FCP5 struggling to barely open (but not crashing itself)

All of a sudden today FCP has been acting like it has a sickness or something. When I try opening the majority of project files, a blank Browser and Viewer:Slug window open but but nothing else; the little color spin dial thing comes up but just keeps playing until eternity. A couple of my projects open up just fine, but most others don't? This is so weird how it all of a sudden started to act like this. I'm running version 5.1.4 and I have plenty of HD space left (7GB).
My other apps are running fine and this just started to happen today. It is so bizzare?

Ouch, I thought 7 was a good amount!
I have 3 Externals... all firewire. 2 have at least 100GB left, respectively; one is down to just 2GB.
Project files have always existed on my desktop in a neat folder.
Media is in whatever folder project I assign it to accross the HD's.
Only thing I have done recently is install two demo filters (Magic Bullet and another film look filter) but I haven't even bothered to try them out yet. Maybe I'll erase them and see if those are the culprits?
Otherwise, nothing else added recently other than the Mac auto-updates to various programs.
Running G5 dual 2.0/2GB memory.
Never had a problem once with the way my computer is set up until just now!

Install the v10.6.6 combo update available here. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.6. The combo includes fixes that were not included in the original update.

Restart your Mac and try the MAS again.
You can download apps directly from the MAS once you have it running.
Considering the TM backup took so long, make sure there's enough space on your Mac startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

When I totally close eyetv and reopen eyetv and open a live tv window the closed captioning comes back. I never noticed this with os leopard, Just after i installed os snow leopard. All software is up to date only I think, thanks to apple they droped support for logic express. Thanks for any suggestions.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Calendar (not called iCal anymore) does not include that capability any longer, apparently. What you have to do now is go to Automator and create a Calendar Alert action. You can add a Run AppleScript object to the action and paste in your script there, then when you save it, it will become available as a choice in the alert menu in Calendar.

I think that you are trying to view a form fields PDF file and you cannot see the content that was filled in on those fields. Form fields will not show in the mail app or in iBooks. Download Adobe Reader for the iPad. It is free and it offers a lot of features for a free app. Save that PDF to Adobe Reader and see if the text in the fields appear.

Itunes opens, but not completely (transparent)

First, I uploaded iTunes using a CD. Then I tried downloading from the iTunes website. Both times I get the same result...
When I double-click the iTunes shortcut on my desktop, iTunes opens but not completely. Only the text becomes visible (like File Edit View...across the top. And some text toward the bottom of the program). Everything else seems to be transparent. Any help would be great.

I thinks some folks got it to work by updating the PC's DirectX stuff

How do I configure thunderbird open but not jump to web link in e-mail. I want the web pages, but do not want to display my browser page until I have clicked on several links, then I will go look at my browser pages.

From the menu bar select Tools-Account Setting-Composition and Addressing
Set the reply option to Above the Quote
You have to do this for each account if you have more than one.
No menu bar? Press the alt key.

Firefox crashes when I try to send an e-mail (hotmail) - can open but not send or reply

I can send e-mail using I.E. but not Firefox
The message I get is " crash reporter cannot send a crash report -- the application did not leave a crash dump file"

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

This was first reported 10 days ago. Had to be out of the country for a week - without photoshop working-- and now I'm back with the same problem. Can someone please help, or do I dump this and try to get some help just reloading the program?

It had 4 years of photos and videos on it.
To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

Windows not showing. Page source and library windows open but not showing.

I select View --> Page Source and no window appears. Under the Window menu, the item Source: . . . shows but no window. If I close the main window then the item is ticked but still no actual window.
I have disable all extensions and plugins, safe mode, revert all preferences.
the same happens with Show all Bookmarks. This is why I posted this under bookmarks problems originally - see below.
I now find the same happens to downloads and Error console windows. No problems in Safari or MS Word (usually the worst performer)
Bookmarks are all present, but show all bookmarks produces no window, even though the window menu shows an item and I can select it.

The one that solved it was my own last post, which does not have a Solved it.
I copied the FF profile folder from another login and started with that.
However. . . the problem is back. I installed extensions, NoScript and MyBookmarks and it seemed OK after that.
Then I installed Download Youtube videos + 3.3.51, then DownThemAll! 2.0.7, Google Shortcuts 2.1..6, ImTranslator, QuickWiki and Read It later. No Plugins ennabled.
when I disable all extensions then the windows for downloads, error console and 'open link in new window appear OK, but not the source or Library windows.
As before they are on the window menu but no way to make them visible.

Locking files so they can be opened but not saved in a modified state on another machine

I'm creating a batch of files for trainees in my work environment to help them learn an application. I'm trying to lock the files so they always start out in the same state I left them in. I want the students to be able to open the files, work in them, but NOT accidentally hit "SAVE" before closing out, thereby modifying them, preventing the next student who opens them from having the same clean slate the first one had.
I've tried locking the files in "GET INFO", and I've tried changing Privileges from "read & write" to "read" only for all fields. This works on the computer on which I created the projects, but the locks and privilege changes are gone when I copy the files to students machines, email them or otherwise transport them off the original machine on which they were created. It's not practical to go to each students machine and manually relock and change privelages there. These projects have to be distributed to many Macs in many locations.
As a fall back position, is there a way of locking, and/or changing the "read & write" option to "read" on multiple files at the same time so it isn't necessary to open each of about 50 files on each students machine and manually lock them?

If they don't need to edit them, save them as PDFs.
If they do need to edit them, mark them as Stationary. When you open a piece of Stationary, you get a new, untitled copy of the original document. I suppose they might be able to still save over the top of the original stationary, but not without warning.
You can set the permissions for all the documents within the same folder by using the "Apply to Enclosed" command in the Gear menu in the Get Info dialog. Set the folder to Read Only, then Apply to Enclosed. You could still use the Stationary trick as that would create a new, untitled copy that has to be saved somewhere else, and would likely remove the "you can't edit this file" dialogs.
I think the command line copy utilities may be able to copy without changing permissions. Look for info on cp or ditto.

Layer Style Window Opening But Not Visable

I just began having problems with Photoshop today.
I wanted to apply Blending Options to a layer. The Layer Style window opened but it was nowhere to be found! Because I could not access this window to either perform a task or close it, I had to Control/Alt/Delete because nothing else in the program would work. Obviously, it was waiting for a response to the window but as I couldn't see it, I couldn't access it.
I've never had this problem before and I've just spent four hours trying to find the problem, including messing with screen resolutions and monitor designations (I use a laptop with a flat screen as #2 monitor).
Can someone please help me!!

I just tried (as a last resort) changing one of my screen resolutions from 800 x 600 (so I don't have to squint) to 1280 x 800 and there was the edge of the window! - way off to the right. I just dragged it back into the middle of my Photoshop screen on my other monitor and it hasn't left me since.
I knew the silly window was open somewhere Who'd a thought it would be hiding way off screen!
