FCP Won't Recognize 16x9

I shot some stuff with the camera set to 16x9, but I'm experiencing some difficulty capturing it in FCP. When I try capturing anywhere from 10 minutes of footage or more, it converts it to 4x3. It only captures it as 16x9 in very small batches. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?

Going by the book, it's probably best to be capturing as DV-NTSC Anamorphic.
And since you didn't mention anything, I gotta ask - are you receiving error messages of any kind? Is there any difference in the workflow between the 10+ minute captures and the shorter captures?
And, as far as the Item Properties goes, select one of the clips that you have captured in your Browser, then press Command-9. Type up what you get in that dialog and share it here.

I have FCP ver4.5. Is that why?

    That is why.
I don't believe v. 6 of FCP recognizes it either and my guess is that capture will be by the Apple Intermediate Codec AIC in iMovie

  • FCP won't recognize my DV device

I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.1 and can't get it to recognize my DV. At first FCP would open without the "unable to locate external device" warning and not even show a DV device as an option. Now it shows the warning and just won't acknowledge my camera. I have updated all my software, tried two cameras and two cables, refreshed my devices but nothing works. I installed everything on my old G-4 and it works fine. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forum!
You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time but note that if you have QT Pro, you’ll have to re-purchase it.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • FCP won't recognize hi-def camera

I am running FCP 5.0.4 and have been using a Panasonic DV camera with no problems. Today I tried hooking up a Sony HDV camera (HDR-HC7), but Final Cut won't communicate with it. There is software that came with the camera, but it is not compatible with a Mac. I have a coworker running this same setup and it works fine for him. He never installed the software. He does however have a newer version of FCP. Is my version of FCP too old, or do I just not have the proper settings? Thanks!

In any case check this out - it may help:

  • FCP 7 won't recognize hv20

I use the Canon HV20. I recorded video in widescreen (not HD) and fcp won't recognize the camera. Imovie does, so I know it's not a camera/wire problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Try changing FCP's Device Control Preset to FIREWIRE BASIC.

  • Final Cut won't recognize video

    Hello,
I've been trying to capture some video onto an G5 iMac, OS 10.4.11, but whenever I go to log and capture, FCP won't recognize the video. Occasionally, an image will pop up and then freeze, but most of the time I'm just looking at the "preview disabled" window. The timecode will show up, but it will stick at one number instead of counting upwards when I hit play on the tape.
If I have Video Settings set to firewire and hit capture, I just get the beachball and have to restart the program. If I use "non-controllable device" I'll get a warning message that no video has been detected.
I've tried the very same setup--same scratch disk, same camera, same tape, same settings--using an iBook and it worked just fine. I recently upgraded to FCP 6, however I experienced this problem both before and after I upgraded. Actually, I managed to capture once after my initial upgrade, but then it stopped working again. This is a work computer and I've been told it has captured video in the past, although i've never seen it in action.
My only guess is that this is a hardware problem with the firewire ports? I've tried them both and neither work. If anyone has any other ideas about what the problem would be, I'd love to hear it.
    Thanks!

Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > FireWire. Do you see your camera listed in System Profiler?
What format are you trying to capture?
Do your Easy Setup and Sequence Settings correspond to the format you are trying to capture?

  • Final Cut 5 - Won't recognize video files when I try to reconnect media

Help! Somehow FCP5 no longer recognizes my clips as video files.
The problem started when I transferred some clips to another drive so I could reformat my primary external drive. (It's new, and had been formatted for PC, and I felt I needed to reformat it for Mac.) I moved the files off the drive using my PC, held them on another external PC-formatted drive, then used MacDrive 7 to put them back once the formatting was done.
When I plugged the newly formatted drive back in, my Mac no longer recognized the files as video files because the file extension had been removed... It thought they were "Unix executable files." I added ".mov" to the end of the file names and they then seemed to work fine in QuickTime.
But FCP will not recognize them now... At first, when I try to "reconnect media," they are grayed out; when I select "All files" in the Reconnect Media dialog and they appear to be available. But when I choose one nothing happens and it goes back to the Reconnect Media dialog.
Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • FCPX won't recognize projects/events on my External Hard Drive

I have all my projects and events for FCPX on my external hard drive because my MacBook Air does not have enough room for it. I've been working on my Air for a couple years and I just got a iMac. I thought it would be simple enough just to plug in my hard drive into my iMac and it would recognize everything, but sadly it isn't. I've looked everywhere and I couldn't find any fixed for it. I can just create new events from my old events but that would take alot of work. I thought there would be an easier way to be able to import all my old events/project and start working on them.
*Also when I create an event on my iMac external hard drive, it puts it will all my old events in the same folder, but still won't recognize them. Stumped
    Thanks

You'll be updating to FCP X 10.1.1.  It uses Libraries now, whole different thing.

  • Canon Vixia HF30 showing up as Flash drive, open iPhoto....FCP won't log/tr

Help! I teach a media class and have had this happen before. Log and transfer won't recognize the camera (yes it is plugged in to power and usb 2.0) ...any ideas? I can see the MTS files, but don't want to waste hours converting them manually to .MOV
    thanks!!

Here's exactly how I explained it awhile back to someone else (and he said this worked for him):
Try using Disk Utility to save your SD card (or camera hard drive if you have one) as a disk image. Then open the disk image and try Log and Transfer. FCP should see the disk image mounted on your desktop and import the files. This has always worked for me with AVCHD/.mts files. Plus, it gives you a nice small(ish) backup file of all your footage.

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod Nano (1GB, 1st generation)

I have been having problems Sync'ing my iPod nano with iTunes, however, the more I read help articles and follow the steps, the worse the problem gets. (I'm on a PC using Windows XP)
I've gotten to the point where I updated my iPod software in Disk mode (up until then it was being recognized only in Disk mode), but when iTunes failed to recognize it when not in Disk mode I preceded to restore my iPod to factory settings, as instructed in the help articles.
Now, up until then, I still had music in my iPod, and I was being able to charge it and listen to my music even though I couldn't sync the iPod anymore. After restoring, I not only lost my music (which I was aware of), but it STILL did not fix my problem. So I started to get annoyed.
I then noticed that my iPod was being recognized by My Computer, just not by iTunes, so I began to perform the steps indicated in the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I restarted my iPod service - no luck
I removed iTunes - no luck
I emptied my Temp directory and restarted...
That's when iTunes stopped recognizing my iPod altogether, not even in Disk mode. Not only that, but it seems to have affected the iPod itself, since it won't turn off or exit Disk mode anymore. So now I'm scared of going though with any more steps on whichever "help" articles and making the problem even worse than it already is (if that's possible).
The only other information I can provide is that windows is still recognizing my iPod, no problem, and when I connect my iPod, iTunes actually launches... but DOESN'T recognize a thing. So I ran a diagnostics using iTunes and here's what I got (iPod diagnostics):
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

    Connected Device Information:
IPOD (H:\), iPod nano running firmware version 1.3.1
All green lights, and as you can see, according to iTunes, NO PROBLEM! Except that it won't recognize the iPod that the disgnistics says exists and reads... ?!?!?!
If anyone could shed some light on my situation, i would be VERY greatful!

My IPod Nano will charge when connected to my computer but it won't come up on My Computer or iTunes. So I can't update the songs. I've already tried reseting the iPod. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it.

    Hello dmbnewfie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod classic is not being recognized in iTunes when you connect it to your computer. I know you have tried some troubleshooting on the Apple website as well, but without knowing which steps you have completed, I would suggest working through the attached iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant.
