FCP vs Vegas 8 Pro in regards to workflow efficiency

Hello,
I have projects that have to be completed and presented a few hours after I have videotaped an event or scene etc... I would like to use FCP to complete these projects. However, FCP seems to require an inordinate amount of rendering even if the project is simple and uses only a few video tracks. Some editors prefer Vegas 8 Pro to complete their projects because the WORKFLOW is superior to FCP. Is this true? How does the FCP workflow compare to the workflow of Vegas and other non-linear apps and what is the best way to use FCP so that the WORKFLOW is great?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jordan

All NLEs have their strenghts and weaknesses. Vegas' strength is that it can edit most every format you toss at it in real time. So if you have the need to edit AVCHD natively, and MPEG...then use Vegas. FCP does not edit those formats natively. That is a weakness of FCP.
However, FCP can capture and work with DV footage...HDV footage, DVCPRO HD footage. With the aid of a capture card it can capture and edit uncompressed SD and HD footage. Capture DVCPRO HD and output HDCAM and digibeta. Can Vegas do that? FCP can convert footage shot with a Viper as DVCPRO HD for an offline edit, then match to a DPX sequence for eventual online of a feature film (Zodiak). This is one of its strengths. Can Vegas do any of this?
Not to get into a ******* match here...I'm just reiterating what David said. These are tools...tools that are meant to used in different situations. In your current workflow, FCP won't work. Heck, even the king of NLE's, the almighty AVID wouldn't fare well in that situation. It wasn't designed to...neither was FCP. But Adobe Premiere would work...as does Vegas. Use the tool that best works for the workflow you need. FCP isn't it. Vegas is. Since you have both NLEs on your computer, and are running Mac and Microsoft OSs...there probably isn't many workflows that you couldn't tackle.

  • FCP Vs. Vegas Pro

I am a Sony Vegas user, and I am contemplating the purchase of a Mac and FCP studio, I hav'nt had much exposure to macs or FCP but I have been looking for a couple of years. My Quad core PC is geting ready to be replaced so the MAC question is poping up again.
I have used Vegas for 3 years now and am quite comfortable with it but am by no means unwilling to learn a new NLE. Can I get some input on the curve I will have and / or the strength of FCP over Vegas other than "the industry uses it More" I already know that.
One of my goals is to make shorts for a local public access station and also make documentary movies.
    Thanks in advance..
Paul B (future Mac owner perhaps)

I use FCP, Vegas and am just dabbling with Premiere. The only reason to switch to FCP is to be able to talk FCP in an FCP world. If you're looking for an editorial gig at a show factory, gotta know FCP. Vegas is certainly up to FCP's standards technically speaking. The workflow is MUCH different - you can actually do detailed sound work in Vegas. I use FCP for compatibility with the rest of the world, but when I need to jam something out really fast, I move over to Vegas. The other thing Vegas has going for it is its ability to launch multiple instances of the app, on the same machine, at the same time. Processor allocation is slick on a multicore machine, and I have to say it's pretty mind blowing have multiple instances running different shows & different tasks at the same time. A few year ago, ABC news moved to Vegas, not sure if they're still there. Great integration with Sony's XDCAM gear.

  • FCP to Avid Express HD 5.0 Workflow

I am about to start on the edit of a new project.
My editor uses Avid Express HD 5.0 and I use FCP Pro latest version.
The source is HDV. It is a five camera synchronised shoot of a rock concert.
I would normally use multiclip in FCP to line everything up and take it from there.
Is it best to let an assistant do the line up in Avid rather than FCP ?
Once the project is edited in Avid I want to do sub edits/captions/titles and prep for DVD in Final Cut Studio so what's the best way of taking the project back ?
Can the tapes be captured once and then files reused etc. etc.
    Any tips or advice welcome.

    Hi there,
as an avid & fcp editor I would suggest the following workflow. I am assuming you are the director/producer possibly online editor since you said "my editor uses avid xpress pro hd".
If he is more comfortable using avid for this then let him. He will be far more productive on a system he knows and trusts, and lets face it Avid do know what they are doing, they have been in the broadcast market for years now so they can be trusted!
.digitise the project into avid in HDV native
.let him cut the project as he/you see fit and take it to picture lock.
.when it is locked play it out to tape (in HDV mode on the avid)
.digitise that tape into your FCP finishing suite, overlaying the edl export from avid onto a seperate video layer so you can see where the cuts are(or use automatic duck) and finsh the project there.
but please DO NOT go back and re digitise your tapes. HDV is appalling at giving any kind of sensible t/code output that you can replicate in a conform or re-digitise situation IMO (check the forums) so stay inside your NLE and squirt it out native!
    best of luck!

  • How does Sony Vegas Pro 12 compare to Premiere Pro CS6?

About 2 months ago, I purchased Premiere Pro CS6 retail box version from Best Buy.  With everything going to the CC, I can't get upgrades unless I join the CC.  This is NOT something I want to do!  I would like to know if the chroma keying and image stabilization in Sony Vegas pro 12 are just as good or similar to Premiere Pro? I already read about how to transfer the product license on the Adobe website.  If I decide to make the switch, I will list my Premiere Pro on Ebay. Another reason why I may want to get Vegas Pro is because I found out about the AVCHD bug in Premiere AFTER I purchased it.  It has been over a year and Adobe has still not fixed the bug. I have a feeling they will never fix the bug because of the new CC vesion.  I am currently about half way through the classroom in a book from Adobe and have not yet edited any of my own videos.  My video camera is a Canon Vixia HF S20 and my computer is a new Dell XPS 8500 with Core i7 and 12 GB of ram. Just a bit frustrated on what to do.  If I can't sell my Premiere Pro for a good enough price, I will keep it and switch to Vegas or some other program after it becomes obsolete.

You can download a fully functional demo of Sony Vegas 12 Pro.  That's what I did.  So far I like it and will be making the switch to Sony Vegas 12 Pro.
They also have Suite version which include HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  This program is like After Effects.  I haven't started playing with that yet.
Also, there is Movie Studio 12 Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2.  That's a mouth full.  Anyhow, it is based on Sony Vegas 12 and it comes with HitFilm 2 Express.  The Express version is a stripped down version of HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  The Express version is still a great program for adding effects.  For some people Movie Studio 12 is all they will need,
Both version, Vegas and Movie Studio, have GPU acceleration which is really nice.
I also just picked up Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate.  It sells for $69.95 and it can open and save .PSD files.  So I don't have to worry about all of the .PSD files I saved in Photoshop
Right now I have CS5 and CS6.  Premiere CS6 has a lot of bug, the AVCHD spanning clips, slow motion that jitters, caching problem, slower exports, etc.

I have a question about SVP9. (Sony Vegas Pro 9)What are literal "commands" (shortcut key by default is "C") for Sony Vegas?I have no Idea what they do, but when i search the question, I get things about the other kind of command. (ex. Split.)

Here's a good resource - this link leads to december 2010 in a 25 pages long topic - the topic started in 2005. So for the older entries you should check if there are modern (64 bit) versions.

  • Vegas Pro and Quicktime on XP

    Hi, Y'all--
This is really not a question, except to ask why nobody seems to answer any of the questions in this area.
I actually had a question and had to find my own answer. Hope what I discovered helps someone and saves a few hours of your life....
I recently started working with Vegas Pro (an outstanding video editor for the PC, BTW). I have two cameras that record in the Apple .MOV codec. Vegas recognized, displayed, loaded, and rendered them into .AVI files-- no problems. Then, I made The Mistake: I downloaded the new Quicktime version that Apple had been annoying me about for months. As a result, Vegas would only display .MOV files as black. I had Windows XP go back to its state before the download using System Restore. No joy. Vegas still displayed only black .MOV files and now Quicktime didn't work at all. So, back to the Original Configuration-- Quicktime still didn't work, and neither, of course, did Vegas with .MOV's. I removed QT and downloaded another copy from Apple, then removed and re-installed Vegas. Nope; all is still black.
Then I remembered that I had a CD-ROM with an older version of QT bundled on it. Replaced the new version with it: Nope-- it was TOO old; Apple told me to go and install the latest version. Right.
This time on the Apple QuickTime download page, I found a small-fonted, light-blue link to "Previous Versions of Quicktime" about halfway down on the left.
Go thou and click on it!! On the "Previous Versions" page that comes up, there will be a Version 7.6 for Windows (dated Jan 21, 2009). Remove whatever QT version is on your machine and download this one; it's the solution! Vegas will recognize your .MOV files (again)!
Now: Repent of your desire to upgrade Quicktime. It's the road to ****.

Apologies to all: I should have mentioned my version of Vegas Pro. Users of Vegas Pro 9 or 10 probably don't even have the problem. I use 8.0b (Sony wants 'way too many hundreds of dollars for an upgrade). When I asked them for help on this issue via email, the autoresponse was "You have Legacy software and are not entitled to help". My post is for others like me with an abandoned program that's only three years old.

  • Premiere equivalent to Vegas Pro 'regions'?

I just started using the Premiere CS5 trial and was wondering, what is the Premiere equivalent of Vegas Pro's 'regions'? Basically, in Vegas Pro I'll make a bunch of clips on one project file and mark each clip as a region. Then I name reach region to what I want to final file name to be. Finally I batch render all the regions in all the video formats I want, and Vegas will spit out all the versions of all the videos all properly named in a directory. So far I can't figure out how do that in Premiere though! Anyone know how?

Ok, well thanks for all the help! I tried multiple sequences and I think that will do ok for what I need. Having to send them all one by one to render is a bummer, but I'll feature request it.
I agree. I will join you in a feature request.
    1) For temporary files I set Premiere to use another directory on another drive as I don't want those types of file poluting my main work drive. However it's still creating some new directories/files amongst all my footage, such as "Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save" directory and "Encoded Files" directory. Is there any way to have it not do that? I archive all my content on blu-ray, hdd, etc, which I keep at a bank vault and I need to not have those types of temporary work directories amongst those files.
No, you can't turn those off; you can turn off the Auto Save feature in preferences, but I don't know if that prevents the folder from being created or not. The Auto Save folder are project backups, so they're pretty small, and only so many are created as you specify in the preferences. The Encoded Files folder is--I guess--supposed to be where you send exports. Nothing will go there unless you specify it to go there, or put it there manually. It's slightly annoying, but I wouldn't worry about it. I've meaning to file a feature request to eliminate this automatic folder... now is the time I guess.
    2) Do you know how many installs Premiere allows on one product key? Vegas allows 3, so I have it on my work pc and my work laptop. I was wondering if the same was possible with Premiere. It would be even better if I could also have Premiere on my mac laptop with the same product key, that would be ideal.
You get two concurrent activations; terms of use dictates that you're not supposed to use them simultaneously, but the kind of arrangement you're describing is (I believe) within your usage rights.
    3) I notice initially the preview video footage looks a bit rough even though I have full resolution selected, but if I select "playback resolution -> full" again then it fixes and looks good. Seems like I have to do that once every time I load a project. Just a bug I presume?
Sometimes this happens to me, sometimes not. It could be a graphics driver issue (put I'm on a PC with a completely different OS and GPU), but I have no idea... so yeah... bug report
    4) I'm getting no audio on my footage in Premiere. Is this maybe just a limit on the trial app I suppose? There are two audio tracks in all my footage, a 5.1 track and a regular stereo track, but neither one appears.
Possibly. Depends what your source footage is. Check here: Limitations of the Premiere Pro CS5 and CS4 trial versions

I'm going to buy the HDR-CX700V camcorder. It can record the 1080/60p format. However there is no such a format among the Vegas Pro 10 templates. Does this mean I can't edit the 1080/60p footage by Vegas Pro 10 ?

  • FCP and Soundtrack Pro music licensing and music cue sheet procedures

Okay, so we made the movie, and we marketed it and it has been sold in several geographic territories. Now I have to make up a music cue sheet. What do I put on the cue sheet for Apple Loops and FCP and Soundtrack Pro files that I have used for music? I believe they are royalty free, which is great. But I'm supposed to identify the music cues with writer, publisher, and society (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) What does an entry for those resources look like? It's really hard to find this info in the documentation for FCP and SP. Thanks.
    G5 Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Interesting question - We don't use attorneys - too expensive, and we never listen to 'em anyway, so the info didn't come from a lawyer, ha ha. But I've seen several examples of music cue sheets, and they all contain the same information, including composer, publisher, society, timing, etc. (After all, that's the purpose of the cue sheet - to see that the artists and producers get paid for their work). You can find one format at:
    www.ascap.com/musicbiz/cuesheetcorner/pdf/SampleCue
Of course, if the example comes from ASCAP (as that one does) or another society (BMI, others), they are working to make their job easier, but they are the societies - they are the ones who can object if they don't like it. And they have substantial power to penalize a producer for not doing what they want. But here's the thing: there's huge tradition in Hollywood, and the rule is (and the contracts say) that if you don't provide everything on the distributor's list of deliverables, they hold your money until you do - and one of the things on the list of deliverables is a music cue sheet, and every example I've ever seen (and I've seen at least 20) asks for the same information. So that's the answer as to "who told you that?" Is is possible that I'm being led down the garden path by ASCAP and the movie industry in general? Sure, but every source I consult agrees that this is the reality. I wish I could avoid it, but as I understand the situation, I have to do it, and it has to contain the info, or we'll never see our dough, ha ha. But my question remains the same - how do I get that info for the "royalty-free" music library attached to FCP?

  • Upgrading my FCP X Mac Pro

Upgrading my FCP X Mac Pro
by Michael Holmes on Jul 24, 2012 at 11:18:08 pm
I shoot videos of local bands as a hobby. I have been mixing/mastering songs for these bands for 15 years, so this is a natural extension.
I would like to upgrade my 2010 Mac Pro 2x2.4 Quad Core. This computer is only for (1) FCP X and (2) Pro Tools HD Native. Currently my system works well on single cam editing as long as I don’t use a 3rd party plug-in…………then it drops frames big time. I am about to start using two FS100 camcorders, and I am worried that the Mac Pro won’t handle dual cam editing very well. I edit 100% in ProRes.
Are the following decisions good ones?
    (1)     A Crucial M4 256 SSD for OS/Apps. I plan to buy, this seems like an obvious upgrade. I only have 75GB on the OS/Apps HD, so 256 should be sufficient.
    (2)     A RAID card. I don’t plan to buy this. I am not even using software RAID. Only one of the other three 2TB Hitachi 7200RPM SATA II drives is dedicated to video files; the other two handle Pro Tools files, and backup duties. I don’t currently have room for a RAID card, since the four PCIe slots are/will be used:
    (a)     ATI Radeon 5770
    (b)     Pro Tools HD Native
    (c)     Card for external monitor (maybe)
    (d)     Card for LTO 6 tape storage (planned, as soon as LTO 6 is available).
    (3)     An upgrade of the ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card.  I don’t plan to buy this. I haven’t seen anybody saying this will give me substantial FCP X performance improvement.
    (4) Increase memory. I will do this if it will help. I have 16GB, and I can go up to 32GB.
    (5)     An Eizo ColorEdge CG275W LCD Monitor. I don’t know what to do on this. I am currently using an HP 2711x monitor that I calibrate with a Spyder4PRO. I deliver H.264 QuickTime movies that are viewed on computer monitors. Probably 30% are uploaded to the Internet. Often the QT movies are given to club owners when bands try to get bookings.
However, I will probably start to deliver HD video DVD’s soon, especially for the club owners. These will be better quality and increase the odds that the club owners will actually view them. So, right now the product is viewed 100% on computer monitors, but later this year it will start to be viewed on televisions.
BTW, I have no idea what card to buy for this monitor, if I get it.
    Are these the right decisions?
Note that I am doing very little to address the “dropping frames” issue, which is the biggie. Am I overlooking something obvious?
    Thanks!

What about just getting two SSD's for the drive bays:
    (1) One 256GB SSD for OS/Apps
    (2) One 512GB SSD for Event/Project folders.
512GB would be tight on some shoots, but I could even go to a Mercury Electra 960GB SSD.
Yes, very pricey storage, but if this would solve data transfer problems, it would be worth it.
If I only need one video card, I can use a PCIe slot for an external SATA drive unit (4 bays) I already have to handle all backup storage. So, the loss of the two HD bays to SSD would not be a big issue. HD bays are less dear than PCIe slots.

  • HDV outout from FCP to Vegas 7

I'm having trouble outputting a file from FCP that Vegas 7 can open and play. My FCP sequence is HDV1080i60.
I tried a number of different things. Either Vegas doesnt recogize it, or it looks horribly compressed.
It is important that it look nearly as good as the "QT self-contained" movie.
    Thanks
    Steven

    So any other thoughts??
I think Wes' way is right......but maybe there's something more direcct?
    Thanks

  • Used Lenovo H530 for Adobe PP/AE and Sony Vegas Pro 13.0

I have a very limited budget, about $400. I have been limping along with a Quad Core Pentium, so just about anything is an upgrade. Has anybody used a Lenovo H530 for Adobe PP/AE and/or Sony Vegas Pro 13? There are a number of them for sale on eBay more times than not for about $400 +/-. I know I will need a good CUDA card to really see decent performance. But for now I would love a system that makes editing a lot less painful and can handle the graphic card upgrade at some point. Any AE users on the H530? Any recos for other used systems around the $400 point?
    Thanks,

......you'd be better off looking for a used i7 gaming laptop which would have an NVidia GPU in it....you CAN find 17.3 inch screen models, ( 1920x1080) with decent external poets and 2 internal HDD bays. However, you would probably STILL need to upgrade memory and put in SSDs.
