FCP7: White Viewer and White Canvas (set to RGB)

Hello,
I had been using the universal version of the first Final Cut Studio for a few years now without any issue. When I upgraded to FCS3, I can't get FCP7 to show any footage (or even Color Bars) in the Viewer or Canvas. You hear the audio of the footage but it's all WHITE. Both frames are set to RGB (not alpha).
I have fully re-installed FCP7 but I still see the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what easy setup I use either.
I can take the same DV or HDV footage and play it in Quicktime outside of FCP7 so I'm confident that my onboard graphics card is not having some sort of trouble.
I have a case open with AppleCare but so far they have not resolved this issue.
Is this White Viewer and Canvas issue happening to anyone else here?
Thanks.

Trash your preferences?
#44: FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Color settings in viewer and canvas?

Have been experimenting with some custom presets of the Canon XH A1.
After importing in FCP the footage seemed very colorful -- mostly much warmer.
Played the same clips in quicktime and they looked completely different, much more nuanced, natural and as intended.
Is there a way to change the color settings of the viewer and the canvas in FCP?
    thanks

#49 - Quicktime movie lighter than what I see in FCP.
Shane's Stock Answer #49 - Why is the Quicktime Movie I made much lighter than what I see in my timeline in FCP?
Because it is designed to be bright enough to be seen on most monitors, some that might be too dark. But, if you want to see the same image you see in your FCP timeline, just open Quicktime, and in the Quicktime Player's preferences window under the General tab you can choose to Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility.

  • My Biggest Complaint is the Combined Viewer and Events Window

I, like most editors, work on two monitors. Personally with FCP 7 I keep my Bins and my Favorite Effects on my second monitor and have my viewer and my Canvas and timeline in the main window.
Now if I want to make my Events (formerly Bin) usable I would put them on the second monitor, but then the Viewer and where I have to scrub is moved to the second display, and that is really inconvenient as compared to have the Viewer and Canvas window next to each other on the same screen. Why would I want to scroll on a second display and watch so far away.
    This drives me crazy!

This is something that actually makes a function much harder to use, so is a legitimate complaint.

  • White Viewer and Canvas screens in FC Studio & Not an Idiot

    iMac
    2.66 GHz Core Duo
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    FCS 3
The viewer and canvas have apparently decided to flip to white and remain there. But first, they decided they'd rather display a strange, posterized/solarized version of whatever clip was loaded at the time.
Viewer prefs set properly to RGB
    Background set to black.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Any ideas?

Viewer prefs set properly to RGB<</div>
Okay, you know that one. Good.
    Background set to black. <</div>
    Completely irrelevant. Not good.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail. <</div>
Right, but a restart of FCP or the Mac might also be part of that debug just to rule out all possibilities.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail. <</div>
Of course. Reinstalling Apple software is the LAST thing we'd suggest. Well, it's the last thing I would suggest. It is almost always a complete waste of time for a long list of reasons but mainly for only one: unlike Windows apps, Apple software just doesn't work that way.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC <</div>
Okie dokie. When you play this clip in QT what happens?
when you launch Motion and attempt to run a previously saved comp what happens?
    Any ideas? < </div>
Debugging your particular issue is not going to be easy. Trying to figure out if it's FCP, QT, your graphics card, your monitor, or some other weird and obscure setting is a question, largely, of having a good feel for your system's behaviors and application inventory and history.
Stick with it, we're going to be asking you some really idiotic questions and asking you to perform some really lame tests.

  • Cant see any video only white screens in Viewer and Canvas

I dont know if anyone has encountered this figured out how to resolve it yet. In FCP 7 on Snow Leopard when i drag a clip into viewer or try to edit in the Canvas all i see is a white screen. The title safe lines and wireframe show up when i turn these on and off, but no video. I occasionally get a solarized image in the Canvas. the time code progresses, but nothing in either window.
    Thanks for any insights.

Thanks for all the suggestions, including links back to earlier discussions. This did shed some light, (and kicked me to be more explicit), when reviewing an earlier question on the same issue, but stating that this happened on an external Dell 2408 monitor...which is what I am using to edit. When i open the MBP and remove the video miniport cable and try to play on the laptop display, all is well, I can see video in both Viewer and Canvas. When i plug the monitor back in and drag these windows over to the monitor (cant move the FCP application wholesale) they also play fine. When i close the MBP, wait and refire it up with mouse or keyboard...I see video in both, but when i play either one the image jumps back and forth, cycling from one frame and back...while the time code advances and the audio track does too.

  • I now get a blank (white) screen in the Viewer.  Can still drop video from the viewer into the canvas, but don't see it in the viewer.  Please help!

It doesn't seem to matter what project I'm working on... the picture in the viewer is gone.  All I see is a blank (white) screen.  If I put the cursor over the viewer and drag to the timeline, the clip will appear on the time line (and in the canvas) but I don't see it in the viewer.  I usually edit my clips in the viewer and not on the canvas.  Can anyone explain why this might be happening and how I might fix.  I'm suspecting I must have messed up one of the settings but I'll be darned if I can figure out which one or how to fix.  Please help!

David.  Thank you very much.   The problem was not with the canvas but rather the Viewer.  But the solution was the same.  Somehow, the Viewer window was re-set to Alpha.  I changed it back to RGB.... and the picture is back.   These issues are often very simple.... but they can drive you bats if you don't know the answer.   Very grateful.  Tim

  • Image contains camera White Balance setting; LR 5.5 only shows "As Shot", "Auto", and "Custom"

I have a new, Panasonic DMC-GX7. I shot a bunch of photos as JPGs. When viewing their Exif data using Exiftool, I can clearly see the camera's White Balance setting, as well as the Color Temp Kelvin, WB Red Level, WB Green Level, and WB Blue Level. However, Lightroom 5.5 only shows "As Shot", "Auto", and "Custom" when I click White Balance under Quick Develop on the Library tab or WB under Basic on the Develop tab. Exiftool shows the Exif Version as 0230 and the Panasonic Exif Version as 0405. Is LR looking for the white balance information in some other field? Do I need to configure it somehow for my camera? I am new to LR (but not to image processing), so could use some help figuring this out.

The whole question is not so simple as converting to DNG. Yes DNG is openly documented, yes the file can be read, but that does not mean it can be correctly interpreted by other software in the future and the best you can then do is starting the PP of your images from scratch. Imagine a DNG with LR adjustments that in some years you open the file in another software, possibly non-Adobe. Even if the file can be read it will not look the same, as the Adobe specific developing instructions could not be strictly followed. Even if all software manufactures agreed on a common set of adjustments, let's say everybody had a Highlights slider and a Clarity slider and so on, which is unlikely, the results would still be different as the underlying algorithms would be different.
Disclaimer: I only shoot raw and firmly believe it is the best option, but one must be conscious it has some shortcomings related to the future of our images.

  • Don't have full screen view since changing to 19 inch screen. Have about 2 inches of white space on each side. Changed to compact view and then back. No change

I got a larger monitor and flat screen (19 inch). Since changing I am not getting a full screen view of home page. I changed the page options to compact view and then back, but no change. I've got about 2 inches of white on each side of the home page view.

When going to a website the picture was small - tried changing the Zoom size , tried Zoom Reset - the text did change size but the layout distorts - found under View - Zoom - Zoom Text Only was checked --- Removed this check mark and the website returned to normal size and Zoom worked normally again. I am 99.9999% sure I did NOT check this myself and there is no one else on the computer to cause it. Maybe this will help.

  • Issues with White Balance and other camera setting...

I have found a glitch with the camera on the Lumia 800: When you try to change a different white balance setting- (try it with incandescent so you can see the difference) as well as changing the scene (ie to portrait mode) it will flip back to auto white balance, although it will say that it is still incandescent.  If you change the scene first and then the white balance and save those settings, it will take one picture like that and then revert back to auto white balance again for the next shot, but again it will tell you that it is still incandescent. (You can clearly see the white balance difference between the 2 shots, even though the camera settings say they should be the same). The whole point of saving settings is so that you can take multple shots with the same settings.  I have spent hours on the phone to Nokia trying to explain this to them and they have assured me that it will be fixed in the next update.  I took the phone back to the Orange shop and we tried 3 different handsets and they all had the same problem.
I also have the same problem with video autofocus that  lots of people have mentioned.  Has anyone found a solution yet?  The main reason I got this phone (only last week) was for the camera so I am diappointed.  I am a photographer so I am really fussy about cameras!  They have said in the Orange shop that I can change the Lumia for another phone, such as a Galaxy S2, which is also an awesome phone.  The thing is, I really love the Lumia otherwise.  I really like the fact that I don't have an iPhone anymore, for a start!!
Does anyone think the network you are on makes a difference? It's just that several people have suggested that there could be a conflict with the Orange software and the Nokia/Windows software.  Does anyone else have this problem who is not with Orange?

Thanks for all of your valuable suggestions.
The problem was compounded when there were drastic shifts in the levels of ambient light also occuring at the same time.
    Happy Holidays to everyone.

  • Can you remove the camera white balance setting in Aperture

I have a Canon 7D and use Aperture for processing and storing my images.
With the Canon I shoot both video and still and frequently adjust the white balance in the camera.  I make a frequent mistake in leaving the wrong white balance setting on - eg when taking video indoors in the evening  I set the white balance to indoors (the Canon seems poor at white balance decision making on video) and then I forget I'm not using auto white balance and switch to taking a photo with flash.  The result is a horrible blue photo - which if I don't spot the problem at the time seems very hard to correct afterwards.
I use the Aperture white balance adjustments frequently but unless there is a patch or white or grey I an use the dropper on, I find this particular situation seems to be right off the scale of what I can fix in Aperture.  I end up with sliders at the extremes of the scales and no intuitive sense of what numbers to type in manually to try and get realistic colour - so I often end up discarding these photos even if the shot itself is something I'd like to use.
So my question is given I'm importing RAW, is there a way to show the phoo without the (wrong) white balance setting I applied in the camera, to let me choose white balance from scratch?
Or if not, do you have any advice about how to adjust from this very bluey unrealistic colour of image?

Kirkby - thanks for the quick reply.
Didn't know you could drag inside a value field - that's helpful.
But being able to get different numbers on the slider isn't the root of my problem.
In a specific example I have two photos - one taken with white balance set to flash and the photo was with flash, where after a bit of tweaking to get the colour I want the temp slider is at 5000K (and tint 0).  The second photo has my shooting error with interior lighting white balance but taken with flash.  The two shots were taken from almost the same point of the same view (but different people in frame).  The shot with the white balance error comes off camera horribly blue coloured. I can fiddle with the two sliders - I take temperature to 20000K and tint to 40 to do the best with it I can, and with those settings one of the two faces is approaching flesh colour but the wall behind the subjects (which is a light blue in reality) is now appearing light yellow in places.  I just can't get a good looking colour effect no matter ow extreme the slider settings.
I may have phrased my question badly - as I totally agree you can't show a raw without a colour setting - so maybe I'm better asking to be able to use a different colour setting on the raw data rather than having to start with adjustments on top of my white balance mistake.
Given the two shots were in the same place against the same background and the same lighting (both with flash) it seems to me I ought to be able to get a similar colour effect on both and I just can't.  To illustrate here are the two photos (the one on the left was shot with flash wb and in Aperture I'm viewing it with 5000K and 0 tint, the one on the right was shot with indoor wb and in Aperture I'm viewing it with 20000K and 40 tint and it looks terrible!)

  • Black background in viewer and canvas

    Hello
I applied blue/green filter to my clip, it is showing a black background when I play it in viewer but white background when I just view it?
    ANy ideas?

Click on the % above the Canvas and Viewer and then select FIT TO WINDOW. If the gray is still there, manually resize the window to get rid of it.
    It has always been gray.

  • Color profile for Viewer and Canvas?

I've noticed that the color of the video in the FCPro 4.5 Viewer and Canvas looks absolutely nothing like the color when I output to DVD or QuickTime movie. (The video in FCPro seems to be much darker.) Is there a way to make the Viewer and Canvas look more analagous to what I'm going to get on final output?
    Thanks.

Nope. Computer monitors colors have such a wide range that they are very unreliable. This is why it is best to hook up a TV, or better yet a properly calibrated NTSC Monitor (the latter only if you are producing professional video).
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • 16:9 viewer and canvas

Ok, this is a simple thing, yet it is bothering me. Every time I see a picture of someone using FCE, the viewer and canvas are widescreen. I can't seem to get my canvas and viewer to be widescreen. I can work with widescreen just fine, but I have grey bars above and below the image. My viewer and canvas are in 4:3 ratio. Can anyone explain how to get the viewer and canvas into a 16:9 ratio?
    Thanks
    Alex

I am assuming that you are working with standard definition DV but have the camera set to the 16:9 setting? If so, you need to change the Easy Setup setting to DV-NTSC Anamorphic. After changing that setting create a new Project, or from the current project, just create a new Sequence (since the existing default first Sequence will still be using the DV-NTSC setting). Once you open the new Sequence, click Window, Arrange and choose one of the existing settings (Standard, Compositing, or Small Windows). The Viewer and Canvas window should automatically switch to the widescreen 16:9 format with no grey bars. The Browser and Timeline windows will also resize to match the changes in the Viewer and Canvas.

  • FCE un synching vid/aud between Viewer and Canvas 3 secs out in 20 sec clip

    OK
I'm new to FCE having moved across from Vegas Video.
Working through the Izzy FCE Tutorial.
Starts with a 20 second HD clip that works great in the Viewer.
Drag video to time line and it looks OK except the audio is waaaaay out of wack. In a 20 second clip FCE is 3 seconds out of synch by the end of the clip.
I must have done something freaky here but I have searched and searched but cannot find an option to un synch audio/video.
    Also other weird stuff.
If I have 6 clips in the browser, drag each one to the Viewer, set the In and Out drag the first one to the timeline and subsequent ones to the the Canvas/Overwrite.
Only the first clip will show until I start playing the first clip in the timeline then all the others then suddenly pop up.
Also, Edit/Undo has an accelerator of CMD Z, nope that doesn't do anything.
If I set the edit point in the timeline mid clip, then drag a new clip from the Viewer to the Canvas and select insert, it inserts the video at the edit point but puts the audio somewhere completely different. The Audio timeline shows the audio in the right place but when you play it is randomly placed earlier in the timeline.
This is all very strange indeed and leaves a noob to FCE well and truly confused.
I'll try another reboot. But this puppy is looking like it may be going back to the Apple shop.

"Starts with a 20 second HD clip"
What exactly are the specifications of your clips? How did you get them into FCE?
"Only the first clip will show until I start playing the first clip in the timeline then all the others then suddenly pop up."
Sounds like you don't have the timeline set to fit to window Shift-Z.
"Edit/Undo has an accelerator of CMD Z"
Have no idea what this means.

  • Removing blue cast/tint from JPG (wrong white balance setting while taking picture)

    Hi,
Photosohop newb here, still using CS3 (10.0), so please be patient.
I was at a convention not long ago, where I took lots of pictures with my phone. I only noticed at home, that a few of the pictures came out with an intense blue cast because of a bad white balance setting (I must have accidentally changed it).
I was trying to fix the image for the last 2 hours, with no real luck. I tried everything under Image -> Adjustments -> "Auto Color", "Color Levels" and "Match Color", moving the sliders up and down to get the best match. The best I could come up with was still far away from the other pictures I took the same day.
Here is one of the bad pictures: http://imgur.com/vw12aTQ
And here is one I took just a minute later with the "normal" setting: http://imgur.com/RMFm7fo
I actually got a pretty good match by cutting out some of the cobblestones from both pictures and using "Match Color" -> "Source", but I couldn't apply this technique to the whole picture.
Could somebody please help me to make the colors of the first picture similar to the second one?
    Thank you,
    Roland

    Here's an easy fix...
Choose Image - Adjust - Curves, then click the Gray Point dropper and sample something in the image that should be a neutral gray - say one of the stones on the ground.  Click in various places until you like what you see.
