FCP WITH DUAL QUAD MAC - PROGRAM NOT FAST ENOUGH

Hello, could anyone tell me the reason my new mac "Dual Quad (8 processors) 3.0 w/16gb or ram is not even blinking when I render projects in FCP/Motion? The processors are hardly working and I don't see much difference in overall speed from my previous mac or even my macbook pro. Is there reason the software isn't utilizing the full potential of this mac?

Well, a ram disk treats ram as though it is swappable memory exactly like virtual memory space on the system hard drive. The only difference is the RAM is orders of magnitude faster.
Back in the early PC days there was the 128k (or something like that) memory limit. To get around this all sorts of memory extender programs were written (QEMM was the best known). iirc they worked by simply swapping memory blocks from the base space to a higher (extended) space. To the hardware there was only the base amount. Ah, the bad memories flood back ...

    Unfortunately yes, but Snow Leopard is still a great OS in the meantime so don't rush in too quick if you really don't need to.

  • Current xserve raid speed rate not fast enough

    guys,
    my xserve raid having problem when i edit HD project 1920*1080, its ok when i edit, but when i view all 30 mins movie, its hang when play till 5 mins of the movie, and keep on hanging after that, why is that? is it because the setting of my xserve raid got problem? read n write speed not fast enough?
    help plzzzz

    Both the write cache ticks should be on, The allow host cache flushing should be off. The use steady streaming mode tick should be off also. (So the pattern of th ticks is: on, off, on, off)
    The stripes stting depends on the cache size of the disk. On disks with lower than 16 MB, the 8 stripes setting is right. On disks from 16MB cache you can use the 128 stripes setting (In general the 750 GB disks have 16 MB, the others have lower).

  • Jagged wavy lines edge of CRT display with Dual Core Mac mini

    My friend recently bought a Dual Core Intel Mac mini and when hooking it up to a 19 inch MAG monitor there are often wavy lines on the edges of the screen. They go up and down both sides, are jagged, and also are not static but moving quickly. Sometimes it seems to behave normally while other times if it doesn't show up on the boot screen it will show up after a little bit of use.
    At first it seems that the more stuff I opened the worse it got, so I thought it could be the shared video RAM as he did not upgrade from the original 512 , but that should only slow the computer down anyway. Now I think rather than the RAM I think it could be related to the Apple DVI to VGA adapter, resloution/refresh rate, or just bad video hardware. I can't rule out that it just won't play nice with the majority of CRT monitors out there either. Sometimes changing the resolution/refresh rate helps and other time it doesn't. From what I heard my friend experienced wavy lines somewhat on his own monitor but I don't think it did it when using a DVI to HDMI cable to his Sony 50 LCD (and I didn't see it when hooking it up to mine either).
    If anyone has any idea what could be going on I would greatly appreciate it. The reason it is so important is that my friend decided that the Mac mini was kind of an impulse buy and didn't need his iBook and another computer for his TV so he is going to sell it to my brother who is in need of a computer. So I don't want him to get into something that will give him problems right away.
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

    So is the MAG monitor your brother's monitor? That wasn't clear.
    What you are seeing will most likely be limited to the MAG monitor. The MAG is experiencing some kind of noise coupling in to horizontal sync, likely from it's own power supply. You are correct that this will be related to the sync rate. Changing the vertical refresh to something higher, like 85 Hz or higher if available, might help to mask the noise. Also, power supply loading will affect how the noise manifests, so you weren't imagining when you thought that opening more applications made it worse. It didn't have anything to do with the mini but rather the different average picture level on the screen was changing the monitor's power supply loading and hence changing the beat frequency between hsync and the power supply's switching frequency.
    I think it is safe to say most of what you see is bound to the monitor and not the mini. Furthermore, if you are stuck with this monitor, you can probably lessen the appearance of the noise by mucking with the refresh rate out of the mini.

  • All MAC programs not working

    Help Anyone Please !?!?! i shut down Friday, everything was fine, tried to open mail on Monday, the arrow just appears after the icon bounces once, the mouse icon spins and spins, i can't click anything in the menu at the top (if it's even there), i can alt+tab to the program, but there are no windows and no drop downs in the menu (not even the apple, i have to switch to a working program for that).
    Then i find that iCal is doing the same thing, so is iPhoto, and iTunes. Then i go to use calculator and when i hit '=' it just spins the hard drive and shows 'not responding' in the force quit menu.
    i tried to update software, but that spins and spins after clicking 'install''
    now i'm having problems in firefox where other macs have no problems, i tried to use safari, but that doesn't load either. i'm thinking there's some internet code in the OS that is messing up the programs that do work. (photoshop, flash, etc...)
    has anyone had this happen to them and what is the solution? i know to pull out my hair, but what else?

    Welcome To  Discussions buckywoods!
    Exactly which model iMac G5 is it?
    What is the Processor speed?
    What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
    How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
    Which exact version of Mac OS X is installed?
    What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?
    Before you shut down the iMac, did you make any changes, like upgrading the system? Did you update or install any applications or programs, etc?
    Or what were you doing on the iMac, before you shut down?
    Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?
    Are you able to startup from the system install disc to run Disk Repair?
    THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
    1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
    2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
    4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
    7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
    8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
    10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
    11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    Have you run Repair Permissions?
    TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
    1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
    3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
    Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
    Or if Tiger 10.4.x is installed, here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.4.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
    When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
    If you cannot access Disk Utility, you can run Repair Permissions, from the install disc, as you did for Repair Disk.
    Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
    If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
    Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?

  • Compile packages yourself with dual/quad core

    I'm compiling some packages and svn myself and I'm wondering, why 'make' only use one of the 4 cores on the cpu ? is there som way to make it use all four ? I'd assume compiling would be a lot faster.

    -j5 on a Core 2 Duo is fine, while -j10 on a Quad works Well, at least according to some ricers.
    -j1, for a case example, is required for compiling anything VST-related.
    When you come across a build that fails with regards to job servers, take a look at the default makefile. Few will tell you that > make=-jn will not work. This was discussed to a little extent here.

  • Most native Mac programs not responding

    Hi all. Just this morning I started up my computer, and almost none of the Mac applications run.
    I am running system 10.3.9. I also have Quark 6.5 and Adobe CS2 and Macromedia Studio 8 on my system.
    Mail - when clicking on my Dock shortcut, it bounces a couple times, then stops with the triangle. no window shows up, then if you right-click on the dock item, "application not responding" shows up
    Activity Montior - bounces on the Dock for 30 seconds, then stops, with no triangle below it. also shows up "not responding"
    Disk Utility - will show my HD, but when I click it, pinwheel starts and I have to force quit
    Console - blank window will appear, then pinwheel starts
    Safari - blank window will appear, then pinwheel starts
    System Preferences - main screen appears, then pinwheel starts whenever I click an option.
    Some Mac applications that DO WORK though: FontBook, Terminal, Calculator, Grab
    Here's what I've tried already:
    - starting up off of the install disk and running "disk repair", then running "repair permissions"
    - starting up in single-user mode and running the "fsck -f" command
    - deleting my mail, activity monitor, and disk utility preferences
    - zapping the pRAM
    - repairing permissions through the terminal window
    I also haven't installed any new fonts recently.
    one strange thing though. when I deleted my mail preferences and started Mail back up, the "create new account" window did appear, but after entering my company's information, the application froze up before getting to the inbox window.
    I would really appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks!

  • CS4: How to set up landscape orientation doc with dual page setup vertical not horizontal

    I'm an InDesign newbie and am trying to set up document presets for a landscape-oriented document that will have binding at the top and bottom edges of the page, not the default left and right edges.  So when I open up my spread of pages 2 and 3 I want to see page 2 ABOVE page 3 not to the left of it.
    I can't see any way to do this. Am I missing something or is this just not possible in InDesign CS4 (v6.0.6)?

    The closest you can come out of the box is to set up a facing pages document using portrait orientation, then select the spreads in the Pages panel and Rotate Spread View 90 degrees Counter-Clockwise before you begin the layout.
    This will allow you to work "as if" your pages were landscape and bound on the long edges, but things like x and y coordinates will be swapped bcause you are really still working on rotated pages.

  • Nifty scroll script still not fast enough

    I started writing this python script because I wanted to have a scrolling, fixed-width mpc status line in my dwm top bar:
    #!/usr/bin/python3
    from time import time
    from subprocess import getstatusoutput
    import sys
    _ERROR_MSG = "Usage: scrollout [-l (int)] (cmd)"
    def input_cmd(cmd,l):
    if cmd == "":
    s = sys.stdin.read()
    else:
    e,s = getstatusoutput(cmd)
    if e: sys.exit(1)
    s = s.replace("\n"," ")
    s += (" " * int(l/3))
    k = len(s)
    t = int(k*(time()/k-int(time()/k)))
    if k <= l: # static
    return s
    else: # scrolling
    while len(s[t:]) < l: s += s
    return s[t:t+l]
    def run():
    _arg = -1
    length = 20
    cmd = ""
    enter_cmd = False
    flags = ("-l")
    for arg in sys.argv[1:]:
    if enter_cmd or (arg not in flags and _arg not in flags):
    cmd += arg + " "
    enter_cmd = True
    elif _arg == "-l":
    try:
    length = int(arg)
    except:
    print(_ERROR_MSG)
    exit(1)
    _arg = arg
    output=input_cmd(cmd,length)
    print(output)
    run()
    Since it uses time since Epoch to determine how much to scroll the text at any given moment it doesn't have to have any internal loops or run any longer than it takes to compute the output. You can simply call it like so:
    scrollout -l 20 mpc current
    alternatively
    mpc current | scrollout -l 20
    For example, in my statusbar script I have the following line:
    mpc_status="|$(scrollout -l 20 mpc current) ($(mpc | grep -Eo '[0-9]*\:[0-9]*\/[0-9]*\:[0-9]*')) "
    I find it works nicely, but is a bit slow. Not surprisingly, since it has to re-import all of it's libraries every time it gets launched. To be a truly useful script I imagine it would have to be able to finish it's task in less than one second. Right now it's just above that, ofcourse somewhat depending on what command is being piped through it. The big timestealer, however, is the module imports (according to the python profiler). Having a pretty limited experience of programming, I would like to know if anyone knows of a good workaround for this. Perhaps some way to speed up the module imports or to mimic some of the functionality of these modules without having to import them?
    Cheers,
    Mach

    Thanks a lot guys! Glad to see such enthusiasm. :-)
    juster: But I don't know C! :-) Oh well, I'm working nights, so I have time to learn.
    Rewrote the script in python based on juster's algorithm:
    #!/usr/bin/python3
    from time import time
    import sys
    w = 20
    if len(sys.argv) > 1: w = sys.argv[1]
    s = sys.stdin.read().replace("\n","") + (" " * int(w/3))
    if len(s) > w:
    i = int(time() % w)
    while len(s[i:]) < w: s += s
    s = s[i:i+w]
    print(s)
    Then wrote a small bash script to run each of the different variants a hundred times and output their average execution time. Brace yourselves...
    The script originally posted:
    # mpc current | runtime10 scrollout.py | grep nanoseconds
    Average run time: 0 seconds (205726798 nanoseconds)
    Roughly the same script, frozen with cx_freeze:
    # mpc current | runtime10 scrollout | grep nanoseconds
    Average run time: 0 seconds (166651145 nanoseconds)
    The perl script submitted by juster:
    # mpc current | runtime10 ./perlscrollout | grep nanoseconds
    Average run time: 0 seconds (24679770 nanoseconds)
    The python script from this post:
    # mpc current | runtime10 ./pythonscrollout | grep nanoseconds
    Average run time: 0 seconds (190167249 nanoseconds)
    So, the perl script still clearly stands out. Also, the new python script doesn't stand a chance compared to the old frozen executable, even though the script itself is proven faster than the original one. A frozen version of the new script will only get me so far in optimization - obviously, this is not a job for python.
    Anyone care to prove me wrong?

  • HT4942 Why is the size display of Keynote (and all the iWorks programs) not adjustable enough to allow 2 programs to be viewed side by side!  The won't allow me to fully choose how small I want it to be!

    I often use Keynote AND Pages jumping back and forth when creating a presentation.  I used to be able to open each and make them fit side by side to work so I could see both evenly.  But now these iWork programs no longer allow me to shrink their size displayed to fit this way.  I can only shrink them to be about 2/3rds of my monitor which means the other is grossly covered up by the other and I have to keep clicking over the other to see information and then click back on the other which is immediately covered up again and I have to memorize what I saw on the other program to add to the other!  Frustrating!!!  Is there a way to minimize these programs to any size I want?!?!?!?!

    Same thing happens on my mbpr 15", I'm going to guess that Gary is running the programs on a large screen iMac and maybe it the limitations of our laptops' screens preventing us from running the apps at 1/2 screen size.
