FCP wont capture from Panasonic PV-GS180

Hello,
I am trying to capture footage from my Panasonic PV-GS 180 to FCE 3.5, OS X 4.9. Is this the problem that it will not capture? or does anyone know if the Panasonic model doesn't work well with Macs? I am a bit frustrated about all of this. Please help!

Hi! I have the same camera and had (have) the same problem. I am running a PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.4.9. As my computer is brand new, and the only software I even have loaded is FCE HD 3.5, I knew it wasn't a memory problem. I finally got so frustrated that I called the FCE support people. They told me that the Panasonic isn't on the "list" of cameras that work well with FCE. (I had a small heart attack at that point considering I've sunk a considerable amount of $$ into getting a 'good quality' set up to basically make small little movies.)
BUT the good news is that there's a decent work around for this. In the Easy Set Up menu, choose DV-NTSC DV Converter. This will allow you to do a Capture Now, but you won't have any control over the footage, so you'll have to make sub clips later. I've also been experimenting with the DV-NTSC Firewire choice from the Easy Set Up. That will give you control of the footage, but I did have one crash and one "abort due to dropped audio" yesterday. So... Not sure if that's the best way to go.
I'd really love to hear how this works for you and if you've discovered any other work arounds to this problem.

  • Problems capturing from Panasonic PV GS-150

I am trying to capture from a Panasonic-MiniDV cam PV GS-150. I have it connected firewire to my MacBook Pro. The camera itself has a mini B 5-Pin output. (It took me forever to find that cable!)
When I click "capture" this is the message I receive:
"Attempted to capture a video device without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presets and try again."
Is this referring to Easy Setup? I have already tried that. Is there an actual place to select a specific device?
    Thanks!
    Amy

Yeah, use the "easy setup" for DV (PAL OR NTSC, i.e. match what you shot) and see if that doesn't improve things.
Also might select "Refresh A/V devices" from the View menu at the bottom... that sometimes gets things going. Do this after you've reset the easy setup...
If that fails, try restarting FCP. With the camera connected and turned on using it's VTR mode. i.e. Playback mode, not camera mode... they get called all sorts of things on different cameras, but it's got to be in that mode for FCP to see it at all.

  • Capturing from  Panasonic HDC-HS300

Can anybody tell me a good and fast way to capture from this type of camera. The connection is USB2, so Final Cut doen't recognize my camera I got this camera as a present from my husband for my birhtday ... I already donwloaded Voiltaic to transfer the MTS-files on the camera to mov-files but it takes a very long time ... and also lot of memory. I'm really surprised that Final Cut doesn't recognize this USB2-cameras, you hardly find firewire-connected ones anymore. And in the store they always say that USB2 is almost as fast as Firewire! So why doesn't Final Cut get USB2 in his program??

Editable video takes up a lot of space for starters...
As far as I know you're transfer of the footage through Voiltaic is the way you need to go here...
USB 2 can be almost as fast as FW, but the way that it transfers packets of data isn't friendly with video systems. That's why USB 2 drives aren't recommended for editing video. Firewire drives or another internal SATA drive if you have a tower there, are the way to go here, and be sure to put your media on a drive other than your startup disk for better performance, and heck, they are inexpensive these days.
One of the things you need to understand is that you're working in professional software but shooting with a consumer camera not really made to work directly with FCP, or most any other pro NLE system. An AVCHD consumer camera would do you good... they interface better with FCP, and you don't need another app to transfer them with.
Might go fastest with what you have though by copying the camera's files to a hard drive before you do the transfer through Voiltiac..

  • FCP HD wont capture from firewire after updating OS

    Hi,
There is a similar thread to this running, but it doesn't seem to be the exact same problem so I don't want to confuse issues.
I have been using FCP HD for years now, with the same kit and without doing any updates. I have recently had problems with DVD Studio Pro and decided to connect the Mac upto the net and download any usefull updates. Since updating to the latest version of Panther I seem to be having problems with FCP capturing using the firewire.
I have gone to "About this mac" thing and can see the Firewire port and it shows it is connected to my VTR, but FCP just doesn't seem to be able to see the firewire. I have done all the refesh A/V devices etc. I cant change the playback setting to "All Frames" as it is ghosted, and the other menu below (cant remember the name, Video something) is showing "[Missing] Firewire PAL" as it normally does if the VTR is turned off or the firewire is unplugged, But it isnt!!!
I though, **** maybe it is just a broken firewire lead, but then I noticed I could still control the VTR from FCP, it would play fast forward etc, but no picture was showing So I dont think it can be the cable, or are the cable made in such a way that the control may work, but the video signal may be missing??
I also found it a little odd that this would happen straight after I have updated Panther
Any help would be very helpfull (and sorry for the long post)
    Cheers

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
    Reboot
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Good luck.

  • Live capturing from Panasonic AG-HVX200 using Final Cut and MacBook Pro

Does anyone know if the MacBoko Pro using Final Cut can capture live 1080i video from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 to an external firewire hard drive?

Great info. I'll get on those other forums.
Not that it is an 'issue,' but to answer the question I was INITIALLY thinking of getting a laptop just to capture video, and edit on my desktop. But I see that the advice of getting the biggest baddest laptop would be a better idea and I've read others say that being able to edit 'on the road,' is a great potential.
I checked out the only tested and approved by Panasonic Firestore and it's the FOCUS FS-100 that comes standard with a 100GB hard drive that provides 1.5 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time with a list price of $2,195.00.
(If using PAL, you need the PAL version)
Other than the valuable other forums mentioned here, I found a good site for FAQ's for the Mac/AG-HVX-200/FCP, at: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/faq/p2faq .htm
These FAQ's, above, say that "going directly into a PC is possible, but it may fail to record some frames per second. This depends on the performance of PC. So we do not recommend this method."
There is a rebate if buying the USA warrentied camera before the end of the year: a free 8GB P2 card (advertised as a $1,200 value)
I think this answers all my questions about this topic. Thanks everyone for the info and the patience.
P.S. - There is a free contest, BTW, to win the biggest badest laptop, the 17"-MacBook Pro, at http://www.pcmag.com (of all places!)

  • Capturing from Panasonic DVX100

I shot 24pA, and I've seen other posts but still can't figure this out. I understand that I need to capture with "Advanced pulldown". When I "log and capture", my tape plays on the camera (deck), but nothing shows up on the log and capture screen.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Gerry

You need the Final Cut Pro forum. This is Final Cut Express.

  • Trouble Capturing from Canon Optura 20

For the past few days I've had trouble getting FCP to capture from my camera. It is picking up the camera and I am able to control it (play, stop, rewind) from the computer. I set the in and out point to capture and it starts but only gets a few seconds before it says something is wrong with my camera or tape. I've tried capture now, capturing a clip and batch capture. iMovie will capture but the imported DV files from there don't work quite as well in FCP. It has all worked before so I'm sure its fixable. Any help will be much appreciated. THANKS!!!

sounds like either a firewire bus or a quicktime issue issue.
If it has worked before and does not now, have you either added new external drives or upgraded your FCP/Quicktime installation?
new external drives: Try removing the drives and capture to an internal hard drive. Does it work? if so, you have a firewire bus collision issue.
upgraded FCP/Quicktime: Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg

  • I am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize

i am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize. I am not able to capture the content in DV mode. i am using a Firewire 800 to 400 converter and a 6 pin firewire cable to connect to the SonyHDV VTR. Please suggest me how do i do this.

The 800-400 converter plugs have proved a problem for this. What version of the software are you using. It sounds like an older version of FCP, if so you should ask your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Capture Video from Panasonic AG-HMC40

I am having trouble capturing video from my camera - Panasonic AG-HMC40 HD camera
I keep getting a message:  Capture Device Offline.
I am able to capture from iMovie and Final Cut X....
Does anyone know the correct capture settings?

You don't have to capture. You ingest.
IE: Copy files from your camera memory card onto your hard drive using the media browser.
See extract from Adobe Help below:
Import assets from file-based sources with Media Browser
You can import assets into Premiere Pro directly from tapeless media. However, it is more efficient to transfer tapeless media contents to a hard disk before importing. Also, playback performance is much better from a dedicated internal hard drive or RAID than from a camera or memory card reader.
Use the Media Browser, instead of File > Import, to import files from tapeless sources. The Media Browser assembles the relevant files into coherent clips, and does not import irrelevant non-media files sometimes found in the folders of tapeless media.
(Optional) Transfer the entire contents of one or more P2 cards, Sony Compact Flash cards, XDCAM media, XDCAM EX SxS cards, hard disk camcorders, DVDs, or AVCHD media to a hard disk. For information about transferring these media, see About transferring files.
Note:  For XDCAM EX, copy the entire BPAV folder and its contents, not just one MP4 file at a time.
If the Media Browser is not already open, select Window > Media Browser. Note:  You can dock or group the Media Browser like any other panel in Premiere Pro.
Browse to the folder containing the media files. The Media Browser shows a thumbnail or icon (depending on the format) and shot name for each shot in the folder. The Media Browser automatically aggregates spanned clips and shot metadata from the subfolders into single clips for any of these formats. The Media Browser shows different sets of metadata for different formats.
(Optional) To preview a shot before importing it, double-click the shot in the Media Browser.  Premiere Pro plays the clip in the Source Monitor without importing it into the Project panel.
Either select File > Import From Browser, drag clips from the Media Browser into the Project panel, or drag clips from the Media Browser into a timeline.
The asset or assets are imported into the Project panel as whole clips.

  • Cant see the videos that I captured from my camcorder, into iMovie, on my hard drive or in FCP.

I can only see these files in my iMove Library. I cant see them at all from inside FCPX. I just want to import the video's I already captured from iMovie into FCPX.

Version 10 of iMovie and 10.0.8 of FCP X Trial. If I could just locate where the video's I captured are in the Macintosh HD then surely I could use that video. They are large files I assume since they were captured from 1 hour long DV tapes but I just dont see them anywhere on the HD.

  • FCP 10.1 DV capturing from camera breaking the scenes into unwanted clips by flashing a black screen on import window. But its fine and accurate with adobe premiere pro cc ? Any solution * Advance Thanks

FCP 10.1 DV capturing from camera breaking the scenes into unwanted clips by flashing a black screen on import window. But its fine and accurate with adobe premiere pro cc ?
    Any solution * Advance Thanks

FCP X will import into separate clips every time it detects a scene change (as when you stopped and started recording in the camera). There is no option to avoid this, as far as I known.
You may try importing from camera using Quicktime Player X and then bringing the imported file into FCP X.

  • Crash after capture from tape, have to repair permissions to re-open FCP.

    Final Cut 6 installed on 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Whenever I try to capture from a camcorder the computer locks up at end of capture and I have to repair permissions to get FCP opened again.
Doesn't happen when capturing from a hard drive or card.
    Really killing me time wise.
    Anyone else ever see this?

    Hi Spudsy,
Does this happen with one particular camcorder, if so which make and model is it. Also are you using capture now or log and capture.

Lightroom says that I have the latest version, but Lightroom does not recognize RAW captures from my new Panasonic DMC-GH4. When will an update for this camera be available?

The GH4 must be very new as it’s not listed in Adobe’s supported cameras, so wait until the next version of LR.  Usually there is one every 3-4 months with a release-candidate available at Adobe Labs before that:  http://labs.adobe.com/
