FCP7 - Computer shut down after 5 minutes of importing HDV footage

Hello,
I've searched around forums for a couple hours now looking for people with similar problems as mine.
I've taken about 10 minutes of 1080i, 24p, footage on my Canon HV40 camera. I'm capturing the footage in HDV-Apple ProRes 422 1080p24 using my own main harddrive (with the OS installed on it) as my scratch disk. After about 5 minutes of capturing, my computer just shuts off. No error, no pin wheel spinning.. just complete shut down. I turn it back on, try it again, same thing... right around 5 minutes it crashes again.
I've tried deleting Perian out of my quicktime library folder, using software update, deleting quicktime and reinstalling the newest version... I'm about to test it again after having trashed my Final Cut Pro settings. I've read that having my scratch disk be the same as my OS main disk could be the problem... which is really unfortunate because I have a lot of room on my main disk set aside for this and I didn't really want to have to buy an external hard drive.
Anyway... long post, but I'm just trying to describe the whole situation here. See my specs in my profile please. Can anyone help me?
Thank you!

God I hate to see someone throwing money at a project without a definante answer, but I would venture to say your processor and ram are really somewhat of the problem. You will find in other threads here, people with better processors and more than twice the RAM you have are still having problems when dealing with HDV. Sure HDV is made affordable to film, but it would seem that you still need good hardware to back that camera if you are looking to edit.
Also, for future reference, I have read by tons of indie filmakers that while its ok to have 1 TB drivers, it is somewhat better to run 2 500 GB drives so you can backup your work in a couple of different places. I don't know if you are using tape or hard drive/memory cards but if you are moving towards a NLE workflow (tapeless) more hardrives are better than large hard drives for storage safety.
I know for positive, many editors and film makers are begging for a software for logging and capturing that improves naming of files, and also automatically backs up the footage in two different places so the cards or hard drive for the camera can be formatted and reused.

My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?
Yesterday I used it for about ten minutes.
Yesterday was the first time using it after about 5 days.

Could you tell me how to check my system log, and how to tell if it is the disk cache? I am pretty sure it is not the GPU as I was having the problem using a Quadro 4000 as well.

  • Computer shuts down after exporting H.264 from mts file

My computer shuts down after trying to export a H.264 file from a .mts file. I did this with no problems a few days ago, twice! This time line is longer, about 6.5 minutes. I have a I 5 processor, a gtx 660 graphics card and 8 megs of ram. I exported audio as a wave file and added those to the timeline. In the events panel, I get a message: "file importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure of audience_end_short.wav. Reading and writing this files metadata (xmp) has been disabled". it said the same for another short bit of audio, .wav file. I thought maybe there was a over heating issue, but to no avail. Do I need to get an I 7 processor? Please help!

sorry about the spelling! Still going. About the driver issue. I was updating Geo Force drivers and my friend said to revert to the original install, which I did a while ago. That helped, but obviously didn't cure it. Wonder if I should do the same for windows updates. So although I'm still rendering after 2 hours, perhaps the new user acount will get me through this. So strange that I was able to render/export the exact files the other day. Like I said, this mts clip is longer by a minute. Plus, I got rid of the wav files that had a meta data issue. Thanks for helping me everyone. I'll keep you posted. But I do believe an I 7 processor will at least help in the speed department  right?

  • Computer shuts down after inactivity.  Unable to revive.

Computer shuts down after few minutes of inactivity. Fans comes on and power light goes off. Unable to revive unless I "pull the plug" then do a normal reboot. This is something new started approx 3 months ago. I have toyed with the Energy Saver Preference, but only with the scheduling.

What iMac model is this? If it is an early iMac G5, it may be this issue:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
If you have a third party USB device hooked up when your machine goes asleep (into Energy Saver), it may affect the ability of the machine to wake up since USB goes into low power mode, and the two will be confused how to handle the wake up.
If it is an iMac that is over 4 years old, then it may need a new clock battery.
Check for dust in the power port and power cable.

Are you getting any sort of blue screen before the PC reboots? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard then Lion and the computer shut down after installation.
Now when it starts up it gets as far as the apple icon and then shuts down again
whenever I turn it on it loads that far and then closes.
    HELP!

Restore your bootable backup/clone  or Time Machine backup of Snow Leopard, launch Disk Utility from the install disc, repair the boot volume, and reinstall Lion.

  • Computer shuts down after 5-15 minutes

After 5-15 minutes of inactivity the computer shuts down when on battery. As long as the computer stays active, it will not shut down; ie: netflix watch now not a problem.
Support had me do a hard reset with battery removed; repair permissions; and reset pram; but the problem continues. The Leopard I am using is an upgrade, clean install with latest update. This behavior does not occur when I run the computer off of an external usb inclosure with old Tiger operating system, running on the original disk . So this suggests to me that it is a software and not hardware problem. Also when plugged in the computer will eventually quit and restart on its own.
Is there anything else to try or is archive and install the only option left because I have a corrupted Leopard install ??
    Thanks for any suggestions !!

    rakki,
Just curious. When did this problem start? Possibly when you upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5? (10.4.11 to 10.5.5 even?).
I'm having similar though not identical issues with battery performance that started the day I upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11.

  • Computer shuts down after unplugging the power cord

My computer is showing a Plugged in, not charging message, but it is at 88%.  When I unplug the charger from the computer to work somewhere else, the computer totally shuts down and will not power up unless the power charger is plugged in.  I tried taking the battery out and leaving the cord connected and the computer started fine.  How do I get the computer to stop shutting down after unplugging?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like battery #2 has a short. When the system detects a critically low battery, it is likely to devote all power to battery charge until the batery reaches 5% or so. Try each battery seperately. If no power at any time, remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter. Press the power switch for about ten seconds. Then connect the AC adapter, let it boot, then install the battery and check the charging status. This resets the power manager. I think one battery id bad, but you will need to test them one at a time. Good luck.

  • My computer shuts down after being unplugged

My powerbook G4 sometimes shuts down when I unplug it, even though the battery is fully charged. This seems to happen more often when I unplug it and then pick it up (or put it down). After I restart it, the clock and date have been reset to 1970.
Any ideas of what may be wrong?

    Hi c,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
How long does your PB run on the batt when it does not shut down after removing the power adapter? If a very short time, you may have a nearly dead batt, and the backup batt, even if it is still operational, only lasts a few minutes; once that is dead too, then date and time are reset.
I should have said this first, but just noticed that you said movement seems to cause the issue. That strongly suggests a loose battery. The "fix" can be as simple as wedging a thin piece of rubbery material between the battery compartment and the battery itself, on the side opposite the contacts, to make the contacts remain in contact at all times (earlier models had this issue, but it was supposedly fixed on later models, yet we still hear about it periodically).

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)

  • Computer shuts down after 10-15 minutes

My computer seems to work fine but when i turn it on I can only use it for 10 - 15 minutes before it shuts down.  It just goes black and turns off.  Could this be a problem with overheating?  The fan has been making a lot of noise and sounds like it might be out of balance.

Are you using a desktop tower? If so , where are you placing the tower for use , is it able to breath properly? I know a lot of people who think 3 to 4 inches of space is enough for a CPU to breath but in the end it can cause some bad problems such as dust buildup and overheating.

  • My computer shuts down after 45 seconds from when I push the power button. Anyone have an idea why?

After pushing and holding the power button on my Mac the apple screen comes on and after a few seconds there is a loading bar that tries to load something for a few seconds then it shuts down. I would say it is approximately 45-50 seconds after pushing the power button. Power comes on then shuts right off. This all originated when I tries to log in as a different user. It froze for a while, then I shut down the computer with the power button. Because I couldn't so it from the apple icon on the desk top

  • Computer Shuts Down After Being Powered On

    Hi All,
I have an iMac G5 right now that has a bit of a problem. I am able to turn on the computer, let it POST, and login. All is good through there. However, after using the computer for about 10-15 minutes, it all of a sudden shuts down. When I turn it back on, I am given no problems what so ever, and the mac acts like nothing ever happened. However, it will have the same problem again.
Any suggestions on what could be wrong, and if a part needs to be ordered, what part?
    Thanks =)

Welcome to Discussions - Depending on the model you may be eligible for Apple's Repair extension programs, since your computer is displaying power supply problems. It could also be another type of thermal problem, but check the repair program first.
