FCP4.5 w/OS10.4.7, FCP5.1 not installing HELP please !

I have an older G5 dual proc, originally w/dual 500, upgraded to dual 1.3. Still has the original graphics card. Had been running OS 10.3.9 w/FCP 4.5, everything OK.
I just upgraded the OS to 10.4.6, bought full retain install, just updated to 10.4.7 over the internet.
Now, FCP HD 4.5 will not see my DV decks for capture - all decks, switched cables. NO difference. Checked all the settings, which are correct, so I'm guessing something driver-side may be out of whack.
I borrowed install disks from my office for Final Cut Studio 5 to do a test install on my Mac, to get me through captures and editing I have to do this weekend for a freelance client. Fully intending to buy the update, once biz resumes this week, assuming this upgrade solved my problem.
BUT FCP 5 will not install... on the list of products in the install menu, FCP is greyed out, as it is preventing me from installing it on my Mac. I checked the minimum requirements, all seems ok, except perhaps the graphics card.
Has Apple has upped the minimum graphics card for FCP5, (from what was ok for FCP 4.5) and thus my present card will not meet spec, so FCP will not install? Thus I'm doubly screwed? I need to upgrade to FCP to solve the problem w/not seeing my DV drives any more, but to do that I need to upgrade my graphics card?

FCP 5.1 will not run on that card, no not have details right now, but minimum VRAM is more than 16 MB if I recall
Sounds more like an issue with the OS that messed up FCP 4.5. Do you see the deck in System Profiler?

Setting Up New FCP5 HD Bay -- Need Help

I'm setting up an HD edit bay for a friend, and I have a number of questions. Any help would be a godsend.
Basically, he's got a G5 with Final Cut Studio installed, a Motu audio interface, a Mackie Mixer, a Decklink Pro HD dual link, M-audio LX4 5.1 speakers, and a DVD/VHS recorder. He has one 250G internal capture drive, and one external 1TB firewire G-Raid. He's running a 23" and 20" Cinema Displays, and a Panasonic 32" HD LCD Flatscreen.
He wants to rent decks per project for capture and output.
My questions is this, how do we output to SD VHS/DVD or other formats for clients? Do we need a Switcher? Is it possible to do format conversion in Final Cut and output via Firewire instead of decklink to SD devices?
Also, is SDI (serial digital interface) cross-platform from SD to HD? Kramer Electonics has an interesting format converter that supports SDI, but will that change HD to SD? Here is a model number and link. FC-7402

One of the Mac Vendors suggested the Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme, which sounds perfect, but costs $2000 - 3000.
I'm looking for a low cost alternative, if possible.
I really need help from someone experienced with this. I'm a freelance editor who cuts offline mostly on Avid for episodic TV, but my friend master HD out of his Mac edit suite. This is new territory for me.

You should setup your local DNS to resolve only for the 'film.lab.' domain. Any requests that your local DNS will not be authoritative for should be forwarded to your district's DNS server. You should also set your local DNS to allow recursion only for clients on the 10.x.x.x subnet. The failure of clients configured to use your DNS for name resolution could be due to rules that have bee setup on your district's edge router to block outbound and inbound port 53 requests for all internal clients.
If you set your server and clients to use your district's DNS server as the secondary for your zone, you must make certain that any hostnames within your local zone are defined on your district's DNS to resolve to the private, 10.x.x.x, subnet that you will be running your systems on. If you don't -and your DNS goes down and there is no secondary defined on the clients that contains the zone info for your subnet- your clients won't be able to find any hosts. If you wish to run services that will be accessible from the Internet on your local server, this may require your network admins to make changes to routing to allow those request to be pass from the public network to the private one.
Also, if your district runs a central DHCP server you will need your district network admins to setup their DHCP server to return the correct client settings for your DNS and search domains for the clients within your subnet. If they do run a central DHCP server, do not attempt to set up a local one for your subnet. If you do, the probability that you will receive a very angry phone call from a not so happy fellow at your district is very high.

Problem with installing Lightroom 2 onto Macbook Pro running OS10.6.8 - any ideas why it will not install??

To be able to work on my older laptop on location I wanted to install Lightroom 2 onto a MacBook Pro which runs 10.6.8
It stops at the end of the installment and tells me to contact Adobe for info.... that's nit very easy anyway.

None. That's what threw me. It happened again right after I posted and I walked away from it. When I came back I started unplugging peripherals and found a wonky power strip switch. Go figure.

Installing OS10.3.1 Panther? Help Please..

I'm trying to install a fresh install of this OS and am prompted to have my second CD ready, however, when the first install disk completes the system shuts down then restarts to a blue screen.( it stays blue with nothing on it) The only way I've been able to install disk #2 is to hold down the shift key and start in safe mode to finish the installation. I've tried the "C" key as well and nothing but a blue screen. I have no other software for this machine and just want a fresh install of the basic OS. I've run Disk Utility and also have verified permissions, which usually finds something wrong, then I repair permissions. Once finished I'm able to boot normally, however, I have to remove the Permissions folder from the library folder and place it on the desktop for it to boot. After this Safari freezes, quicktime won't open and I'm unable to move "windows" (sorry) and scroll normally. I try to move a window and a shadow appears behind the window, and scrolling only scrolls the very bottom of the page. I'm wondering if this is all because I installed the OS Disk #2 in safe mode, and if so, how do I install this otherwise?
I've also downloaded all available updates and am told my firmware is also up to date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I think you need to use the black labeled disks. Quicksilvers did not come with Panther (Panther was not released until after the Quicksilver models were discontinued. I'm assuming you purchased the Quicksilver used.
I'm guessing, then, that your original installation did not go 100 percent. I think you should start again. I would like to suggest doing the following first:
1. Boot from your Panther Installer Disc 1. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Upon completion of formatting quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the installation. When you get to the point of selecting the destination and have gone to the next step, click on the Customize button so you can select or deselect components for the installation. You can save time and disk space by installing only the printer families you need, deselecting the Asian fonts and additional language localizations.

Can't open Firefox : I get a window saying another copy of firefox is open . MAC OS10.6.4 , which is not the case . MAC OS 10.

Opening FCP5 project in FCP7

Greetings all,
I just finished replacing a bad systems drive and upgraded all my software to make them current. The problem I am having is that one of my projects (created in FCP5) is not opening in the new FCP7. It goes through all the motions, it even shows the converted time line, bins, files and etc. but just before it finishes Final Cut crashes. Any ideas?

If you still have access to FCP5 open the project and re-save under a new name.
If that doesn't work, save as XML
If you don't have access to FCP5, or it still doesn't work, take all you media files off-line (disconnect or remove the hard drives) and try to open in FCP7, if it opens, save under new name before bringing media back on-line.
If you continue to have problems you'll be using trial & error to eliminate the bad media file

Installing photoshop cs4 on OS10.8

A friend of mine asked for help. She is still using CS4- she was a professional photographer, but now just doing it for fun. She said that if she lets her battery go dead in her Macbook PRO OS10.8.5, photoshop will not start again. She said it's happened before and she reinstalled it. Everything appeared to be there in the applications folder, but when I tried to start it, it said the registration was no longer valid.
I decided to uninstall and reinstall it again, using her disk which was photoshop only. It goes half way thru the install, and just sits there and never finishes. I tried my old CS4 suite disk, which included acrobat, illustrator etc. It starts to install, but when I come to the part where I can choose which programs to install photoshop is greyed out and not available. I thought maybe CS4 was not compatible with the newer OS, so I tried the disc in my iMac (OS10.10.1) and photoshop was not greyed out. It probably would have installed, but I stopped there since I have Creative cloud installed.
Can anyone tell me what is going on with that machine???

Need Canon MP600 Driver for Macbook Pro Retina running OS10.9.1 Mavericks, Any Suggestions?

The Canon website says the MP600 printer is not supported after OS10.7 but they do not offer any advice on alternatives. I really need the basic print functions to print things such as web pages and documents and being able to use the scanner too would be nice. Other features I can live without. The printer is connected directly to the Macbook using USB. Any suggestions on using drivers already loaded as standard on my Mac or generics that I can find online would be appreciated.

OS10.4 will no longer connect to internet via dial-up, but it will in OS9.2

Over the last week I noticed it was taking longer and longer to make a connection to the internet, then this evening it just would not connect at all in OS10.4. A message comes up and says there is a modem error to check all settings and try again. For a long time I ignored that message. I would just try again and it would connect. But today it refuses to connect.
I restarted in OS9.2.2 and it connected right away. Something must be screwed up in the modem or something in OS10.4.6 and I need some help. Right now I am using OS9.2.2 to post this question.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Connecting Canon MF4350d via usb under OS10.9.4 scanner driver won't install

When driver loaded, the printer/scanner does not show up in the add + list. Canon "ToolBox" will not open. Canon site says they support MF4350 thru OS10.9.3
anyone had any luck with work around? It prints (different driver) just fine.

Sorry. Slightly wrong information. The MF devices that have an Ethernet port or WiFi support will show you more than one option when you press the Scan button on the MF. With your model only having USB, then pressing the Scan button will only show Scanning Mode, which is correct and what I should have said.
So with the MF set to Scanning Mode, open MF Toolbox and click on Scanner on the menu bar. You should see the MF4350 USB in a window similar to what I have shown below
Note that I think you will see MF4340-4350 USB. Which mentions the MF4350 as connected via USB, ensure this is selected (highlighted)
With the MF43xx USB connection selected, you can now click the Save button as shown below
This will display a new window letting you set your scanning preferences, similar to that show below.
If you can get this window to display, click the green Start button to test that you can scan a document. If this does not work, then please reply. If it does work, then you are ready to being scanning from the Mac.

Losing Anamorphic flag (bug?) in FCP5

Hi all,
Working on a FCP5 set, I have a small problem (bug?).
Material captured as Anamorphic (DVCPRO50)
Working in Anamorphic sequences.
All is fine.
But when importing (File > Import) clips from other projects (in which material was captured as anamorphic) FCP5 does not recognise the anamorhic 'flag' and makes it 4:3.
Well, no problem. I know this one, so before inserting this imported clip, I set the flag to Yes (anamorphic).
I now insert this anamorphic clip into the anamorpic timeline.
Still everything works like a charm,
UNTIL I Match frame this clip from within the sequence. The clip which is anamorphic in the timeline matches to the same frame in the Viewer, but only in 4:3 !!! ???
The browser still says 'anamorphic', but the Viewer shows a 4:3 picture and inserts as 4:3 (so pillarboxes) in the anamorphic timeline.
Is that a bug?

Interesting, though could this be an issue with DVCPRO50 material?
I ask because I'm unable to reproduce this with DVCPRO25 and DV/DVCAM material captured in Anamorphic, as well as QT Movies (of said captured material) created by FCP (and then reimported).
I also tried QT Conversion, then reimported, but I'm not able to reproduce the issue with Match Frame.

Font Problems with FCP5 Upgrade

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 to 5.0.3 and also purchased a full version of Final Cut Studio for my company. I have a font family that works fine on the full version of FCP5 but not on the upgraded version. Any Ideas?

Yup - you could try using FontBook to resolve duplicate font issues.

Loading Classic into OS10.3.9

Hey All!
I have a Powerbook G4 (400MHz/768 MB SDRAM) that just had OS10.3.9 loaded into it.
My problem is that I have to run one program in Classic, and Classic seems not to be here.
A freind suggested that I go to System preferences, open "Sharing" , Check "Remote Apple Events" to allow events from OS9.
BUT when I open the program (MacLux 2.0, if you care) I get an error message that says there is no Classic Folder installed.
Is there a place or a way to safely download Classic into 10.3.9?

You probably don't have "classic" installed. Classic is OS 9.2.x. There is no free download. You have to buy. Here's one source. Apple Rescue http://www.applerescue.com

OS10.3 Install Problem - Says HD doesn't have 10.3 installed

The title pretty much spells out my dilemma. I am tryng to install OS10.3 and get to the part where I decide the destination. There is an exclamation mark over my HD and says that it cannot install on this drive with no other options available. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

When it says to select the destination volume (the exclamation is there) and it tells me "You cannot install Mac OSX on this volume. An earlier version of Mac OSX is not installed" down below. I have all three discs, I have removed all excess hardware including memory and did a firmware upgrade on the 3rd party video card I have. Any suggestions?
