  • FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!

I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
    Wade

    Hi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there.

  • Anyone get FCP to 'export using compressor' without it crashing?

As per the subject lads, for a long while now FCP 6 produces the spinning beachball and hangs indefinitely when I try to 'export using compressor'. I have to export using QT, then import the QT file into compressor where it works from time to time ( I think it's a really buggy app ).
Done all the usual things to try to fix it including full updates etc but it still crashes FCP. It would be handy to get it to work so if anyone has an answer I'd be grateful.
    Peter

Yep trashed the lot, but I do use instances. I've come across some folks who allow compressor to employ all the available instances but expect FCP to function in the background and they experience hangs and crashes. I have allowed compressor to use half my instances and it fairly whizzes through the work when dealing with self-contained QT movies ( when it isn't playing up ) but I didn't think that using half my instances would still crash FCp when exporting directly off the timeline.
I'll disable instances and see if that cures it. If it does then it's actually worth abandoning 'export using compressor' off the timeline when I know Compressor works so quickly with self-contained QT movies and instances.

  • Can FCP X export .m4v directly?

Can FCP X export .m4v directly without usig Compressor?

    Looks like .m4v to me.
iPad is the same. Do not use the Mac & PC compatible option. That makes .mp4 for PC compatibility.

  • Please help. Color Crashes on "Send to FCP" or export XML

This error has just started happening and it's driving me nuts.
I'm using FCS3 and I've got all the latest updates.
I'm grading 60 sec commercials (source is XDCAM EX HD 1080p and I'm rendering in Pro Res HQ 1080)
I did 3 this morning with no probs.
Now on my 4th; Color "quits unexpectedly" every time i try to export XML or send to FCP.
    I haven't done anything differently.
After trying and crashing 3 times, I restarted the computer and tried again.
    No change.
I thought that maybe the file is corrupt so I started a new project and did the grade again.
    Still no joy.
Anybody got any ideas what's wrong?
    Thanks
    Hills

I also am having this problem. I am running a Macbook Pro with 2 gigs of ram, OS 10.6.2, FCP 7.01 and Color 1.5. I am working on a film which is is in small 4-5 minute segments with nothing fancy, DVCPRO HD-1080i60. There are some B/W tiff files at the start of each segment. They are all rendered fine. Color crashes the second I try to send back to FCP or export XML. The error code message is:

  • FCP cant export any video

    Hi,
I have been dealing with editing a feature film for some months now. I've been able to easily export the sequence until now. I have tried a few things. I exported a self-contained quicktime movie, I used compressor in FCP to export it that way and none work. I even erased my hard drive, and installed all the software again. With no luck. I use to have an aja kona LSe card connected to an external monitor, but that stopped working about a week ago. When the problems started happening. I am trying to play with that and see if I can get it to work again, but no luck. When the project is open now FCP in general has become very slow. My settings now for FCP are the standard DV-NTSC anamorphic set-up. Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

You likely have some media that's corrupt and that is what is stopping the export. The LHe card is another thing altogether.... you might call AJA about that. Try moving your media to another folder on the same hard drive, then open the project and reconnect the media files a few at a time until you see a crash or warning, or something that lets you know that the media needs recapturing. If this fails to fix you up, I'd suggest a clean erase and install of OS X, then FCS on top of that on a fresh startup disk. If you've not done this in a while, it's likely time anyway to do it.

  • FCP keeps exporting progressive ProRes files as Interlaced

I have captured a clip from tape using 1920x1080 25i setting on Kona3 card with the ProRes HQ codec. The tape is progressive but there was no option to capture 1080 25psf so I was informed that 1080 25i would be fine.
FCP states the clip has Upper field dominance so I set it to 'None' and dropped it into a 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 25fps sequence.
The Sequence timeline settings were 'None' and the Prores Advanced codec options the Interlaced option was also unchecked. All fine, exported the clip based on Current Settings to render a new (progressive) Quicktime.
I then reimported the rendered clip it back into FCP and it stated that the rendered clip is still Upper Field dominant. Short of reencoding through Compressor (v slow and creates a second generation encoded file) I cannot seem to get FCP to export this material as progressive.
Is there a way I can just change the Field Dominance flag/tag of the clip within FCP or another application to "None" withut any rerenders/encodes?
Any help gladly appreciated as this is becoming a real mystery/headache!

    Jerome Colas wrote:
If I manually change it for every source file to progressive (which should be done automaticallt by Compressor), I then get a progressive output.
But that defeats Compressor's purpose and is a source for error.
    Jérôme.
I'm not sure what this means.
And I wonder whether it's a metadata thing and, and while disconcerting, whether it will have any practical effect on your project.
As a test try a single clip. Turn on frame controls with output fields set to progressive. See if it is now identified correctly. If it is bring that into FCP and compare against that against the one that is identified as interlaced.
If Frame Controls doesn't work, then I think I would use MPEG Streamclip. It's fast and has a very good batch feature.
    Good luck.

  • FCP to Compressor (can I still work in FCP will export is happening)?

This may be a dumb question.  Usually I export from FCP to a master ProRes, THEN bring the ProRes into Compressor to make various formats.  And I know I can continue working in FCP while this is happening.
I want to short circuit that process on this job, go straight out of FCP to Compressor.  Which works fine.  I'm wondering, once I've started the batch process in Compressor, can I be working with FCP while it is exporting THROUGH Compressor?
Or am I going to crash the whole process?
    All ears,
    Ben

    Please excuse typo in question:
FCP to Compressor (can I still work in FCP WHILE export is happening)?
    S'cuse me.

  • FCP not exporting or sharing

My son upgrade our mac 10.1.1 9 Mavericks a month ago and upgraded FCP X....and now I can't burn DVDs, export or share.  The only thing i can do is export a file as a 'fcpxml' which won't open with anything but FCP X. Can someone please help me? Thanks!

So your copy of FCPX is version10.1?
Are the Share options unavailable or does it hang or crash when you export?

  • Bad Jitter in FCP 6 Export from 4.5 Source Project

    Hi Folks,
I took a project created in FCP 4.5 on my old Power PC running X.3.9 and opened it in FCP 6.0 on our new Dual-Core Intel machine running X.4.11. (This, of course, required "updating" the project into 6.0 - I did a Save As to retain the integrity of the original project.)
All looked fine & I did what I always do - exported the final sequence using QT conversion as an uncompressed .mov file (never mind why - this is what works for us). Same settings used as always (as much as possible in 6.0). The resulting MOV shows an absolutely horrible jagged jitter (much worse than just an interlacing problem) around any area of movement at all.
This MOV gets taken into BitVice for MPEG-2 compression & encoding. The resulting MPEG-2 shows the jitter even more dramatically than in the MOV, but it's definitely showing up first in the MOV.
Sure seems like whatever it is occurred in moving the project from 4.5 to 6.0. Could that be? We have literally hundreds more projects that are going to have to go through this same workflow, so this has to get resolved. What could I be doing wrong? A setting somewhere? A bug? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Cheers!
    Old machine:
Dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5

Jim, Hanumang - Thanks very much for your replies. I tried both suggestions (Export as Self-Contained QT movie and Applying the Shift Fields Filter) and unfortunately neither produced a result any different than what I was getting. I did do side-by-side comparisons.
Let me try to explain more about what I'm doing and perhaps a light bulb will go off. Thanks again for any help with this.
We take ten year old high-8 tapes and capture them using an old Aurora Igniter X card (using the Aurora Online MJPEG-A codec), into a Power Mac G5 running Panther and FCP 4.5. Our capture settings are: 720 X 480 NTSC DV (3:2). Sequence Settings: same frame size & aspect ratio, Pixel Aspect Ration is NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV, Upper (Odd) Field Dominance. Everything, everywhere is set at upper field dominance.
I export this footage our of FCP for a variety of different purposes. I do it using QT conversion because that allows control over resizing, quality, color, codec, etc. It would be hard to imagine that this is where the problem is being introduced since it has worked for me flawlessly for years in FCP 4.5. Not ruling it out, just saying.
When I export using QT conversion, I select "None" as the compressor - when I'm in my DVD workflow. I dig what you're saying about that being a misleading name for a lossy codec, but I've been very happy with the results. I always set Upper Field First in these export settings as well.
Just to be clear, this is a workflow that has never produced this particular problem (horrible jaggy edges around everything that moves) coming out of FCP 4.5. This only started coming out of a project begun in 4.5 and converted into FCP 6.0. It's hard not to focus on the only factor that changed (converting the old project to the new FCP version). I really hoped Hanumang was on the right track with the Shift Fields, but alas.
Any thoughts - even on which direction to think in - would be greatly appreciated. As mentioned, we are going to be bringing many projects captured in 4.5 into 6.0. If we can't resolve this, it's going to be grim. Thanks, all! Cheers.
P.S. We love BitVice. They have also given us incredibly personal support. Compressor, I'm sure, is a great program, but I have always found it next to worthless for my needs.

  • FCP X Export Problem

When I export my timeline by using Share / Export Using Compressor Settings and then use Apple Pro Res 4444 to generate a Quick Tiime movie, I get a thin vertical line on the right side of my image. See attached. I would prefer not to reimport the movie and crop to remove the white line. Am I missing a setting? When I run the timeline in Viewer, there is no problem. In this view the white line is barely visible but when the image is full screen in Quick Time 7, it is very noticeable.

Here is a smaller screen save file. Hope you can see the white line.
The original media was created in an animation program called Tune Boom Animate. The saved file was a 800 x 600 NTSC file at 30 frames / second. It was exported as a Quick Time movie using the Animation codec. The export out of FCP X was done via 4444 after multiple tests of different codecs. The color produced by 4444 was more accurate and the file lossless (at least I think so). The final video will be played on a large screen HD TV as the scrim / backdrop / commentary behind live puppets. The video will be played directly off a MacBook Pro. If there is a better method of producing the QuickTime file, I'd really like to know.
    Thanks.

  • Avid to FCP DV export

A question for my learned colleagues... I have a chance to create a tapeless workflow based on exporting a finished PAL DV25 420 sequence from Avid Xpress Pro and using that somehow in FCP, but the absolute proviso is not to take a quality hit on the way. The typical Avid plethora of confusing choices for QT export surely means they can't all export the media content in a native state...
I know Avid DV codecs reverse the field order of DV to match standard 601 (is that how they mix res's in timelines?) so some wrapper translation is inevitable. But I'd like to find a way to export the "essence" (to borrow a term from MXF) without modification. Most people suggest DVStream as the best "rewrap", but DVStream, though native to iMovie, has never been the best choice for FCP...
If it all gets too hard I'll go via tape but a faster-than-real-time picture export is tempting, especially as we need one for ProTools. Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks!

might be worth installing Avid's DV codec onto your FCP Mac, and then take a look at Shane's tip for Editing non-standard FCP codecs

  • FCP 6 - Exporting Quicktime MOV distorts audio (clipping), plays fine in FC

I've just finished a project and have exported my finished video to a Quicktime file, using the same settings as my original capture (HDV 1080i50). However, when I do so, the audio in the exported file is clipped quite horribly, and makes it hard to make sense of what is going on because of it.
I have several sound files that have been amplified +9dB in the project, and was originally worried about clipping, but they play back absolutely fine in Final Cut, with no distortion at all.
Any ideas on how to remove this clipping on export? If I have to reduce the sound level on my clips, is there a way to do it via batch? I've got heaps of keyframes controlling volume, it would be an absolute pain to do manually.

Keep your audio peaks between -12 and -6 inside FCP. Never, ever clip the audio. Use of some compression and/or limiting - if done correctly - will help you control your levels: Putting a lid on loud stuff and bringing up the level of low stuff. And does a better job of level control than manually riding-gain with a fader or inserting audio level keyframes.
    Compressors will help you.
Search the web for tutorials on how to use 'em and you'll never look back.

  • FCP X EXPORT GLITCH

Hello everyone. I've literally been through all forums on the net about this problem but couldn't find a solution.
    Very Quickly
    Specs
Mac Book Pro 4GB Ram 2.3GHZ i5 Processor.
Using FCP X  (would be loving it if it weren't for this glitch)
Footage being used is 1080P 24FPS coming from a Canon T2i.
Heres a visual link to my problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HGXk3_iQ6U
Basically my video stutters at frame and plays it in a loop, while the audio plays fine.  I upload the same project you see in the link DIRECTLY to Youtube from FCP X, the video is perfect, when I export it as a h.264, it gives me the problem you see in the link. This is how its suppose to play:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCyn23hFJWo
    I'd appreciate some help, thanks.

I've taken some screenshots as requested of some of the exported files. Funny enough when I exported through the Media Browser option in the Share menu and it worked. Didn't have as much control over the export settings but it sorted the first frame glitch. That's the first time it's happened so hopefully it won't happen again. Here's the screens if anyone can figure out exactly what happened.
Here's the one that worked in the end after being exported through the media browser with the Apple TV settings

  • Will FCP X export to Flash?

I've been an Adobe Premiere user all this time and am finally ready to throw in the towel and losing about 6 hrs worth of work due to a corruption with my project file.
With the new release of FCP X, I need to verify whether it (or Compressor) can export to flash video. I checked all of the specs but didn't see it listed. Can anyone verify this?
    Thanks!
    Brian

FCP X will not export as flv. But you can always export as h.264 wich has been part of Flash for a while now.
