FCPx Crash and Burn (iMovie too)
Wow, what does Apple actually do?? I bought my first Apple computer last year (MBP 2.3 / 8gb RAM) and have been completely dissatisfied with the video editing capability in both Final Cut Pro and iMovie.
FCPx is giving me all types of issues. Computer runs sluggish, conversion to pro res is too much for computer, exports of audio create popping noises and most exports in general wont complete when containing significant transitions, slow motion, titles, etc...When you import the video you can go with "proxy" and NOT do transcoding, but then you are just setting yourself up for failure with export to QT. That being said, if you do complete the transcoding during import it will process to APP pro res in the background, but if you have any significant amount of video you might as well come back a week later and hope that it hasnt crashed your MAC yet.
I did one quick export just as a test which worked, but once you added audio (AND an Itunes FILE MIND YOU!) you get a horrible popping sound. (P.S. I shouldnt have to download some other program to convert an iTunes file to lesser quality so it does work, instead, Apple should fix the problem).
And dont even get me started on iMovie - what a waste of a program. It has all the capabilitites to be wonderful without any capability to actually be wonderful.
Best part about all this is support help from Apple is ZERO....PERIOD. No one in the stores knows jack. Genius bar is a joke. Nobody from Apple care can suggest anything but a new install and/or buy a new machine. As for the forums, its just a compelte head-spin. The thoughts are great, but everyone has a different one.
Bottom line Apple - you need to clearly test your own products and specificly state what is required to run them. Your suggestions now and what your stores preach is far from accurate. A MBP cannot run most, if any of these video editing programs when you want to do anything more then dump and export. Someone should have told me to buy the $4k machine if I wanted to edit video.
DONT PROVIDE IT IF IT WONT WORK AND MORE IMPORTANTLY....IF YOU WONT COMMENT WITH ANY SUPPORT! Start fixing problems instead of creating new products with little to no value increase. (i.e. MBP w/retna display, iphone 4, 4s and 5, Lion OS, iMovie, FCPx, etc...)
From what you say it must be a complete waste of money . . .
How on earth others manage to produce the most amazing feature-films and shorts with it is a total mystery to me.
Oh . . . Unless . .
Hey, you don't think they actually take the time to LEARN how to use the Application before they slag it off, do you?
The best tutorial is here:
http://www.rippletraining.com/categories/apple-pro-apps-tutorials/final-cut-pro- x-tutorials/apvs-fcpx.html
The best FREE tutorial is here:

I think you'd get far more help in the Apple Forums if you clearly stated what problem you are encountering, what material you're working with and how the problem presented itself, rather than ranting. I glanced through your post and found nothing there to actually help you with, but FCP X works near perfectly for me - and I'm no magician.
It could work near-perfectly for you too, if you'd calm down.

???;???; Rollbacks crashing and burning
Well, having an application deployed on 70 machines (W95/W98/NT4.0/W2K) is very educational.
I'm having a problem when pressing the ROLLBACK (red arrow) in NavigationBar. In the examples below, the exact same JAR was being used.
Win98/OJVM/JRE 1.3 (sticking with supported, official configuration )
I get nullPointerExceptions, funky results, and sometimes the JVM "crashes" ( I think )... the whole application just flashes and disappears.
Win98/Javasoft 1.3/JRE 1.3
Crashes and burns too frequently to be usable.
NT 4.0/Hotspot 1.3.1/JRE 1.3.1
I do EXACTLY the same operations on EXACTLY the same data... and the program behaves, I get no nullPointerExceptions, no crashes, no tracebacks! Extremely stable, acts just as one would want it to.
Yeah. grin I know... why not just deploy NT 4.0 and the 1.3.1 stuff to everyone? Uh... not officially supported, the 1.3.1 is Beta release... There's also just a JDK, no JRE that I can locate for 1.3.1.
Anyone else run into these sorts of issues and have workaround(s)?
nullGot it using the debugger... interestingly, I also find that when I swap to my DEVELOPMENT database using exactly the same configuration, I don't get the ClassCastException... but when I point it to PRODUCTION, it gets:

I think I've posted this before, but didn't get a response. THe line pointed to is:
protected boolean isBoundToLOV(Control c)
DataItem di = (DataItem)c.getDataItem();
if ((di != null) && (di instanceof ImmediateAccess))
------THIS LINE IS POINTED TO ----->
AttributeInfo attrInfo = (AttributeInfo )di.getProperty(
DataItemProperties.INFO_OBJECT);
if (attrInfo != null)
return (( attrInfo.getLOV() != null ) ? true : false);
return false;
and the control pointed to is the combobox that was being modified and rolled back.
This is repeatable behavior when I run it against the PRODUCTION instance.
It's interesting because the PRODUCTION database was exported off the DEVELOPMENT database. I believe that the metadata is identical. I'll certainly recheck it... but the tables look identical when I DESCribe 'em. The stuff may be created in a slightly different order ( all resultsets are unordered unless explicitly sorted, so if BC4J/Wizards are expecting metadata by default in a certain order for some p eculiar reason, or the order as created, things could get interesting ) I can't imagine or see anything like that could be.

That's right... this flagship of prime and lovable software goes crashing and burning every time I try to use my favorite plugin. It works just fine in CS5! I've tried contacting the developers and everyone to know avail. Can someone at the lovable Adobe help me with this issue!?

2 of my computers have crashed and burned in the last week. One of them was my main computer for itunes. i have 2 issues:
1) i need to deauthorize the other 2 computers in order to authorize my new one.
2)how do i move all of my music etc to the new computer?
thank youThanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone). Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer. How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up? -
FCPX crashed and I reported it here. Tom Wolsky suggested I trash prefs, perform an fsck, reboot and redownload FCPX from the App store. The reboot was okay but Safari will not let me access the App Store to redownload FCP. I'm running 10.6.8 but the App Store icon is grayed out. I get a "Safari doesn't recognize addresses starting with macappstore."
How do I get to the App Store to get FCPX back? I'm using the Trial version now.How are you linking to the App Store from Safari? From this page?

Why did you start a new itunes account? This will just cause problems.
Your library will only be where you put it.
It has alwasys been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good at all, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store -

"Off1ce15" - kind of a giveaway that this must be related, no??
This is "Office Home and Business 2013 32-bit" on windows 8.1u1 (32 bit)
Anybody at MS-support even remotely interested in troubleshooting this??There is a 'volume licence' Outlook2010 installed on this machine, it's been switched back and forth to this a few times, as Outlook 2013 has had numerous issues. The licence key was supplied by our Exchange server provider.
I suspect that Windows simply doesn't clean up after itself! This (recent clean installation) W8.1u1 machine has gone through these versions:
Office365 outlook2013 (trial) - which eventually crashed and burned, so I removed it.
Outlook2013 'volume licence' from my Exchange Server provider - also crashed and burned, so I removed it.
Outlook2010 'volume licence' from my Exchange Server provider.
Office2013 Home and Business ( including Outlook 2013) - but the Outlook2013 crashed and burned, so I removed it, and re-installed the Outlook 2010, which was working fine. Exchange provider has supplied me a volume licence key for Outlook 2010, but
I cannot for the life of me find a place to enter it!!
Have tried clean boot of windows, it doesn't solve the issue of Outlook Crashing. All other Office2013 modules work fine, no problems whatsoever with Excel, Word, PPT, etc.
Outlook safe mode doesn't work, either.. see these log excerpts:

The "infallible" backup system crashes and burns; how to transfer the data?
After five years of exemplary, error-free service, my old Powerbook G4 1Ghz finally crashed during a backup to an external hard drive. I just bought a new Macbook Pro (arrived September 16th) and want to transfer the data from the old Pro to the new Pro. Herein lies the complex problem, and Migration Assistant and a firewire cable won't solve it.
When the old Pro died, I was maintaining what I believed to be an infallible backup system (ha). I did nightly backups to two different external hard drives; one was a USB LACIE drive, the other a firewire LACIE drive. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to do a merge contents backup on the USB drive and a file-level bootable clone to the firewire drive. Surely nothing could go wrong. Oh, one only needs to think of the Titanic and say, “Something did.”
The old Pro could only backup to the USB drive when using an express card that added USB 2.0 connections (the old Pros have USB 1.1 and they’re too slow). But whenever the express card was plugged into my old Pro and it fell asleep without my first powering the card off, the computer crashed. This was no problem; I just powered off the card before putting it to sleep and ignored the fact that the computer on rare occasion acted buggy with the USB express card plugged in. Well, on the fateful night in question, the computer did its backup to the USB drive and then fell asleep while it was still plugged in (this is what its energy saver told it to do, unfortunately). When I tried to turn the computer back on, a black box appeared in the upper left hand corner with a bunch of random-seeming white text and the concluding message, “Waiting for remote debugger.” The computer was frozen and a cold reboot was the only option.
My old Pro would never be the same again.
I tried to boot it up. Sometimes it did so, but then would suddenly show a red screen and crash. It kept crashing, sometimes just powering off immediately. So I brought out good old Disk Warrior, booted up with that, repaired permissions, repaired disk, and rebuilt the directory. I also booted up with the Tiger OS X install CD and fixed permissions that way just for good measure. The computer then started up fine. I thought I was back to normal! Celebration time! Not. The USB drive that I had backed up to would not mount anymore. So I, seeing that the computer appeared to be back to normal, just plugged in second external hard drive--the firewire--and began the bootable clone. It delved into making the clone without a hitch and I went off to work happy and content that I would have an up-to-date backup soon.
Lo and behold, when I came back from work, the backup to the firewire drive hung midway through. It had done nothing but wiped the entire drive and copied about 500 mb of data to it before freezing. I tried again several times and, believe it or not, only got vastly improved results when the offending express card was actually plugged into the computer. By this mysterious and probably risky method, I was able to get some data off. But only about 1/10 of the whole. The old Pro always would crash before more than 5 gigs of data or so can be transferred.
Starting from around that time, the offending old Pro began to exhibit hideous popping, gurgling, grating, clicking, swiping, and other sounds from the left hand side of the computer—where I imagine the hard drive is. These sounds can be quite loud and sometimes even sound like tempered UFO tones beamed down to the computer. Sometimes they aren’t present at all and the computer acts fine, until a certain file or folder is accessed, and then they start again and the computer hangs, going from fine to disastrous in an instant.
I took out the offending express card and launched it away and took the USB drive and put it on another computer. It still would not mount. I finally got it to unlock (it’s a fingerprint-access safe drive) and ran Disk Warrior on it and was able to get as much data off it as I could. But it appears that a huge chunk of data was simply missing from the drive, whether from Disk Warrior having to delete data when it rebuilt the directory or from damage when the computer died while backing up to this drive, I don’t know.
So now I went from a supposedly infallible backup system of two rotating external hard drives to potentially losing 5 years of utterly critical work!
I tried starting up the old Pro in target disk mode with my new Pro. At first, this appeared to have very promising results because there was no grating or popping sounds from my old Pro when I did this. I began a data transfer with glee. But no luck; the old Pro always eventually hangs and the new Pro doesn’t even recognize it (the icon for the old Pro disappears as if I unmounted it).
Sometimes the Old Pro can still boot up and seem to act fine; it can sit like that indefinitely, I'd guess; but if the disk is actually read and written to enough, it always fails. I am using it as little as possible now (i.e. not at all) so as not to exacerbate the problem any more than it already has been.
Two quick notes that might further explain the situation: two weeks before the crash happened, I used iDefrag to defragment the drive. The night before the crash happened, I did a lot of work on my computer while on a bumpy trip on the Long Island Railroad. The computer acted fine throughout all this, but perhaps the bumpiness or the defragmentation contributed to this problem.
I must get the data off. This dead/dying hard drive doesn’t just contain mere photos and music libraries and nifty applications. I’m talking completed and incomplete novel manuscripts, lecture notes, lesson plans, published and to-be-published articles, a massive thesis, and much more totaling literally thousands upon thousands of pages and representing more than 5 years of graduate and professional research and work. For me, the stakes are critically high. Thank you for reading this Hero's Journey of a post.Good news!
Imagine a Venn diagram with four interlapping circles. The circles are:
1. Catastrophically exploded hard drive
2. Catastrophically annihilated external hard drive used for incremental backups
3. Catastrophically wiped cleaned external hard drive used for bootable clones
4. Email, CD, and iPod backups
With a little shake, rattle and roll and other craziness you do with a hard drive with failed bearings, I got #1 working briefly, thank goodness.
With Disk Warrior and figuring out how to surpass a fingerprint-activated security feature, I got #2 working in a limited fashion.
With some workarounds, I got some use out of #3.
#4 just is.
The interlap of these 4 things produced about 95-99% or so of my data, including all critical items. It was a disorganized mess I just spent two days organizing, but I am back up and running without having to use expensive data backup services. I am slightly bothered by that slight bit of missing data, but from what I can tell, it amounts to nothing more than a brief sketch of a lesson plan, a song or two from the iTunes store, and maybe a handful of attachments. Nothing to spend big bucks recovering, in other words.
Now I will substitute my "infallible" backup system with a new one:
1. Time capsule/time machine
2. Complete online backups with Mozy
3. Occasional bootable clones to the external hard drive I have that didn't get damaged.
I think this will be the ticket!
Thank you all. -
FCPX crashed and did not autosave. How do I recover my project?
Please help me, I lost my project when final cut crashed and it did not recover.
Which version of FCPX are you on? Were you able to redeem the 5.32 pm version and get it going in FCPX at least? I guess the intermediate versions are lost, unless, if you happen to have the latest 10th upgrade, you have manually made 'snapshot' versions of your projects at critical moments.
If you have got back at least the 5.32 version, say, cheers! -
Brand new iMac 24" crashes and burns playing games in bootcamp
If this continues I guess I will have to call support but for those that are interested here is the story:
I have a 24" iMac 3gig and I have installed bootcamp - although I am not convinced as to how well this worked with the driver install as I have problems pairing my bluetooth mouse and keyboard in windows - works fine in OS/X.
If I play WoW in OS/X it seems to handle this. I currently bought Warhammer Online which is PC only so I put it into my bootcamp partition. It runs absolutely fine until it gets hot and then it quite happily brings the machine down.
Symptoms.
wireless networking stops
bluetooth becomes unreliable even when rebooted into OS/X
System crashes and screen goes black - no repsonse or anything
I find this worrying as such occurences cannot be doing my system any good.
I installed fan control and tried upping the fans and my ssytem is now a little noisy but it still happens.
After spending so much money on what is touted as a robust and performant system I am very disapointed. It seems despite controlling and selecting hardware Apple are no better than PC manufacturers. Except prettier

For most of my needs I am happy with the Mac, a little disapointed with boot camp but that is all. Not just the game, but also the bluetooth keyboard - just can't get it to work. Works perfectly in OS/X which I guess is the main thing.
Only real niggle in OS/X is the mighty mouse seems to be a bit sporadic with the right click. Works for a time and then doesn't. Very annoying, mainly becuase when it is working properly it is brilliant - so infuriating when it doesn't.
Still - early days yet, and still learning - so hopefully I will sort everything out to my satisfaction. -
Mac MINI server crash and burn???
I have the new 2012 Mac MINI server. I think it needs repairs and I am wondering if anyone has seen this.
My start up volume crashed and the system froze. The computer automatically tried to restart but the Mac will not boot.
I get the "three beeps" indicating bad ram.
I purchased new RAM (2 chips) an 8 gig chip and a 4 gig chip. The system ran for a while and crashed again.
I decided to re-install the system on the other 500 GIG HD (The MINI server comes with two 500 GIG HDs).
Crash, crash, crash. then the MINI will not boot and I get the "three beeps" again.
After a lot of research, I installed one RAM chip in the top slot. I was able to install Lion on the second hard drive.
All the RAM chips are good if you use them in the top RAM slot ONLY. If I use them in the slot closest to the motherboard the computer will not start.
THE WORST THING is that the bad RAM caused my main drive with all my important info on it to fail right in the middle of a "Time Machine" back up.
The time machine back-up folder is corrupt so I lost 12 years worth of data and will not be able to restore.
Now what do I do?Well not exactly DOA. I had it for 3 months before it blew up. That was long enough for me to get rid of all the old back-ups and use an external for the new time machine back up which is corrupt thanks to the messed up RAM. The exteral 2T drive with the time machien folder is damaged. DiskUtilities suggests that I reformat the drive. I used DiskWarrior and mannaged to get it back up, but the only back up available is about a month old and I do not know if it will work or not.
I purchased the extended Apple Support for an additional $150.00 so I will be sending the computer back to Apple. I purchaed it online at the Apple Store.
I have been using a Mac sence 1988. -

I have ITunes sharing. We have already enabled 5 computers but over the years at least 2 of them are long gone no way to "deauthorize" them. This current computer has just been reformatted as it crashed and I am trying to get all of the music back but am told I am at the 5 home sharing limit. Anyone know how to deauthorize the old computers so I can have itunes on the primary computer?

Are any of the two remaining authorisations on a computer you have access to?
If so, I'd try doing a deauthorise all from one of the accessible computers, and then reauthorise the ones you still have access to.
