FCPX and speed problems with new external hard drive

Hi All,
I have just bought a new Thunderbolt drive.   I created a very large disk image partition to separate my fcpx files from other iTunes type files - but strangely FCPX is now operating slower than it ever did when I was using 800 firewire.
Any thoughts on why this might be the case?  I have encryption on the disk image (but it is the minimum amount).
Also - FCPX hangs regularly (when I go to Finder it states that the app is not responding) but then after 1 min, is back.   The whole environment is now less stable than when i was simply using  a 800 firewire drive with a disk image.
All OS and FCPX is up to date.
Any suggestions/comments appreciated.
Best,
R

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the tip.  I ran the app (quite a nifty app at that) and my speed tests for the main drive are Read 133 mbps and Write 137 mbps.  Which is not as high as I would expect for a Thunderbolt drive - does this sound right?
Anyhow, I ran the same test on the Disk Image. And something is definitely wrong.  Read 1.4 mbps and Write 1.5 mbps
Now I am scratching my head about this hard drive.   It is a single partition - nothing fancy.  Only this large Disk Image that is for media.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Best,
R

  • Can I dual boot windows 7 and mountain lion with an external hard drive.

I have Mac OSX mountain lion installed and running on my 2TB external hard drive. Boot camp says that I have to use the default flash storage that came with my computer.. Is there a way to put it on my external hard drive if I partition it? I also am having a problem when I tried to use the default storage the setup would not let me format it to NTFS

By default, Boot Camp formats the drive with FAT32. That's because Windows XP could be installed with FAT32 so, in order to write on that partition on Mac OS X, Boot Camp used it instead of NTFS.
If you want to install Windows 7 (it's the only version that your Mac supports), you will have to format the Boot Camp partition in NTFS manually. To do it, just start the Windows installation as usual but, on partitioning screen, choose "BOOTCAMP" volume, press "Drive options" and then, Format, so the partition will be formatted in NTFS and you will be able to install Windows

  • How to Properly Utilize Elements 5 with New External Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I just bought a new external hard drive, and want to use it the most effective way. Should I leave Elements on my internal drive, then open the folder/photo I want to edit from my external drive? Or, I guess the only other option is to copy Elements onto the External drive. Lastly, another option might be to have a copy of Elements on both drives, but I suspect that this would not be a very feasible way, for sure.
    Thanks for any help,
    Les

    My suggestions are:
1- keep Photoshop elements installed on the internal hard drive as it is now
If you have photo files cataloged in the Elements Organizer
2- determine which drive letter you want to assign to this external drive. Use Windows Administrative Tasks to set that drive letter so it remains the same. (some people use a letter further in to the alphabet to make it easier to avoid conflicts)
3- look at this FAQ which will point you to an Adobe techdoc on moving the photo files to a different hard drive using the PSE 5 Organizer -
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc254a8
4- I would keep the Elements Catalog and related files in their default location - which is probably their current location. If you wish that can be changed later.

  • Problem with firewire external hard drives.

Hey, I'm new (not to Apple just to these forums) and I find this section very helpful.
Anyways, I have a very... odd situation. I just got my new Macbook Pro today, and I've had a 12" Powerbook G4 since it first came out. Alright, with that out of the way, here is the problem. I have 2 external hard drives, both being a Western Digital. Now, I hook up this Macbook up to HD "A" and it works. I hook up the Powerbook up to the same HD and it fails to recognize it.
Here is where it gets weird. I hook this Macbook up to HD "B" and it fails to recognize it. I hook up the Powerbook to it, and it recognizes it. Any idea as to why this might be? I was thinking maybe because my Macbook is on a 35% charge right now. Then again, my Powerbook's battery doesn't last 5 minutes and the charger for it is away from both HD's and it still works for "B".
If you can help, thanks much. I have searched, but to no avail have I found the same problem that is occurring with me at this time.

Check in system profiler under FireWire when both, one after the other, FW-HDD are connected - just to verify it is a technical problem - if no info (effect) -> hardware, if you see any information like this:

  • Major Problem with Multiple External Hard Drives! Watch Out!

I've almost completely given up on Aperture and gone back to Iphoto due to a major glitch in Aperture that actually cost me loss of some wedding photos (approximately 20)! Watch out for this, it is damaging.
I have 3 external hard drives, and of course when you mount disk images and cards you gain them in finder on the left hand panel. It seems the order of the mount is crucial to Aperture locating things and consequently if the mount order changes Aperture can no longer locate the files, and worse if you import to hard drive it doesn't import to anywhere!
The situation I have is that the other day I was importing wedding images and was up to the last card (fortunately we had 2 photographers so the loss isn't as detremental) and the power went off. Happens a lot where we are.
So upon power comeing back on the external hard drives remounting, I have figured out they mounted in a different order to what they were previously.
So upon going back to Aperture I went back to importing to the same external hard drive location. It had no warning of a problem and seemed to import without a problem. However once it had finished, on clicking on the thumbnails the images wouldn't load. I imported again and the same problem happened, however I didn't realise and had deleted the files. When I realised I tried to locate the files using spotlight. They are no where to be found!
Also because of the re-order of my hard drives aperture can't locate previously imported (referenced) files. I can find these ones on the hard drive, so I haven't lost them, but it will take unmounting and mounting several times in different orders to try and get them back because I do not remember which way they were mounted!
This is terrible! Aperture is a mess. This sort of thing shouldn't happen. Besides it's still too slow and it has slowed my production time substantially. The only thing it has over Iphoto is it doesn't degrade the JPEG each adjustment. However in Iphoto this is negligable, it can't be noticed, and I am not going to sacrifice time, lost photos for a minute level of extra quality.
Aperture get your act together. I wasted my money back when I purchased the full price 1.0 version.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Hardly high and not mighty.
    But, to your points.
It sounds like you do have a UPS, not a surge protector, though it probably provides this in addition.
The fact that your external drives dropped during import is the same as removing a drive without unmountingf it, yes? Who knows what state the inode/allocation tables look like and no surprise that any clusters part updated were dropped. They'll rebuild from the cast complete mirror, but in-flight changes would not necessarily have been written to both sets of tables.
I cannot understand why (for you) Aperture appears to need the drives mounting in the same order. Disk Utility may show something, but I suspect you tried this.
However, and this I do challenge, the fact that you blamed Aperture and stated categorically it behaves a certain way when it does so only under some odd or errored hardware condition is not the thoughful optinion of an experienced Mac user. I wish you no offence but despite what you observed and your experience, I do wish to correct your sweeping statement.
The other comment I would challenge is that "I'm writing for people to watch out for and to trial ..." I would agree with that statement if that was any part of the context of the original post. No, your original post was far more negative and accusatory.
Your other new comments are clearly based on issues causing you angst. I have felt most of them, but at the end, it is software. Perfect? No, but I haven't had a crash since 1.5.1. Far from perfect? Yes, and many features missing that may be added in v2, v3, v.... . Best for my purposes despite its faults? Yes, by far. It is the fastest and most productive way for me to get to end-of-job.
Now my question for you since: what in your view is a superior alternative? Many on this forum are professional/serious amateur photographers who want some software company to succeed. Perhaps the reason we contribute to the Aperture forum is because we've found it the best horse to ride and therefore want to see it improve.

  • Problems with iomega External Hard Drive on MacBook Air

    Hi community!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Air and an external hard drive and I'm wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.
I own a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I connect my iomega 500GB external hard drive, the Finder is able to pick it up, but when I click on the drive name, it spins forever without the Finder responding for a long time (it basically crashes the Finder with a spinning ball staying forever). The light on the external hard drive flashes intermittently when I first plug it in, but after that stays constantly lit. So I guess the disk has power, but something else is wrong with it.
It was working fine earlier today but I accidentally pulled the cable out while the disk was working. I'm hoping this hasn't permanently damaged my drive.
Any help on what I could do to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    SV

You might try launching Disk Utility, and then select the drive in question to run a "Verify disk" on the drive. This may indicate any errors in the file system of the drive that might be preventing the successful reading of the disk.
If the disk is empty, you may want to re-partition and reformat, so as to start with a "clean slate".

  • Logic pro 9 keeps crashing. I get a "disc not ejected properly" message among other error messages. I can't even force quit. It makes me do the hard shutdown. Any ideas? Same problem with both external hard drives

Getting lots of crazy error messages pertaining to the external hard drives. This problem is bad. Usually can't run the software very long at all before it crashes. Logic version 9.1.8 running on OS 10.7.5 on a Macbook Pro

Such an error is being reported by OS X (nothing to do with Logic) and indicates that your Mac and your external drives are losing connection for some reason... There are some external drives that will incorrectly 'go to sleep' without reporting it to OS X which then thinks the drives have been unplugged without ejecting, hence the msg.
Also, you could have a flaky physical connection somewhere.. so check ports and cables....
So... to troubleshoot.. try the following...
Save and place a small text file on each of the drives.. Open both text files in textedit..  and keep them open (You can minimize textedit ) Now, see if you still get that problem.. when the files are kept open.
If you do not get this problem.. then the likelohood is it will be the HDs 'going to sleep' without proper reporting to OS X.. so check for a firmware update from the HD's manufacturer.. that will stop this from happening.
If they still disconnect, its more likely it is a physical ports and cable issue.

  • Problems with LaCie external hard drive.

I bought a LaCie external hard drive about a month before leopard was released. I bought this with the intention of using it with time machine. This hard drive has USB and ethernet connections. When I updated to leopard I found out that the USB connection does not work with leopard, I contacted LaCie and they told me that I can only use ethernet with leopard. but time machine won't let me use it through ethernet.
Please respond with any way that I can use time machine with this hard drive.
If it helps it is the LaCie ethernet disk mini 500 GB model.

I have 5 Lacie's and they work with USB. 70% of the people out there will get the cheapest drives they can, and that will be a USB drive.
Here is how to format your drive.
    Macintoch HD->Applications->Utilities->Disk Utilities.
Have your Lacie plugged in and running then on the left side highlight it. You may have 2 listings for THAT drive here. The top entry will give you the for example "468 GB WD3435988345903" that is the one you want to highlight. The second or third or fourth on would be the name of the drive partitions you would name. or sub hard drives inside your main Lacie hard drive.
Here is my suggestion, You still need another form of backup if TM goes bad on you. I clone my HD on another partition on the same drive as my TM. I have 70 GB partition for the clone or backup. So I will give you this scenario.
Highlight your drive then click on "partition" in the headers to your right.
In Volume scheme hit 2 partitions
Then go down and click "options"
    Hit "GUID Partition"
Your partitions will be named untitled 1 and 2
Highlight the "untitled 2" by clicking in it's square
There will be a small center dot between the two partitions, put your cursor on that dot while clicking and pull down the box to 50- 60 GB or what ever you feel your max HD space will be with all your pictures and movies I chose 70GB
Them you untitled 1 will be your TM partition
Go a head and name your partitions in the line to your right by clicking on the partition squares.
I put in Time Machine for #1 and Tom's Clone 12-29-07 and I change the date every time I clone or backup on this partition by clicking on the lower most part of the name of this partitions name on your desktop. You will get a blue highlight when you can add to it. The name/date change can be done on your desktop anytime.
Before you hit the final button to do this partition scheme, double check options on more tie that you have the GUID scheme checked.
Run this free program to use to clone your main drive in your new #2 partition as an added backup to TM.

  • Problems with an external hard drive

    Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of help here. I have recently converted to a 13" MBP from a PC. I transferred ALL my photos, files and music from my PC to an external hard drive with the thought of keeping it there and obviously using my Mac to open the files as and when i wanted.
BUT, i wanted to use the external hard drive with my Mac and back it up with the time machine. So i transferred all the files and photos back to a PC so I could wipe the external hard drive and format for the Mac. Which I did.
So nowwwwwww. The hard drive wont appear when plugged in to a PC. ***. What can I do now? I'm guessing the only thing is to do a wireless migration?
I just want the hard drive formatted so i can use with Mac and store and edit video mainly. And i want all my photos and stuff on the hard drive.
    Any help?

NTFS is the normal drive format for PCs.  Macs can read but not write to NTFS unless you have third party NTFS software.  PCs cannot use Mac formatted drives without speical software.  Both can use FAT format, but it has certain drawbacks.

  • Trouble capturing with new external hard drive

OK, I finally bought the correct-- at least I think it's the correct--- external hard drive (160 GB lacie). However, when I use "capture now" I get an "allocating disk space" message. This message usually stays up for a very long time with the spinning pin wheel, which results in only a small fraction of my video being captured.... if any at all.
I'm assuming this has something to do with the addition of the external hard drive... any suggestions?

    Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Disc utility.
Click the Information Tab if it's not already open.
Click on the Disc you wish to check (Lacie). this will tell you the FORMAT, is it HFS+? That's the same as Mac OS Extended, the one you want.
If it's not click the Erase Tab and re-set it.
This link will give you all the details:

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • Problems with an external hard drive (not Time Machine related)

First, I'll clarify that I'm using an internal hard drive inside an external enclosure, incase that makes a difference to my problem.
I got this drive to store my music on, since I've run out of room on my main hard drive. I've transfered all my music to it, and it's been working fine, but now it seems that any program that tries to access files on the drive will freeze. Whether it's trying to play a song in iTunes or copying files from one drive to another. And when iTunes freezes from this, a simple Force Quit wont work. The window closes, and I can no longer access the program, but it still appears open on the dock and prevents me from being able to shut down the computer properly.
I've tried running Disk Warrior on the drive, but that didn't seem to do the trick. Does anybody have any ideas?
    Thank you

    Nope, that didn't help, unfortunately.
Also, I'll add that now the drive doesn't show up on the desktop all the time (sometimes I'll have to unplug/replug it, turn off/on the drive, or restart the whole computer to get it to show up).

  • Can you help me with my External Hard Drive?

    Hey everyone,
I'm having a big problem with my external hard drives. Firstly, I'll give you all the information I think you might need-
    * I'm running on Mac OSX 10.4.11.
    * I have the most recent release 13" Macbook and it has plenty of memory left.
    * Both my EHD's are made by LACIE. One is 250GB (18 months old) and the other 500GB (2 weeks old).
    * Both work perfectly on every other computer I've tried - (2 Macs and 2 Windows).
    * Both are formatted as FAT32 because I need to use them on Mac at home and Windows at work.
Now, the problem is every time I mount one of the EHDs on my laptop, they show up on the desktop but when double clicked (or Apple + O 'ed) they cause Finder to have a spaz, with the top white bar disappearing along with everything on my desktop (for about 2s).
What I have *tried so far*-
    * Mounting and unmounting the EHDs.
    * Turning on and off both EHDs.
    * Plugging them in one at a time.
    * Restarting the Macbook and plugging them in after it has fully loaded.
    * Restarting the Macbook and plugging them in as it loads.
    * Creating a new user account to open them in.
    * Verifying both EHDs using Disk Utility - both claim to be working properly.
    * That trick where you take out the battery and power source, hold down the On button for 5s, then hold Apple + P + R + Option while the Macbook turns back on.
None of these have worked so far. Please help!
Thank you so much in advance,
    Joe

Have you tried opening them in a Finder window? Also, you might boot to your Install DVD and launch Disc Utility to verify and repair both permissions and your drive.
Sounds strange. I also have the Lacie 500G - partitioned, but with one being FAT 32 ...works fine for me.

  • Help with unreadable external hard drive

I am having problems with an external hard drive and found your Email in yahoo answers.
I have a 'MB' external hard drive with a Mac OS X 4 11. A few days ago I turned off the Mac at the back button, after the screen went dark, I unplugged the HD only to find the Mac came on again. The Mac must have been in sleep mode? Since this time the Mac will not recognise the HD.
I tried another USB, making sure the preferences under finder is checked for all items and tried data recovery, PRAM reset, Disc Utility, which did see the drive (in gray) and it gave me this message; Error; underlying task reported failure on exit / 1 non HFS volume checked / 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error / unable to read FAT (input/output error).
I am hoping I can still use this external HD or could there be bad news ahead? I have not yet tried this on another Mac. Please can anyone help or advise? Thank you.

    that was my backup!
If you truly mean a backup then that means you still have the original files on your internal drive, or wherever. You just make another backup. If you mean it was an archive/overflow drive then that's not a backup (and you should start thinking about buying another HD to save both the files on your internal and external since either of those could fail without warning).
So are you suggesting I go to a place/individual that does PC data retrieval? And does this mean I buy another external HD?
I don't know much about file recovery on PCs. If this was a Mac drive then there would be a good chance you could either use Disk Utility on your Mac already to repair it, or perhaps a utility such as Diskwarrior ($100) to do the same. That repair could be done pretty much in-place. It's only when a drive is really seriously damaged, in particularly physically, that you need a second HD. Again, this is if you could do this on a Mac.
There are supposedly Mac based recovery tools that can also recover FAT, but those would likely need a second drive and the results might not be pretty (files, everywhere, maybe without original file names).
I'd find a buddy with a PC and see if they have something on there that can do it for a cup of coffee.

  • New external hard drive doesn't back up

    Hi All,
So I had an email from Apple stating my hard drive might be faulty and they will replace it free of charge. So, I went out and purchased a brand new external hard drive to use as my time machine back up.
I formatted my hard drive to use only as a time machine backup. Half way thorugh my first backup, something interuppted it and it didn't finish the backup.
So, I've tried many times since to back up my machine and everytime i get this message............

    Hello:
It is not helpful to you, but I have never seen anything like that before.
Did you install any Seagate software when you got your new drive?
Did you buy the "Seagate plus for Mac OS?"
Since I do not have a Seagate drive, I think it would be best if you went to the Seagate web site (http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/) and have them shoot the problem.  If that does not help, come back and I will try to guess my way through the problem.
