FCP v FCE

I have a mate asking me what the differences are between FCP and FCE....the price is dramatic but I couldn't tell him what exactly is different. He wants to begin editing small projects for use on the net, so nothing major. I said FCE would be fine for that, am I missing anything...?
Cheers

When I purchased my first Seagate hard drive I paid $1500 for less than 2 Gig. That doesn't give them the right to force me to buy 4 TB disc array with a new ESATA PCI card.
In a free market prices and product are constantly changing based on competition and market forces. People should have the right to choose the best product for the best price.
And in all fairness, in my original post I did acknowledge what an astonishing value the FCS suite is for those who actually NEED it.
Right now I just want to install FCP on my MBP. Since my version of FCP is from FCS-1 that's not possible. And if I want to simply upgrade FCP from 5.x to 6.x it's going to cost me $500. I need ProRes and other features in FCP so FCE is not an option.

Ken - Your analogy is way off target. FCS is not one product. A better analogy would have been the purchase of a living room set and being forced to by lamps, paintings and chairs that you don't need.

I don't want Premiere and Encore. I've been a FCP user since it was first offered by Apple. I just want to be able to install the software that I paid for onto my laptop without being forced to pay another $500.
And I have nothing against capitalism as long as it's done under the context of a FREE market with fair competition. Frankly I'm astonished that Adobe even bothers to write code for macs at all any more.

Hi Jerry - I agree with you 100%. And I am looking forward to exploring and upgrading each of the applications when and if I need them. Right now I just want to install FCP onto my MBP.
...Then of course there's STP... you must be kidding me that you don't need it...
That's a perfect example of my situation. I am an audio / music professional first. My investment in audio applications and hardware completely eclipses my investment in FCS. And I will run circles around anyone using STP with my applications of choice.
...When Apple did sell the apps separately, everyone just bought the bundle because it was a bargain. It still is...
As I said i my original post, I agree that the bundle price is astonishing. But I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that topic. If everyone was purchasing the bundle then Apple would not have made it a mandatory purchase for FCP users and eliminated the option for customers to choose the applications which applied to their individual needs.
Thanks for your civilized and thoughtful reply to my post.

"...At least the OP got an answer to their question..."
Actually no. The OP was trying understand why FCP was so much more expensive than FCE. He asked: "...the price is dramatic but I couldn't tell him what exactly is different..."
He got a link to a long thread on another user forum which eventually had a post that explained the other apps and how they were bundled. Apple does not provide a side by side comparison and the OP is not the only person struggling with finding this information.
I answered his question directly on this forum. My advice was relevant.
Randy Holder wrote:
"...So, they give you more than you need and they are ripping you off..."
No, I NEVER said that FCS was a Rip-Off.
What I was suggesting was that they are giving me more than I need and making me pay more than I would like. And, using the difference to subsidize the cost of other expensive applications.
As I've said over & over. I think FCS is an AMAZING value for 1200 bucks. But I own FCS-1, bought and paid for, and all I want is a UB version of FCP 5.x to install on my laptop or a reasonable upgrade path to FCP6.
If I could pay the equivalent of what they are charging for FCE and get an upgrade to FC6 there would be no need for this discussion. But Apple has not provided a path for such an upgrade at a reasonable price.
Offer the FCS suit for $1200 GREAT. But still offer the other products a-la-carte at prices which when combined would exceed the price of the Suite. And more importantly let people who purchase FCS at least UPGRADE apps individually!
Let the market forces take over and see what happens.

  • Are FCP and FCE user interfaces the same?

I was recently talking to a pro videographer and complaining that I miss the old iMovie, it was so easy and intutive to use, Final Cut Express confuses me, etc. He said that I should try Final Cut Pro because the user interface is better than FCE. Is this true? I thought that FCP and FCE have the same user interface?
I just edit HDV videos for my business or personal videos. I don't do anything "pro." I just want a video editor that's easy, intuitive, and fast to use. I don't edit videos often so I don't want to spend an hour reading the manual every time I edit a 3-minute video, i.e., use FCE. iMovie drives me up the wall.

  • Upgrade to FCP from FCE

Can anyone give me an idea of the learning curve when upgrading from FCE to FCP. It looks as the the programs are quite similar on the surface but I have never seen this question directly answered. I am also somewhat intimidated by Compressor, DVD Studio Pro ect since I currently output to iDVD.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I upgraded from FCE to FCP last year. I used FCE for 5 years. I am not a professional but I do a fair amount of multicamera work for local ballet companies. I record and create the DVDs for their performances and individual dancers. I do it for fun and to help out the dancers.
I upgraded to FCP in order to obtain the multicamera feature in FCP. It has been worth it to me. There was very little difference in the learning curve in most aspects of logging, editing, compositing, etc. There are a ton of professional equiptment oriented input and output features that only professionals would need in FCP. I don't understand most of them but I don't need them either.
I use iDVD and not the DVD studio professional app because iDVD is so easy and the final DVDs are so beautiful. Someday I will learn DVD pro when I have some time.
Compressor has been handy, though. Sometimes a ballet will last longer than 2 hours.
Also, I bought a book about FCP which really helped.
So, I would say that you should upgrade to FCP from FCE if there are certain features that you need in FCP or the FC Studio bundle. Or if you have the cash and just want to have the top of the line program go for it. Otherwise I would stick with FCE because is is 98% of FCP and such an unbelievable software deal.

  • Fcp 5 - fce file exchange

Is it possible to swap files between fcp and fce? It would be nice if the basic edtiting could be done with fce (on another computer) and them for final make-up transfered to fcp. Does that work? And how vice versa. Anyone has experience?
    Thanks

If FCE can open and read XML files, you may have a chance. Export an XML of the FCP 5 project, then use that file to build a new project in FCE (IF FCE is compatible). Since I don't use or own FCE, I couldn't say.
That's the workflow for opening FCP 5 project files in FCP 4

  • FCP to FCE(express)

I have a movie done in FCP sitting on an IMAC computer. I am making a new movie using FC Express on a laptop. I want to take some of my clips from the FCP computer and incorporate them into the FCE new movie. I get error messages that seem to indicate that this is not possible. Can anyone provide help?
Also, I do have the FCP movie that I referenced above, burned to DVD thru iDVD. Is it possible to take footage from there to incorporate into my new video in FCE? Can anyone recommend a program that will let me do this?

depending on your version of FCE you should be able to use a dv quicktime movie if the final cut movie can be exported that way.
mpeg streamclip should be able to demux the dvd to quicktime. google mpeg streamclip and download the version compatible for your machine

  • What are the main differences in features between FCP and FCE?

I'm buying filmmaking equipment for my teenage son, who has shown himself to be serious about getting started making shorts. One big decision (regarding costs and $$$ allocation for other system elements such as the computer and camcorder)is whether to get Final Cut Pro (studio version) or Final Cut Express. He has used Final Cut in several camps and film school programs. Feedback will be most appreciated!

FCP can't be bought by itself, however Final Cut Studio includes Color, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro.... FCE will not edit any format except DV and HDV. FCP will edit most every format. FCP is keyframeable, where FCE really isn't. There really is a ton of difference between the two apps. FCE has no media management, has fewer effects, etc... One's an enthusiasts' program and the other (Final Cut Studio) is a full professional suite of software... it's certainly worth the difference, but might be more than you want to spend. FCE is a subset of code taken from FCP, so learning it will help with learning FCP... the interface is nearly identical.

  • Camcorders/Video Cameras recommendationsfpr FCP or FCE

I wish to buy my daughter a Camcorder/Video Camera suitable for use with Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Express. She is doing Film Studies A level at the present, and her school uses FC Express. The Uni she wants to do Film Studies at, uses FC Pro. She is also keen to have something that takes stills, is HD and uses SD cards. We are looking to spend between £100-250 (approx $140-300 ish). Any suggestions... I have been poring over lots of Amazon entries, spoken to Apple, and also combed through the forums - and I hav'nt found anything yet I'm confident is the correct choice. Please can all you experienced FCE and FCP Gurus out thier give us some advice - Cheers !!

Well, on a Mac that's running 10.5.2 and probably QuickTime 7.4.5 or later, I would lean toward FCE 4 for stability into the future. I'd remove all vestiges of FCE 3.5 from the machine and then install FCE4. (ps You don't have to remove SoundTrack if you are using it and want to keep it). And you only need to purchase the FCE4 upgrade; you will enter both the v3.5 and v4 serial numbers when you install FCE4.
The basic editing capabilities are the same and FCE 4 added support for AVCHD on Intel Macs plus some FXPlug filters.
As for FCP, if your target is YouTube videos, I can't imagine what you would need FCP for.

  • Currently have FCE 3.5--cost and benefit of upgrading to FCP, or FCE 4?

    Hi
I'm getting ready to do some video production in earnest (youtube music videos mostly, some sketch comedy as well perhaps) and am wondering if upgrading to 4 is worthwhile, or even going to FCP.
I've got some footage already and am considering buying a Sony SR12 for further shooting...
    Thanks!

  • XML from FCP to FCE

Hi! I have FCP 7.0.3, and my friend has FCE 4.0.1. We're trying to work collectively, (He's doing the rough cut of our movie, then we're start interfacing between the two programs once we're working on the final cut) but I have a problem. I can open FCE files in FCP, but he can't open FCP project files in FCE, as I had expected. So the work around that I have found, through lots of internet searching, is that I can export XML files, and then he can import them into FCE, and then he'd have the exported sequence. But when I try it, he gets error messages. The only things I can think of is that I have the footage imported as Apple ProRes, and FCE doesn't recognize that kind of codec. Also, I don't know what version I should export the XML as (1 through 5). Help!
    Thanks!
    Paul

Here's one reply to a thread that is somewhat on this topic, from Creative Cow.
Re: Final Cut Express compatibility with FCP
by Mark Thurstlic on Mar 23, 2011 at 1:44:24 pm
    Hi there
I had a similar issue with bring FCP files back into FCE. After fiddling around a bit I found that the solution lies in Exporting an XML file from FCP. What you need to do is, while in FCP click on FILE--EXPORT--XML
Then from the format pull down, select the version # that is compatible with your version of FCE. I found the "Apple XML Interchange Format, version 4" works with FCE v4.0.1. Then in FCE Import the XML file by FILE--IMPORT--FCP XML From Imovie.
An issue worth noting is that FCP seems to only export individual sequences at a time not entire projects. So if you have more then one sequence in a project that you would like to import into FCE you'll have to export them as XMLs one at a time.
    Hope this helps

  • FCP vs FCE

I want to start editing in a real rich program and leave imovie apart.
Is it better i go directly to FCP or is it better i start with FCE and stay for some time before more jumpong to FCP?
Is FCE just a limited version of FCP or is it better to start with?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The main reason why you would choose FCE is to save a considerable amount of money but there will be many limitations ([read this|http://www.princeton.edu/~newmedia/fcpvfce.shtml]).
If you are serious about editing or plan to make a leaving out of editing in the feature then FCP is a great investment and you will learn to use great features, tools and Plugins as well as work with virtually all HD flavours (HD will make DV obsolete in the near future).
Oh. I don't know if I could live without 3 Way Color Corrector!

  • Slow render speed:  Mac Pro vs. Mac Mini (FCP Vs. FCE)

About a year ago I purchased a Mac mini (2gb ram, 2.0 dual core processor running OS 10.4) and using Final Cut Express. Understandable, rending and exporting took awhile.
A week ago I upgraded to a Mac Pro (10gb ram, 2.8 8-core processors running OS 10.5) and Final Cut Pro Studio 6. I assumed that I would see a rather dramatic decrease in in the time it takes to render (and to export).
However, the I am seeing virtually no difference whatsoever in rendering speed between the Mac mini running FCE and the Mac Pro running FCP. I'm very disappointed.
What gives? I'm editing virtually the same material and it's just as slow as before.
Any ideas anyone on what may be causing this?

I am generally using SD video imported (log and transfer) directly from the hard drive of a Sony HDR-SR12 camera, although I also use captured video from a Panasonic HVX200 camera. My "Easy Setup" setting has been DV-NTSC for both Final Cut Express and now Final Cut Studio.
The rendering that I'm talking about, for example, is when I put an effect on a video track that requires rendering before I can play it.
I'm then typically exporting the finished video to a Quick Time movie DV-NTSC setting.
Again, there is no improvement at all in the time it takes to render and export using the Mac PRO vs. the Mac mini using identical settings. I would think there should be a significant improvement.

  • Changing to FCP from FCE

I have used FCE for 2 years and for various reasons have just purchased the FCP Studio bundle. I have had a problem with FCE not printing to video and some problems with producing DVDs with iDVD--not picking up Chapter markers and DVDs not playable on many players. I hope that with this upgrade some or all of these problems will be eliminated.
Due to the problems with FCE I would like to remove it all before installing FCP. What is the best way to do this?
---but, I have a current project in FCE that I would like to transfer to FCP. What would be the best way to do this?

I recently upgraded from FCE to FCP as well and I used this article to remove FCE.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
I'm not sure about your project... you may want to keep the Final Cut Express Documents and not delete those since your project file is most likley there...

Best for me includes excellent low light functions and excellent glass. I need neither digital zoom nor auto gain.
Decide on an acquisition format by determining what you expect to do with the movies you create. You may not need full 1080 but can get by with 720. Resist cameras that record in a codec that must be transcoded before editing.

Just a quick question. Is there a difference in rendering speeds between Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express (given the underlying hardware is the same)?

Only way is to test, but it is the same underlying program - or so claim the FCE users.
