEG2

Just upgraded my OS to 10.5.7 from 10.4.9. No other changes to the system have been made but now FCP 4 will not export MPEG2. FCP locks up every time I try. FCP will still export QT and others, just not MPEG2. Never been a problem in the past. Any ideas?

You were delightfully clear. My point it your previous experience doesn't count for anything because of the drastic change you've made to the computer.
Think of it this way. Your computer is a human body that someone decides to do a heart transplant on even though the current heart seems to be functioning just peachy. Not only do they do a heart transplant, they don't bother to fully remove the previous version but simply splice in a few new valves and maybe a larger diameter aorta. So, this poor guy wakes up the next morning and finds that he can't walk because the new cobbled up heart just doesn't function as well as the older perfectly functioning one. All this flies in the face of the assurances of the Doctors (Apple marketing dept). They told him everything would be WONDERFUL when they were finished. Yea, right.
Let's not forget your liver 4.5 is not supported by heart 10.5.7

  • Fcp 7 not exporting self contained

Hi, help me out. Fcp 7 is exporting reference movie which doesnt play on other systems. I need to create a self contained movie for distribution. But neither quicktime conversion  nor checking 'make self contained' is helping out. I'm doubtful whether there r some special system settings to be checked or some export setting need to altered. Or a program error?

Please post your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Where is WMV export?

Sadly a client needs WMV files for a project (we prefer H264 Quicktime!) and although it clearly says in the Compressor Introduction video http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/compressor/ that WMV export is included, we can't find it anywhere! Where is it?
    Thanks!

Yeah...I ran into this too. Had to get Flip4Mac...Studio version for export. Very good, though...didn't break my bank, either.

  • Audio falls out of sync with FCP sequence after export from STP

    Hey all,
editing sound on a short film. sent FCP sequence to sweeten the dialog and add effects, according to the timeline it is the same length as sequence length in
FCP, but when exporting from STP to FCP to complete movie, the sound ends up being about 10 frames longer than the video and starts in sync and falls out of sync over the duration of the film.
Have tried changing preference settings in STP, exported about 5 ways to breakfast and all have same result.
Anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Much thanks,
    Holly

I just experienced this same thing, and as Christof says, it had to do with 'Easy Setup' and 'all formats'. I've been editing a picture shot on RED in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) at 2K (2048 x 1152) and 24fps...FCS 3 (FCP 7 latest version). Whenever you trash preferences or start up FCP new, you get the 'easy setup' menu. Previously, I could just hit 'okay' and go ahead into FCP and change the settings/resolutions within the project...even if the 'easy setup' default was, say, DV/NTSC 29.97. Also, when opening up an active project after trashing prefs, the project itself would still have the same editing/playback settings/resolutions, even if the 'easy setup' window had its default DV/NTSC setting. Plus, if you create a new timeline and its default is one format, once you drop a different format into it, it asks you if it should adjust to that format anyway, and of course, you say yes and everything is fine.
Well....in this most recent FCP update, whenever I'd export an AIFF from the timeline and reimport....or if I'd just import an AIFF...it would do something to the playback rate of that newly imported/reimported sound file and suddenly its sync has drifted all over the place within just a minute or so. But strangely, it wouldn't do it to audio that's attached to picture (.mov/MP4/etc.)....only isolated audio files (AIFF/WAV). So naturally, I wondered if something was going on during the export process or the like.
The solution is to make sure that when you open FCP (newly, or after trashing prefs), make sure you pick the settings/format/framerate in that 'Easy Setup' window that matches what you intend to edit as closely as possible. In my case, the format is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 2048 x 1152 @ 24fps, and I use a Blackmagic Multibridge so I have settings for it. Hence......*Format; HD, Frame Rate: 24, Use: Blackmagic HDTV 1080P 24 - 10 bit.* Whereas the default upon startup is....Format: (all formats), Frame Rate: 29.97, Use: DV/NTSC 48KHz.
You can also set these in the 'Audio Video Settings' menu. Now, whenever I export and reimport an AIFF, or just import an AIFF (like the soundmix prepared by our sound designer), sync stays and there's no drift. So make sure you've picked the right settings when starting or reopening a project, again as Christof pointed out.

the results i get a odd. - the video exports fine, except for the beginning titles, instead a still frame image from somewhere else in the video occupies that intro, until the first transition- in this case- dip to white, then the rest of the video is fine. the portion of the beginning  that does not show are composed of:  livetype text credits in V2 - in which i have done a manual opacity fade up and down - so the livetype text fades in, over matte color solid in V1. in the exported video -i do not see any of this, all i see is a seemingly random still from somewhere else in the video. i can however hear the audio as it is supposed be.
cant figure out why this is happening. anybody know?
    i think the livetype files are 1920 x 1080.
my FCP sequence is 720 p
this has only recently started happening and doesn't seem to be consistent.
im wondering if it has to do with the live type files, or the white solid?…
    or the conversion settings above?

Earlybird is exporting H264 ... the Key Frames setting is determining the GOP length. This value should really be determined based on the complexity of the video, to my understanding, the actual frame rate has no bearing on it. If you have very complex fast moving content then a low Key Frame rate is advisable to ensure good image quality (although it will adversely affect the filesize) whereas if you have slow moving or static content (like an interview subject) then a higher Key Frame rate will still produce a good image but at a smaler filesize. The default of 24 should be pretty much fine as a catchall starting point.
    Earlybird
Corrupted render files (and render references) can be a pain because FCP will use those files and references  in place of the original media when building the export. And so it should as it does't want to waste time re-rendering sections that are apparently already rendered. Unfortuantely, as noted, if the render file has gone bad and/or starts referencing the wrong media then you'll get these wierd flashes of completely unexpeced and unwanted footage showing up where it shouldn't be. When you trash those files then QT / FCP will just go back and re-reference the original media ... so it's usually a worthwhile step to take just in case thats the problem.  The worse case scenario is that it only that doesn't work and you spend some time unecessarily re-rendering.
As to why these files go bad? That I don't know. Why do Preferences get corrupted? That I don't know either but it definitely happens :-(

  • QT 7 Pro (Windows) missing WMV export option?  It's in QT/Mac...

Bought QT Pro for my wife's XP computer, so she can convert small .mov files from textbook-bundled CDs to .avi/cinepak or wmv so that powerpoint can import them natively, and she can give them to teaching assistants to use in class sections. The exported file, when properties are viewed, has the exact same specs and codec as an avi file that plays fine within powerpoint. WMV plays them fine standalone.
Except, using the Window QT 7 pro, the converted .avi files will play within powerpoint (2003). It thinks it can read the avi (powerpoint will import them) and the slide shows the preview, but things just goes blank when you attempt to play. No error messages, no sound, no disk activity.
If I put the original .mov on my Mac, and export it with QT Pro, I have WMV 9 audio and video export formats available. QT Pro 7 Windows, has only mp4 (no formats of which are readable natively in powerpoint) and other non-useful formats, not including WMV9. It's just not there. avi w/cinepak/InterVideo etc. also fail to be properly formatted- they don't play in powerpoint.
What gives? The Windows version of QT Pro can't export to WMV format, the only one that goes natively into powerpoint?
The mp4 might be playable if I update to the latest directX, but you can't count on everyone having that, while WMV just works. And the Mac version actually works?
Granted powerpoint isn't the best thing but it is clear to me that the QT-exported avi is not properly formatted. And wy is there no WMV option- it's not ghosted as if the file was wont bit depth or or something for the format, it's just not an option when exporting from the Windows version of QT Pro.
If I wanted to et her up with ffmpegX and make this complicated, I could have. Buying the QT Pro was supposed to make it easy.
    Thoughts?

sorry for typos, to make it clear, .avi files converted by QT 7 Pro Windows from .mov do NOT play in Powerpoint 2003, although they do import. The video codec and audio are same settings as .avi files that DO import (and were not converted by QT).
Performing a conversion to WMV9 format on my Mac QT Pro 7 imports fine into Windows powerpoint. There is not a WMV export option on the Windows QT pro.
I'd prefer to have WMV export but would settle for .avi it it would import and play as I need it to.
The converted .avi file plays fine in Windows Media Player under XP. Just not in Powerpoint.
Office and XP updates are very recent, within 2 months for sure.
    Thanks for help.

  • FCP 4 xml export

I tried to get help on a blog but my last question wasn't answered.
    This is the thread:
I’m trying to export an XML file from FCP 4 to Premiere CS5. After I name the file and save it to my external hard drive, I am only able to get about 50% of the way through the export process before FCP quits and asks if I want to send a report.
I read on a blog that the file can be exported, but only with Apple XML Interchange Format version 4 (or better); my only option is Version 1.
How can I export this file, since it fails to work with version 1?
    Reply:
XML was in infancy when FCP4 was released so it is not surprising that it isn't working. Plus you will need to see if you can open it in a more recent version of FCP before re-exporting in the correct XML format.
EDL is probably the only way you will be able to move this project. What is the codec of your media? Or are you planning on recapture in CS5?
I wanted to open the timeline in Premiere to do more editing.
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Most Quality
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Reply:
Best bet is to get the old FCP project to open in Final Cut 7 and then it should open directly into CS5.5. There is no surety that a FCP4 project can be opened by FCP7 however. Apple are terrible at backwards and forwards compatibility.
What you are trying to do can only be done via EDl as far as I know and then relink media if it is in a format that CS5 can read.
So do I have to purchase FCP 7 in order to import the timeline into Premiere?
My last question wasn't answered. So do I have to have FCP 7 in order to get my timeline into Premiere?

Or find someone who has it and will do it for you. Yes, you need v6 or 7.
This is the Final Cut Pro X forum BTW.

  • Exporting from FCP to WMV gives "unrendered" format.

Why when exporting from FCP7 to WMV format, even after rendering the whole sequence, the final file shows "unrendered" when there is text by it self?
I have Flip4Mac pro installed so I am able to render the whole sequence, and even though the playback on the timeline doesn't show any unrendered media, the final .wmv file shows the unrendered screen whenever there is text on a black background between segments of the video.
Any idea? Thank you in advance for any future answer!

Thank you for the reply David. I ended up exporting the movie to Quicktime. Then I used a second software to convert it to WMV. I did this before I saw your reply though.
Amazingly, the first time I did the export it came out great. After I had to make a change and remove a super imposed image a flickering started to happen during the playback of the video media on the timeline and exported file. I am not reconnecting the media again and rendering everything and apparently so far the flickering is going away.
After is done I'll give a try the Compressor and see what's the result.
    Thank you again.

  • Movie gets truncated when exporting to a different format

I have just upgraded to Quicktime Pro to allow me to convert formats. Trying to export a 40 second .mov or .m4v file to a .wmv format, the resulting .wmv file gets truncated after about 30 seconds. This is happening to all other similarly structured file conversions.
Any advise or answer is appreciated!

Pay the people at http://flip4mac.com for one of the upgrades to their product you're using to exit the "trial mode" version.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't create WMP formats without that third party software help.

  • Mac, wmv export from Premiere or MediaEncoder

    Hi,
    I use a mac
and worked with FCP and flip4mac.
How can I export wmv files from Premiere CC or Media Encoder ?
    br
    phil

Very strange that they want it in the Quicktime container. The only thing I can think of that you might be able to do is to use the MXF option in Premiere, then from there use FFMBC to rewrap the files into the Quicktime container. I know for the hyperdeck studio I used to be able to take the .mxf (DnxHD) files and wrap them into the .mov container ysubg ffmbc. According to their site it can do what you want it to do so I think it's worth a shot. If you're not sure about working with a CMD prompt though you might want to download a GUI that works with ffmpeg since if it works with ffmpeg it will work with ffmbc.  It says right on the front page it can do the task you need so I'd at least try it.
    http://code.google.com/p/ffmbc/
Also here is a link to the page where they show you the command line for encoding to xdcam 422 in the .mov container. If you do it this way you could export to a uncompressed or another lossless format and then use ffmbc to encode it to xdcam in the Quicktime container if you wanted.

  • Serious XML problem, audio is truncated on export

I edited a video in FCPX, then I exported the XML, graded in DaVinci Resolve 8.2 then I imported the new XML back into FCPX.
in the new project created from the new XML, I had to add a music soundtrack.
the BIG problem is that when you export the new movie, the audio track is truncated.
I discovered that it's specifically truncated where the original XML duration was ending.
example: in my case the original sequence ended at 2:05, and so it was graded in Resolve and ending also at 2:05 – when I imported the new XML into FCPX, I added some titles and audio track, increasing the duration of the sequence to 2:20.
it turns out that for some reason, the audio is truncated exactly at 2:05 even if you can see it and hear it correctly on the timeline – the problem is only on the exported movie.
note that the exported video isn't truncated, only the audio.
    anyone had the same problem?
it would be interesting to nail it down to an FCP XML bug or maybe a Resolve XML export bug.
I will file a bug report both to Apple and Blackmagic.

Just an offhand guess here. Try wrapping everything as a compound clip for final export -- see if that keeps all your audio at the end. That should force an update to the fcpxml (length). I have noticed some bizarre behaviors in fcpxml*, so what might have happened is the new audio you added was attached to a "subclip" (a clip within another clip) which would be "trimmed" by the parent. If the editing applications (including FCPX) did not update the length of the parent after the addition of the extra material... you get the gist.
I've always had the impression that apps like Resolve (and Color) should be the *absolute* final step before export/finalizing a project. The use of these apps are not part of a "back-and-forth" workflow between apps. If you can get back to a stage in your project before Resolve, try adding all your last minute content again before going back into Resolve.
*I've had one fcpxml file generated where *every* title I added over the entire storyline was added to every clip in the xml, even though no more than two titles were ever attached to any single clip... go figure; very corrupted and nothing I do to the project will fix the xml output. Fcpxml is a headache to try and deal with and the documentation *****. For instance, all times are divisions of integers. If a project or clip has a 29.97 frame rate, you do all the math at 29.97 then at the end, multiply the fractional part by 30... or you won't get a frame accurate result ----- I THINK because... IT'S NOT IN THE DOCUMENTATION. But so far that's the way it seems to work. At any rate, if Blackmagic or anybody else has problems dealing with fcpxml... I can certainly understand why. It's probably better to export video for each step and skip the fcpxml BS for awhile until everybody gets it straightened out. [If anyone reading this knows the ins/outs of fcpxml - I would like to start a conversation with you because I'd like to write some online "apps" that take the fcpxml as input - starting with finishing my project that generates chapter markers (for QT and or Compressor).]

  • WMV export image quality

    Hi,
I've been working on a project in FCP which is a demonstration of some website functionality. I need to convert my finished product to a wmv.I have managed to do this using Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD but so far the quality (definition of the image) on the wmv is disappointing to say the least compared to my H264 QT file. Can anyone comment on whether this is this just a limitation of the wmv format or can you recommend some optimum settings for me to use in flip4mac?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I unfortunately have to export WMV files regularly and have never been quite satisfied with the results. Initially I used my partner's copy of Sorenson Squeeze to create the WMV files, but it was too disruptive to use his system, so I started using Flip4Mac on mine. I could never get the file sizes down to what I could with Sorenson without sacrificing the quality. Last week I installed Boot Camp and Windows XP on my machine so I could encode using some Windows applications. Using Windows Media Encoder (free from MS), I was able to get great results.
The program truly makes you appreciate Compressor's bulky new UI, but the results are good and the software is free.
Sorry I don't have any specifics for you. How will the file be used? Is it going to be streamed or does it just need to look pretty for demo-ing?
Whenever I'm working in Compressor with a format that's not as familiar to me, I export a bunch of different clips and take notes on the different settings so I can keep tweaking. Trial and error.
    Good luck.
