FCPX in AD/GCN environment?

Has anyone used FCPX on Macs where login is authenticated via a network?  The application, user home directory and all media will reside on local drives; it's just authenticating login to the workstation which will happen via the network.
We're slowly migrating our university campus from Novell.  I have several Macs in my lab imaged and ready to make the leap so we can troubleshoot any problems prior to the start of fall classes.  It would be helpful to know if we need to anticipate any difficulty.
Thanks for any responses!

  • How can I separate FCPX projects and events on external drive?

    Hi there!
I'm working on a Mac Pro with two drives. One drive contains the OSX and the second drive I use to store video media. I'm running FCPX 10.0.4.
The Mac Pro is used in a teaching environment (i.e. creative suite, FCPX, iMovie, etc).
Each tutor has their own user account for their own students (i.e. Fish account for one tutor, Mouse account for another tutor). Each user account is specially setup for the apps that that particular tutor teaches.
With FCP7 I setup individual capture folders on the second drive for each user account. The FCP7 capture scratch for each tutor was set to a specific folder on the capture drive...i.e.
    capture/fish/final_cut_pro_documents/
    or
    capture/mouse/final_cut_pro_documents/
The issue with FCPX is that if you capture to a second drive it saves the Events and Projects to the Root of the drive. This means that all captured/imported video footage from all of the user areas will be saved in one location and will be bunched together in the FCPX events and projects list.
    Workaround 1:
A workaround would be to capture all footage to the OSX bootable drive so that all Events and Projects are stored in the individual user Movies folder, but I'm wary of using one drive to run the OS and High Def video footage for drive speed issues.
    Workaround 2:
Another workaround would be to partition the capture drive into separate partitions for each tutor, but then one tutor may fill up their drive quicker than others and then I''d have to repartition the drive to allow for more space! (bearing in mind we have 17 Macs all setup in the same way!)
    Workaround 3:
I've also tried making symbolic links from each user Movies folder to a specific location on the capture drive, but no luck.
Does anyone know of a workaround which might work?
    With many thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

    Hi Tom,
Firstly, thank you for your reply.
From your experience, can you setup Event Manager X to automatically hide all events and projects except those edited on a specific user account...for all user accounts...or is this something a new student would have to do manually before starting a new project?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

  • FCPX has suddenly started crashing when trying to import media

I updated FCPX to 10.0.8 a couple of weeks ago and everything has been fine until today (I'm fully updated with Mountain Lion as well) .  Now every time I try to import media, FCPX crashes. This occurs right after I hit the "Import Selected" button -- and occurs regardless of type of media, where I'm importing it from, or how many clips.  I get a very long error message -- I've attached just the first part of it (through Thread 0) below.  The entire error message runs through Thread 37.
The only thing I did right before this happoened was to delete some old unused applications that were not even on the system HD (they were on a different internal HD - drive A).  The applications included very old versions of Final Cut and iMovie that had not been opened in a couple of years.  After I did this, FCPX suddenly started to recognize another internal HD (drive C) as a camera for the first time, and tried to import a bunch of old home movies, which it has never done before.  And ever since then it started crashing when trying to import new media -- even after I "ejected" drive C.
Any ideas?  I'm at a total loss and in the middle of a big project for a client, and could really use some help.  Thanks!

I'th Mountain Lion as well.  *and FCPX 10.0.7

Update: the problem is definitely with the internal HD "drive C".  Before restarting FCPX after the last crash I unmounted the C drive -- then restarted FCPX and was able to import media just fine.  I thought I had tried this already, but I guess not.
So, what did I change with my C drive when I deleted the old apps off my A drive?  There is both an iMovie events and projects folder on the C drive -- but FCPX has never tried to import them until after I deleted the old iMovie app (I still have the most recent version of iMovie on my system drive -- but have never used it to open these old folders).  I read on another thread on this forum that if I "hid" these folders, FCPX would not try to recognize them, so I moved them to within another folder on the same drive -- but FCPX is still trying to recognize and show them when the Import Media window is launched --  and still shows the C drive as a camera.
So, what can I do to stop this from happening?
    Thanks!

  • FCPX or Premier?  Ouch

2 years ago, our non-profit organization started producing videos for broadcast on our local NBC affiliate.  Two professional mentors (both in our town, both do major national work, one is a multi-million dollar company) told us to use FCP7 (or they wouldn't help).  So, while we had Adobe Premier, we switched to FCP7.  The transcoding from our AVCHD cameras was painful.  Much of the talk on the forum at the time was "AVCHD" is not professional, so don't expect it to work with FCP7.  We lived with the problems, and we learned to love FCP7.  Now, everything seems to be AVCHD or .mov.
FCPX comes out.  We buy a copy to try it out.  It's OK.  We don't know much.  Now, our mentors are abandoning FCP in favor of Premier.  This is wierd.  They would live and die by Apple 24 months ago, but now they're all reluctantly moving to Premier.  Now, these companies have heavy investment in FCP.  I saw rooms full of Apple servers rendering (and heating their building) 2 years ago.  Now, they're going Premier.  HELP?
I don't want to retrain, and I love the Apple look and usabilty, at least of FCP7.  But, we nearly missed a major broadcast on network (regional) TV because of transcoding issues on FCP7.  But, the contractors we hire to do work are now saying "We're leaving FCP for Premier..."
I really don't like Adobe.  It's ugly and hard to use.  But we need to either move to FCPX or Premier.  The gravity is moving toward Premier (at least in our city).  Apple isn't developing FCP7, and X is not what pros want.  What do I do?  It doesn't help that FCPX doesn't read files from either FCP7 or Premier.

Stick with FCP for as long as it does what you need. Those editors who used to use it, but are now switching to Premiere, still know how to use it.  Disney Channel is in the same boat...just invested in Final Cut Server when everything hit the fan.  They still use FCP 7 and it works well.
AVCHD...well, that's a tough format.  Even in Premiere, unless you have BEEFY machines with loads of RAM and high end graphics cards...working native with it will be painful.  Transcoding time needs to be built into your schedule.
As for re-training people if you switch to Premiere...well, you'll need to re-train people if you switch to FCX too. It is unlike FCP in almost every way.  And in big ways too.  Premiere is a decent app, but not quite up to snuff yet, IMHO.  Close...very close, but FCP 7 still does many things way better, like capture/output tape formats, output split track audio, work in a shared environment better (multiple stations working on the same project), has far better media management, better audio mixing capabilities...and lots of other small things. PPro is advanced in other areas...so there is give and take.
PPro will accept XMLs of full projects from FCP 7...bin structure, captured media...everything.  Very slick.  FCX will work with 7toX, but in a more limited way. Lots of things don't come over.  Because FCX is very unlike FCP 7 in almost every way, where PPro is very similar.  PPro also has an option to set up the keyboard commands to match FCP 7, to enable an easier transition for the editors.
Move only when you need to. Don't feel pressure because "that's what everyone is doing." If FCP works for your needs now...keep using it. When a need arises that it cannot solve, but another NLE can...then consider the move.  Or, when you have the budget to do it.
FCX isn't designed with broadcast in mind...food for thought. Some people have gotten it to work, and it is making more steps BACK to broadcast. But that's not it's original intention.  The web and DVD and BluRay is.

  • Restoring the events folder in fcpx

How do you restore the events folder in fcpx? Now the 'project' is only the sequence and not the project any more, if your events drive gets corrupt or stops working you'll need a way to recapture the files into the events folder exactly the same way as they were before otherwise they won't reconnect to your 'project' and you'll have lost all your work.....Please don't suggest backing it up that's just not viable in a professional environment .....
    Cheers,
    Reg.

What... 'Professionals' don't back things up? Are you insane??
Lion sorts this out by the way...
Appreciated!! I knew it was a stupid thing to say the moment I hit send!
Of course things are backed up but I'm thinking about scenarios where you're on a quick turn around award show for example, you might not have had the time to back everything up yet and you have a serious deadline. Or a job such as a concert is awaiting band approval and gets put on hold for ages and you need the drive space until it comes back in a year later, or you finish a job and a months later you need to re-edit it but the media's been deleted, or you have a fire / buglary and both copies are destroyed or lost, or the clients can only supply low quality / ungraded media on tape and you need to relink to the treated / online media later in the job. These are all things that happen and will continue to happen for some time,  besides the fact that to hold every single bit of media you ever loaded on backup for a facility is going to take a **** of a lot of space and is unnecessary and unchargeable.
I understand the archiving thing and the back up thing but what I was trying to say was that working in a professional environment you need belt and braces and the final thing to fall back on should be a small data file enabling you to recreate your event folder should you need to, as we've been able to do for good reason since electronic editing began.
"We'll use the back up... what do you mean it's corrupt?" - I just don't want to ever be in that position.
Back up is our responsibility but archiving has to be a client chargeable thing and many won't want to pay when on all other systems the small Project file allows them to re load from their masters. They also won't want hundreds of drives in their production offices!
    Just thinking ahead . . .
    Reg.

  • What can I do in Adobe that I can't in FCPX? + Why does FCPX have a bad reputation

Somewhere else, I was told that disgruntled Apple users where going to Adobe and leaving FCPX
    Why is this?
What can be done in the Adobe suite of programs that isn't handled well in FCPX?
Is FCPX an all in one solution?
Does it allow me to do everything that can be done in After Effects for example? (I ask without actually knowing what After Effects is for - I've just heard it mentioned looadds)
Why does FCPX have a bad reputation?
I've read that it's not backwards compatible with previous version
That *****! But... doesn't effect me as I'm coming in as a new user
    Thanks

Different editors have different needs, and while FCP X offers some really innovative features it lacks other things that some editors need in order to be competitive/get work in their environment. It is not just what you can actually edit (read: tell a story) with a piece of software but also about format support, workflows, collaboration to name just a few.
FCP X is an editor with a few effects built in, in addition to which you can get Compressor for output and Motion for VFX. Adobe actually offers a whole suite of products that range from editing to VFX, from color grading to Blu-Ray authoring.

FCP X is not an all-in-one solution. As I said above it is an editor with a few built-in effects and titles.
After Effects is for visual effects, green screen .... stuff like that. It is quite powerful but does not actually have anything to do with editing itself (that is Premiere)

Because when it was released many features that editors were relying on/accustomed to were missing (XML support to name only one at random) which caused many to switch to Adobe or Avid. That fact that some of these features were added back in subsequent updates didn't really seem to repair the damage.
Since you are a new user get the trial version and give it a go. You will need a fast machine with lots of RAM and fast external storage.

  • SCORM packaging from FCPX??

I need to create SCORM packages for my Learning Management System (LMS) with my FCPX projects.  I was told by Apple that this was possible when I bought the program.  I cannot find where to do this. What am I missing?  Would Compressor make this easier?  I have searched and searched, but I am finding very little that is helpful.  Please help!

    Hi Stacey,
Great question. I'm part of the SCORM Cloud team at Rustici Software. We specialize in SCORM and I think we  have a solution for your problem.
You can create SCORM packages using your exisiting videos pretty easily using ScoTube. ScoTube is a tool inside of SCORM Cloud that converts your existing videos, or even videos on YouTube, into SCORM courses. All you have to do is sign up for a free trial account to be able to convert your videos. Keep in mind that the trial account does have  a 100MB storage limit and you can only create 10 registrations.
When it comes to delivering your video courses to your LMS, you could either export your course (requires a paid account) as a stand-alone course and import it in to your LMS environment or you can use Dispatch. Dispatch is a package that is hosted on SCORM Cloud but sent to your LMS. With Dispatch, you remain in control of your content and you get unparalled tracking and reporting on what's going on between your learners and your courses.
If you would like a demo of how this works inside of SCORM Cloud, I'd be happy to show you around. Feel free to contact me directly at jena.lawing<at>scorm<dot>com.
    Thanks!

  • FCPX - How to get this effect

I am in total awe of the effect in this video. Can someone tell me how to achieve it in FCPX? A video is playing through the silouette of a man's body or so it seems.
    http://youtu.be/KLVq0IAzh1A

I see Sting, a daylight shot of people walking around and a "nighttime" clip as an overall background (the two scenes: walking people and the darker background are the same "scene" (same angle) -- one populated by people (in "clean environment") and the other -- everything overgrown by vines -- Sting cuts a silhouette of the walking people over the scene overgrown by vines... and in the dark.
You can do a similar effect by using the same clip (duplicated) as the lighter and darker scenes and colorize (manipulate the exposure of)  the "background" scene as something darker -- or simply different.
Anyway, there are 3 basic clips involved.
I'm going to modify my original suggestion somewhat (silhouette luma doesn't really work as well as I expected it to):
I duplicated the effect here (but not with the best material - the dark jacket doesn't really improve the effect):
This is the set up for the two clips that make the compound. The top clip is the green screen keyed and the blend mode set to Stencil Alpha (a change from my original post). It creates a mask for the background in the shape of the green screened person. The background/lower layer is the clip with the lighter/normal exposure (similar to the people walking around clip.)
In the storyline (moved back out of the compound) the compound video is synchronized over the same background clip IN the compound (in the Sting version - the background scene is overgrown with vines and there are no people, but it is the same camera POV as the walking people layer) [The red X indicates that the top layer is currently disabled -- I bring it back in below.]
In this image -- I have applied a deep darkening (global setting) in the selected (storyline) layer.
Finallly, the green screen clip is overlaid on top of everything, and the opacity is set to about 85% (in this example.)
    HTH (and hope it's clear)

  • Parallel use of fcpx and fcp7 in late macbook pro 2011

I am happily running fcpx under Lion, however, have a lot of old projects on fcp7.
I was unable to install fcp7 under lion to the late 2011 macbook pro 17, and this might anyways be a bad idea, as it eats a lot of terabytes on boot volume.
Just want to share my workaraund, as it took quite an effort to figure out:
    1) MAKE A BOOTABLE CLONE OF LION BOOT DRIVE ON EXTERNAL FIREWIRE DISK USING SUPERDUPER OR CARBON COPY CLONER.
    2) BOOT FROM THE EXTERNAL LION BOOT DRIVE AND PARTITION THE INTERNAL DRIVE ON LION BOOT AND SNOW LEOPARD BOOT
    3) CLONE THE LION BACK TO THE LION PARTITION
    4) BOOT FROM 10.64 SNOW LEOPARD INSTALLER DISK AND INSTALL SNOW LEOPARD 10.6.4 TO THE SNOW LEOPARD PARTITION OF INTERNAL DRIVE
    5) NOW BOOT FROM THE NEW INTERNAL SNOW LEOPARD DISK, AND RUN SNOW LEOPARD 10.6.8 UPDATER
    6) INSTALL QUICKTIME 7.6.6 (THE LINK IS SOMEWHERE ON THE APPLE PAGES) IT SPECIFICLY NEEDS TO BE 7.6.6., NOTHING ELSE.
    7) INSTALL FCP7 FROM THE ORIGINAL INSTALL DISKS
NOW YOU CAN BOOT FCPX OF LION PARTITION AND FCP7 OF THE SNOW LEOPARD PARTITION, DEPENDING WHAT YOU WANT TO WORK ON.
NOTE THAT THE LEOPARD PARTITION ONLY NEEDS 24 GB OF USED SPACE, IF YOU DONT INSTALL MOTION AND AUDIO CONTENT PARTS OF FCP7.

You dont need lion at all, but you might need an external boot disk for the preparation.
Some resellers have reported cernel panic type problems if trying to install snow leopard directly on a macobook pro IF that macbook pro originally shipped with Lion. They say, there might be a chip preventing non Lion installs.
So, I would just for safety, prepare everything on an external drive, then boot of that exptrenal drive a couple of times to be sure it works, and then clone it over to your internal boot drive.
Anyways, if I put the Snow Leopard as startup drive in system preferencies, I would be able to work only on Snow Leopard environment. Personally, I like having both, as I like studying FCPX's possiblities in projects which permit it.

  • FCPX - command plus opens dashboard???

FCP X Randomly started opening my dashboard when I press (command and plus) to zoom in on the timeline.
Now when I need to zoom in,  the widget manager pops up under my dock, but I'm still looking at FCPX with floating close buttons all over the screen that would normally appear on widgets that you want to remove.
FCPX is so buggy, When is 10.1 coming? For that matter just give me 10.5 and fix it all. I love the idea of learning how to edit differently after 5 years (just a lil sarcasm) but to do it in a faulty environment frustrates me to no end... or perhaps to jump ship...

1st, make sure in your System Preferences you have F keys set to work as F keys, and that keyboard shortcuts are set to system default.
2nd, a lot of us are not getting this behavior.  Get "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (free) and trash FCP X pref files.  This clears up most bugs.

  • FCPX and speed problems with new external hard drive

    Hi All,
I have just bought a new Thunderbolt drive.   I created a very large disk image partition to separate my fcpx files from other iTunes type files - but strangely FCPX is now operating slower than it ever did when I was using 800 firewire.
Any thoughts on why this might be the case?  I have encryption on the disk image (but it is the minimum amount).
Also - FCPX hangs regularly (when I go to Finder it states that the app is not responding) but then after 1 min, is back.   The whole environment is now less stable than when i was simply using  a 800 firewire drive with a disk image.
All OS and FCPX is up to date.
    Any suggestions/comments appreciated.
    Best,
    R

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for the tip.  I ran the app (quite a nifty app at that) and my speed tests for the main drive are Read 133 mbps and Write 137 mbps.  Which is not as high as I would expect for a Thunderbolt drive - does this sound right?
Anyhow, I ran the same test on the Disk Image. And something is definitely wrong.  Read 1.4 mbps and Write 1.5 mbps
Now I am scratching my head about this hard drive.   It is a single partition - nothing fancy.  Only this large Disk Image that is for media.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Best,
    R

  • Win7 Screen Capture - PluralEyes - FCPX

I work in Automation Controls thereby I'm forced to use software that exclusively runs on Win7. I am producing some product demo videos for which I need to perform screen capture in the Win7 environment.
I need to record the screen and the computer mic audio, so that subsequently I can sync the audio to that which was recorded on my Zoom H4N. Today, I tried (3) separate screen captures on WIN7 (LiteCAM, CamStudio, and Microsoft's own Expression Encoder Screen Recorder). I can't seem to export anything from these applications that is suitable for PluralEyes, and subsequently, FCPX.
Some of you must be doing something similar here: Screen capture on PC, export file to mac, sync in plural eyes (mac edition), and import into FCPX or iMovie.
Please help me by telling me which screen capture software to use and what workflow to use!
    sincerely,
    ben

Though fcpx has many ways to get things done as one can just sync clips or use the multicam options. I found both the Izzy tutorials, and everything from Ripple training to be gentle to my less than genius brain.
And here is what Apple says works for fcpx including what codecs work...look down on the list.

  • X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro

    Hi
I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
    Macbook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
    The reasons are these:
    1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
    2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
I've put more discussion of these things here

  • Using a VMware Fusion XP environment with multiple Mac users

    Hi,
I have installed an XP environment using VMware Fusion. I am only able to start this XP environment when logged in as the user that created it. How can I grant access to this environment to other MAC users on my machine?
    Any input is much appreciated.
    Kind regards, Hans.

Thanks all, thanks for your input. I have been able to solve it now.
As suggested I moved the VMWARE file to the shared folder. Then I assigned read/write access rights to the specific users. This is something I had not tried before. Somehow just moving to the shared folder did not change access rights on file level.
    Thanks all,
    Hans.

  • FCPX how many times can it install on the same computer?

From time to time I like to wipe the drives and start afresh or, whenever there is a new OS, I will perform a clean install. This entails wiping the drive and reloading all software. Most of the apps have 'de-authorize' function, this allows me to use the same licence number for the next re install.
Any idea how FCPX would install after say, four five drive refreshes? Can it understand that it is no longer resident on any machine?
Please note: I do understand how many machines I can install on at one time. This is not the same.

You can install FCPX as many time you wish
