FCP X to DVDSP 4

I'm a bit mixed up.
In FCP X, my project is 1920 x 1080 and I exported it as ProRes422.
I want to make a DVD with this 2-minute project using DVD Studio Pro 4.
What are the DVDSP4 settings to make this 16:9 project play correctly on a 16:9 monitor/TV?
It's not for BluRay. It needs to play from a regular DVD player.
Thanks.

Open Preferences>General. Set to 16:9 Letterbox. (Ignore the HD DVD section.)
If you're going to have DVDSP do the encoding, open Encoding in the MEG2 SD tab select 16:9.
Using Compressor for the encode is the preferred workflow.
Good luck.

  • Importing FCP Movie Causes DVDSP to Freeze

I have captured video from a Canon Mini DV GL2 to FCP. When I export the video using ANY format, DVC Video Pro, using current settings, or changing them, making self contained, recompressing all video or not... nothing matters... DVDSP locks up. The movie icon will turn black after I select the file to import as an asset, and then... the lovely little message "The Application DVD Studio Pro Quit Unexpectedly." This has only happened on the last two movies I've exported from FCP v5. I'm using OSX 10.4.8
I'm using DVDSP version 4. I"ve played these movies in other apps with no problem. I've resaved them with Quicktime.... no matter. No can import.

Well, sadly, I followed your string link, had high hopes. I changed the "Open With" to Quicktime, hid the general info, followed all procedures, to no avail. I can't even open the FCP movie in MOTION! It crashes too! Unfortunately, I can't go back to my previous version of Finder as I've updated my backup as well. Surely someone out there has overcome this problem??? I can't be the only one experiencing this can I be?

  • Field issue: DVCproHD FCP project to DVDSP?

I have a FCP 6.0.6 project in DVCproHD format.  I want to make an SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1.
First I exported via Compressor, using a DV Anamorphic setting, and made a DVD using that, but the video looked jittery, as if the fields were not set right.  So I re-exported the project via Compressor, using the "DVD Best Quality" setting.  I set it for the appropriate quality for my 1'45" project.  I also went in and changed the Field Dominance in Compressor to "Bottom First".  DVDSP made the 4.5gb disc but it still has that jitter.  The project takes a LONG time to export via compresor, so I'd hate to keep experimenting with different settings.  Any advice would be appreciated.
<edit> I just went back and saw I asked a very similar question back in 2008 and again in 2010.  Clearly I figured it out once or twice already, but since I only do this project once a year I guess I don't retain the procedure, plus I wish I had posted the answer once I got it.  I will definitely do that this time if I get it.

OK I got it.  The trick was to go into Compressor's FRAME CONTROLS panel and change the output fields to "Bottom first."  That was the missing ingredient apparently.  The Field Dominance tab didn't do the trick by itself.

  • Importing FCP subtitle into DVDSP using TitleExchange

Has anyone tried this converter? It converts XML file (exported from FCP) into STL, which let you import the subtitle of the FCP track that you choose into DVDSP.
However, when I import the subtitle file from DVDSP, only 51 out of 450 segments were imported into DVDSP subtitle timeline, and not placed in correct timing with the video.
    Does anyone have any solution?
    Thanks

You have to buy the Pro Version. € 135.
I did and it works fine.

  • FCP movie to DVDSP

What is the best way to export a movie from FCP to DVDSP. The movie is about
    1hr 30 min. I always used quicktime conversion, mpeg2, quality 2pass vbr.
I just purchased a new G5, upgrading FCP 5.1.4. I do not see mpeg 2 on the menu. Should I go through compressor first? I'm not sure what the best way would be with the best quality.
    Thanks

Yes, Compressor will give you best results and most options. You will need to do some work to get best quality with 90 minutes.

  • Subtitles in FCP 5 and DVDSP 4

I'm looking for the best way (preferably free) to create subtitles in FCP 5 which can then be exported out and imported into DVD SP 4 for the DVD version as well as the video version.
Anyone know what's my best bet?
    Thanks,
    Fernanda.

    I was afraid of that.
Providing translation text is not necessarily the same as providing subtitles. The decision is based on how the text items are presented or controlled by the viewer.
Traditional subtitles are permanently burned into the video.
Subtitles can be presented by using captions tools.
    Captions are user-selectable.
Captions come in several flavors of technologies and DVDs can be even stranger.

  • HD edited footage in FCP 5.1 to DVDSP 4 to "build and format" to where now?

97 minute movie shot with Sony's HDV-FX1, edited in FCP 5.1, exported to QuickTime movie, full quality, current settings. Imported into DVDSP 4.1, parsed, no problem, authored with HD settings, and built project. DSP produced a proper HDDVD_TS folder. With Apple DVD Player 4.6.5 on my duel 1.8 G5, this plays just fine.
With Toast 8 and a NU Technology Blu-ray burner (Matshita BD-MLT SW 5528), DVD-ROM (UDF), new disc, named and imported the HD file. Clicked record, selected 1x DB write speed to be on the safe side, used both a Panasonic BD-RW and a TDK BD-RW single layer disc and burned successfully. Neither disc now, to my ultimate frustration, will play in our Samsung Blu-ray DVD player or play with Apple's DVD Player. Both report a message about not supporting the media type, although the disc does mount on my G5 via the Blu-ray drive.
Thoughts on where to go from here? Our movie plays fine downconverted to 480i, but we would love to see it play in High def at 1080i.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    David,
That is the answer to why I am unable to use the "build and format" option in DSP? Seems crazy that the option is there, but the function isn't.
Did the Toast product manager give any hint as to when this option may be available? I knew were we sailing into unchartered waters, but we had hoped that by the time we were done with post that the path had already been navigated

  • Subtitles: FCP or DVDSP? Best workflow and quality?

I have always placed subtitles in FCP. I am now looking at DVDSP instead. This will help I know if I ever need a second language option. But how is the workflow and is the quality good?
For me it seems easier in FCP, because I can make editing decisions while seeing the subtitle. Having to make a locked and final edit and still not have subtitles in place appears more difficult and prone to problems. Anyone find these problems easy to deal with using DVDSP for subtitles?

    Jon Braeley wrote:
I am talking about subtitles not captions
Maybe. the function isn't the issue, it's the delivery method that makes the determination. Are you encoding to Line 21, burning the text over the video, or creating a stream of subtitle data? Most DVD players cannot handle Line 21, that's a function of the television set. All DVD players can access up to 32 subtitle streams. If you're burning the subs into the video, it doesn't matter how you play the video.
My question is that if the delivery is to be DVD, why do some users still create subtitles in FCP instead of DVDSP?
Subtitling in FCP is still a grim chore. Just seems that DVDSP would be the better option, or does FCP offer much better text quality-format options?
There is no option to burn in "subtitles" in DVDSP. DVD subtitles are streams of text and formatting data, not text image files, although sub streams can display graphics. FCP does not have a utility to export text objects as subtitle data streams in STL, SMI, SML, SON, or SCR formats. You cannot import a QT movie into the subtitle tracks.
So, where you create the subtitles is determined by two things: a) your need for flexibility (for changes or to receive data from another source) and b) your need for quality. Subs created and drawn onto the screen by the DVD player will be fairly high quality. Text that is burned into the video will never be any better than the encoder settings you used for the MPEG2.

  • From FCP to DVD Studio Pro

When I export from FCP then use compressor to create the mpeg2 file for DVD and then burn a DVD in DVD Studio Pro the video is then hot. I don't know if I'm not seeing it right w/my monitors or where the problem is. Would appreciate any trouble shooting techniques or what steps need to happen to get everything correct.

I am having the same problem I think - See 'Colour/luminance shift from FCP to output DVDSP Problems' which I posted.
Has anyone an Idea? It seems to me that FCP is not showing the footage correctly. Or its doing something to the gamma which when once outside of you machine ie DVD's it looks Brighter and burnt out.
Have you tried looking at your footage in Quicktime Player. Then going to the 'Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility' tick box in the prefs and turning that off. Does your footage look 'hot' as you describe? (I assume when you say hot you mean brighter). If it does then whatever that button does I want Compressor to do the same to footage I put through it.
Hope that makes sense to your problem, I hope you have found an answer or directions I could try...

  • Problem with importing a Motion project into FCP if it uses a Boris filter

Had an odd and highly frustrating experience. Was using a Boris Continuum filter (the posterizing one) on the background of a Motion project (was using it to age a background of a brick wall to age it and give it a more 'nighttime' look).
When I imported the file into FCP to use as an intro there, the background disappeared entirely. After an hour of troubleshooting, finally figured out that it was the Boris filter that was causing the problem (it also was probably responsible for the random crashing of FCP I was experiencing), as when I disabled the filter and re-saved the project, it worked beautifully.
Is this a 'normal' problem when using Boris filters? Do I have to export every Motion project into a Quicktime file before importing it to FCP (and possibly DVDSP) if it uses a Boris filter?

Thanks! Now the frustrating thing is that the client doesn't want to use what I created after all...bah humbug
It's not the RAM (which is either 8GB or 16....not sure on that computer). Got an e-mail from Boris Support that implied that this will happen all the time...that you have to export all projects before you use them in FCP or DVDSP or the Continuum filters won't work (loved how the support person suggested that I just use the filter in FCP...which defeats the purpose of creating something in Motion! But I digress...) Told me I had to buy a $500 program called Automatic Duck to get things to import properly...and that Boris filters won't work with the latest upgrade of FCP, btw.

  • Any way to avoid FCP taking HNC150 (AVCHD) footage straight to DVD?

I have some footage shot on the HMC150, then transfered to HDD that I need to go straight to DVD with. Is there a decent way to go to DVDSP with this footage? I would like to avoid the FCP>ProRes>Compressor>DVDSP trip if possible. A client just needs the raw stuff, no editing.
    Thanks, K

Don't know if this pertinent to the AVCHD Files that the Panasonic makes, but using Toast 9, I mounted my Sony AVCHD camera to the desktop, opened the hard drive and dragged the folder BDMV into the Toast window for making a Video DVD. Because this folder contains files other than the video files, Toast automatically rejected those. The video files all loaded, with an interesting note that one long clip that is 29 minutes long loaded as bunch of smaller clips (the 2 gig limit, I assume).
If I were to go ahead a burn this, I it would create an SD DVD - in fact, what the heck, let me go ahead an burn the DVD and see how it comes out . . . . will report later.

spanish translation company that needs to translate the english
    to spanish.
Would this be done in FCP or in DVDSP?

You can do it in FCP using Video Filters > Video > Timecode Generator, you'll have more control and see your image before committing but you'll have to render
or you can use Compressor and turn on the Timecode Generator in the Inspector, under Filters, for the MPEG-2 settings

  • DVDSP 3 or 4?

Three basic questions regarding standalone versions of DVDSP:
    Q1:
Which version of DVDSP works better on a Dual 2 Ghz Tower G5 power mac (Model A1047) if my objective is to add HD capabilities?
    Q2:
I'm currently running Tiger, FCP 4.5, & DVDSP 3 only on a Dual 1.8Ghz PM G4. I managed to find a used G5 Dual Tower Model # A1047 on ebay and & also an apple original CD of DVDSP 4 (Upgrade). Do these two make a good match if my intention is to add HD capabilities (yes/ no)?
    Q3:
Also, is it best to upgrade to Leopard (as opposed to Tiger) on the G5 if I'd like to burn Dvd's using version 4 (yes/no)?
(I should also point out that most of my work is still done in .DV format captured from a Sony 3 chip TRV900. But eventually I'd like to add a few of the latest formats as well). I won't be buying an intel mac anytime soon and I have no intention / desire to burn Blu-ray in the immediate future. I'm fine with just Single and Dual Layer Verbatim DVD-R.
    TIA

FCP4.5 only supports DVCProHD, not other more consumer formats such as AVCHD or HDV. HDV requires FCP 5. To deal with AVCHD, you'll need FCP 6 running on an intel mac.
High definition formated DVDs are not really supported in the FCS world. If you are thinking of burning Blu-ray disks, DVDSP does not author them and, the HD DVD format, which DVDSP would author, has been abandoned. It is a defunct format.
The short answer is - if you want to work in HD you'll need a much more recent version of FCP. Depending on the flavor of HD you'll be acquiring, you may need an intel mac.

  • FCP export problem w/ graphics

    Hi everyone,
I have had a reoccurring problem with my latest FCP projects when I export them through Compressor to DVDSP. My opening title is centered on the screen; my closing title is left justified. Everything is rendered and looks fine in FCP but when it gets to DVDSP, all the graphics are left justified. Any ideas on this? Not sure where I'm running into the problem... FCP, Compressor, or DVDSP.
    Thanks for your help.

Try this on the Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro forums. This is the Final Cut Express forum.

  • Chapter markers out of FCP???????

I've read some previous posts but am still confused? I've been exporting straight into Compressor with chapter marks and it's been working great in DVDSP.
Now I'm exporting using File>Export using>Quicktime. I did a test with all the examples with chapter markers, DVDSP markers, etc. BUT none of my markers come up in DVDSP after using a Droplet on my desktop????
Please help. Why is it when I use a Droplet from an exported quicktime movie that my markers are not showing up in DVDSP????
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Hi everyone and can I just say thank you to everybody who helped me on this and other requests for assistance. This is a formidable forum. I've learnt so much just by browsing through the topics in general and there are clearly people out there who care very much about sharing tips and experiences.
Anyway back to the topic - chapter markers not coming across from FCP.
Yesterday, my revised workflow succeeded in getting 16 out of 18 chapter markers across ( which I can live with though not sure why the delinquent two failed to complete the journey ). So what I learnt ( and this contradicts the manual and the Lynda.com tutorials ) is that it is important to put no text into the Marker Dialogue box where it says Comment ( one of you guys stated that ) , it is really important not to make the marker both a Chapter marker and a Compression marker ( I know that that's stating the obvious !! but I was desperate to try every set of possibilities ) and the workflow only then works when you select Chapter Markers when making the QT movie. It DOESN"T work at all when you select DVD Studio Pro markers for some reason.
One thing I've inferred from the forum is that these things tend to vary according to which versions of ( say ) Leopard, FCP, Compressor and DVDSP people are using. A number of people have mentioned that workflows that worked previously no longer work, as newer versions of the various programmes are installed.
It's a minefield but at least it's not Vista !!!!!!
Thanks again to everyone , I've learnt so much from this forum. Cheers Doug
