FCP7 text generator

I am using Chalkduster Font and the title is the last clip of my project. I have a dissolve fade out to black as my transition to end my project. My problem is
that I am getting the Fade to Black but my text gets thicker and brighter for about five frames and then fades to black. It looks like a flash on just the text.
How can I get rid of this text flash? Is it a combination of adjusting threshold-soft and fade out beginning and end placement? Thanks.

try editing a black matte on a track above and keyframing the opacity from 0 to 100%

What's wrong with Boris 3D Text Generator.....

I've tried to use this tool but the clunky interface and 10 second delay while you open this up in it's own window drives me crazy. But I am trying again to use Boris 3D for subtitles.
However, I just compared the text to FCP's text generator and Boris seems much softer and not nearly as crisp as FCP Text. The concern is that I have to render the FCP text - maybe this accounts for the difference? Boris does not give me a red line. So it's a dilemma - which to use? It's a pain to have to render subtitles - but Boris has that awful delay to deal with and just does not seem as crisp - any one any thoughts on this?

Not sure why you're getting no Real Time playback on the FCP text filter (red render bar) Regardless, even though the Boris titles will play back RT they ultimately need to be rendered as well (green render bar) and will likely look crisper once you do. Boris Title 3D should give you the best results. You could also try Live Type.

Is there a way to create a random text generator in AE 4 ?

Hi all,
I'm a new user of an old version of After Effects 4.1 on Windows 7.
I just gained the help on this forum to create a digital clock countdown with the Numbers Effect and the Timecode 30 setting in AE 4 and I noticed that there is a random numbers generator in that effect too.
But now I'm in the Text Effect and I'm able to put my text/title on the solid layer in a composition and apply some MM scripts to the text... mainly I've just been able to use the 'Blink' script and manipulate that script a little to make it flash faster or slower.
Since AE 4 cannot use .jsx scripts or Expressions, I guess I'm limited to MM scripts (which I've been searching for) and the built-in plug-ins and effects... but I can't find a random text generator... like where the text scrambles as if it is trying to break a code. This effect that I'm trying for would be similar to a scrambled text effect generated in Swish or other FLASH text effect generators.
So if anyone knows how to create a scrambled or random text effect in the old After Effects 4.1, please let me know.

Yes, I'm using AE 4.1, per my explanation in my other posts about the timecode effect and codecs.
Since there is a built-in random number generator in AE 4.1 that is part of the Numbers Effect, I thought there may still be an after market Effect, plug-in or mm script for a random text generator.
I've been searching the web, but its a big place.

Why is the text generator corrupting my sequence?

I'm trying to use the Text generator, but it's corrupting my sequence playback.
I keep having to quit FCE and restart it, in order to get my uncorrupted sequence playback to return.
Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can "reset" from within FCE, without quitting and restarting, in order to restore correct sequence playback?

Try trashing the FCE preferences.
Are you using the FCE text generator or Boris? (part of FCE)

Repeat Title Color in Text Generator

In Text Generator, how do I repeat the same shade of color picked on the color wheel?

In the color picker you can drag the color into a tray at the bottom to store it. The magnifying gloass is a color picker to let you suck a color from anywhere on the screen.

Text Generator button won't work

I am in the middle of getting a project done for this Monday. Last night, I was able to use the text generator button in the viewer. Today, it won't work. What have I done to disengage it? Help is needed quickly.

Yes, it is a drop-down menu and when I clicked on it, nothing happened—not even the tool tip. However, I just figured out the problem. Somehow, late last night when I was working, the cat began walking on the computer desk and keyboard. In my haste to get him out of the way, I must have clicked on the choice to show my preferred transitions and such only. I had been exploring some of the menus looking for a feature I couldn't remember how to access. Once I clicked on show all just now, I was back in business. Before I did that, I couldn't see any of the transition choices or other options under Effects. Whew, that's a relief. Now, keep your fingers crossed there are enough hours left in this weekend for me to finish this project before I have to show the presentation on Monday night. Off to get more coffee. Thanks for trying to help.

Wandering colors when animating text generator

Just tried a simple Basic Animation of font color in a generated text block for a title, as on pp 188-90 in The Book. Instead of going from pale blue to deep blue between keyframes, my text flickered through most of the rainbow. Tried reversing the circular arrow adjacent to the color swatch but it seemed to happen either way.
To tell the whole truth, the problem started when I used three keyframes in this short text generator (superimposed on a black slug.) I wanted the color to come up to bright blue and then darken to black along with a dissolve into the first clip of my sequence. Was this too much to ask FCE 3.5 to do?
Any ideas or insight appreciated.

Thanks, Tom. You've got my number - I probably got a little carefree with the buttonpushing, and of course the devil is in the details.
What I eventually did was revert all the way back to a clean sequence and settle for a simpler 2-keyframe effect, which did work fine. But now that I know it's possible I will try for the cooler up/down 3-keyframe effect again.

Boris 3D Text Generator?

I have Final Cut Studio 2 and when I launched Final Cut Pro 6 and tried to use the Boris 3D text generator and could not find it. I used this tool a lot in Final Cut Pro 5. Any ideas?

UPDATE!!
I finally figured it out...well it just started working. Here's what I did. I have G5 at work with final cut pro 5. I copied the BorisFX folder to my thumb drive and transfered the folder to my iMac at home and got this message. "A newer item "BorisFX" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you are moving?" I clicked stop and relaunched Final Cut Pro 6 and Boris was an option in the drop down...WOW!! Not sure what happen, but wanted to share this with everyone just in case you have the same problem I did.

Final Cut Express Text Generator - Custom Position

Is there a way to customize the position of the lower 3rd text generator? I'm looking to move it lower than its preset position.

Set the position to whatever you want it to be and make it a Favorite Effect.
Select the text effect and in the menu bar: Effects > Make Favorite.
Of course it might go haywire if you then try to use a different typeface or size.

Text Generator generates a straight line.

I am trying to place a paragraph in the video. It is rather lengthy. I know that I can edit it in Controls by hitting enter at the end of each line. But is there an easier way? It is quite cumbersome to do this because you don't know how long the line should be until you look at it in the video tab.
Please advise

Place the text generator clip in the Timeline, then double-click it to load into the Viewer. With the Timeline playhead on the clip, as you enter changes in the Viewer, you should see them in the Canvas.

Help on Lock Up in Scrolling Text Generator

I'm finally getting to use my copy of FCE HD (V 3.0) eventhough I've had it since last summer and I'm having a problem.
When I start the scrolling text generator, I can use all of the controls EXCEPT for the color button. As soon as I click the SQUARE to pull up the pallet and the pallet comes up, the machine locks up except for the mouse. Abosolutely nothing works to close the pallet or close anything else for that matter. I have to push the Power button on the machine to turn it off.
I've used the color pallet in many other controls with no problem.
Is this a bug?
I have searched but haven't found anything like it reported by anyone else.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tom thanks for the "deeper" tip, it's what had my brain going when I went to the "plist" file in preferences and discovered it's last modified date was 1970.
Ian thanks for the instructions on how to get to the pref's.
The epiphany occurred as I saw that date and realized that I had been ignoring the little window that had popped up on the last months startups that said the time was messed up.
I realized that my little battery had gone dead but kept using the machine anyhow since nothing seemed to be malfunctioning.
Well sports fans, the time being off was the source of the problem. After I reset it to current time and date, I was able to use the color picker right away without incident.
Interestingly enough, the color pickers in Live Type were working just fine AND the Color Correction in FCE were working just fine.
Eventhough I have a B.S.C.S., I would have never in a million years guessed that the clock had any impact on text scrolling.
All I can say is "Bob's your uncle" Ian & Tom.

More than 1 line of text when using text generator from file?

hi
have 8 line blocks of text to show onscreen.
would like to use text generatorn>from file
all they seem to print is one line.
is there a work around?
have trhied soft returns and paragraphs on saved text file.
no change.
anyonre know how to get 2 or more lines of text?

Select the File generator layer and in the Inspector, select the Layout pane and in Layout controls, set the Layout Method to Paragraph. Narrow your margins and the text will "flow" into multiple lines.
You can also keyframe the paragraph layout position. [Probably more info than you want here.]
That said, you can only display *one line* at a time per File Generator. (If you're up to date with Motion [v5.1.2], you can use more than one File generator.) The generator does not accept any other characters for returns other than newline and carriage return.
I've never tried it, but thinking about it, you can set Tab stops in the Paragraph layout (double click in the layout rectangle and a ruler should appear over the top -- right click on the ruler to set tabs). If you go back into the original text file and where you need to break lines into two or more, setting a left tab stop in the layout very near the end of a line might force the tabbed text into the next line (did I make that clear enough??)

Saving text generated by script as an html file

I have designed a script that generates text which I would like to save as an html file called 'index.html' on my desktop. Is it possible to do this using TextEdit or some other application?

You don't need to use an app to accomplish this. The following will take the contents of a variable myHTML, create a file test.html, write to it, and close it.
If you are generating the HTML in a loop, you can write to the file as it's generated or - as here - put it all into a single variable and write in one go.
You'll probably want to specify a complete path for the file!
set myHTML to "some html"
set theFile to open for access file "test.html" with write permission
set eof theFile to 0 --empties file if it contains anything
write myHTML to theFile
close access theFile

How to cut and paste long Word document into text generator?

I have a very long list of attributions in a Word document.
When I cut and paste it into the "Sample Text" area, it goes in fine.
But when I try to look at it ... either as simple text or, preferred, scrolling ... I only get parts of the document.
I can correct it by adding a 'return' in the middle of every few words.
But my document is so long, it would take a long time to do that one by one.
Solutions sought: How to just import the whole document and have it scroll, zip-zip?!

Thank you DH and skalaki, I had not known of the Boris title generator. Funny, I had looked in the FCE online manual until 'titling' and editing text ... didn't see mention of that.
In any case ... I've now found it and trust I'll be able to figure it out.
