FCPX - instant playback of video clips

Have just downloaded trial FCPX in order to speed up the importing of HD clips onto my Macbook Air - works a treat!
However I now need to know how I can instantly playback the video clip full screen size and at the same time see the timer, as well as FF, PLAY, PAUSE, STOP and BACK controls so I can easily and quickly play certain parts.

Tom, the fact is I'm not sure.
What I am looking to do is simply play back video clips from my camcorder as soon as they are imported to the laptop - I have no need to edit them.
When I play the clips, my clients need to view them on a large screen or projector in the room we are working in. I attach the large screen to the laptop via an Apple miniport to VGA (sorry not RGB) adapter, then a VGA cable to the large screen.
(I plug in speakers into the laptop for sound if the large screen / projector does not have speakers...)
In an earlier reply you mentioned that the functionality I am looking for is not possible with one monitor, hence me describing in more detail about the use of a second screen / projector in the hope that might provide a solution.

Jerky playback of video clips in iMovie

Just purchased a Sony Handycam (DCR-SR37E), and the movie playback is very jerky: the red line doesn't flow smoothly through the clips and the playback correspondingly jumps about. The sound is unaffected - it plays back smoothly.
Is this a problem with the computer being too old and slow (iMac G5) or is it a Sony vs Mac issue?

Wow- what a pain!! Just got the brand new MacBook ($999 version) for Christmas, and edited movie in iMovie 09....When I play it certain clips are extremely jerky on playback when I try to convert to youtube or quicktime...Latest Leopard OS- Flip Camcorder...So, basically, the Christmas video is ruined- even though the actual clips are fine...And its strange, because on playback different clips are jerky at different times...Anyone????

Gapless playback of video clips

I took a few movie clips on my camcorder and imported them into IMovie HD. I would like to join or stick together all those seperate clips so that when I playback it would be just one long video without any pauses inbetween the clips.
Does anyone know how I can get this done? After I find a way to do this part I am planning on using iDVD to create a home dvd for me.

You need to place the clips in the clip viewer/timeline at the bottom of the iMovie window and then just play. (Make sure no clips are selected to play them all).

Is it possible to pause a video clip?

Hi,
Could anybody tell me if it possible to pause a video clip for a few frames and then resume playing later in the project?
I guess I could chop the video clip into several discrete shorter clips and create some static freezeframes, and then play them all one after the other to crate the same effect.
But that sounds clumsy so I wondered if there is a way to pause/resume a video clip within a project.

Many thanks for the pointers. I excitedly booted-up Motion to explore further...
... but I couldn't find anything called Timing remap or re-timing etc. Then it dawned on me that I should have specified that I'm still using Motion 2, and I guess those features are only available in Motion 3?
However, armed with the new phrase 'Timing Remap', I dived back into Google and came up with this article:

This explains how to use the Scrub filter (also available in Motion 2) to control the playback of video clips relative to the project.
Its a bit fiddly, but I'm comfortable with basic arithmetic, so I can certainly use it to achieve the effect I want (basicaly I need a video clip to pause and then resume a few times throughout a project).

How to remove the iPhoto video clips from the iMovie Event Library

Hi,
The new iMovie took a couple of hours to index my iPhoto video clips. That didn't bother me so much as I have 2564 video clips in my iPhoto library.
However, when I launch iMovie, it now takes approximately 30 minutes to be ready for use.
Is there anyway to de-register the iPhoto video clips in iMovie?
I'll switch to only importing the clips I want to work with as iMovie does not appear to be written to handle a large quantity of video clips efficiently (for the G5 cpu anyway).
Perhaps if when selecting "iPhoto Videos" in the Event Library, it would first show the video clips divided into Events as with the new iPhoto approach. Would surely be quicker to scroll through. Scrolling through the video clips is far to slow.
iMovie won't even playback the video clips without pausing every couple of seconds. My iPhoto library lives on my internal drive.

Synching one audio clip amongst several video clips

I got media from a client:
3 x video clips (with camera-mic audio attached)
and
1 (one) long continuous audio clip recorded seperately, which speaks to ALL three video clips
The audio guy did NOT start/stop his recording when the camera guy start/stopped his camea. (Hence, the three video clips, versus the ONE long continous audio clip.)
The audio guy did NOT clap-slate (Argh!)
I went to "synchronize" the clips in FCPX. The first video clip synched up just fine.
However, the other two video clips did not.
Q: How can I help FCPX along to synchronize the one, long conitnous audio clip to the three SEPERATE video clips?

If the three video clips string out with the single audio file, in the inspector assign the sane camera angle to all three clips and them make a multicam clip of all four items.

Instant playback of uploaded h264 clip?

Does anyone know how to get instant playback of an uploaded h264 file. At the moment my files (8-10 mb :90 sec duration ) take 10 to 20 sec to start playing, -while showing a static QT logo. I optimized for streaming in settings. I have viewed other clips which play instantly. Do I need additional software for instant playback? Can I put in a countdown logo on while clip is downloading?.
My concern is that people might percieve the clip has failed to download because all that appears initially is the QT logo for 10 to 20 sec.
Any ideas would be really appreciated

At present I shoot in HD 16:9 (export settings : 320x240 QVGA). Should I shoot in 4:3 for QT export and for larger screen size.
Always shoot in whichever aspect ratio suits your needs or desires. Just make sure your final product either has the same aspect ratio or is "cropped" (not "scaled") to your final dimensions. Having said that, I generally prefer a 16:9 aspect ratio but have also been know to use a 3:2 or so-called "35 mm" aspect ratio.
Also I edit/export to QT from imovie 3 which does not appear to allow me to compress audio but mearly apply certain settings i.e mono 64 khz etc.
Believe an upgrade to at least iMovie v4.5 would greatly improve your import/export situation. (Check with your local MUG and see if anyone is willing to part with a copy at little or no cost.)
Should I start using QT pro and import completed imovie file for audio compression, larger screen size etc or would you recommend other software?
If you really have no access to AAC audio from iMovie 3, would definitely recommend outputting iMovie 3 edits as a referenced QT file and then opening them in QT Pro for one-step conversion to final H.264/AAC format at corrected aspect ratio. (As to alternate software, I like MPEG Streamclip where cropping is required/desired.) With regard to actual display size, now that you've seen "how low you can go" as far as data rates are concerned, would recommend you make some 1-minute test clips at various data rates and display dimension combinations to determine your personal preferences when it comes to quality vs size issues for your site. You might, for instance, prefer a 400 x 225 (16:9/macro-16) display over your "should have been" 320 x 180 (16:9/macro-16) display.

Since your camera input quality looks pretty good, I would personally target my video data rate at 300-320 kbps and mono audio at 44.1 kHz/64 kbps at 23.98 fps for initial testing and see what you like best. (This represents a small trade off in data rate/file size for quality.) Also check to see how much difference the 1-pass/2-pass option makes in your eyes. Whatever you do, enjoy it.

Entire frame of mini-dv video clips do NOT show in the iMovie '11 viewer in playback mode

I am editing a wedding video in iMovie11 that was recorded on a mini dv tape. When I move video clips from the event library to the timeline, the entire frame is displayed in the timeline. However, the entire frame of the video clip does NOT show in the iMovie viewer or when I playback the video. I exported the video and burned it to a dvd using Toast 11 pro. The video recorded to the dvd as it was showing in the iMovie viewer... the full frame does not show. I would certainly appreciate any advice as to how to solve my problem. THANK YOU!!!

Is your video shot in 16:9 aspect ratio or 4:3?
You can go to File/Project Properties and set the aspect ratio for the project.
When you get a clip that does not match the project's aspect ratio, you use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tool on the middle toolbar to specify how it should be treated.
FIT will place the entire clip in the movie, and will letterbox (black bars) so that it fits.
CROP will fill the screen, but will cut off the top and bottom of your frame.

User defines video clip order for playback

I would like to have a site that has several vieo clips in a
library where the user could drag and drop to a time line for video
playback. I have seen this but am ot sure if it is a third party
program or created rightin flash.
For instance
The user sees three short video clips and can view each one.
They can then drag these to any orrd they want in a timeline and
then view all three at once as a "complete video." can anyone

"You can't" is the sad answer to this questioned topic.
I wanted such a simple move yesterday in Flash, but was literally depressed to learn that you "can't" keyframe a move on a video clip in Flash. Shame on you Adobe! Today, as suggested in this , I am trying to get that same keyframed move in AE, and am failing because keyframes and the graph editor make NO SENSE!!! So, in Flash "you can't", and now today in AFTER EFFECTS - "you can't either".......
I've been producing broadcast 3D animation for nearly 25 years, and have produced some of the finest complex keyframing in Lightwave, Softimage and 3D Studio Max. I do realize that those are 3D programs, but a keyframe is a keyframe, and the defined functions of bezier vs linear in a graph editor should be consistant everywhere. There is no consistancy of keyframe usage and function WITHIN the Adobe family of animation softwares! Adobe - you lie by telling me that I can keyframe in After Effects - your keyframing is very difficult to manage and unpredictable - and your graph editor is an absolute joke, which deserves deletion! Oh you can keyframe in AE - ONLY if you just want to go from point A to point B with NOTHING ELSE. Only 2 keyframes at a time, and don't you dare try to mix bezier with linear keyframes in AE either!,,,, lets keep everyone safe now, by keeping keyframing -constrained at Pre-School Levels please.

FCPX 10.1: why is some video clips shown with a connected clip icon ?

But after conversion, in the browser, why are there some video clips shown with a connected clip icon ? And it doesn't play ?

The edited project was 60 seconds making up an intricate title sequence involving 24 video segments and 48 png/ PSD files. Had a brain storm and was wondering if there is anyway the the project could move to another event so currently going through all the event folders on my FCPX edit drive. I just can't see how a project can just vanish.

The simple answer is to put the clips together in a project in the desired order and export (oops, the new word is share [YUK!]) a master file.
But maybe you should say a little more about the clips to determine whether the answer I've given is relevant to yor situation.

I really need some help!!
I have started a new FCPx event (saved to my external hard drive) and every single time I upload video clips (.MOV) to Final Cut Pro, everything looks normal and great but within a minute or less, it says that there is a file missing (for each clip that i have imported) and the clip turns red. The clips still play fine and I can continue editing, but I don't understand why it keeps saying the file is missing??? I have tried relinking these clips with their originals found on my external harddrive, but again, after a few seconds, it says "1 file missing".
Am I importing these clips incorrectly? Are they corrupt files?
I appreciate any advice.

I was assisted yesterday by your technical support team to install the photoshop elements 12 & premiere elements 12 which I purchased e few minutes prior.
while trying to work with the premiere elements 12, I realised that I have no audio on playback of imported mpg2 video clip while editing.
How can I solve this audio setting problem?

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
Is the lack of audio in the Editing area of the program confined to this one particular MPG2 video clip?
What are the properties of this video file? If you do not know
a. perhaps the brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the video might give us the information we need for troubleshooting
b. if not, consider getting that information from MediaInfo (Tree View)

Did you discover the loss of audio for the video file after you had created a narration clip with the program's Narration Tool?
If you have not already, please check the settings under Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware and its ASIO settings (including Input and Output enablement).

Playback problems and video freezes due to plugins being used on video clips?

I am editing with Premiere, and dealing with playback issues and video freezes as I apply plugins to each video clip. Not sure how to fix this problem. I am a mac user, but I cannot upgrade my graphics card, so I am wondering how to fix this issue.
