FCPX 10.0.9 is slow

Just updated to 10.0.9 and my edit is now interrupted continuously by the 'spinning wait cursor' the rainbow ball
Even (I just did this) opening the about this version window creates a lengthy pause - closing it creates another lengthy pause followed by FCPX (not responding) error
Moving the playback cursor on the timeline takes forever - playback otherwise seems fine
This version seems unusable
My system is otherwise unchanged from previous FCPX version when everything ran well
Mac Pro 10.8.4 3.2Ghz Quad core 24GB DDR3
FCPX 10.0.9 Transcoding create optimised and proxy media both ticked
External HD for edit material
Any thoughts?

Sometimes the error message will indicate a frame number.
If not, take a look at Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenace Tools. It can do a lot of things including identifying  and repairing problem media files. They offer a short trial.
Often the problem is a render file which is why you see the advice to clear out the render files and turn off BG rendering.

  • FCPX 10.1.3 Extremely slow and unstable - totally unusable

Hi there, I desperately need a fix for this.
I recently updated my FCPX to 10.1.3 after a couple of weeks away on work, and now upon resuming work on projects I had been working on without any problems before, FCPX becomes unusable - it is slow, refuses to render, ends up hanging up my whole iMac until I eventually manage to force quit FCPX.
I have tried deleting preferences on start up of FCPX but this has not helped.
I am working on a couple of large corporate pieces on a tight deadline and now I can't so much as change a single title, whereas before I was flying through it.
What the **** are Apple thinking?! This is a professional application (apparently) and I need it to function properly so that I can earn my bloody wages!

Please somebody help, or give me a direct line to Apple support...

No  2 computers are exactly alike  .  .  .  everybody has them set up differently with different combinations of apps etc.
There are an almost infinite number of permutations possible and some of these can cause conflicts with other apps or the computer itself.
The fact that most people have no problems suggests that, assuming we can discount user error, there is probably some conflict occurring.
As the permutations of computer setups can be almost limitless there is no way Apple or anyone else can guard against conflicts arising occasionally.
This is one reason why warnings are given to back up everything and not to update apps in the middle of a project.
There are a number of general troubleshooting strategies you can try:-

  • Motion in FCPX - click lag, hanging, tortuously slow rendering

    Hello Colleagues,
I have 2 iMacs of different generations, both up-to-spec and up-to-date on OS, FCP, and Motion.
I am experiencing very poor performance when using Motion "generator" graphics: lag, hanging, slow renders, and sometimes even crashing.
I have verified folder permissions, verified fonts, eliminated all converted events/libraries from pre-10.1 - pretty much everything except uninstalling, trashing prefs, and reinstalling fresh.
Still, FCP seems to be FIGHTING ITSELF, with iStat showing that more than half of CPU effort is being used by "system" instead of "user" at any given moment (when Motion assets are present and enabled).
The performance is far poorer than it ever was on FCP7 with Motion 4, and it is far worse than FCP10.0.x with Motion 5 (one of my machines was previously used with FCP7, however, the newer one has been FCPX since its unboxing day in early 2013).
Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step in troubleshooting this problem?
    Thanks,
    Eric - CoralVision

Yay it's Luis and Russ! Hello colleagues!
Luis: I tink I posted a link to one of the troublesome assets for you, but I limped through the completion of that project by keeping the inspector closed. I still suffered lots o click-lag, spinny balls, and, at the end, an overnight render, but I got through. This was on a 90minute show choir concert that had about 12x 8 second lower 3rds, and about 3 minutes of full screen titles, rolls, and credits. All of the FCP generator assets were made by me from scratch in Motion5. The current post relates to a similar problem, but on a different machine with different assets. The current complaint is from my slightly older iMac (lower power than the new one but still quite capable when using the former versions of this software), and the generators came from Motion projects which were originally created in Motion4. So unless there is something wrong with my practice in using FCPX generators, something in common across the 4 or 5 projects where I have experienced similar problems, I think that a corrupt template is an unlikely explanation.
Russ: I run my systems stock - that is to say that the only 3rd party plugins I have installed are the Canon EOS and XF plugins I use for ingesting media. I don't have any plugins related to MoGraph, editing, rendering, or memory management. These are custom generators that I am creating, chasing the "template" functionality I used to enjoy between Motion and FCP7. So yes, user generated custom generators - and I have had similar problems with several batches of varying complexity and varying origin.
For now I will just have to adapt, observe, and troubleshoot. I have a sneaky feeling that I am doing something wrong in the way I am setting up the motion projects for publication, but I will surely announce it loudly if I learn anything new.
    Thanks for checking in, fellows!

  • I am having a hard time with fcpx, it is running so slow.  i upgraded my ram to 12 and have cleaned up my computer to run faster and have changed all my files to proxy files but it is still running SO slow.  please help!

I am having a hard time with my fcp x running so slow.  i can't even move my mouse without the time wheel coming on and staying up for at least 20 some seconds.  I have upgraded my ram to 12 and changed all my files to proxy files; also i cleaned the crap out of my computer removing all other media files I didn't need and it is still running the same.  Please help!  I have a deadline on my short film to be submitted and I can't finish it like this.  Oh also it ran fine in the beginning but and one day it just started doing this out of no where.  Anything will help!  Thanks

In addition have you got FileVault switched on as that will kill performance.

  • FCPX and whole system gets slower by the day

I am using FCPX on Mountian Lion on a mid 2010 MacBookPro with full RAM and a boot drive that is more than half empty.
My computer can barely cope anymore with video editing and is generally very laggy even when video is not rendering.
What should I do? Should I get new MBP or iMac?

Is your question about the specs of the raw original media I am editing?
Yes I am using a seperate drive connected by FW800. Projects and events are all on the same drive.
My computer is generally laggy even when not editing or rendering.
When I switch back to FCPX from another program the system just freezes and i get the spinning circle of death for up to thirty seconds.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) so slow!!!

My Macbook Pro (Early 2011) with intel dual - core i7 4 gb RAM so slow. It came with Snow Leaopord and upgraded it to Lion, then uprgaded it to Mountain Lion. Whenever I run one of the Adobe CS5 apps it gets reeeeaaaaaaalllllllyyyy slow. It used to not get slow at all. Also when I have FCPX open it gets really slow. I used to be able to run Photoshop and Safari at the same time and now it is really slugish and slow. Is there anthing I can do to  clean it up and make t run faster?
    Thanks

Follow Sig's suggeston in adding more RAM.
Photoshop and FCP are RAM dependent applications.  With 4GB of RAM, open activity monitor and see your page outs and swap used.
    I have 16GB installed - page outs - 0. swap used - 0.  see image below.
8GB should be a perfect upgrade for what you're using it for.
    Good luck.

  • FCPX for Macbook Pro 2011

    Hello,
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro, more recently I have been wanting to get into video editing my GoPro footage. I am using FCPX but it work so slow. Rendering takes forever and even looking back at the footage is very choppy.  Is there anything I can do to make the program work better on my mac or is there another program anyone can suggest that work work better with my mac. Could someone also explain to me why I am having trouble viewing back my footage smoothly?
    Thank you for the help.

Sorry that was a mistake... Its a mid 2010 model- Not 2011.
what do you mean is media optimized? I don't think so, its just raw footage- mp4 I believe.

  • 50i and 50p footage in one Event?!

I’m doing a wedding on Friday.  Last minute thing as their official personal pulled out.
Have obtained two Canon XA10s that record in 24p or 50i (New Zealand).  Will most likely do 50i.
Have also obtained a GoPro Hero3 for some random shots and to have a bit of a play.
I can record GoPro at 1080/50p (or many other options) and the Canon’s will be 1080i….
When I have all the footage, what is the best way to import the footage onto an Event on FCPX.  What kind of event settings should I be using and do I have to do anything special?
    Many thanks,
    Steve

Okay, so have now shot the wedding footage.  probably about 3 hours of HD footage on two cameras.
I am now having to hire a mac to install my version of FCPX onto as my current mac no longer handles it.
I have been offered the following Mac at a decent rate....   For the editing of the HD footage, will this mac support FCPX and not be tooooo slow with rendering etc...   ?!
    13" MacBook Pro Dual Core 2.7GHz i7, 4GB, 500GB model A1278

  • I mac getting hanged always

    Hi friends,
    I'm using a 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5 with 8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 memory and the OS is 10.6.8.
Always when i try working with FCPX, I feel its pretty slow to the older version.
I'm currently working a feature film shot in RED.
The entire movie I edited in FCP 7 @ 2K(2048*1024)
Never it showed any such problem.
I never completed an entire project in FCP X.
But always when I try to learn the interface, if i apply some plugins or effects its getting hanged.
Can I do anything to solve this issue?

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Lost compound clip?

After doing a lot editing I shut down final cut x and when I reopened it had lost one of my compound clips for some reason?  It makes no sense because it saved the my most recent edits and just didn't save that compound clip. It is a wedding that I am working on and I make compound clips of different sections such as Pre-Wedding, Photo shoot, Ceremony.. etc.. It didn't save the photo shoot compound clip. I was thinking that maybe I could check the autosave vault and it would be something I can recover but fcp doesn't have the vault anymore. Is there something I am missing or a reason why this would happen?

The compound clip was in a project, and the media still there. As a backup I duplicated the complete project before I started with the compound clip, so I lost all the work done on this compound...
The problem happened when I quit FCPX, because it was too slow, I quit FCPX with the compound clip opened (in use), then I started FCPX again, and the compound clip wasn't there. It was like the compound clip never existed in the project.

  • FCPX 10.1 Very slow on iMac and lots of spinning beach balls

I have noticed since I have started to use FCPX 10.1 on my Late 2012 iMac (32GB RAM, 680MX Graphics, i7 quad core, thunderbold Arecca Raid) I am getting lots of spinning beach balls and things are generally slower.
I am really hoping Apple thought about people who cannot affored a Mac Pro, and ensure the performance is also good on iMacs, but unfortunately I am seeing a drop in performance compared to 10.0.9.
Has anyone else with an iMac noticed this?

Same experience after upgrading to 10.1 on mid 2011 27" imac 3.4 i7 16GB of RAM. I was midway through a project when I upgraded but I also made a copy of 10.0.9 and the project so i could go back to it if anything went sideways. The project is all RED 4K and it was smooth as could be before the upgrade. Now if you just want to grab a clip and move it around the timeline there is a three second delay before you can do so. Even just grabbing an audio file and moving it a couple frames forward causes it throw a beach ball up. Play back of the timeline is perfect though, no dropped frames or anything.
As it is right now I'm loading up 10.0.9 and finishing this project. After it's done I will try and start a library from scratch and see if that makes a difference. Right now, 10.1 is just unusable for me unfortunatley.
I really hope they didn't just make my iMac obsolete.

  • Fcpx rendering too slow

    Hi i've a macbook pro (early 2011) i7 2.0Ghz with 8Gb RAM.
I use FCPX with background rendering off.
The performance of FCPX editing it's slow but when I render my clip it's extremely slow!
It takes about 6 hours to render a non very complex clip of 6 min!! I use compressor 4 without multi-pass rendering....
What's the problem?? I think my macbook has enough power... i7 2.0Ghz, 8Gb ram ddr3...

Your MBP is good for editing with FCP10, just make sure you have these things right:
    1. If your MBP is early 2011 it will have two graphics processors inside, a standard Intel and a faster Radeon. Make sure that your Energy Saver settings are set to "Higher Performance" so that you use the Radeon for editing. Here's how you do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3256
    2. Always store your FCP10 events and projects on a decent external drive, NEVER on your boot drive. Do NOT use USB drives for video editing as USB does not provide sustained data transfer, so it is not really for for feeding continuous video streams. FireWire is very good, Thunderbolt is spectacular.
    3. Highly compressed formats such as MP4 (and mp3) put a lot of strain on your system resources. Although your MBP may be fit to work with such formats natively you will work much, much faster when you have such formats converted to higher quality edit-friendly formats such as ProRes for video and AIFF for audio proior to editing. You can optimize your media during the import process (Create Optimized Media) or you can do the conversion from the Events Browser after the media have been imported. You will notice an important gain in editing speed.
    4. Make sure background rendering is turned off while you edit. You can always render manually whenever you wish. If you have imported a lot of media and FCP10 is still busy doing its background magic (conforming, creating thumbnails etc...) this may also slow down your editing. Check the Activity Monitor to see if you still have background processes running.
    5. Do not export (Share) straight from the timeline. Export a QT movie from your project and bring this movie into Compressor for further conversions. This is a much, much faster process and in FCP10 this does not make any difference with regards to the quality of your final movie.
    Best wishes,
    Ronny

  • How to slow down FCPX titles in motion?

In FCPX I can slow down the tiles motions by dragging the tiles out.
But that does not always help.
So I try to use Motion to slow down the typing tile in FCPX. I get it to work by doing this:
But in FCPX the clip is too long. The speed is ok, and the text in the title behaves beautiful, but when the motion text is finished typing the clips is still too long and empty.
By shortening it by dragging it will of course effect the speed of the typing again.
    Guide anyone?

  • Fcpx so slow to load now

    question:
    Any help would be appreciated,
I have 32 gig of ram - 1 Tb hardrive- used about 700 gigs already-
FCPX is now soooo slow to load-  I am using 2 external harddrives for media - they ar pretty loaded but now all of
a sudden it takes 30 minutes to open FCPX.
    why?
    DF

Hard to know from your description. Where are your projects and events – on your boot drive or external?
How full is "pretty loaded"? What percentage is free on those two external drives?
If those two external media drives are full of projects and events that FCP can see and they are all getting loaded when the app is opened, that could be a reason. If that's the case, hide the projects and events.

  • Render of motion5 clip extremely slow only in FCPX

    Hello;
Il did a generator in Motion, and then sent it to FCPX. It uses brushs (I mean a bezier curve with chalk style)
In motion, the Ram preview take approx 5 sec for the whole timeline.
When I render it in FCPX it takes approximately ... 1 hour!
I don't understand why. Has averyone the same problem. Any solution?
I need a brush render, not a simple bezier white line, but it's really toooo long.
Detail : when FCP calculates, the activité on my 4 core iMac take th all 4 processors, each with 80% used for the system (red) and the rest in green.
    Thanks

We're seeing long render times with Motion generators sent to FCP X as well. Short moves of text have caused render times to exceed 4 hours on a 30 minute video. This is on an i7 Intel iMac with 16 GB of RAM and a 12 TB RAID so as not to slow things down!
Trying to find the locution here but haven't had any luck yet.
