FCPX 10.1 Chroma Key Strength Slider Crash

I will apologize in advance as I am just the IT guy and am not well versed in editing lingo, but here it goes. My chief editor came to me with a problem that he has had since the first FCPX. I will post the crash report below, but I will tell you that I don't think hardware is an issue. I have reproduced this crash on everything from iMac and Mac Minis to Macbook Pros new and old. If it matters they are all rocking NVIDIA cards. We use a green screen chroma key and everything works swimingly until you attempt to adjust the slider for Strength. The keying effects are made in motion and executed in Final Cut. Upon attempting to adjust the slider, FCPX hangs for roughly 10 seconds and then ultimately crashes.
Here is everything I have tried (in no particular order, but I assure you I have been scanning forums for days and troubleshooting has been executed in the correct order)
1. Complete reinstall of Mavericks, also attempted on Mountain Lion
2. Complete removal and reinstall of FCPX, Motion, and Compressor (yes I used that FCP remover tool one time too)
3 Trashed preferences, saved application states, layouts, etc.
4. Rebuilt Key effects from scratch
5. Installed CUDA Drivers
6. Removed and/or reinstalled plugins (Sony XDCAM)
7. Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory.
8. Repaired Disk Permissions
9. Checked the Activity Monitor during crash for other CPU/GPU intensive processes
10. Deleted used and unused render files in FCPX
11. Set to optimize imported media (problem originally existed without it checked, checking did not fix, but I digress)

Thanks I wasn't sure about the CUDA/OpenCL thing. Graphics terminology I am slowly learning about basically through the advent of crypto.
In the computers that are used primarily for editing we have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2 GB VRAM. They have 32 GB RAM. I just got hired on but when the op manager bought these (Late 2012) he basically fully speced them out. 1 TB Fusion Drive (which I would totally get if they are causing the issue) and the 3.4 GHz i7.
I just got in but I have the editor trying things out with my USB 3.0 Wallet drive. Really I am just looking for any improvement in efficiency as what I really want to do in the long term is pull out our old CAT5 cables, wire the building for 10 GBe, and set up an XTarget SAN.
Finally, in terms of video codecs we are using Sony XDCAM HD422, which I assume is ProRes. We are also working with graphics and videos that are not the same such as videos downloaded from the internet if that makes a difference. However the chroma key effect is only being placed on the footage from the camera.

can I completely customise a colour selection? I have a shot with a lot of blue in it, deliberately, and a small area of green, basically a mini-green screen, that I want to key out. whenever I add the chroma key filter to it it seems to automatically remove the blue. I've tried using refine key>sample colour to choose the green, which works, but only adds the green to the blue. using the colour selection produces the same effect, I can't move the blue line beyond the blue section.
what I'm assuming is happening is that FCPX is automatically detecting the blus in the shot and "deciding" for me that this is the colour to remove, which it isn't. I can't find a way to use chroma keyer without this incredibly annoying automatic feature turned on. I've tried to 'reset parameters' in the chroma key inspector which just removes any adjustments I've made.
I'm new to FCPX having had to move from FCP7 because all our college computers got upgraded. I'm used to being able to use the old key effects where you could select very specific colours and have complete control over range, spill, etc. so this new lack of control is incredibly frustrating.
thanksI've tried reseting every one of the seperate selections and nothing happened. playing around with it more I've found that dropping the strength to 0%, effectively removing the key and then using the refine key to select the green works, which seems weird to me. I can't adjust the strength beyond 0% though as that still effects the blue in the shot.
it's the automatic nature of the keyer that is bothering me, it seems to select the colour from the shot before I've done anything. in a previous green screen shot, where it was a more standard setup it automatically selected all the green in the scene. the control with the sliders, refine key, etc. are great, I just wish there was a way to turn off this initial auto-select. -
Chroma keying - Motion 5 vs Adobe: which is better?
Has anyone compared chroma keying with Motion 5 vs Adobe Premiere Pro cs5.5 or even Afer Effects cs5.5? Are the advanced features in M5 just as good as ultra keyer in Premiere Pro or Key light in AFter Effects?
I am looking to do vids with lots of green screen shoots. I am undecided if I should purchase FCPX +Motion 5 or the Adobe Production Premium (including Premiere Pro adn After Effects).Haven't tried it personally yet, but Alex Lindsay, who's company makes the super high-end keyer Conduit, says that Motion 5's keyer is amazing and they are having to rethink their product because of it.
So, it sounds like it's at least worth a $50 experiment to test it out. You can use it with FCPX or Premier. -
IMovie 11 with chroma-key and watermarks
I'm new to iMovie. I did attempt to find the answers to the questions below here and on the web. Frankly iMovie so far seems to be pain....
setup for my testing purposes only:
a) borrowed chroma-key movie from the web
b) borrowed m4p from the web
I wanted to test my ability to use chrome-key and watermarks in making a short clip using 3 products...Screenflow 4, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X.
Questions and/or statements:
1) Green-screen:
Screenflow and Final Cut took about 5-10 minutes with zero knowledge of either...Over an hour with with iMovie and never could make it work.
2) Watermark:
Aganin 5-10 minutes with Screenflow and Final Cut, with iMove it looks like I could have either keying or watermark, but not both.
Screenflow is SUPER simple and cheep (on sale today for $70), I've seem it 50% off...
Final Cut is OUTSTANDING but super costly for what I wanted to do....Really a great product.
Anyway, here I am with a iMovie and so far it looks like it isn't a fit for me...Anyone know if a way to tweek it to make both chroma-key and watermarking work? I guessing it's just me, but the others seemed so simple.

Thanks for any helpfull hints...iMovie is designed with a very forgiving green screen feature so you can hang a green bedsheet on a wall and get a decent effect. It is designed for people making home movies. Perhaps for this reason, if you have a perfect green key in iMovie, then iMovie might think you used the green on purpose. It expects some variation. When people are doing computer generated graphics, or creating a green background with Photoshop or Keynote or Powerpoint, I suggest using a gradient between close shades of green, rather than a monochromatic green.
If you need sophisticated control of your keying, get FCPX. I am not familiar with Screenflow.
Also, iMovie does all rendering in one pass. This means it cannot do effects that require a render on top of a render. Say you want a greenscreen effect with a watermark on top. That is two renders. This is easy in Final Cut Pro, but not possible in iMovie without jumping through some hoops.
Also for this reason, longer movies should be done in FCPX. What for iMovie would be an immense job requiring huge resources, FCPX can do by chopping it up into bitesize pieces. -
My foreground is on V2 - it is a graphic on a green background I created in Photoshop.
My background is on V1 - footage.
I wish to key V2 over V3 and have used Chroma Key filter. Everything looks fine until I hit Render.
At that point everything inverts and it is like I am keying the green screen over the footage instead of the graphic.
Weird, as I can play the timeline and everything is fine - graphic keys over background no problem It is only when I hit Render I have a problemI asked because there is no V1 and V2 nor Chroma Keyer nor even filters for that matter in FCPX.
I don't understand what V3 is doing on top of the Photoshop file? If you have photoshop it would be much better to knock out the transparency there and bring in the file with transparency and overlay it in the timeline. -
Does Motion 5 Chroma Key compare with Premiere Pro or After Effects?
Does the Chroma Key in Motion 5 work as good as Premiere Pro or After Effects cs5.5? I am looking to do lots of green screen work.
Thanks! Reason I am asking is that I am undecided on going with FCPX or PP/AE. I will be doing lots of green screen (presentation style mostly). I checked out Phyx, it looks really good. I just don't know if I want to spend that extra money.

Color correction and "sudo-chroma keying"-can they be done?
So I just wrapped my cousin's wedding, but the ceremony and reception were both held in a bar, which made for less than optimal conditions. Besides the prolific dim lighting, there were neon signs, specifically Miller and Bud Light. Those signs were both blue, so if I put on my outdoor color corrector, the video looked nice, but then if I panned, the regular ambient lighting looked off. If I applied my indoor color corrector for the ambient lighting, it looked good, but as I got close to the neons, it again looked bad. My question is, can I keyframe the 3-Way Color Corrector so that when I'm by the neons, it's as good or the same coloring as when I'm looking everywhere else?
My second issue came during the vows. Being a bar, there was a Budweiser sign on the wall, and it was paper and had just gone up, so it couldn't come down. I knew I was gonna be framing that perfectly, and unfortunately I was. However, the sign has a nice white boarder to it, so my initial and current thought is to chroma key it out and replace it with something like "Congratulations." I wasn't using a tripod, so the image moves slightly and there's 2 people in front of it, the bride and the groom respectively. Would it be easy to chroma out the white boarder which then would give me some space to matte the rest out. But what about around the people? How good of a matte could I do there? I'm thinking of something like the Magic Wand tool from Photoshop, but FCP doesn't have that. The sequence is only ~5 minutes, so not that long, but what would make it easier on me?
I don't have FCS2 yet, but if all goes according to plan, I'll be wiping my system on monday, installing Leopard, and going to FCS2 which means I could smoothecam that clip, so then my matting would be easier. In theory, I also will have Color at my disposal, but from the time I played with it at an Apple Store, it's too much for me, at least at this stage of the game. This wedding was done on the cheap, hence why I'm doing the video for them, so if I need to leave the color as-is, and the Budweiser sign in, so be it, but I'd really like to make this the best that I can, and neither of these experiments have I had much of any really experience with, so the more the merrier.

good news, yes you can keyframe all the color corrector filters and it should work handily for your situation

your Brother got married in a bar under a Budweiser sign Brian, I'm guessing he won't mind having his wedding video reflect the reality of the surroundings, so why fake it? ... easiest on you would be to leave it as it is 'cos theres nothing worse than a dodgy effect.

Is it possible to chroma key a moving laptop/phone screen in Motion 5?
Hi, I recently downloaded Motion 5, and I've been experimenting with it. What I'd like to know is if it's possible to chroma key the screen of a phone (the screen will be green.) I've managed to chroma key out the green, and it works perfectly, except I don't know how to make the "screen" follow the phone or stay on the phone if the camera moves. Also, is it possible to make the "screen" dynamically grow/shrink as the camera zooms in/out. Is such a thing even possible with Motion?

ChromaKey, GreenScreen Key, and BlueScreen Key are not included in Premiere Elements Mac.
Some suggest Videomerge as the alternative. I do not. But Videomerge is not THE alternative.
Instead, I prefer the Difference Matte as a substitute for the 3 absent keying effects. Please check out my blog post on that which includes

Chroma Key/Luma Key Visualizer Help!
Hey everyone,
I'm new to this video production ind of thing, and I was trying to use chroma key and luma key like people in tutorials on youtube do all the time, and all they do is drag and drop the effect onto their video in the timeline, and a new tab with a visualizer pops up. But, when I do this absolutely nothing happens, it just stays the same. If anybody could help, that would be great!

Make sure the clip you want to affect is loaded into the Viewer (double-click it). You should see the effect you applied in the Filters tab - some filters, like the Chroma Key, also have a visual component you can open. -
Intermittent problem with cross dissolve and chroma key
It seems that in 1 out of 10 videos I produce in Final Cut Pro there is a problem with the cross dissolve effect and chroma key. What happens is that during the cross dissolve, clip A fades out with a green tint and clip B fades in with a green tint.
Today I am working with two videos that I captured using the same work flow on the same day. One project exhibits the tint while the second project does not. If I import the problematic footage into the good project the tint problem follows the footage. In the good footage, the cross dissolve produces a result that does not have a green tint. If I re-capture the "bad" footage the results are the same.
Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem?

Dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)In my project, both clips are source clips with Chroma, Color Smoothing and Matte Choker applied. A dissolve from non-chroma clip to chroma clip works fine. Only problem is with two chroma clips. In my dissolve, the error appears as red fringing in the area between the two masks.< </div>
You're using creative shorthand that doesn't help. "Chroma clip" means the clip to which you have applied all of these effects? What masks? Where are you getting the masks?
To understand what's going on with all them itty bitty pixels in a stack of interactive effects, do me a favor: render out a short piece, say 10 seconds of each of your chromaclips as separate movies over transparency using the Animation codec. Reimport them and put them over a solid colored Dissolve between them using different types of dissolves. Post back and tell us (me) what's going on.
I still consider this to be a bug -- nesting adds more steps to the workflow than if this bug did not exist. < </div>
It's not a bug. Your pixels are running down a pathway. It's a question of building the correct pathway and having the correct pixel wranglers with the right kinds of cattle prods.

PP CS5/5.5 chroma key better than AE CS4?

I think I read somewhere a while back that the chroma key in PP CS5/5.5 is better than AE CS4's Keylight. In fact, the PP effect may be an improved Keylight , but I can't recall this for certain.
Can anyone verify this?

PaulI've keyed with the same camera for a couple of years now, and it's got a pretty narrow band in which greens are easily keyed. DVCPRO HD is not well-reputed for its handling of greens, or at least as a result of it's use with an older 1/3" sensor. I've gotten the best results with the exposure on the screen at about 50-60IRE, but that's just in my scenarios. Most of my material is recorded to P2 cards (though I did one long shoot with OnLo and a green screen), but the footage encoding is the same--it's all DVCPRO HD. I've got some stuff that I did recently that keyed like buttah with Ultra--I literally had a solid key in 20 seconds with just picking the background color and tweaking a couple parameters.
So, since "brightly lit" and "lower lit" are subjective terms, it's hard to give you any specific recommendations other than to try to stick in a particular exposure range. All I know is that when your green screen footage is evenly lit and at mid-range exposure, Ultra does a pretty good job with minimal effort.
