FCP & VTR error messages

I have been installing several FCP 5.1 on new MacPro Intel G5's since last December. And I have been getting reports from the editors who operate these systems that they are getting error reports from FCP about the VTR. We have tried many different approaches to solve the problem, but to no avail. Part of the problem is that it is intermittent. What we are using are brand new MacPro Intel G5's with with 8GB RAM. Besides the internal OS drive, there is another internal 500GB drive for FCP media. The MacPro is at 10.4.8. FCP is at version 5.1.4. We are using Blackmagics MultiBridge Pro as the video/audio interface. That is at version 5.9.2 which is current. This uses the Decklink machine control software which is also 5.9.2. We connect machine control via a 9 pin RS-422 cable. The video is connect via the SDI port on the MultiBridge and the SDI on the VTR. We are using the 8 bit uncompressed setting. The throughput on the hard drive is more than adequate. Audio is analog. The tapedecks are Panasonic DVC Pro. We are using the Panasonic RS-422 protocol setup in FCP Device Control Setup. What the editors are reporting is that while digitizing they will get this error message on the screen and FCP stops digitizing. The first error message reads as follows "Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first." They will then click the OK button and this error message will appear twice again. After the third time they get this message. "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully" They click on OK and the error message disappears and that is it. The VTR is still running and is not at the end of tape. The editors rewind the tape to where the digitizing was halted and then begin again to digitize. The error message may or may not appear again. There is no break in timecode. FCP does not crash, there is nothing listed in any of the log files. Has anyone else run across this? Anyone have any ideas for a solution? We've tried just about everything we can think of. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a problem tape that gives me the message "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape, etc." every 18 seconds or so after which the VTR stops and happily starts to rewind. The tape was recorded in DVCAM and I had no problem capturing it some time back in November on a different machine. Now the same client wants me to capture it again and the tape simply does not work.
As I have saved all the previously captured material on the original drive in the office and also made a backup tape on a miniDV cassette (again recorded in DVCAM), I thought that the backup tape would work but no such luck! The symptoms are the same - 17-18 seconds of playback, then "end of tape" and rewind. This behavior does not change when I simply play the tape back or try to capture to FCP, iMovie or iDive. Setting capture to Non-controllable device also did not help because it was the VTR that could not handle the tape, not FCP.
This is very strange - the first capture in November gave me no trouble. Then I used a new Sony HDR-25 or some such deck, at home I have a new DSR11; the tape is the same. Going in 18-second capture sessions, I have downloaded all the material that the client needs but it was very embarrassing sitting near the guy and not being able to reign in the machinery. I searched this forum but found no workaround. Can anyone point to a place where things like this get explained, advice given, empathy offered? Thank you.

  • Strange newer FCP version error message when opening project

I'm working on a large (500+ hours) project that I have divided into seperate Final Cut projects so that I can load the sequences without waiting 10 minutes for the masterclips project to open. Lately, when I load the masterclips project it will give me an error message that says that it was made in a newer version of Final Cut. Then, when I restart FCP it will open fine. Does anybody know why it's doing this and how to fix the problem?
I have been copying a lot of media with media manager lately, it has crashed once or twice could that be part of the problem? Also, there are about 20,000 clips about 75% of them are online and they were captured in different capture projects so they are in different capture scratch folders. Is the fact that they are scattered a problem?

If you want, you could send me the project. I''ll
open it and do a save as and zap it back to you. You
should then be able to open it and do a reconnect.
May help. My email is in my profile. If it's too
big to email, you could bring it by my cutting room
(in times square). If you can email it, be sure and
archive the file before attaching to an email.
    Thank You
I really appreciate the offer and I may still take you up on that, but can I get the same result by opening it on one of out other editing systems and doing a save as? The files are too big to email and Times Square is a bit far from where we are.
Will reconnecting all of the media to a copy of the project help FCP dealing with badly written meta data for clips that is causing corruption. Is that the idea?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • FCP (Intel) not opening in FCP (PPC) Error Message

    Hi!
i have a project that was created in FCP 5.1.2 on a MacBook Pro and i can't seem to open it in my G5 running FCP 5.0.4. I keep receiving this general Error (41) message.
is there anyway to work around it?
    Thank you.

You should upgrade the software even if you have a G5 - 5.04 will never get any more bug fixes. Oh, and please press the or buttons over the posts that warrant it...

  • Burning to DVD error messages

FCP gives error message "the video file is incompatible" when attempting to burn in share menu - works when burned in compressor - tried emptying out the render cache and re-render still same error, any clues why?

Please confirm that you are running the ancient OS Panther 10.3 and which version of iDVD you are using.
It sounds as if your system is in need of serious repair, but firstly: how much free space do you have on your hard drive?

  • Capture Error Message: Tape Trouble--Check VTR

On certain sections of different Digital Betacam source tapes (via SDI and RS422 deck control--Sony J-30 deck @ DVC Pro 50 resolution) I get the following error message:
"Tape trouble--check VTR. Do no attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first."
The tape keeps running with this message up on the screen but the drive has stopped capturing. There are no timecode skip warnings and no other indications. Was wondering if this message is generated by Kona (will check with AJA on Monday) or FCP? I have successfully captured other sections from the same tape. Tape dub stock is brand new.
Perhaps the warning is correct and some anomally is being detected on the tape at only certain capture points on the same tape. There are no error messages on the deck display which tells me the deck & tape are actually ok. These pro decks are pretty good at letting you know if there's a tape slack, tape moisture or control track problem. But has anyone else experienced this and have knowledge about it?
    Thanks
    Steve

Sounds like the VCR is sending false signals, or they are true, and you just don't see the problem when the deck sends the message to FCP.... I'd be prone to start trouble shooting this by resetting all the parameters of the playback machine in it's on screen menu etc... I'd suppose too that if there is the slightest error being detected, the deck will kick out the capture process. So might need to have the deck sent to maintenance.

  • Error message when trying exprt from FCP

I've used Compressor many times with no problem. Now when I go to export with it the error message comes up:
File error: A file of this name already exists.
If I keep using compressor after this message it fails, no matter what settings or locations or file names I use. I did my first Mac software update about 6 hours before this problem started. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Frank
    Cranford, NJ

I, too, am receiving the "file of this name already exists" when I am trying to export with the "using compressor" option. Then I receive a failure message in Compressor after I submit. I have tried to change file names, etc, as was stated in the previous message.
I had not used FCP or Compressor for about a month and my first submission "using compressor" worked but subsequent ones did not even when I changed the project name or when I created a short little new project.
One thing I noticed is that a "tab" on the browser appears before the error message displays with what appears is a computer generated file name "CB26AB20-1722-11DA...". I wondered if this file is being created and referenced everytime "using compressor" is selected and is the "file of this name" that already exists. If so, where would this file be and can I delete it to start again?

  • Error message when importing motion files into FCP

    In FCP.
I choose a clip/clips in my sequence. Then choose send to motion project and follow the directions from the training dvd.
By unchecking (embed "motion" content) then save the file with a different name. Then continue with making my graphics over the video clip/clips.
When I am done I then shut off the video layer of the clip in the motion timeline. Then I save the project. Then close Motion and try to import the motion project in FCP.
When I try to import, I get an error message stating "File Error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
I go back to the training file to try the same procedure and it works fine.
Go back to my own project and it doesn't work.
    Any ideas? Anyone?
    I have a Mac Pro 2.66GHz / 5 gigs of ram / 512 vram ATI graphics card
Also working with universal software for FCP studio.
    Intel 2.66GHz Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    Intel 2.66GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    OK???
Don't know what the deal is. But I made a new sequence in my project and copied my other sequence with in the new one and then tried to do the whole clip step for step process of send to motion and importing back in and it worked!!!!
I check all the listed settings of my sequence in my browser window and both the old sequence and new sequence are the same.
I am happy that I can move on with my work, yet I am frustrated with the fact that I am not sure exactly what the problem is.
    Thank You Again!

  • Error Message "Tape Trouble - Check VTR"

I am using a Panasonic VTR AJ-D450(via Component and RS422 deck control @ DVC Pro 50 resolution) capturing with a Blackmagics Extreme HD and I get the following error message:
"Tape trouble--check VTR. Do no attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first."
The tape keeps running with this message up on the screen but the drive has stopped capturing. There are no timecode skip warnings and no other indications.
The main problem is that the capture using Blackmagic Deck Control is perfect, this message appears only in the FC2 capture. In another topic, Aja resolved this issue with a patch.
There are no error messages on the deck display which tells me the deck & tape are actually ok. But has anyone else experienced this and have knowledge about it?
    Thanks
    Andre

    Hello Guys,
Thank you for the support, I had solved the problem using the Keyspan USB where the Final Cut 2 started to capture the image normally.
I am not sure now about the compatibility between Blackmagics Decklink and RS422 of Panasonic VTRs.

  • ERROR message! importing Motion files back into FCP. please help.

ok...so i started my project, everything worked seamless from fcp to motion and back...and then bam! error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. ive done everything that i know, ive reinstalled, fcp studio and operating system...ive been over every setting...ive deleted preference files, repaired permissions... now my old motion files that were created before the error message still import just fine...can anyone help? i hate to outsource something i can do myself...
    thank you.

Have you tried changing the extension on the motion file? You can label it .mov and see if FCP recognizes it then.

  • "Missing Disks" Error Message - Unable to open FCP

Every time I tried to open FCP, a "missing disks" error message shows up and prevents me from opening the application. It says, "To preserve the integrity of the date used by Final Cut Pro, it is necessary to ensure the existence of the following path(s):" and it says "Macintosh HD is offline." There are two options for the error message, "Check Again" or "Reset Scratch Disks." When I click "Check Again," nothing happens. When I click, "Reset Scratch Disks", it takes me to a "Scratch Disks" window, which shows, "9.8GB on Macintosh HD is offline." I click "OK", but it only takes me back the same "missing disks" error message. What should I do to solve this error and open FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi -
If you are mid-project, then first I would find your project file and make a duplicate by Control-clicking on it, and selecting Duplicate. You can rename that new file so it is easy to remember. Once that is done, you have a protection back up of your project file so that whatever happens, you can recover back to this point in your project by opening the duplicated file.
Selecting (or Re-Selecting) a Scratch Disk does not affect what has been done in a project's past, it will only affect what FCP will do once it is launched and where it will place media and renders as you go forward.
A bigger concern/interest to me is why the disk Macintosh HD is offline, since Macintosh HD is usually the name of the internal system disk on your computer.
Have you renamed your internal hard disk (either intentionally or unintentionally)?
Do you have external disks connected to your computer?
Have you installed any new software - like Snow Leopard, or Fusion?
If you have had the disk Macintosh HD selected as your scratch disk all throughout your project up to this point, it is likely that the disk Macintosh HD has your captured footage and renders. So . . . if it is off-line as a scratch disk, once you reset your scratch disk to an available drive and open your project, it is likely that the project will show that all your media, which it previously associated with the missing disk is offline as well.
If that is the case, you will need to reconnect your media and re-render your renders. This can be done by selecting your offline clips and Control clicking on one of them and selecting Reconnect Media . . .
*If you are not feeling confident about proceeding, I would recommend a trip to an Apple store to get someone to walk you through the process.*
    Hope this helps.

  • Error message then FCP shuts down

While trying to open a project I am getting an error message "Searching for movie data file Sequence 1-FIN0-00000172" with a stop button at the bottom of the message box. After waiting and no luck, I click stop and the project continues to open only to stall out at 12%. I get the same error message only this time with "Without this file, the movie cannot play properly" and a Search and Cancel button on the bottom. I click cancel. The project continues to load, timelines appear, and then FCP crashes. I have trashed all the render files and installed Preference Manager hoping this would help but, it hasn't. Any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is my demo reel.
    Thanks
    Todd

Looks like the data file it's looking for is part of a QuickTime reference movie that no longer exists. Reference movies only work if all of what they reference (media files, renders etc.) is online on your computer. Self contained movies don't need to look for files like this because they have all of the media associated with them in the file itself.
So what seems to have happened to you is that you imported a reference movie from FCP or some other application, and then trashed part of what it referenced, or it doesn't reside on your computer at the moment, or someone else's computer where you created file has it on their drive. Render files can be part of this, so if you trashed them, they are goners.

  • AE Error message: Unable to locate plugin "Boris Red 3.0 FCP Filter"

I have edited a project in FCS HD and went back to make some changes and now when I open the project I get an error message that says "Unable to locate plugin "Boris Red 3.0 FCP Filter."
I used the Boris Red application to make some effects and had no problem with this before. I have located the filter in the users library/Application support files but I can't get Final Cut Pro to accept it. I went to the Boris Red website and found no help there, nor have they responded to my requests for assistance so I thought I would look here.
Another user posted this same problem at another website and the responses he got were not useful either. Can anyone help?

I re-installed the program and nothing changed. How do I retro FCP?
The older version I used does not work on Intel Mac Pros and the graphics card it requires is also obsolete. (Actually, it died and couldn't be replaced which forced me to drop my G5 and get a new MAc Pro which started this whole nightmare in the first place!)
So am I screwed? There really is no way to fix this and save all that work now? I have the After Effects program so would it be better to just forget about Boris altogether and redo the entire project in After Effects?
If so, I can't believe what a waste of time and money Boris is. All because FCP cannot locate ONE filter? When the filter is sitting right where it is supposed to be?

  • FCP throws out some wierd error messages

I just received the following error message whilst trying to open a project. I just had to share it.
    *The Document "Promo Seven Luke.fcp"*
*could not be opened. Final Cut Pro cannot*
*open files in the "Final Cut Pro Project File" format.*
So shall I try opening an Avid file and see what happens?.

    Hi -
Just out of curiosity, is your Keyboard Input source set to Australian?
Also, did you get this message when double clicking a project file to open it?
Have you tried opening the project from the File > Open menu?

  • After an OSX re-install .FCP files get an error message

I had to re-install my MacBook OSX because of an internal error.
Final Cut Studio II was also re-installed OK
    Now:
    1. None of my own projets (.fcp extension) will open
    2. None of the project form my Apple training series books will open
When I try to open a project this is the error message that I get:
File format is to recent for the current application
Did I miss an upgrade or something?
    Thanks

If you reinstalled FCP along with your OS, you'll likely need to run software update to reach the version you were at previously.
