FCP3.0.4 on G4 QS 867_upgrade Jaguar to Tiger??

Been a bit too busy lately to hang around much, but could use some feedback...
I recently accepted a new postition and am wanting to leave the shop in as good a shape as possible.
We are considering upgrading our original Mac QS G4 (specs below) to Tiger. I've searched this and other forums with minimal info about this specific config.
I pretty much understand that we'd be okay running FCP3.0.4 on our single G4 867 with Tiger, with the following caveats...
-Complete Erase and Install limits possible QT issues (are they even still present with QT7.0.3?)
-QT7Pro is not necessary for FCP, but since we run FCP3 with QT6.5Pro, would basic QT7 create any conflicts?
-The G4 rarely runs FCP3 anymore and is primarily for multi-tasking and Graphics (we actually need to upgrade to at least 10.3, to install QuarkExpress6.0) Our thinking is why not make both G4 and dual G5 Tiger compatible.
Basically, I'm thinking we'd be okay, just hoped to hear if anyone is sucessfully (or not) running FCP3.0.4 on a single QS G4867 with Tiger.
Thanks much,
Kevan

Thanks for the reply David,
Is this just simply backwards compatibility issue?
And, from past posts, I understand that some have reverted to QT6.5 from QT7...but then doesn't Tiger require QT 7?
I'd also determined that since our/their primary need for this is to load Quark, the better solution may be to simply upgrade Jaguar to Panther instead of Tiger?.?.?
If so, recommendations for reputable dealers would be appreciated. (We purchase through Apple Government Sales and they don't sell Panther)
I've looked at some posts regarding purchasing 10.3, and understand to avoid 'system specific' disks...just concerned that what we get is solid as I most likely wouldn't be here to deal with problems, should they arise.
Thanks again,
Kevan

  • Upgrade from Jaguar to Tiger

Can I upgrade directly from Jaguar to Tiger or do I have to upgrade to Panther and them upgrade to Tiger. I was running Tiger, had issues and had to erase hard drive and do a reinstall with Jaguar as I could not load Tiger direct to my G3. Thanks

    Hi MLM333!
If you were succesfully running Jaguar 10.2.x, chances are, your Firmware was already updated at some time.
    Open your System Profiler.
    Click on Hardware.
Do you see Boot ROM Version: 4.1.9f1?
If so, the Firmware is updated.
Also, you wrote "Tiger would not install I guess since there wasn't an earler version of X to upgrade."
Does the Tiger install DVD, that you used to upgrade, look like THIS ONE?
If not, that could be part of your problem. You may have upgrade or machine specific discs.

  • From Jaguar to Tiger?

Hi, I have a 17in imac G4 with the following specs currently running on os10.2.8
    Build 6R73
    800 MHz processor Power PC
I've just been given the Tiger DVD upgrade to upgrade my ibook which was running on Panther, but I was wondering whether it would be possible to upgrade my imac straight from Jaguar up to Tiger.

Hi, I've been searching for confirmation that I can upgrade from Jaguar to Tiger, and it looks like this is the place to go...
I am currently running Jaguar 10.2.8 on my 15" flat screen iMac G4 (see specs): (http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Manuals/specs/imac/L17637CEN.pdf)
I love this Mac, and it still feels and acts brand spanking new, but I need to upgrade. (upgrade = $400 vs. new iMac = $1600.)
    Questions:
1)Can I upgrade from Jaguar 10.2.8 to Tiger 10.4; and from iLife 3 to iLife 06; and add an external dvd drive (such as Lightscribe -my built in Pioneer 2x burner is not changeable) without much trouble?
2)Can I delete my OS9 operating system? I have plenty of hard drive space, plus an external Lacie HD, but would like to delete the 0S9 Classic files since I never use them.. is that possible? Safe? What's the best way to do it?
(I purchased my iMac from Apple with 512MB ram installed so I can eventually upgrade to full gig - I will do this as soon as I know if the upgrade is possible.)

  • Best way to upgrade from Jaguar to Tiger?

I am upgrading from Jaguar 10.2.8 on my G4 DP1.25 machine to Tiger 10.4.3 and would like some advice on how to best do the upgrade before i start. This is my first time doing any real OS upgrade on my mac.
I used to do it all the time on my windows pc box and i'd always reformat the harddrive and start with a clean slate so to speak. That usually yeilded the best results for me. Should I start from scrtach on my mac as well or do the Archive and Install?
I am upgrading to Tiger so I can install latest version of Final Cut Production Suite and be able to take advantage of OS updates - so any thing that will help keep machine running clean and fast will help in the long run.
I have two internal drives and can make plenty of space to do backups if need be.
Thanks for any help you can offer! ~Matt
    G4 DP1.25   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Thanks for the comments thus far "scb".
I don;t have disk warrior or techtool or the like - should i just use the first aid on the install DVD for jaguar or tiger instead?
I have a lot of third-party software and utilities installed in jaguar - most probably aren't compatible with Tiger so would I be better to erase and install after I backup my data? I think i'd rather not have all this stuff get uselessly brought into the new install of Tiger. Fresh and clean is probably better in the long run right?
I'm just worried that i'll end up like a lot of other people in this forum with start-up or other problems after the upgrade. I don't think it will be a problem - the mac is pretty much a stock unit except for some software, an extra 120gb harddrive, and all the RAM is now third-party "Kingston brand" (my original apple ram died 1 week after warranty expired - argggg which caused me 3 days of discussion room surfing and a call to apple tech support to realize that i needed to go buy new RAM). All that to say i just want to be sure i do it right and don't get stuck having to spend many days/hours fixing problems... i'm a bit of a pesimist when it comes to upgrades.
    Additional thoughts?

  • Upgrading from jaguar to Tiger on an eMac

i am posting for a friend who was upgrading her eMac from jaguar to Tiger. she followed the directions that she was prompted to follow, got to the end of the installation and, as prompted, did the restart. when the computer rebooted, it never fully restarted. she just got the screen that we all get with the spinning wheel. it spun for about an hour. she rebooted, same thing. obviously something went wrong with the install. where does she go from here?
    thanks.

If one of these steps solves the problems she need not go further, but she needs to learn how to backup her data.
    1. Try restarting with nothing but Apple keyboard and mouse attached.
    2. Try resetting the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3. Try booting off the 10.4 installer DVD if it is a retail version using the Startup Manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
and go through the language selection screen and go to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility, select First Aid. Verify disk, and report back any errors to you. Repair permissions as well, and try restarting.
    4. If her data is backed up, but she can't boot, she should do step 3 with a repair disk.
    5. If repair disk does not work, she should get an external hard disk that is Firewire and see if should install 10.4 on it, and see the contents of the internal drive while booted off it using the aforementioned startup manager to boot. http://www.macsales.com/ sells such hard drives. If she can see the contents of the internal drive, she should backup her information if in step 3 she wasn't backed up. If she can't see it, she should use buy Prosoft Data Rescue to recover information to the external hard drive.
    6. If she got usable data from step 5 onto the external hard drive, she should attempt to archive and install 10.4 on the internal drive with the external drive detached, and recover information from the external drive:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
    7. If she was not able to get usable data on step 5, she should try Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair the internal drive.
If after all that she can't get usable data, I recommend she seek out a data recovery specialist if she didn't backup.
In the future she should always backup before updating, and follow these upgrade tips of mine:

  • .dmg compatabilty Jaguar - Panther - Tiger

A friend using 10.2.8 seems unable to open a dmg, created by me under 10.4.8 using hdutil (error 95, "invalid filesystem" - roughly translated).
Can anybody offer an explanation for this? Is hdutil the problem? Or is there a major difference between Jaguar and Tiger?
Unfortunately don't have the opportunity right now to play around testing, hence the question here first of all.
    TIA,
    Rich

Hi guys and thanks for the replies.
So if I've interpreted the replies correctly, it sounds like, yes there is a difference (journaling) but it's should be backwards compatible and not necessarily cause a problem?
The image format (hdiutil) is UDZO and I can confirm yes it is journaled. As I'm still not too much the wiser, here's the code I'm using to create the image... maybe you can spot something I'm overlooking (I'm not expert in this sort of thing by long way!)...
Btw, I'm doing this from within another script language (Lingo), hence variables in place of filenames.
    Create a blank writeable image:
hdiutil create -srcFolder <...> -format UDRW -volName <...> -attach -ov <...>
A folder is then copied into the image using ditto and window appearence is set via an applescript.
Finally image is converted to read-only:
hdiutil convert <...> -format UDZO -imagekey zlib-level=9 -ov -o <...>
    Cheers,

  • Jaguar to tiger and back

I had extra ram professionally installed in my G3 ibook with OS 10.2.8 (Jaguar). I have the proper Tiger install disk. I've backed up all my documents and am now ready to install Tiger. 1.If I install Tiger, will the data in my address book, calendar, quicken and photos uploaded to Nikon software still be there when I upgrade? 2. If Tiger doesn't work properly, can I reinstall 10.2.8 and have everything work the way it did before the Tiger Install? I'm nervous about this because my 7-year old ibook runs like a dream, but I can't run Skype or upgrade safari, itunes, etc. with my dream machine.

    Conny:
Actually, the point is to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility, and you can do this booted from Tiger. The following procedure assumes you have already cloned your internal HDD to an external firewire HDD as suggested earlier.
    Installation Process
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    • If Disk Utility reports Disk repaired or needs on repairs Quit Disk Utility
    • Open Installer and begin installation.
    • Select Options and choose Archive and Install and to preserve settings.
    • Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger)
    • Proceed with installation.
    • After installation computer will restart for setup.
    • After setup, reboot computer.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    • Connect to Internet.
    • Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger)
    Computer will restart.
    • Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
    • Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    • Install all updates.
    Computer may restart after updates.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Upgrading from Jaguar to Tiger

    Hello,
I'm hoping that some brilliant individual will be able to help me with this "situation." I am trying to upgrade a good family friend's eMac to Tiger from Jaguar 10.2.8 (technically they meet the Leopard requirements, but I think that Tiger would run better with the setup that they currently have). Like a good boy, I want to back up their hard drive before I upgrade. This is where the problems begin. They don't have an external hard drive and the cd/dvd drive is read only for dvds. I brought over my Iomega external drive, but it would not show up when I connected it to their computer, either with firewire or with USB (the system profiler recognized and knew what it was, but I could not access the drive anywhere - I'm not really sure why). The one backup program that I found that still worked with Jaguar could not recognize the external drive either and it would not let me backup to the internal drive. I don't really want to spend forever backing up their stuff onto cds. They have around 18 gigs of stuff on their hard drive, although not all of that needs to be saved. Target disc mode does not work between my model of macbook and the eMac according to Apple (I tried it - turns out they were right). Will the migration assistant work? I've thought of buying an external DVD burner, since I am interested in owning one myself. Is there one out there that will work with this eMac and my macbook? Any other ideas? A flash drive would work, but also would be tedious. I was hoping to be able to let a backup utility do its thing and not have to manually back-up this drive. Anyone?

At least with the eMac in FW TDM and attached with the correct cable
to the newer Intel-based Mac, you could use the optical drive in the
newer Mac to archive larger size files than with a CD-RW drive in eMac.
    Few if any Jaguar-based items would really do all that well in Tiger;
and the few that could be OK (AppleWorks 6, etc) could be extracted
from the Jaguar-based original eMac install-restore disc set through
the use of the utility Pacifist in its demo mode and installed in Tiger.
For that much trouble, if one needed an office-like suite, get NeoOffice.
It does word-like stuff and spreadsheet, & so on; it's a free download.
The external drive may show up in the eMac's Disk Utility; if it does, that
may be a time to see if it can be partitioned and formatted for Mac. If not
already. The newer Macs may offer a different format than the eMac is
comfortable in using; since Intel-based Macs can use different schemes.
You could see if the external drive can be used by the Intel-Mac for moved
content from the FireWire TDM-booted eMac, to be archived on the external.
Anyway, sounds like fun. The easiest thing would be upgrading the eMac RAM.
(In Tiger, after upgrading to 10.4.11, be sure to get all the Java upgrades, the
last Security Update, Quicktime, new browsers, Adobe Shockwave + Flash,
Adobe Reader, and consider a few widgets such as iStat Pro, and DashQuit.
The OnyX version for Tiger is a good utility from Titanium Software, too.
The system discs which shipped with the Intel-based computer won't work in
the PPC computer; nor will other model's specific disc sets. You'd need retail 10.4.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Upgrading from Jaguar to Tiger on non dvd FP iMac

From my research of these discussions it seems like it should be possible to use the DVD drive in my wifes 15" powerbook G4 to upgrade my FP700G4iMac to OS 10.4 using something called firewire disk mode and a retail DVD of Tiger? (Seems that Apple no longer exchanges the DVD for CD's?) Can some one point me to a write-up on how to do this or otherwise explain it so I don't screw it up. It's also a mystery to me which upgrade method to use: Simple update vs. archive and install vs. erase and install vs. ??
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Hello.
Connect the two machines with a 6pin-to-6pin Firewire cable (example).
    iBook: Insert the Tiger disc
iBook: Go to Apple menu > System Preferences... > Startup Disk > 'Target Disk Mode'. The iBook will restart in Target Mode.
iMac: Power on and hold the Alt ⌥ (Option) key down.
iMac: Select the Tiger Install disc to boot from.
iMac: Run the Installer for an Upgrade.
iMac: When you are at the OS X desktop eject the Install disc.
    Disconnect the firewire cable.
iBook: Power down using the power button.
I'd advise backing up all your data before undertaking this.

  • Jaguar Server, Tiger Client--Anyone having issues?

    Specifically with 10.4.6?
I'm seeing the symptoms described here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2170629#2170629
and wondered if 10.4.6 changed anything to do with authentication from the client to Server.
No such issue happened under 10.4.3.

    sorry for taking so long.
A few things came up that had to be taken care of
before i could get back to this...

  • OSX Tiger from Jaguar

I have an imac G3 600Mhz (2001) that is rated for use with up to OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) and currently runs 10.2.8 - it has the latest firmware (4.1.9) and a DVD drive and is ready.  Per other posts, an upgrade from Jaguar to Tiger is possible and will work, however, I'm confused when it comes to picking an appropriate upgrade DVD in the general marketplace, as everything comes with warnings and caveats about compatibility, and pretty much no ad for upgrade DVDs references the imac G3 specifically (nor would I expect them to since G3s never came built with Tiger).
If I see an ad listing OSX 10.4.11 upgrade, can I assume it works, or are there some other parameters that I need to validate (build dates, look for something that works on a G4 etc etc etc)?
    Thanks, D
P.S. I can't believe it's that complex, but it seems like it might be.  Maybe it's that Apple did sell a generic, retail packaged DVD that would basically upgrade ANYTHING legitimate, but that other resellers are marketing machine-specific (non-retail) copies  (kinda like there are OEM system system restore bundles for Intel machines)?

    Hello,
Upgrade discs normally upgrade only one version, say 10.3.x to 10.4.x, usually issued to Mac buyers that bought a Mac 2 to 4 weeks before introduction of the later OSX version.
You need a Retail version, not the Gray Discs.
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • Jaguar Server to Tiger Server

    Hello
I have a Jaguar server and I want to upgrade to Tiger server. Can I just do an upgrade or should I install from scratch? I'm leaning toward installing from scratch. Is it an easy migration from Jaguar to Tiger? Are there instructions posted somewhere for me to review? Any help would be appreciated
    thank

  • DVD to FCP?

Need to import/capture a dvd (my old demo reel) to FCP3, don't have dvdxdv, still on Jaguar, Apple manual says something about changing it to a QT file but doesn't really explain how?
    G4 Tower FCP3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   Dual 867MHz 512RAM 1x80G/ 1x200HD

So I can't put the dvd in my dvd player on my Powermac?
Yes, you can. And you can play it like a DVD, only you cannot then get that into FCP without third party software like MPEG Streamclip, or DVDxDV or Cinematize.

  • IPhoto not open in Leopard

    Hi ALL,
Probable he wrong forum, but I have iPhoto 2 an is NOT opening in Leopard.
Is there a link where i Can download a iPhoto version that runs in Leopard?
Or can I extract it from a original install CD from a OSX version that I own. Like Jaguar - Panther - Tiger ??
Thanks for helping me out in this matter ...
    Dimaxum

You need at least iPhoto 4 or later to run iPhoto in 10.5.
The only way to upgrade from v2 is to purchase an iLife package.

  • 10.2.8 Client, error code -1712

Suddenly last week after several months of working fine, our 10.2 and 10.4 clients couldn't login. The 10.3 clients login to Network Home Directories just fine. You can use the same network account login on 10.3 client and it responds. A login on 10.2 or 10.4 does not. Apple support has not been successful either.
10.2 stays on the login window for hours. The barber pole keeps going. 10.4's login window goes dull and eventually will time out.
The server is an Xserve with 10.3.9 Server running.
I've run Repair Permissions, Disk Repair and Disk Warrior. I reimaged the client with our stand .dmg. It logged in OK until I updated it via Software Update.
Eventually if you leave the 10.2 client trying to login for hours a Desktop will be displayed and the message,
"The Operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -1712)"
I'm at my wit's end. I don't have enough money to upgrade all the Jaguar to Tiger or Panther. I'm hoping someone here has some insight. Thanks.
    10.2 and 10.4 clients   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Check your 10.2.8 machines Directory Access and make sure LdapV2 is not checked and also that Ldap V3 is checked and configured correctly. I found that if I had both Ldapv2 and v3 on my 10.2.8 clients could not log in. 10.3 clients only have the option for Ldap V3, so it is not an issue.
