FCPX does not see my external drive?

Need some help. When I open FCP it identifies my external hard drive for a second or two but then it disappears. I can see it in the finder and on my desktop no problem. Also, when I start a new event it does not see my external videos hard drive. It is a brand new Seagate - I have not used it for time machine back ups and before I upgraded to Lion it worked fine. Now I can't bring in projects that I saved to the external Hard drive. I'm new to this software so I would really appreciate some help as I can't even begin to contemplate doing this project a third time.

Take a look at the name of the drive, as well as to the names of folders at the root of that drive.
FCP is probably treating your drive as a camera. You may know for sure by selecting File->Import from Camera and see if your drive appears there.
Don't call your drive "Video", for instance - and avoid common names used in camera folders, like "DCIM".

  • Aperture import does not see/recognize external drive

I've searched quite a bit for an answer to this and have come up empty, so I apologize in advance if I simply missed it.
I am having issues with Aperture not showing a couple external drives in the Import view.  It recognizes my iphones, ipad, SD cards, but not these three external SATA drives, which are formatted NTFS.  The OS sees them as they appear in Finder and I can browse them just fine.
    Any ideas?

I've been using this application without incident for
several weeks now; coming over or rather
transitioning from WIN7 and Lightroom to
MAC OS and Aperture; Aperture is the best DAM
I've seen but a little light as a raw image file processor
IMHO  (so far..that is..I have a whole two weeks of
working with A3 and nearly 5 years with LR)
Anyway's I'm referencing files on the TC and importing
into the Aperture library..there is simply no sign of the import
browser at the bottom of the import screen.. I wonder if the
10.7.1 LION update broke something as I did do that update a
few nites ago and have not tried any imports for a few days..
just noticed this today as the other poster evidently did..
I'm going to try a simple import from a USB thumb drive to see if that works..

  • HELP - FCPX does not read my external drive.

The drive shows when first launching FCPX, but then the drive disappears from event and project lists when fully launched. I copied an empty Events (with new event) and Projects folders from my hard drive to the root of the media drive - the new event is found when FCPX is launched, but then the drive is dropped. I checked the formating, and it is os x extended journaled.
How can I get this drive recognized by FCPX?
My 2TB Drive shows in finder and is connected via firewire 800. This drive was previously used as my photo archive and "time machine" target drive (I moved these to another external drive). So, I know the drive is functional.

Thank you, Tom. It was as though you were standing behind me and looking over my shoulder!
I did indeed have a recently copied "Private" file from my camera on the root of this drive (and basically nothing else there). I renamed the folder - "x_private" and the drive with FCP folders were readable.
    Awesome Save - Thanks again!

  • LR 5 does not see my external HD

LR 5 no longer recognizes my La Cie HD.My photos are stored on the La Cie. I loaded images directly on to my Mac pro HD when my La Cie was not available. Since that time, LR does not see my external drive.

I expect the external HD to appear in the left hand column in the library
    mode

  • Time Machine does not see my external HD

I would like to setup TM but it does not see my external HD, but I can see it on desktop in and finder. I can browse it. But time machine does not see it and forces me to use airport time capsule but I don't have it. Help please.

What format is the external drive in?
If it's formatted for Windows (either using the MBR partition table or using FAT/NTFS volumes) then Time Machine cannot back up to this disk.
The disk needs to be formatted as Mac OS X Extended using either the APM or GPT partition tables.
Life is complicated somewhat by the fact that the OS, in general, can read MBR/FAT drives, but they're not suitable for Time Machine (limitations in the disk formats prevent some of Time Machine's features from working).
You can check the current partition map/disk format in Disk Utility.app - just select the disk on the left and the information will be displayed below. If the disk is using MBR and/or FAT then you'd need to reformat the drive in order to use it with Time Machine.

  • ITunes are not seeing my external drive as the library

Hi, I'm struggling to get music on my iPhone.
All our music is stored on an external hard drive that we use with our iPods. My wife and I recently got iPhones and we're trying to put some music on them.
iTunes is setup to get the music from the hard drive but for some reason I can not access it any more. My problem is that iTunes are not seeing my external drive as the library.
Here's how I've set my iTunes up:
    Edit - Preferences - Advance
iTunes media folder location: J:\Lacie_iTunes (that's where the music is stored)
Now this worked perfect with our iPods but for some reason iTunes is not seeing the music anymore.
In iTunes, if I click on Library and then Music all I get is a screen to either download music (with tutorials) or import CD's (with tutorials).
I'm using iTunes 9 and Windows 7, the iTunes version on my wife's laptop is an older version but I do not think that that is the problem.
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

Setting the iTunes Media folder in preferences only moves the content to the external drive. The library database files will still be at the default location of ...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. When you move the portable drive from one machine to the other you'll have access to the content, but not the database hence you get an empty library and the prompt to add some content.
See this recent post for pointers on how to rearrange the database & media folders so that everything is truly portable. I don't have time just now to rewrite the instructions for your specific drive & folder names but if it's not clear I'll pop by later and write them out again.

  • Equium A60 does not see a recording drive

Sadly more help is needed with my Equium A60 following on from the earlier fault of the missing CD\DVD drive. Thanks for the help earlier, I did get my cd drive back in 'My Computer' and it does read cds..
Today I tried to put some mp3s on a known working CDRW and my DVD writer is not seen. I get a error message saying you don't have a cd writer.. I have CD Creator 6 which I have been using ok before, that too does not see a recording drive on my laptop.
I can no longer format a blank cdr or drag and drop on a cdrw formatted previously.
    Any ideas anyone.?? Thanx.!!

    Hi,
in 'My Computer' right-click on the DVD drive and select properties. Check if on the record tab CD-recording is activated.
    Bye

  • Bridge does not see both external hard drives

In either CS3 or CS4, Bridge does not recognize my second external hard drive. Photoshop and lightroom see both drives. I am using a laptop and Windows xp.
    Thanks,
    mIKE

Those directories are modified in the User Preferences tab in the Setup Room.
When you've got the file tree dialogue box open, you'll need to point Color to the "Volumes" level, once there, you should see your external drive.

  • I do not see my external drive in the Events Library and cannot choose it to import media to. Can you help please?

I do not see my external hard drive in the Events Library pane. How do I get my media to import to my external hard drive instead of Macintosh HD please?

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply. Please forgive my ignorance. I did try to find the answer here but I am new at this.  Could you direct me to that thread please? Yes the external hard drive is used for time machine and I did see something at one time regarding an issue but evidently it didnt sink in or stick. The drive is a g-raid I have had for several years used on a macbook pro but now I have a new imac and fcpx. works fine with all other apps, when the drive came out of the box it said preformatted and just ran with it.

  • Migration Assistant Does Not See Attached External Disk

I just purchased a MacBook Air to replace an aging MacBook Pro.  Both are running the latest Mountain Lion (10.8.3).  I want to move my files from the MBP to the MBA using Migration Assistant.  I first tried doing this over wi-fi, but when I learned it would take more than 99 hours, I chose to cancel the operation.
So I connected a new Seagate HD to the MBP and configured Time Machine to back up to it.  I let Time Machine run all day, creating hourly updates after the initial backup.  I then disconnected the drive, attached it to the MBA and rebooted.  I ran Migration Assistant and chose to migrate from a Time Machine backup.  However, Migration Assistant does not see the disk.  Yet the disk is mounted on the desktop, I can read and write to it, and I can see the Time Machine backups.  Only Migration Assistant seems unable to recognize the disk.
This isn't the first time I've had problems with MA (see my posting history).  When it works, it's terrific - my new computer has all the settings and preferences as the old.  My applications are all registered and operational.  So I'm very frustrated that I can't get it to work with my new MBA.  It really does diminish the experience of getting a new computer.  That, plus I don't want to spend days and weeks moving things over manually, re-installing, etc.
C'mon, Apple.  Why is Migration Assistant so difficult?  I'd chalk it up to user error, but this many times?

So, finally after fourten hours of unattended "migration," I let it continue overnight and in the morning found that the time remaining had not moved a minute.  I canceled MA and found that not one iota of data had transferred.
As far as I'm concerned, Migration Assistant ranks lower on the Apple success list than Open Doc, Newton, Pink and Taligent.
Now I have to manually install software I want to use on the MBA, apply licenses, and all the other stuff I would expect from Windows.
    NOT happy.

  • Bootcamp does not see replacement DVD drive in Mac Pro3,1

Recently purchased  LG Super-Multi Drive - Mac Pro Kit 24X 5.25" Internal DVD/CD Writer from OWC and installed it in lower DVD drive according to the manuel provided including wire to Sata plug in Mac Pro3,1. A difference is that Top of 2 DVD ports has a faulty drawer door so I have removed the original Apple DVD device from it.
I now have  DVD access/play  using LG in Mountain Lion with bottom Drive but none at all in Boot Camped Windows 7 or 8 which do not see the SATA drive in lower drawer.
Wondering if there is any fix for this.

My Latest email back & forth with OWC:
My Mac Pro is 3,1 early 2008. My understanding before purchase was that it would work in Mt. Lion and Windows.
Is there anyone who knows how to make this work?
This is a very well known issue that was discovered shortly after the 2006 Mac Pro first shipped.
    Sincerely,
    OWC Andy

  • IMac does not see my external HD...but my MacBook Air does

I have a Toshiba 1TB HD that I partitioned into iMac and PC.  I run my backup on it with no problems.  Then I got a Time Capsule and set it up.  Now my iMac does not see my HD any more. But my Mac Book Air picks it up. You can see the 2 partitions on the MBA.  I also cant see it in my Disk Utilities and "Mount" is not clickable. I tried to use different USB ports as well as different USB cables.

What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device...
If the issue persists, try these steps:
       1. Shut down the computer.
       2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
       3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
       4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
       5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.

  • My MacBook pro does not see my external hard drive

I have an external hard drive La Cie (Porsche 250 gb).
    Once I disconected it incorrectly.
Since that time it doesen't work
More specifically when I try to work with the hard drive the following message appears:
    'Eject; Initialize or ignore'
I also tried to verify the disk with 'Disk Utility' but it doesn't work
Does someone know how I could access to the disk without formatting it?
    Thank you
    Lorenzo

I also tried to verify the disk with 'Disk Utility' but it doesn't work
I assume that mean your can "see" the external from DU? Normally, if DU can see the disk but can't repair it, you'll need something stronger like DiskWarrior. DW's strength is in recovering and rebuilding directories, the cause of most drive problems.

  • LR not seeing my external drive in Library Mode but does at Import

    Hi Team,
I filled up a WD drive and got a new Seagate drive that I've put the last few batches of photos on. Wanting to visit a few photos on the WD drive (that remained in the same USB port as always), I noticed LR wasn't listing it in Library Mode. If I hit Import, it lists it and acts like none of the images have ever been imported before.
I also have a 3rd larger drive that backed up the WD drive. In library mode, LR does see that drive.
I am wondering how I can get the WD drive located by LR again ensuring that my edits to the images are there as well.
FYI, I did do a catalog backup of the Seagate drive. Perhaps that new catalog only backed up the Seagate drive and can't see the WD drive? (but then why would the larger backup drive...)
Thanks for any help you can lend.
    Daniel

Thanks for the reply. I have imported and edited tons of images from the WD drive. So definitely been imported from before. It shows up nowhere on the list. Not as the original drive I had been using, nor as a drive with ?s. Somehow, though, my other 2 drive letters/names did change. One I was able to point to the old location. The other is asking me if I want to combine/merge as the folder already exists. I cancelled this request.
I did try to use the previous catalog from File-Open Recent. None of the drives showed up. No collections, etc. So I went back to the latest catalog. Same issue exists.
    Thanks so much.

  • HT201250 Time machine does not recognize WD external drive

Time machine and back-ups worked fine on my MacBookPro. It stopped working, no I believe it is still working but the MackBookPro does not recognize it and when clicking "Back up" I receive the message that the external drive is not available. Thanks to Bootcamp the computer also has a Windows side which I use mainly to run a soaring flight simulator called Condor. When I turn on the MacBookPro and click on "Choice" the window I receive shows the Mac and Windows operating systems, the Back-up and "My Passport." When I click on "My passport" it actually opens...When I turn the computer off and reboot it again there is no sign of "My Passport."
Now, I have a second WD My Passport which I bought for the Windows side of the computer. When I attach it before turning on the computer, I shows up on Finder, however, when I click "Back up" here it seems like it is starting back-up but only for a few seconds and then I get the message that the drive is a Windows formatted drive and that a back-up cannot be completed.
Why does the Windows formatted drive show up in Finder and also when I run the Windows side, however, the driver for the Mac does not show up on Finder?
I now have only the Mac formatted external drive attached and I just received the following messages: Can't back up. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

OK, so it sounds like you have a Mac formatted drive that you have used previously for Time Machine, and disconnected it for a few weeks, and you can now see files on it OK from your Mac. However, when the system tries to run a Time Machine backup, you get an error message "Can't backup. Reformat the disk. Files can still be read but the drive can no longer be used for back-ups. Get a new external drive. Run back-ups as soon as possible."
I have not seen this problem before, and would recommend that you look through the Time Machine troubleshooting information at http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
For instance, http://pondini.org/TM/B1.html or http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html could help in your situation.  I'm assuming (but probably shouldn't) that you've verified that your hard drive doesn't need repair (another Disk Utility function) and that there is still a Time Machine backup on that drive - look for the directory Backups.backupdb.
I hope that helps.  If not, perhaps someone with more Time Machine knowledge will pop along soon to help you further.
