FCPX Messes up Scenes on Timeline - Scary!!

Im about 40% through a short film, have a 3 week deadline.. going ok until this morning when i opened FCPX and at least 3 scenes were what appeaered to be randomised on the timeline.. screwing video and audio! I thought was having a nightmare.. a section in the timeline that took almost 10 hours seemingly completely messed up! the scenes and audio before and after on the timeline seemed ok. Pondering on what to do next and not wanting to touch the timeline I restarted fcpx praying it was just my imagination and then.. PING!! All was back to normal!!
I have absolutely no idea .. don't even know where to begin to troubleshoot this one! Thus far I have duplicated the timeline hoping it will serve as a back up.
Q. Has anybody experienced this with FCPX 10.1.3 ? Im using a new Late2013 Mac Pro (8 core, 64Gigs RAM, D700, 1TB HDD - 8TB Thunderbolt G-TEC RAID Video Drives with Yosemite - all latest everything!)
Thanks.

Looks like the culprit was a rogue fcpx transition. After removing it, I have not see not seen the issue.. and that was 2 weeks ago! However, 2 days ago, one of my clips appeared as another video clip!! I did a Undo, and it returned back to its original clip again?! Very, very strange! All-in-all, FCPX is stable, just need to keep a check on what FCPX is doing to the clips sometimes. Definitely a bug of some sort in FCPX 10.1.3, Now I'm on 10.1.4 - so far, so good. Film moving into next phase of post-production.

What version are you using? Were you editing inside a project, or did you open a clip into the timeline?

When I first went through tutorials, I had the buttons along

At one point, I was getting an error message indicated some

Is this what the problem is? What do I do to get edit mode

  • Blank scene in timeline won't go away

Hello all - I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 4 on my Dell 610 Windows XP 2002.
While dropping clips into the sceneline, a blank space appeared between clips. I've just right clicked before and "delete just scene" has worked. Unfortunately, now it doesn't and when I switch to the timeline to see if I can do it there, I cannot see all of my video and audio tracks.
I've gotten the error about reseting the desktop display mode, but from what I've read here, that is not a serious issue. Hopefully, the two are not connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt

In timeline mode, scroll up and down to see what's other the other tracks. If there's something on a parallel track (like music) you sometimes can't delete-and-fill-gap.
But, if there is nothing on any other tracks, go to timeline mode, double-click on the gap between clips and press your Delete key. That should ripple the clips back together.

  • Audio in scene on timeline

I dragged a scene from the browser/list of scenes into the timeline and for some reason the audio came with it. (It's for a music video and I have the audio on the bottom of the timeline uploaded and locked.)
How do I get rid of the audio in that scene? It's probably simple but I can't figure out how to do it! And why did it happen in the first place?

    J S Langham wrote:
If you're hearing audio when you play that clip in the timeline then there must be audio there. If you can't see it I can only assume that in the process of dragging the clip to the timeline you've scrolled your audio tracks off out of sight. How many audio tracks can you actually see? If you open the audio mixer and hit play the level meters will show you which tracks have audio on, and if you hold the mouse cursor over the audio tracks and scroll up and down you should see your clip's audio.
Okay, I opened the audio mixer and just turned the audio all the way down and I don't hear that scene's personal audio anymore in the video. Is that good or should I actually "delete" it. How would I actually delete it altogether?
command+L doesn't make anything 'appear'. It unlinks the audio and video enabling you to delete the audio without deleting the video too.
I still don't understand that statement. It just does not make sense to me.

  • FCPX Playback head slow in timeline? Using Proxies.

Im editing 5k footage shot on the Red Epic.  I have a interview laid out in my timeline (or project) and I am going through and setting my "IN" and "OUT" marks and cutting using "APPLE-X".  Also using "J" on keyboard to rewind to certain points where I want to mark my "IN" points.  The footage runs great until I start cutting frequently.  My playhead starts to be slower than the actual video playing back. So when I make my "IN" and "OUTS"  and then cut, my edit is about 6 or 7 frames off.  It seems as if the playhead is lagging or it is slowed.  Every clip is converted to the 1080 proxies.  I am not mixing footage formats.  Im editing with the proxy setting enabled.  I am cutting from a GTECH Firewire 800 Drive.   Here are my computer specs:
    MAC PRO:
    MAC OS X 10.6.8
    Processor: 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    GFX: ATI Radeon HD 5870
    Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6
Please let me know if you can help me.
    Thanks

be sure there isn't anything else accessing your drive....file downloads....email auto checking...etc.
try seeing if the behaviour changes by alternating the preferences for playback, best performance vs high quality.
it's hard to understand why this would be an issue with proxy footage. enable the checkbox to warn you when drop frames occur. just to see...
does this only happen when editing 5k footage or can you reproduce it with other footage?
is it a fast 7200 rpm disk? might it be too full?
because you're using proxies, it sounds like something is slowing the hard drive down such that it's not accessing fast enough.

  • FCPX project turned grey. Timeline duration reads 00:00

When I play the project from the project library, despite the timeline reading the duration is 00:00 I see all of the footage and the cuts, but I hear no audio. I tried trashing my layouts, my prefernces, repairing my disks, and copying the project but nothing is working. I know the project still has to be there, otherwise it wouldn't play. I am using Fincal Cut 10.0.4 Any advice?

When I open the project in the timeline, there are no files and the whole box is gray.
Maybe there are some spceific preferneces I have to trash that I haven't? The only way I can ever see any part of the project is if I hit play from the project library.
    Thanks!

  • Help! messed up renders in timeline

(I'm reposting because no one has yet responded and I'm on a deadline...)
I'm having a strange problem with FCP 6.0.3 : Footage looks fine in the timeline during editing but, after a render of "green" preview clips, the rendered clips show the wrong parts (i.e. FCP seems confused about the timecode). If I un-render those clips, the footage is okay again.
My timeline is DVCProHD but mixes footage of various formats. The problems appear to be only in non-DVCProHD footage that needs to be rendered (i.e. DV, HDV, and Apple Intermediate Codec). Also, when I pasted part of an older sequence into my new timelines, some clips are displaying in the wrong aspect ratio, and FCP has added small gaps to other parts of the timeline (i.e missing frames).
    Can anyone help??
I thought it may be corrupt preferences, so I ran FCP Rescue 6, but no luck.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Michael.
Compiling this list, I realize I may be going for a new record for mixing formats -- live action HD and DV plus various types of screen capture footage. I have been scaling all the footage up to the sequence size.
If you have a solution for re-compressing the problem footage into a high quality format (that would not lose image quality), please let me know codec and software so I can run more tests.
    My sequence settings are:
    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame size: 960x720
    Compressor: DVCProHD 720p60
    Pixel aspect: HD (960x720)

Clips are stored on external G-RAIDs. It seems many of the problem clips are actually on a different G-RAID than the other footage (could that make a difference?). However, other media stored on this drive (DVCProHD and AVI format) renders correctly.

  • Sync problems using H.264 video in FCE timeline...please help!!!!

Okay. I'm reposting this question to see if anyone can help.
I'm shooting on a Panasonic HDC-HS700 and it's working fine. I use Aunsoft MTS Converter to convert to H.264 so that I can edit my footage in Final Cut Express. When I play back in the composer window, everything looks fine. BUT when I start putting clips in the timeline, the audio and video all out of sync and wacky. I will cut a clip in the composer but when I play it in the timeline the heads and tails are cut a few frames differently and the audio and video is out of sync. So basically, it's all fine in the composer but all messed up in the timeline.
What can I do to fix this? Should I try converting to a different format? Is this something that would not be a problem in Final Cut Pro??? Please give me any suggestions! I can also provide more information if that would help.

    Hi -
What is the source footage from the camera?
If it is HD, then it needs to be converted to Apple Intermediate Codec at 29.97 FPS. The audio needs to be converted to 48Khz AIFF.
An excellent free convertor is MPEG Streamclip, which is available at
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
H.264 is a acquisition and delivery codec, it is not suitable for editing in any past or current iteration of FCE or FCP. Attempting to edit in H.264 results in the problems you are currently experiencing - and many, many more.

Yes. Pick any shape and size you want under 4K. Frame rates are fixed to video standards.

  • Auto Adding Chapter Markers in FCPX?

Is there a way to easily add chapter markers per edit in FCPX?  I have a timeline of over 100 clips and I'd like to add a chapter marker at the very beginning of each new clip.
I've seen this question asked on the internet a few times but they were all from posts dating at least 2 years old...
    Any help is appreciated!

I think you will probably have to do it manually.
You can speed it up a bit by hitting the down arrow to jump to the next clip, press M, double-click the standard marker that appears and select "Chapter" from the contextual menu.
Alternatively you could press M twice which will open a window allowing you to click on the third icon which is a chapter marker.

  • Timeline Best Practices?

I am fairly new to flash and I have been trying to make a product demo. Basically I want some text to fade in and then some pictures to show up one by one and then disappear and then some new text fades in etc. This is to talk about a product and show various parts of it as the text on the screen is discussing those parts of the product.
My question is what the preferred way of doing this is. Here are the options I can think of.
Approach 1) Put all animation in the main timeline. All text tweens take place on frames in the main timeline.
Approach 2) Put the text fade-in tweens in a movie clip and put that on the main timeline.
I have tried both these approaches but neither one has been working for me for the following reason.
Approach 1) Makes timeline very long and unwieldy. If one thing changes, it shifts everything over and messes up my whole timeline. Hard to manage.
Approach 2) If I have a stop(); on the main timeline, my animation stops in mid fade. In cases where I don't have a stop, I can't figure out how to do a series of objects fading in one after another. Is there a way to check if a movieclip has finished and only go to the next frame if it has finished? How do I get a series of clips to play one after another when I am running them as seperate movieclips off the main timeline.
Thanks in advance for your help. This newbie has already spent hours working on this and greatly appreciates your help.

So what is the best way to create a demo of the sort that I am talking about? With movieclips instead of putting everything in the main timeline?
It sounds like I need it like this:
Frame 1 place movieclip1 (at end of movieclip send to frame 3 in main timeline)
Frame 2 stop(); (because I want it finish playing the movie clip before it reaches the next frame)
Frame 3 remove movieclip1 and place movieclip2 which will start tweening in
    Frame 4 stop();
    etc...
Assuming I used this approach, how do I tell the movieclip to advance to the frame 3 in the main timeline when it finishes?
Also, I have used actionscript before but most of the flash books I have read talk about using tweening in the timeline so I was trying that. How would I do it via actionscript? Is there a way to find out if a tween is done to know whether to start the next tween? Something like
    if (tween1.done == true) then {
    //run tween 2

  • Re-Merge Bogus Scene Groups Created by Auto-Analyzer

Posted originally at Photoshop Elements forum because I didn't see a separate forum for the Organizer. Someone there suggested I repost here.
So I've now read the postings about disabling the automatic running of the deadly Auto-Analyzer feature--48 hours too late. I'm hoping against hope that Adobe now has some fix to re-merge the bogus scene groups created by this "feature" without re-importing the master clips silently assaulted throughout my 80 hour video library. I've spent days tagging clips only to notice this evening that a growing number had been carved up into meaningless "scenes". The child scenes seem to carry the tags and date attributes of the master clip at the time of the "analysis", but for clips not yet fully tagged, care must be taken to fully expand the groups before tagging, and the proliferation of meaningless groups with hanging one second "scenes" is not the standard I'd hoped to maintain in this catalog.
Please, someone tell me it is now possible to undo the mess of Scene Groups created by Auto-Analyzer without reimporting and retagging clips.
Also, although I've now disabled background running of Auto-Analyser, how do I remove it from the menus and, goodness gracious, from any keyboard shortcut that might inadvertantly run it? I want it to go away forever and never come back.
    Thanks!
    -Whit

Thanks, Steve. It is clean in the sense that there is no data loss and that when editing in Premier I can take the extra step of untrimming such clips. Even if working in Premier, I still think it would be much cleaner if one could simply undo all of this from the Organizer and not have to worry about it when creating a new project. My main issue is that I'm really trying to use the Organizer itself as a bit of a friendly front-end to enable my family to peruse a decades-long video library, and all these meangingless scene groups would have really confused my novice users.
I'm good now. Had not gotten too far in tagging so I set the defaults to not run Auto-Analyzer and started over. Was considerably faster this go-around because I used DVMP Pro to change the modified date of each clip to reflect the timecode value for the first frame -- so this time everything but the really old analog 8 mm stuff came in with clean, detailed dates.
Thanks again for your help, Steve.

Put a stop() command at the end of the scene 1 timeline if you wish to stop there.  If you wish to loop use a gotoAndPlay(1) (or whatever frame suits it)
