FCP X on Older Laptops

I have an older MacBook Pro that has a 32-bit Intel Core Duo processor. Will FCP X not run on this Mac? Or will it run with limited functionality?

It wont let you download it at all, just tried on mine.

Transferring photos from new Macbook Pro to older laptop

My new MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and 800 Firewire and I need to back up 26 GB of photos to an older laptop MacBook with Firewire 400. I dont want to do it over the network which is too slow for this much info. Any suggestions?

I do this kind of thing quite a bit, and it all depends on what kind of storage options that are available.
1. I have several pen drives, a few 16gb in storage, that I use to transfer data from one computer to another. If you have 26gb of music, the transfer should't be too long.
2. I also own a few Seagate portable drives, which are great for transferring data. It's also fairly fast. I use a USB to USB2 cable to do the transfer; my cable came with the drive.
One easy way to figure out which cable you need would be to visit your Apple Store; they should be able to tell which cable to purchase.

Cannot Upgrade IE 8 to IE 11 on older laptop

I have quite a few older laptops most are Dell Inspiron D600's which has worked fine with Windows 7 and upgrading to IE 11. I have an older Dell Inspiron 9100 that is working with Windows 7 just fine, but won't update to IE 11. It gets so far
in the update and dies saying that it is trying to get an update from Microsoft at this URL:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkId=299206. I cannot find an update with that number. I need help updating this system so that my daughter can get her homework done.

Adobe Reader X can only save reader-enabled forms. Adobe Reader XI can save all forms.

Apple has a couple of published but still somewhat hidden links to various versions that represent the last version that runs on particular platforms. The Roger Wilmut1's link to 9.1.1 is one of them, for Tiger OS.
However, there are many, many versions still available on servers (at least the last time I tried) but the URLs are not easy to find (I have a list of about 20 versions). They are still on the official Apple server, just no links pointing to them from Apple's pages.
Even though I have Tiger OS I still use iTunes 7.5 Most of the bells and whistles in the newer versions seemed to be for marketing the iTunes Store (which has nothing I want and I prefer the CD at the same price) and garnering data about your music tastes (Genius) but the Store won't work with iTunes 9 anyway. If you're interested in a particular version let me know, otherwise 9.1.1 is the latest for Tiger.

Cannot install on older laptop

I am trying to install arch on my older laptop but I keep getting an error when I boot the arch disk and it says
Buffer I/O error, dev sr0
I was able to install the system once but I got messages that said that the hard-disk is read only.
The laptop is an HP with a Duron (900mhz) processor with 1028 ram.

So I have to put windows on the laptop and then try to install Arch? I will see if I can do the same from linux..
I was thinking though... after a bit of searching for the type of error that I am getting:
I/O error, /dev/fd0
I/O error, /dev/sr0
(the first error is for a floppy and the second is for the cdrom) that other people are getting them in Arch but apparently I am the only one to be getting them when the live disk is first booted because everyone else seems to already have a working system when it happens to them. The other thing is that the same error happens on any of the three systems that I have tried it on here except for VirtualBox. It also happens whether I try to install from a cd or from usb. Debian and Ubuntu install just fine on these systems also, so I am thinking that it is either an Arch problem or some boot parameter that is automatic in those other distros. but is manual in Arch. What do you folks think?

Leopard on older Laptop Macs

Would anyone recommend installing Leopard (with Tiger archived for older applications) on an older laptop computer or would this result in a slower running computer? Thanks for any ideas

How old? As long as it meets the system requirements, 10.5 may even run faster than 10.4. The system does take a bit more RAM than 10.4. AFA, archiving for use of older apps, it depends how old... 10.5 will not run Classic but it will run many older apps. I'm running apps like MS Office X, Acrobat Pro 6 and Toast 6 on 10.5.

I saw Apple's post about how laptops from 2011 and 2012
can have the power nap feature, so does this mean older laptops (EX: my Macbook from 2010)
will not support the power nap feature ???

Debian/ubuntu user: Arch on older laptop?

I'm not new to Linux, having been running it full time at home for 5 or 6 years. At the same time, I don't really consider myself a power user: I'm a computer hobbyist and don't work in the computer or tech job sector. I started off with Mandrake, Redhat, and Slack variants, but moved to Debian once I figured out and could appreciate the packaging system. Then, I went with Ubuntu once it came out.
I've looked at Arch over the years and wanted to try it out. One of the reasons it has appealed to me is because it seems better optimized for the hardware I'm using (usually older x86 stuff). Have I understood correctly about Arch being optimized for that sort of hardware? In any case, I will get an older laptop soon and this seems like it might be a great opportunity to give Arch a try.
The laptop is a Toshiba Portege with 300 Mhz Celeron CPU, 6GB HD, and 96 MB RAM. I thought about putting a barebones Ubuntu on it and sort of building up needed software from scratch (I've done the same several times over the years with both Debian and Ubuntu). But I really thing this system's resources are borderline for Ubuntu--even if it's a minimalist installation (lightweight WM, limited # of apps and running services, etc). Anyone disagree that this laptop might be a good target for an Arch installation?
One hitch with installing the OS on this laptop is that it has neither a CD nor a floppy drive. I would get around that in Debian/Ubuntu by simply removing the HD, sticking it in another system that does have a CD, doing a sort of base install, then moving the drive back into the laptop to finish up the installation over the 'net. I presume a similar tack could be taken with an Arch install, correct? Any particular tips given that installation strategy?
I think I'll close out this series of remarks on that note. If I actually go ahead with Arch I'll undoubtedly be posting more in this thread and on your forums. Responses will be appreciated.

The current ftp iso has been causing problems for some users, from what I've read on the forums (some issue with permission settings on the /tmp folder). Core ISO is a safe bet -- this is what I normally use. The only "problem" with the core iso, compared to the ftp iso, is that the ftp iso auto-configures network during installation and these settings are preserved in the installed version; the core iso simply puts some default values in the network configuration section of /etc/rc.conf -- not a big deal.
A general note -- a new set of isos is about to be released, it should be no more than a few days now... It shouldn't really make a difference, in the end, your system will be brought up to date on the first pacman -Syu in either case.

Installation of FCP on desktop and laptop ....

Guys this really isn't such a big deal and so sorry to be going over old ground here but before I install FCP on my laptop as well, can I just confirm Apple's ruling on this and am I right in thinking I don't register the software when installing it the second time on the laptop? (Makes it feel a bit like if I'd got the software illegally)

The MacBook and the iMac are obviously fine. Also, both computers cannot run the software on a network at the same time+.
Both my iMac and MacBook Pro are in the system so I don't understand why you can't be given two serial numbers (maybe identical accept for a -1 and -2 on the end of it ... or A and B or maybe DT and LT) so you can in fact run it at the same time should you wish. In fact on my first enquiry to an Apple consultant, he was under the impression this was the case as he said he had seen two serial numbers on the documentation but once I'd bought it I could see the two serial numbers were identical! You can't obviously be at home and at work at the same time but if I'm working on FCP in the morning, forget to log off, go to work and log on and then risk one or the other being bumped off and losing unsaved material.
This would happen very seldom but I still don't understand why this situation, even though you have paid top dollar for the software, is treated like your second installation is a big secret. I may have this totally wrong and have misinterpreted it all but I'd love to get someone's feedback.
By the way only had the software for a week and geez I'm lovin' it. So many hidden extras that you don't get in FCE. I wish though that I'd read somewhere the installation takes nearly 8 hours! 8.30pm to 3.45am in a deserted (and possibly haunted) workplace! Eeek!

Peter, I would think that it is painfully obvious that the license is intended to allow you to dual install on a personal desktop and personal laptop as a convenience so that you can use either but *not both* simultaneously. What is difficult to understand about that? If you need two instances for productivity reasons, meaning to run both simultaneously, then you should buy two licenses. If your concern is that you might simply forget to quit the version running at home on your laptop/desktop then don't worry about it. You won't be prevented from running the second copy unless you are on the same network subnet. Other than that you should just learn to save regularly (and turn auto save on too).

How to transfer FCP project on a laptop to a desktop

Hello,
I started to work on a project on my laptop. Now I'd like to transfer the project and all of the media files to my desktop to work on it there. What would be the best way to do it. Also if I wanted to work on the project later on my laptop how would I go about syncing it up to my laptop. Working with FCP version 5.1.4

First and foremost, both systems will need to be running the EXACT same version of FCP ... and preferably, the same version of QuickTime as well.
Next copy the project file and all media to an external FW drive, then unmount it and connect it to the other system. Move the project file to your boot drive on the destination system and the media files to wherever you store media files on that system (but NOT the boot drive).
When you want to migrate back to the first system, repeat above. But you may want to rename the project file when moving to something like "project v2' (for version 2).
You can also use Media Manager to make copies of the media files, but I've never trusted it much.

Older laptop connecting to Panasonic Viera using VGA to HDMI

I have an older Pavilion Tx1000 that I would like to hook up to my new Panasonic Viera TV. I don't have an hdmi port on my laptop, but I do have a vga to hdmi cable. When I hook it up, the tv says no signal. The video card in my computer is an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150. How do I get this to work?

Your computer must have an HD compatible video card in order to use an HDMI connector.
I would reccomend getting a VGA cable and use the VGA port on the TV instead.
You will find it still provides a very good picture.

WILL FCP 7 Recognize older camcorders like Panasonic PVGS120 for capturing?

I wanted to find out if FCP 7 has the ability to read all older camera models. If I can upgrade to FCP 7 (for under $300) and my old camera (Panasonic PVGS120) can be recognized by FCP software/drivers then I will not need to go out and buy a new HD camera just yet. Can anyone confirm this? The Panasonic PVGS120 was a gift and did not come with a driver for mac only PC/Windows. Right now I can not capture my footage onto my mac via fire wire & camera. I have to transfer my tapes to a friends HD camera to be able to import and capture my footage. If not I'll just have to break down and get a new HD camera for footage and importing, either way it's a win-win. PLEASE HELP!!

I own this camera, I just did a test and it works fine with the newest FCS.
