FCP wont start up after crash - trashing prefs

i've been told that trashing prefs can solve many crash-related issues with FCP.
can someone tell me how to do that?
working with latest version of software

FCP Rescue will certainly take all the pain out of this process, with the added bonus of managing backup prefs too, in case it goes screwy again...
however, fwiw you can also do this manually.
just go to your users Library folder and look in the Preferences folder within.
you need to trash 4 files:
com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
then inside another subfolder called "Final Cut Pro User Data"
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prof Cache
there is also a apple knowledgebase article about this process (for FCP4.5)

good luck

  • I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time

I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time. I changed out the hard drive and reinstalled Leopard. If I mess with it a little I can get it to start up usually by repairing the hard drive with another computer, one time I just held down the P-R-option and command keys and it worked. Once its on it will restart no problem but if it sits for and hour or so it will get stuck either in the grey screen or blue screen. I also pushed the smu button but didnt work. Please help? Thank you.

For this type of question, we need to know which iMac you have. This forum covers G3, G4, and G5 iMacs that have different hardware, and any recommendations are better handled if people know which you have. For starters, do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and look at teh processor type.
You also need to tell us the version of the Mac OS you have, also avaiabe from "About this Mac.
If the processor type says "Intel," you have a newer iMac that this forum covers and should report in the area for current iMacs here:

  • Macbook pro wont start up after trying fsck -y (incorrect block count)

my 2 months macbook pro won't start up after numerous attempts and ive tried fsck -y and it says "incorrect block count for file system.log (it should be 184 instead of 108) help please

it just says start up disk full, its not full however it has at least 10Gb of space left.
Your HD is full!  How large is your HD?  You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.  You need to do some serious housekeeping.  However, you need to get to your desktop to do that.
Can you safe boot?  Read the threads over in the "More Like This" column over here.----------->

  • XP wont start up after install in boot camp??? Wont format either?

Can anyone please help.... I am trying to use boot camp to install windows xp and i go through all the steps fine, i partition, and then start the install. It lets me select the partition and then it installs. It restarts then nothing. It wont start up in windows? I dont know what i am doing wrong please help i need this to work asap. Thanks in advance.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
sounds like you are the 'victim' of the newer XP install CDs which somehow don't give you the chance to reformat the destination partition during the XP install process.
The BootCamp Installation Guide clearly state that you have to reformat the WIndows partition from within the Windows installer.
frederic1943 has posted a workaround to this which can be found in here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10179186
    Hope it helps

  • Open directory unable to start up after crash

    Hi everyone,
Our OS X Server 10.8.4 crashed. After booting up again open directory doesn't want to start up so LDAP isn't running which means nobody can access their mails or do anything.
When trying to start the Open Directory service in the "Server" app it just says "Unable to load replica list"
Looking at the Open Directory Log after trying to switch it on this is what I get :
2013-06-28 15:22:53.830872 SAST - 43.7184, Module: AppleODClientLDAP - unable to create LDAP connection context - no server specified
    2013-06-28 15:22:53.830888 SAST - 43.7184 - Client: opendirectoryd, UID: 0, EUID: 0, GID: 0, EGID: 0

    2013-06-28 15:23:23.832473 SAST - 43.7189 - Client: opendirectoryd, UID: 0, EUID: 0, GID: 0, EGID: 0

    2013-06-28 15:23:23.832488 SAST - 43.7189 - Client: opendirectoryd, UID: 0, EUID: 0, GID: 0, EGID: 0
2013-06-28 15:23:23.832488 SAST - 43.7189, Module: AppleODClientLDAP - unable to open connection to LDAP server - unable to create connection context
Does anyone have any advice on how to get it up and running again? I'd hate to lose all my users emails and do the server over. I have a time machine backup of a week ago as well which I guess is the second-to-last resort to restore the entire server from there?
    Please help, I'm desperate here
    Thanks
    J

I was able to restore the existing server with the automatic OD backup that Server.app creates. When my OD fails to start after a crash and db_recover commands don't work, it's always worked for me to restore the odmaster from a backup using the command:
    sudo slapconfig -restoredb /private/var/backups/ServerBackup_OpenDirectoryMaster.sparseimage
I'm careful to keep an independent OD backup with Carbon Copy Cloner and this preflight script.
You can also grab an earlier version of the sparse image ServerBackup_OpenDirectoryMaster.sparseimage from a Time Machine backup. It's also possible to rsync the database files directory from a Time Machine backup.

  • Imac 24 won't start up after crash!

Last night i was playing world of warcraft and also running itunes and firefox, and out of the blue my imac crashed into a white screen. I immediately turned it off and back on but it doesn't get past the white apple screen, after a while the screen goes blue, purple or black and stays there. It won't boot from cd nor start up in safe mode. I tried hardware check and says everything is ok, also the /sbin/fsck, PRAM and nothing...
My setup is 24" imac 3.06 4gb ram NVIDIA 8800 Snow leopard 10.6.4 (i believe)
Please help it's urgent, my job depends on this!

Already tried all that if you read my post...
Update: I did the extended hardware test and got this:
    Error 4MOT/2/40000004:HDD-1440
Does anyone know what this is all about and how to solve it? (does it have anything to do with my issue?)

  • Flashing question mark on start up after crash

    Hi all
i was using my Mac mini 2012 with Yosemite installed. I was streaming using air play to my speakers and I went to open Safari and it was stuck on a beach all. I left it for a minute then the Mac crashed and restarted. Upon restarting, I was greeted by a flashing folder with a question mark. I then did a hard reset and managed to boot back into the Mac no problem.
I installed a crucial 512gb SSD a month ago and not had any problems before. Disk utility shows the drive is verified and I done a verify disk check and everything came back fine.
anyone know what could of potentislly caused this? My first concern was the starting signs of a ssd failure but it seems to be working ok again

It could be a symptom of a SSD problem, because the question mark shows up when your Mac does not find any bootable volume (it does not find your SSD drive).
As this might happen again, I recommend you to make a backup of your files onto an external drive with Time Machine -> Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support By doing this, you will have your data safe in case that problem shows up again. If it carries on happening, I would recommend you to replace the SSD.

    Hello, Shaiful Affandi.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your device will not power on and you have some troubleshooting steps with the issue persisting.  There are just a couple more steps that I could recommend in the article below.

  • Macbook Pro Wont Start Up After Update

    Hey All,
I was in the middle of installing the most recent update for OSX when my computer froze completely. I shut it off by holding down the power button. Now, when I start it up, right after the apple, it goes to a screen with some script in the upper left hand corner, and a box in the middle with a picture of the power button telling me I need to restart. I've restarted it several times and it just keeps going back to that screen.
I have booted it up from the install DVD and run disk repairs and verifications, as well as checking the system profiler and utility, and nothing seems worng. I've tried starting it up by choosing to start up from the folder and it still didnt work.
If you've got any ideas, let me know. All your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I meant to say that the system would have been made unstable after the semi-complete update (if it was in the middle of replacing a crucial system file).
An archive and install would replace all system files, so wouldn't hurt anything. You might have to reinstall any system-intrusive applications (Palm Hotsync springs to mind, if you have that) but it will certainly fix system corruption, if that is your issue.
After the reinstall, if you encounter a complete freeze again, then I would definitely be suspicious of hardware. Possibly the original RAM, but it could be somewhere else in the system, such as the logic board. In those cases, you would have to go back to Apple for repair. (Your Macbook Pro, that is, not you.)

  • IMac wont start up after upgrade to Mavericks

I installed Mavericks as an upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 on my iMac and with in a half an hour of use my computer froze, I have tried all the normal rebooting techniques but my opening screen still has the vertical green stripes, even after using the disk repair/first aid utility, the iMac freezes without fully booting. the disk repair found no issues and says all is OK.

    Hello Tone56,
It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your computer after upgrading to Mavericks, and are seeing some graphical anomolies on startup. I recommend starting by resetting your PRAM with this article:
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222
Note: To print these instructions, open Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
    Then reset your SMC:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If the issue persists, try performing a Safe Boot then restart as normal to see if that will allow you to boot normally:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
    Starting up in Safe Mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Imac wont start up after new RAM, no chime, black screen

Hi, I've recently purchased a used 2010 iMac i3 that had faulty RAM.
This was confirmed as the issue when I tested a friend's original RAM from the same age iMac and the machine worked perfectly.
I then ordered 2x 4gb Crucial memory (upgrade from the 2x 2gb already installed) but kept getting kernal errors and RAM integrity check errors so the modules were returned and replaced by crucial.
Prior to returning, I attempted to reinstall a fresh copy of mavericks, but the hard drive failed to completely format, and then the OS install also failed so the machine currently now has no operating system. However before returning the ram the machine would boot up and connect to the internet to attempt to download the OS again.
The replacements have now arrived, but after installing the machine won't even boot. First attempt to start there is a drive noise, and the fans run, but no chime and a black screen. If I force shutdown and try again the drive noise happens twice and the fans run, but the same outcome.
If I remove the RAM I still get the single bleep, and once of all of the times I've removed and reseated the RAM I've had a triple beep integrity check fail.
Any help would be massively appreciated. Lost now as to whether the issue is with crucials RAM or the iMac itself.
    Thanks

Do you still have the old ram? Was orig sticks of ram bad? What happens if you put only one stick of the orig ram back in ?

  • Ipad wont start even after reset

My Ipad fell down.  When I tried to reset using the combination button press, apple logo wont appear. How do I restore? I plugged to my PC laptop and run diagnostics, synch went well. However, it still wont startup and screen is still blank. Please assist.

Try plugging the iPad into the wall adpater for about 10 minutes. If it doesn't startup after that, it'll need to be repaired.

What changed since last time you launched aperture?
Try this first to isolate the issue to your library or your system
    1) hold down the option key while launching aperture. When prompted choose create new library. Just create it on your desktop or something so you can get rid of it later. If goes will and aperture starts with a blank library quit aperture and do the same thing but navigate back to your original library with choose library and go to step two.
2)If it still crashes with your real library hold down option and command while launching Aperture and choose rebuild library and see if that helps.
