FCPX timeline woes

My problem with FCPX beacball of death in the timeline is due to audio waveform and thumbnails on the clips.
When i right click to open clip in the timeline, and press the spacebar to play, is when i get the beachball.
Not until all the thumbnails and the audio wave forms show up, then it will play. I believe that FCPX 10.1 has
a thumbnail bug that is slowing down the timeline or clip bin. When i change the clips to filmstrip view in the
clip bin and timeline, everything run fast. How i figured this out, was when i tried to quit it was telling me that
background task is runing. If i click on the background tasks window, it show rendering audio waveform.
Tried on diferent projects with no other libraries as not to load all the files, and still take the time to render
the waveforms, even though i have audio waveforms box uncheck when i import my clips.
The longer the clips, the longer it takes to render waveforms.
Hpoefully apple will look into this,
Im currently running a macbookpro late 2013 retina with 2.3 Ghz i7 and 16 gm ram with 512 ssd internal HD
and a G Force 2T external drive with lacie esata to thunderbolt hub.

Yes, I do send them feedback, but I don't feel like Apple listens to my feedback about FCPX when I send it to them.  If Apple actually looks at these communities they might actually see everyone's rants and the mess they made with FCPX.

  • Has Apple added the ability to put Motion docs in a FCPX timeline yet?

Much of my workflow depends on editing Motion Documents in a FCP7 timeline.  I know about the ability to save a Motion doc as a template, but I haven't found a way to edit the Motion doc once it's in the FCPX timeline outside of rigs, etc.  I need to be able to green screen people into my Motion documents weekly, and green screening through rigs, positioning them in 3D, rendering each individual cut from FCPX to a mov file to a DropZone, and then more editing after that.... it gets complicated and cumbersome.  All that I really need is to choose a Motion Doc in a FCPX timeline and open it in Motion as needed - maybe when you right click the doc you see a nice big "Open in Motion" graphic or something - the fact that you can place a Motion file in the timeline makes me think they're not too far from this.  Is this a planned addition?

    Not a current feature.
"Is this a planned addition?" Apple rarely makes promises of future features publicly. Anyone who would know privately wouldn't be allowed to reveal anything here.

  • Can I edit a rough cut in the FCPX timeline  and export without compression

    Hi,
I know this probably is a simple question for those in the know, I have some footage shot on a Canon 5D Mark 2 and I want to bring it into the FCPX timeline without transcoding ie leaving it in its native file format H264 then clean it up and export it out of FCPX without any compression leaving it as I found it, I need to give this footage to another editor and I don't want him to see all my bad camera moves just the diamonds in the rough
Appreciate if anyone could answer this?

HI Tom, thanks for the reply, I was afraid of that, I did not know you could do limited trimming in the QT PLayer, this might just help me out
    Regards
    Mark

  • Perfect audio in FCPX timeline, distorted after export to QuickTime mov

Anyone experiencing distorted audio with a QuickTime movie file exported from Final Cut Pro X? The audio sounds great in the timeline, but muffled and distorted after exporting it. Here's the kicker, I took that same file and opened it using QuickTime 7 and the audio is fine. I took that same file and converted it to a WMV file using Flip Player, and the audio is fine. So it would seem that the problem is the newest version of QuickTime (v10.4). If any of you have come to a similar conclusion, is there a way to remedy this? It's problematic because when I upload the file to YouTube, the distortion is present. Thanks in advance to everyone who can assist with this.
    MY SYSTEM:
    MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), 2.8GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM
    OSX Yosemite 10.10.2
    FCPX v10.1.4
    QuickTime v10.4

    Hi Al,
Here are the steps I use to export:
From the File menu, I select 'Share' and select 'Master File'
In the pop-up dialog box I click on 'Settings' and select 'H264' as the CODEC
I open the rendered file with QuickTime Player and the audio is distorted.
I open the rendered file with QuickTime Player 7 and the audio is fine
I convert the exported file to a WMV file using Pro version of Flip Player. The audio in the resulting file is fine.
I'm no expert but this would on the outset appear to be a problem with QuickTime v10.4.  I can't seem to find a way to resolve this. Thank you for your assistance.
FYI - the audio file for the project is pulled in to FCPX as an mp3 directly from the iTunes library via the 'Music and Sound' browser.

  • No Audio In FCPX Timeline, But It's In The Clip Window

I grabbed some video with my iPhone and imported it into FCPX. I'm ready to start editing, so I drag the clip into the timeline -- but there's no audio. Previewing the clip in the Clip window/area pays the audio just fine -- but I get nothing in the Timeline. I see the waveform, I see the meter moving like it should -- but no audio.
    What am I doing wrong?

Luis!  Hi, it's me again...the person with the conversion issues?  Anyway, that has been solved thankfully.  My new problem is what has been mentioned in this thread.  Audio in Clip Viewer but not when dropped in the Timeline.  I attempted the fixes suggested in this thread but I'm using FCP Version 4.0.1 (old, I know) and the steps given aren't the same.  The first part of my project has audio in the Timeline...I'm guessing I clicked or unchecked something...I've looked everywhere and can't figure it out.  Even pulled out the manual!  Let me know if you have any suggestions and thank you in advance!
I have not used older versions in a while, but I guess you may have disconnected the little "a1" from the big "A1" as seen in the image below. Drag to reconnect them. If this is not it, then I can only suggest you ask this in the Final Cut Studio forum (or Final Cut Express forum - I imagine that is what you are using).

  • FCPX TIMELINE AND AUDIO PROBLEMS

The first clip I insert into the timeline always has a separate audio line and collapsing it into the main line is fruitless.   Why is this so and is there a way of rectifying that?
A second problem is audio distortion.   I keep getting distorted audio and can't rectify that either.   Have reinstalled FCPX a couple of times to se if that succeeds but it doesn't.   Will anyone help with these mysteries please?

AAre you using the open in timeline function? That's not how you put a clip into a project.
DO the meters show the audio in the red? Have you pulled down the level line on the clip in the timeline?

  • FCPX Timeline acts locked

I'm just learning FCPX, but edited on FCP5 or so.  Previously, I dragged some clips into a timeline. Now I can't select clips in that timeline, or drag clips into that timeline or a new timeline. Both toimelines are surrounded by a white border, no yellow selection borders appear.  Also, to the top left of the old timeline, there's a symbol which looks like sound coming from a speaker, with an exclamation mark. What's going on? Your help is appreciated!

You people are amazing -- so generous. I am attaching the screenshot, but I also solved the problem -- and generated a new one. Okay, it seems that when the "project library" is open, the white border appears and the timelines are locked. When I double-klicked any given timeline, they get bigger, show the clip names, and are usable. But when I then selected one clip and dragged it in, everything in the event came in.
Clearly, I need t learn to use FCPX from top to bottom so I don't keep bothering anyone. Is there a good book, tuitorial, manual or anything? The help menu gives very little.

  • How to bring/create/insert a slug in a fcpx timeline ?

I'm not finding a command or option for it.....like I have a layer in timeline and want to insert a slug layer beneath it....I just drag a clip in the lower layer and with position tool drag it and this creates a slug but is there a direct way to create it......?
One more observation is also weird that sometime this dragging clip creates a slug, sometimes it just drags and shifts without creating a slug ..what is the basic concept that I'm missing.....?

If you use the Position tool (shortcut is "P") the magnetic functions are turned off and a gap clip is left.
If you use the Arrow tool (shortcut is "A") the magnetic functions are turned on and clips just shift.

  • Weird glitch in FCPX timeline

So, I'm editing normally - when things start to disappear in the timeline while the preview video screen (top right) goes black! I got that little black icon you can see - which I dont know what it means.
Can anyone make anything of this....

I kept getting this little gap clip every time I made a particular video clip + two audio clips into a compound clip. The little gap clip would wedge itself in there at the end of the clip. I double and triple checked that there was no gap when the clips were broken apart, and yet every time I compounded them, the little gap clip would appear.
The only solution was not to go with the compound option for that particular video + two audio clips.

  • FCPX Timeline Glitch (10.1.1)

Works fine on my non-retina 2012 Macbook Pro, but my new Retina causes this to happen
    http://youtu.be/XwlmybgITeo

Interesting. I've actually been working on a 2 hour (6 EXDCAMs HD 50 Mb/s) MultiCam Clip synced 32 bit .Wav audio of a Rock Band performance and have not had any issues. I have multicam clips of each song made into compound clips, many transitions and effects and titles in 28 projects exported 3 different ways each. The Library now has grown to be over 190 GB in size.
Since I am done with this project -but  b4 I delete all except the Master Files - I have been on the FCP X forum trying to re create some of the issues I am reading about. I mean I have been abusing this machine inside this Library, copying things here, alying effect on top of effects, working with color in ways no sane human would - and I can not get this thing to Hiccup except in 2 cases: (1)  I created a new custom name in the inspector for a clip that has been edited. When I go in and type info in that new "category {I named Editor} 9 times out of 10 I will get a beach ball that will not quit until I force quit. It doesn't matter if I do this right after starting FCP or after editing for a couple of hours - (2) when I preview each effect by putting the skimmer on the effect while still in the Effects browse - I am mean each and every effect - all of them one right after another, then my 16 gigs of ram become depleted and everything freezes.
I have FCP 7 Studio installed on the same machine along with Perian and all kinds of crap I brought over from my old computer. For the life of me I cannot make FCP X act up except in the 2 ways I said - one of which is what anyone would call extreme.
So I am interested - what do you think is happening in your case? Under what conditions exactly is it occuring? What is your hardware/software profile - I understand that you have been using FCP for over a year. You must have some ideas what is happening?

  • FCPX Timeline ending before video does

Ok, I don't know a lot about Final Cut Pro X. I have version 10.0.5. But when I finished my project that I was working on I got this:
When I make it a compound clip to watch it...It dosen't show the shaded part in the clip.
I need to meet a deadline so if somone could get back to me ASAP that would be great.
    thanks

    sorry here's the screen shot

  • Need to open .fcp  project from FCP7 in FCPX 10.0.3. How can I achieve this without exporting the original from FCP7 to a QT movie? I need the original timeline in FCPX.

I have been working on a scholarship short film for a couple of months now (am a senior in high school) and have been using my school's Mac Pros with OSX 10.7 and FCP7 to edit it. Yesterday I bought a Macbook Pro and got FCPX, and am having trouble moving everything over (the computers at school are going to be wiped for the end of the year soon and I must continue to edit it on my MacBook). The project file "MattsShort.fcp" from FCP7 at school isn't even being recognized as a project file by the newest version of FCPX, so obviously I cannot open it and get to work connecting the media. How can I open this file in FCPX? Excluding exporting the project at school to a quicktime movie, I need to be able to further edit the timeline.

Cool, thanks! I was able to import the timeline into FCPX but all of the files are offline, even though I imported the same exact clips that were in the original FCP7 project, into the same 'event' that I have the new FCPX timeline in. I believe the problem lies in that FCPX imported the clips and named them after the date and time they were created, rather than the "Clip #XXX" that FCP7 assigned to the timeline. Does this sound correct? And if so, is the only way to solve this problem to go back to FCP7 and rename all of the clips assigned to the timeline to the names FCPX gave them? I really hope there is a simpler solution but given all of the work it takes to even import a FCP7 project into FCPX, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the only solution.
A little more info: When I use 7toX to convert the XML file, it says that my media will be offline.
EDIT: I just watched a youtube video that explained that 7toX brings over the required media.....why isn't it doing that for me? I am on two different computers if I hadn't already said.

  • Is it possible to export part of the FCPX Project from timeline

Is it possible to export a selection from the FCPX timeline or do I have to export the entire project and then edit it in another program.

Yes - but you don't mention the billion ways in which FCP X makes FCP 7 totally obsolete.
    Andy
I didn't think it was relevant to the thread.
I'm simply encouraging the return of a few features that were left on the cutting room floor - no harm in that.
I O markers and chapter markers are a few of them and routinely a topic of discussion. It's not just me.
For the record I'm a big Fan of FCPX. It has many of the features that I said, for years,  should be added to FCP7 -  and I took a lot of heat over the years for pointing out the deficiencies in FCP7.
When a new editor comes to the forum and asks "why can't i do this really simple thing" , I think it's better to acknowledge his observation and encourage constructive feedback to Apple rather than implying that he was stupid for knot figuring out a convoluted work-around for something that should exist in the program.
If your post had started with "here's a work around…." rather than " takes seconds…"
and you had finished with "…hopefully we'll see I O markers in a future update…"
Rather than "…Ctrl+Zs to get back to previous state." you never would have heard a peep from me.
I just find the apologist mentality difficult to ignore. No offense intended.
    best regards,
    g
PS - I also think "totally obsolete" is a bit of a stretch.

  • Removing between and in and out point in the timeline

I don't usually post on forums but this has got me quite perplexed:
How do you remove a chunk of media between and in and out point in the FCPX timeline?
It's can't be as hard as it seems to do this task that you have to do all the time. I have a 2 hour 3 camera shoot and I want to remove quite a few 2, 3 minute chucks all through the show. I can't find any way to easily remove these chunks. I know there's no real in and out point in the FCPX timeline anymore but there HAS to be some way to easily remove all the video and audio between two points !!!
I feel really dumb! The answer can't be to make a compound clip as that sure is a pain just to remove something from the timeline. And to blade each individual track means I have to blade at least 8 or 12 things just to remove it!
I have to be missing something. Thanks for any input.

    Thanks Tom.
I'll have between 3 and 6 layers at any point. I've tried command B but the problem with that is it only puts a cut on the primary storyline. It will cut more than that if I select all the layers. By doing that it's like a 5 or 6 step process to delete chunks of media in the timeline. I can't believe there isn't an easier way than that.
But what makes it worse as I have a long piece of audio only media that  is for the whole show. Its a connected clip to the primary storyline. when making edits with command B and then deleting what is between the edits this main audio gets deleted from the edit forward. IT's like this audio becomes a connected clip right after the edit when command B is made. it looks connected to the next clip after the command B but it deletes when I delete the chunk between the command B.
This is so silly that I can't easily delete media from the timeline in this way. It's such a simple thing!

  • FCPX/Motion - creating a circle with alpha channel?

This film has a lot of scientific apparatus.  I need to be able to circle certain elements as they are described/discussed.  I crudely made myself a red circle on black background in Pages, exported out as a PDF, then tried to find a composite mode in FCPX that would get rid of the black.  The closest I got was a sort of semi-transparent red circle.
I'm wondering what the easiest way to create a red circle (red opaque, background transparent) might be, that I can drop onto an FCPX timeline and manipulate?
If I have to use Motion, I want to be able to just create the circle there.  I don't want to work on the sequences in Motion (too much as yet unpredictable about the sequences).  I want to do everything in FCPX if I can (other than maybe constructing the circle).
    All ears,
    Ben

    Aha!
There it is!  Tra-la.  Right in FCPX.  Perfect.  Thank you T.  And Andy, I was looking at Ripple Training the other day ... so will go back and check out some more possibilities.
Hey guys, what I'd love to find:  Soft Wipes ... the kind that allows me to set a point and have the wipe either right, left, top, bottom, or radial even, with really controllable feathering.  I've been looking for a set ever since I can no longer use that wonderful plug-in I was using in FCP7 (FXScript DVE's by CGM?)  And haven't found anything.
I would so love to be able to create controlled dissolves, where one image metamorphoses into the next ...
That, and Joe's Filters - the amazing 'Joe's Colour Glow' filter ... that allowed you to pump and bloom the whites.  Joe has retired I believe, from making filters.  The nice thing about his Colour Glow was that there was no yellow in it, no alternative 'colour', only the white ... playing with it allowed me make sequences, when required, look very very 'clean' ... the whites were so super white.  I can't find anything in FCPX that does this.  The 'Bloom' I think allows me to play a bit with the whites, but it then adds a yellowish tint that I can't get rid of.
There, two little wish list thingies I've been wanting to find for a long time.  Soft Wipes, and Joe's Colour Glow filter.
