FCP X Time Line & preview sticking and juddering

I wonder if any one could help me please. I used to run Final Cut Pro 10.0.8 on Mountain Lion then on Mavericks all working OK. I then went on to Yosemite and upgraded to the latest version of FCP X (10.1.4). When I play the timeline, it keeps "sticking" and "juddering" and in preview. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how I might resolve it would be appreciated - it's driving me mad!!!

Thanks for your reply. There are only about 12 cuts in the library (all about 20 seconds long) and they are being played off a brand new 1 TB hard drive and connecting via Fire Wire 800. The cuts all play happily in Quick Time Movie.

In the FCP Browser, click on the source clip that is showing up sized incorrectly to select it. Once it is selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties here, or take a screen shot of the item properties and post the screen shot here.
Next, click anywhere in your sequence timeline and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings or take a screen shot of the sequence settings and post that screen shot here.

Can anyone help. I need to reuse my SDHC cards and transfer footage from an ongoing profect to a hard drive. Can i edit from the Hard drive or am I better transferring info striaight from camera to time line

Hi I am using a JVC GY-HM100 camera which is meant to work well with final cut pro. I have an ongoing project but need to save money and resuse the SDHC cards that are currently full of footage.
Would I be better off transferring the footage straight to the time line (as rumour has it you can do this with this camera) or store the footage on a hard drive and edit it later without risk of losing the footage.

Here's some more info for you:
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:

Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:

Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
Check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system. Do NOT import any of the settings etc from the old account - simply use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended - but remember, if you reinstall the system, and then use Migration Assistant (or anything else) to import all your old settings etc etc, you may well be importing the cause of the conflict in the first place.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less (about half that for Multicam). If you have a long project, work on short sections, make them into Compound Clips and then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.

Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

In the time line, cutaways and titles are supposed to be linked on the top side of movie clips in the time line window. I don't know what I did, but now they are linked to the bottom side. How do I get them up to the top where they belong?

I'm working on a movie in FCP and using cutaways and titles in many places in the timeline. While working on a movie 2 days ago, and I don't know what I did, all the cutaways and titles are now linked to the movie clips from below rather than above. When I "grab" them and drag them up to the top-side, as soon as I "release", they go back down. Along the menu bar, I've check the "view", "modify", "clips", etc., looking for any thing that might refer to appearance of the time line. What must I do to get the cutaways and titles back on top where they belong? The audio clips remained properly-linked to the time line and play properly. The cutaways and titles can be seen but do not play.

Hello All,
The last time I used iMovie was about a month ago. I have successfully imported and edited many projects in the past year. I just imported footage from a Mini DV camcorder as I always have in the past. When I click on video to drag to the time line, as soon as I move the mouse pointer, the video thumbnail becomes ghosted and I do not see the thumbnail or green + symbol when dragging. I even moved the mouse pointer to the timeline anyway and released the mouse click and nothing happened. I even tried dragging image files and MOV files from the Finder to the iMovie interface and that would not work either.
What is preventing me from dragging?

Also, after the video thumbnail is ghosted, if I click on the ghosted thumbnail the thumbnail image does not appear in the preview window. Instead, the preview window turns black.
Also, if I double click the ghosted thumbnail I do not get the Clip info dialog. It's as if the clip no longer exists, but I can see it's ghosted thumbnail.
Also, I showed my wife the problem and she just told me she was using iMovie 2 days ago with no problem.

Length of Burn longer than shown on time line in FCP 4.5 HD

Have an 8 minute-30 second movie. When I send it to compressor then to DVD Pro 3 it burns at 41 minutes and 15 seconds and takes about 3 and a 1/2 hours
to burn. The time line in FCP 4.5 HD shows ,as stated 8' 30". When the disc is played back it goes to black after the 8'30" movie but continues to run out to 41'-15". Help is greatly appreciated.

Check your FCP timeline and that you do not have any stray clips past the 8:30
Or just mark 8:30 as out point, export as self contained using In/Out points and encode that - but I would bet there is something in the timeline in FCP

Time line in FCP X 10.1 is really slow

Everything in FCP X 10.1 is working well... except the time line. When scrolling left, right or up and down I get the color wheel and it moves way after I've scrolled. Is any one having this problem. I've just reinstalled it and got rid of the preference files but to no avail. You're help would be greatly appreciated. If there is nothing that can be done... then Apple has to fix this situation. I am having the same exact problem. Scrolling right or left is "glitchy" if you will. Render times are excellent. I've tried Original, Optimized and Proxy. Turned of Background rendering. Nothing helps. Very weird. 16gb of ram, checked activity monitor and its only using about 8 of the 16. What's happening?

Use Windows Explorer to open the folder containing your catalog. The normal location is Pictures\Lightroom. Locate a folder with the extension .lrdata and delete that folder. Then you should be able to start Lightroom again, and Lightroom will begin building and new previews folder. Do not delete anything else.

Delete the preview cache using your operating system. It is a folder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA. Do not delete the Lightroom catalog, which ends with .LRCAT

You don't delete a file, you have to delete a folder. Is that what you did?
If you deleted the folder specified above, and you still get the message, then it's the wrong folder. Use your operating system's search function and find ALL folders on ALL disks whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA, delete each one found, and then try opening Lightroom.
