FCP X and Lion 10.7.4 - better?

I have read comments that suggest 10.7.4, released yesterday, has improvements on the memory management issue that has caused many of us so much grief with FCP X.
I have not had the chance to push it hard yet and, truth be told, since FCP X 10.0.4 I haven't had issues, but also haven't been doing any heavy duty work on it.
I would like to hear how this has worked out for you guys.

I have that feeling to, but can not explain it further. I have never had any crashes or spinning wheels with previous versions, but now I can see that FCPX uses even less memory than before almost never over 4 GB, and that actually worries me that the program will not eat more of my 10 GB.

  • FCP 7 and Lion reconnecting problems

I still haven't heard any comment from Apple on this.  I feel caught in the middle here, as an editor.  I had to get Avid Media Composer 6 because everyone I work for seems to be running away from Apple now that they've released FCPX.  To install the latest version of Media Composer, I had to upgrade to Lion.  I was told FCP7 would still work on Lion but I'm having all sorts of issues, beginning with problems reconnecting media.
Does anyone know if Apple is going to release some fixes for Studio 3 so it does work with Lion as advertised.  Apple is behaving strangely, or really, poorly these days.  It's one thing to leave old apps and hardware behind as you move forward, but when you start leaving your customers in bad situations, that's not good.  Please Apple.  Communicate with us on this.  I'm shocked really.  I understood FCP7 had about a 50% marketshare.  Why drop that ball?
I don't like Lion that much so far either.  Not happy.

Did you do a clean installation of Lion or did you install it over your existing OSX 10.6 and all your apps?
If you did an overwrite install, you may be dealing with all the problems you had in 10.6 but didn't really know about because they had not risen to the level of noticable. Upgrading an OS can break these incipient issues.
A number of people are running FCS3 on 10.7 without a host of issues.
My suggestion (painful as it may sound) is to get a new hard drive for your MacPro and do a clean installation of 10.7 on it then install FCS and your other apps from the original disks. My guess is a number of issues will be cleaned up.
    Good luck.

  • FCP 7 and FCP-X on same partition:  what problems are caused?

I'm trying to figure out if the performance issues I'm having with FCP-X can be remedied, or if the problem is just buggy software.  Apparently, even a newer, faster, more powerful Mac is not the answer, as I read complaints from people with new, suped-up Mac Pros who say the software slows to a crawl.  Sounds familiar to me, but I'm on iMacs and a MacBook Pro -- all my Macs are 3-4 years old, and are from that Core 2 Duo era, not Quad Core processors.  All my Macs are maxed out at 4 GB or RAM.  So I'm certain new machines are in my future.  But judging from what some people say about their newer, faster machines, I'm not entirely convinced that it would solve the problem I'm having with FCP-X.
There are numerous threads here reporting sluggish performance (perpetual spinning beach balls) relating to a memory leak or a problem relating to FCP-X's usage of memory (some say it happens worse in Lion).  Is that the problem?  And if it is, why hasn't Apple addressed it?
Then there is this matter of having FCP-7 (FCP Studio) and FCP-X installed on the same partition.  Apple's "Best Practices" article clearly states that it's best to have the two applications installed on separate partitions.  Only problem (for me) is, I already had FCP-7 installed on the primary partition.  When I purchased FCP-X (the day it first became available), I hadn't read that article, so naturally, the software got installed...you guessed it...on the primary partition.  And yes, I could uninstall FCP-7 (FCP Studio), create a new partition, and then re-install it.  But I remember how long it took to install FCP Studio (about 4 hours, as I recall), so I've put off the ordeal of heading down that road.
    So I'm wondering.......
What problems are known to occur as a result of having FCP-7 and FCP-X installed on the same partition?  Would my sluggish performance be related to this?  Or would going to the trouble of uninstalling FCP-7, re-partitioning, then re-installing FCP-7 (FCP Studio) into its own play space, only be a waste of time?
What evidence is there that this co-install is the culprit causing sluggish performance?
What ARE the problems that the co-install causes?  I've never heard anyone address this specifically.

When FCP X first came out, Apple recommended keeping FCS 3 on a separate partition, so I did that.
Recently I did a clean reinstall or Lion and installed FCS 3 as normal, followed by FCP X 10.0.3.
During the FCP X install, FCP 7 was moved to a new folder called Final Cut Studio.
'Studio' and FCP X now work happily on the same partition - but I have not tried opening both at the same time!
Just now, both applications are the most stable they have ever been.
These are my standard tips for improving performance:
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
    Other ways to improve performance:
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Contrary to what Ian said above, the biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • FCP 7 and Matrox MX02 mini has bad audio playback

This problem has been frustrating me for months.
I have FCP setup to output video and audio via my marox MX02 mini. The mini is hooked up to HDMI and component, and RCA audio.
When playing back on the timeline in FCP the audio stutters, echos and drops out.
I've been bugging them at the Matrox forum, and each new update that comes out claims to fix the problem, and it gets a little better, but honestly it is still nowhere near satisfactory.
It's worst when stepping 1 frame at a time or scrubbing thru footage.
Does anyone else experience this problem? Am I doing something wrong?

What drivers are you running? What footage type are you working with? Format, frame rate...
    Thanks,
    Shane

  • Anybody experience with FCP X and Macbook pro 15inch 2.2?

My old mid 2009 macbook harddrive died on me today, and I'm thinking to upgrade. Sell the old one and buy the new 2011 2.2. The old one was slow in rendering and had lots and lots and lots of spinning beachballs. Was I pushing it too hard? Don't know, but it was horrible. I lost so much time.
Anyway, does anybody have this combo fcp x and the new 15inch macbook pro with the 1gig card and what are your findings??
    Thanks
    Peter

I've got a 2011/2.2/8GB/6750 running FCPX. Once I troubleshooted my external HDs (a Drobo that was nearly full with Time Machine backups was slowing down the entire Firewire bus) things run a lot better. I'm currently storing video on a Promise Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt RAID and the entire system is pretty snappy. The only slowdowns are:
    1. clips, events, and projects on slower hard drives can slow down launching the app and screen refreshes
    2. FCPX is still flakey. It will run great for a whole day and then will refuse to launch the next morning.
    3. exporting through Compressor is slow, particularly when I'm under deadline! 10 minute HD segments can take an hour or so. The Activity Monitor shows the CPUs maxed out, so I suspect that's the bottleneck. I've tried setting up distributed rendering but it doesn't work quite yet.
    4. FCPX can be a RAM hog, so if you're a rabid multi-tasker like me, prepare to beachball or change your wicked ways.
All in all, FCPX runs pretty well on my MBP. If video editing was my main line of business, I'd seriously consider a Mac Pro stuffed with RAM and as many cores as I can find. I might wait for a newer one with Thunderbolt though for a bit of future-proofing.
    Hope this helps...

  • FCP 7 and FCP X on Same Computer, Problems?

I am a user of FCP 7 and I want to start to learn how to use FCP X.
If I install FCP X on the same computer as I have FCP 7, will there be any conficts or issues?
    Thanks in Advance
Mac Pro 2.66 GHZ Quad -  Core Intel Xeon
    OS X Lion 10.7
    10 GB Ram

    Not really.
All FCS the apps get moved to a sub folder in Applications, so you will have to relink their dock icons to match the new location (delete the old ones and drag them in again). After you installed FCPX and want to run FCP7 for the first time, start and then quit Motion 4 first -- wierd, but that's the official Apple position.

  • Upload FCP Projects and Associated Media to a Production

    Hi,
This sounds very silly but I`m really disappointed and can`t figured out how to do it.
Is there a way to upload a *.fcp project and associate NOT ONLY the project but ALSO the Media that this project contains?
In other words, if I upload a FCP project and choose a Production to be associated the production is created but ONLY the FCP Project Asset is inside this production, not the whole medias.
A scan production (for the FCP file) also doesn`t work.
What works is uploading all media and associating to a production or do a Scan production into a directory with medias. But my FCP and Medias are in distinct places and a thought that FCP project could help me cleaning the Media directories (by uploading the project and after all medias are catalogued archiving them, so the rest in directories are useless).
    The work around would be:
1- to do a Scan Production in the Media files and after that uploading a FCP project associating with that Production, but as I`ve said I can`t just scan the entire Media as it`s very messy and with this way I could be guaranteed that my important assets are catalogued (and archived) and the left ones in the messy directories could be quick filtered to exclusion and cleaning without worries.
2- to upload a FCP and associate to a production and after that manually move fcp associated assets to this production (this almost impossible because the limitation of 200 assets per page).
Can some one propose a better way?
    Regards

No, you are correct, but unfortunately these are Elements (inside the FCP project) and not real Assets. So for instance, if you fill in the annotations on the Asset it will not show on the Elements (inside FCP projects) and vice-versa. You can`t do a lot of other things as well with elements as you can with assets.
So I would like to have a Production with all media created automatically when a FCP project is uploaded (or scanned).
    Regards

  • Xserve 2006 and Lion -- any issues

We just became aware that our old suite of 2006 Xserves cannot do Mountain Lion -- a bit of a surprise. We got these 4 years ago so then the deal we got seemed good.  So my quesiton which I cannot find a clear answer to is this:  Are there issues with Lion on these old Xserves we are missing.  I get this gut feeling from having run Lion on 4 of these for better part of year and now finding them failing  and having to reinstall -- corruption issues--- that as a transition from Snow Leopard to Moutain Lion that some issues may be the almost transition status of Lion that leads to Mt Lion.
Cany anyone provide information if we are going to have these  problems again?  Is trying to run more than Snow Leopard Server on the 2006 Xserves going to continue to have issues?  We had hoped to go to Moutain Lion which clearly is more robust and not with issues that Lion Server brought, but that is not going to work.  Our racks do not have room, nor do we have funds to buy some new Mac Pro Servers. And even the expense of 4 new mini servers and the need to get a HD rack to work with them rather than bays of  Xserves which we use as file servers is more than we had planned for in this years budget.
The ultimate question in having file servers for a mostly now Mac with a few specialized Windows 7 hard ware  (and ipads and iphones) end up being better on Snow Leopard?  One issue is that some of file servers have people running a few items on them, may be hard to also go back to Snow Leopard, but then we have tried to push these as archival file servers and do your work locally but the old habits of working on files on the servers still is hard to kill in  people who say well we have never done it that way.. argggg.
Any feedback on what we are trying to do would be very much appreciated before we go too much further down rabbit trail of keeping Lion going on these servers. 3 of the 4 have issues now, the ones that people do alot of file access on  -- maybe a problem with Lion and file servicess???
    Thanks in advance,
    Russ Jacobson

  • Can I re-mix audio by importing iMovie Project/Events to FCP X, and mixing in a pro studio?

This needs a little backstory: I edited a promo of Select Scenes from a doc that I shot on a Canon SF105 HD, doing a quick job on iMovie for my website. I did the best I could as both an amateur mixer and using consumer software. The audio "mix" is horrific, of course, and being old school film, I need something a whole lot better. It was suggested by a pro edit studio (& friend) that I might IMPORT the iMovie Project & Events library to FCP X, and using these "mix elements", they could use their system (probably AVID or a hybrid) to do a proper mix. They would then lay back the track to the picture. They don't use FCP X, but again, with separate sound tracks, they might be able to do  something of it. Am I dreaming?

If the project is in a recent version of iMovie you might be able to. Clean up the iMovie project of all extraneous transitions, effects, and titles, and any DRM audio. Download the trial version and give it a shot.

  • Forced to migrate to Icloud and Lion?

Why Apple customers accept being forced to migrate to Icloud and Lion (an OS with bad reviews) before the end of June when knowing that Mountain Lion will be available a few weeks later?

For the reviews on the App Store, people who have problems are the one's most likely to post. Millions of people out there didn't give their opinion. Lion has some problems like every other previous OS that came out and it's getting better with each new release. As others pointed out, SL was no different. I've read posts on every system that came out about how bad it was and they wanted to go back to the previous version.
For the loss of the MMe features, I can't do anything about that. I've never used MMe, but the only thing I see that's being lost is iDisk. Most unfortunate for those who use it, but surely it can be replaced. iCloud does provide other features that MMe didn't have.
Other than iDisk, you can still keep your .me address with SL and continue to use it. You don't have to transfer to Lion. The .me is IMAP and will sync between all devices.
For your question, I've never used iDisk personally. If you state exactly what your question and concerns are, someone else may have an answer.

  • *** G4 running FCP 6 and Leopard and importing HDV

This computer doesn't seem to be able to handle HDV so I'm wondering if any amount of Ram increase would help my situation. During HDV capture it just constantly stutters and can't properly capture the clips. Here are the computer specs:
    G4 tower (last one b4 the G5's)
    1.25gb RAM
    Dual 1Ghz PowerPC G4
Seems to me that it should still be able to handle it, no?

Oh, I can be a waaaaaay bigger pain than this, trust me on this one.
You asked for an opinion and I gave you an opinion, although in my case it's a fact, that you didn't want to hear.
Before my Mac Pro arrived this summer, I loaded a new harddrive with Tiger and FC Studio 2 in my Quicksilver 1 gig Dualie. I have the top of the line ATI card for the 2x/4x agp lanes as well in my trusty G4. (I think you have the MDD version) Guess what, Motion 3 would launch and that's about it, FCP would LAUGH IN MY FACE and tell me I needed better iron than what I had, DVD SP would launch and sit there and Color couldn't be bothered to even render an error message.
So try it but don't take umbrage when folks tell you what you don't want to hear. Path of least resistance is a Mac Pro. Sorry.
    Good luck.

  • FCP Audio and firewire at the same time?

Hi, I was pondering an idea that made me wonder this. I hope it is not a stupid one but I am sure I get an "E" for effort or a "god bless his little heart".
I will be moving my mac to a studio to work on a instructional DVD. I will be capturing from one main camera real time via firewire, I have the option of going out of the console via optical for the instrument tracks and vocal. ( whether I can only have one active audio inputed track or two doesn't matter but would like two).
This audio will be pro quality and I just want to use FCP.
I am only interested in the video without the camera audio.
I want to capture the camera video(firewire) and studio(optical) audio at the same time.
If not it's no big deal I can route audio to the 3.5mm audio mike input on the camera.
I am running FCP studio and have no budget and a chance to play. I am on a barter project. I was just hoping for a time saver and down the road I would be happy to know my limitations as I may move into the studio and "sync" up.
I have another camera that I will add later for my Picture in picture effects.

Hey X thanks for your reply
Well I talked to my friend at the studio. and we are still saving the audio on digital hard drive in case this doesn't work. ( Which I know is the right way). I only asked the question because I apparently am lazy and want to spend as little time trying to sinc up later. My solution was to be fluid. In the end the project would be available for download tutorials/lessons from his web page, which will be a whole other delivery question as I am working through the third party whose project this belongs. Given my information I am trying to cover a lot of possibles to create something better than he is asking ( A Pro Job )
I was hoping to cross from "hobbiest" to "entry pro" here. Most I get to play with are relatives videos and stills. I have two completed two paying jobs in which I have purchased the mac and Final Cut Studio.
This is more of a controlled environment and wanted to utilize as many choices as possible.
The camera I am using (Panasonic PV-DV951-K) doesn't record to tape properly or doesn't replay what was recorded on tape. My solution was to go directly to FCP via firewire as a live realtime capture.
I opted for this as having no choice and in the end. Given the amount of lessons that would have to be captured and the equipment I have conjured up I think it is my best solution.
Again I thank you X and I meant no disrespect as to who is clueless. I am the one asking the questions. I don't always ask questions until I have searched the forum for an answer and appreciate those of you who take the time to answer "patiently".
Also I am an electronic technician and in a pinch devour troubleshooting to the point of magiverism.
When this is all over and I am enjoying a pint and reaping what few dollars this creates, I'd like to buy you all a beer. Then I'll plan the next hairbrain project.

  • PCU usage difference with FCP 6 and FCPX

So can anyone help me understand this...
I export a ten minute video in FCP 6.0.6 and it takes 3 minutes...using 3 % of PCU
Then I export same 10 minute video from FCPX and it takes about 12 minutes and uses 63% of the CPU....
this issue is driving me crazy...why do things take longer with FCPX...is there something in the software that using the computers hardware differently than final cut studio does????

If you read back through some threads (not far) you will see that FCPX and Motion 5 don't work the same as FCP6 and Motion 3 - i.e. they do not round-trip.
If round-tripping is essential in your workflow stick with FCP 6 and Motion 3.
If you want to use Motion 5 they can be installed alongside each other, just follow the guidelines for better working - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4722?viewlocale=en_US
You can output movies from Motion 5 with transparency and just import into FCP.

  • Install order for FCS, FCPX and Lion

    Hi,
I currently have FCS3 and Snow Leopard installed on my iMac with all updates. I want to install FCPX and LION on the same partition as FCS3 so I can still use the other apps.
Should I install FCPX or Lion first, or does it not matter?
    Many thanks

OK - I have both Lion and FCPX on my iMac and it works.  I thought you also wanted to keep Snow Leopard as well.  I use Super Duper to back up my two Macs.  I think I should also have kept a backup coy of Snow Leopard on one back up copy - as I  backed each up AFTER upgrading to LIon!  So far though I really like Lion!  All my problems have been with FCPX.  I am not sure if it worked better on Snow leopard than it does now on LIon.  Others can tell you that
Incidentally, the best advice I have seen is that whilst FCX is on your iMac drive you should not keep all your import files on the internal drive.  I am keeping mine on a 1 TB Firewire 800 Western Digital.  This seems to work fine so far!
