FCPX to Compressor 4.1 to WMV (using Flip4Mac) - Audio Popping Noise

This week I exported WMVs from FCPX 10.1.3 via Compressor 4.1.
A strange 'popping noise' appeared in the final exported files that was not present in the original source clips in FCPX.
I ran through every conceivable AV quality setting in the Windows Media Quicktime Export Components to isolate the problem but to no avail.
To humour myself I used a free online WMV conversion tool which produced a WMV that didn't have the audio popping noise.
Eventually I contacted Telestream/Flip4Mac and asked if anyone else had reported the issue.
They said they had started to receive reports of similar problems occuring when exporting to WMV from Compressor.
THE SOLUTION:
Export a ProRes MOV from FCPX via Compressor
Open that MOV in Flip Player and select Export > Format > Windows Media

This is what I see.

I was working on iMovie. I lost all of my sound from my events that imported from my Panasonic HDD. Everything was ok until I imported a video which was originally WMV and I imported it using Flip4Mac. What are my options.

  • FCP X: Can I export .wmv using Compressor without Flip4mac

Hi all, I need to export a movie as a .wmv and can't purchase the full version of Flip4mac. I do have Compressor 4.0.7 though. Is there a way I can export the file as a .wmv using only Compressor? I have exported the movie as an mp4 and it is 464.4MB. All the free online converters say the file is too big to convert unless I purchase the option to. I am fairly new to all of this so I appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

If you have Flip4Mac you can make a preset in Compressor. Then you can export using that directly from FCPX, but yes, you need Flip4Mac.

  • Using FCPx and Compressor dvd stutters

Using FCPx and Compressor I have put a 2 minute film on a dvd but when I play the dvd it stutters irregularly. I have tried lots of different settings and need HD quality. Can anyone help please? Thanks Helen

Are you putting a ProRes file on a standard DVD? You can't play it back. The DVD disc his nowhere near the through put needed to support high data rate media. The DVD format is very heavily compressed to allow proper play back, which that can be managed off the disc.

  • FCPX -- ProRessHQ -- Compressor 4 -- Blu-ray .264 of 1.69GB

    Hi,
When I export a 2 hour and 16min movie from FCPX to Compressor 4 and convert it to a Blu-ray .264 file I'll end up with a file of 1.69GB. This is not normal. I used the default settings to create a Blu-ray file.
When I export a 2 hour and 16min movie from FCPX to Compressor 4 and convert it to a ProRess HQ file I'll end up with a file of 191GB. This is normal.
But when I convert this ProRess HQ file to a Blu-ray file .264 I'll end up again with a file of 1.69GB. This is not normal.
    What am I doing wrong?
Is the movie to long for a Blu-ray and is Compressor confused because it's more than 2 hours?
When I convert the same ProRess HQ file to m2v (dvd) I'll end up with a file of 3,79GB. Tat's ok. No problem with that one.
For the Blu-ray file .264 I use the default setting from Compressor 4.
    Thanks for helping me out...

    SOLVED
Ok, this is my workflow. I hope it works also for you...
    PS : It also solve my other problem : FCPX --> ProRessHQ --> Compressor 4 --> Blu-ray .264 of 1.69GB
    Step 1 : Export to ProRes422HQ
Export your project to a ProRes422HQ .mov file. You can do this also via Compressor. This still works.
    Step 2 : Download x264
Download the x264 program via this link : http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/x264/binaries/macosx-x86-64/
This program is free but not that easy to use. Took me some time to find (via 'The Internet') the correct syntax so that Adobe Encore CS5.5 and Toast 11 accepted the file without transcoding or re-encoding the generated .264 file.
Step 3 : Encoding the .mov file to a.264 file using x264
Use these commands to generate the .264 file. This is for a 25p file. But you can also use x264 for 24p/30p/... movies. You only have to change the --fps and --keyint options. You can also play with the bitrates.
    Pass 1 :
    x264-r2453-ea0ca51 --bitrate 22000 --fake-interlaced --tune film --bluray-compat --fps 25 --force-cfr --bframes 3 --ref 4 --muxer raw --no-weightb --weightp 0 --b-pyramid none --vbv-maxrate 22000 --vbv-bufsize 22000 --level 4.1 --profile high --keyint 25 --min-keyint 1 --slices 4 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 --pass 1 -oOutPutFile.264 --input-res 1920x1080 InputFile_ProRes422HQ.mov
    Pass 2 :
    x264-r2453-ea0ca51 --bitrate 22000 --fake-interlaced --tune film --bluray-compat --fps 25 --force-cfr --bframes 3 --ref 4 --muxer raw --no-weightb --weightp 0 --b-pyramid none --vbv-maxrate 22000 --vbv-bufsize 22000 --level 4.1 --profile high --keyint 25 --min-keyint 1 --slices 4 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 --pass 2 -oOutPutFile.264 --input-res 1920x1080 InputFile_ProRes422HQ.mov
PS: There is also another option, for beter results, I'm testing for the moment and that is this one : --preset very slow.
Step 4 : Create the .ac3 audio file via Compressor
Import the ProRes422HQ file into Compressor and create only the ac3 audio file.
Step 5 : Import the .264 and .ac3 file into Toast or Adobe Encore.
If al goes well, Adobe Encore doesn't need to transcode the .264 file.
And in Toast you set via the custom option that no re-encoding is needed.
Step 6 : Burn and enjoy...
I hope this workflow works for all of you...
If not, we need to find out what's wrong...

  • Minimum Macbook Pro for FCPx and Compressor

I do most of my video work on an 3.4 Ghz i7, 16GB iMac, but I'd like to be able to use a Macbook Pro, when traveling or for handing off tasks to a secondary machine.   My current Macbook is looking like it's on its last legs so the time is arriving to replace it with an upgrade.
So my question is, what is the minimum configuration for a Macbook Pro and still have it be usable with FCPx and Compressor? I'm thinking the base model 15" is probably enough or an upgraded 13".  They end up at about the same money.

Which is what I did with my iMac -- it was the maximum horsepower I could buy at the time.  I always use proxy media just for the speed of editing.  With the Macbook Pro it will never be my main tool, just a fallback, a traveling machine, or a place for handling Compressor tasks when I'm busy with something else.
I will check out the FCPx marketing info as I didn't think to look there.  Usually minimum requirements translate out as "barely workable configuration".

  • Using flip4mac to create WMV only 29s of a 10 m clip gets encoded

When using flip4mac to create  an WMV file compressor only encodes 29seconds of a 10 minute clip.  The same thing happens when I use MPEG Streamclip. I opened FCP to see if there was a break between the clips at the 29s position and I cannot see one.  I am using the MOV file that FCP exported, as the source.
I first ran into this issue using MPEG Streamclip, so I bought the Flip4Mac HD and the same thing happens. The preview pane displays the full projet., The In/Out display correctly. duration is displayed as 10m 16f, which is correct, but the finished product is only 29s.
I have to encode to WMV b/c the company is windows based and most PCs do not have the proper codecs for MOV.

H.264 QT is compatible with most all the Windows video player apps I've tested it with.
Compressor 4 is major buggy.  In fact, my Flip4Mac stuff doesn't even show up, and I've been using it for years now.  Hoping for a huge bug update soon.

  • Anyone have experience with using Flip4Mac with Compressor?

I am suddenly getting a strange QT error. I just upgraded my QT version to the latest one, 7.4.5 and now I can't encode anything using Flip4Mac's WMV encoder through Compressor. Everything was working just fine before I did the upgrade, but now whenever I try to use Compressor to export to a WMV file, I get an error that reads "QuickTime Error: -2002"
It's like the codec isn't even installed or something, because the error is instant. It's not like it gets going and then quits out in the middle.
I've tried a full clean re-install of Compressor, QuickTime and Flip4Mac and I still get this error. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

I would recommend downgrading to QuickTime 7.3.1, which is currently the most stable version of QuickTime for Final Cut Studio 2.0.2.
    - QuickTime 7.3.1 for Leopard
    - QuickTime 7.3.1 for Tiger
    - QuickTime 7.3.1 for Panther

  • Export from FCPX to Compressor 4 Failed - Quick time Error:-50

    Hi all,
Having some trouble exporting a large video (1080p, about 5 gb) after using the Share>send to compressor option.  Footage was shot with a Canon Ti3, and exported fine by itself to an .mov, but when sent to compressor I get the above error.
I have so far done the following:
trashed FCPX and Compressor 4 prefs
    checked for updates
deleted the projects render files and rerendered
    Any ideas?  Screen shot below.
    Jimmy

There have been many reports of QT- 50 errors on export at FCPX forum.
This may sound as though I'm changing the subject, but why not bring your exported movie into Compressor? It's always been a more reliable workflow than Send-to Compressor going back to the FCS days.
If you are committed to the Send workflow,  try creating a new project and copy and paste from the old project to the new.

  • No optical flow going from FCPX to Compressor

Using Compressor 4.1.3 and FCPX 10.1.4. When I export a project from FCPX to Compressor, and the project has some clips with Optical Flow, Compressor does not render those clips using Optical Flow. Using "Apple Devices HD (Best Quality)" setting.
I searched for similar questions, both here and in the FCPX forum, and didn't find any similar questions, which leads me to believe that either I don't know how to search properly, or I must be missing something obvious.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Your experience matches what others have reported. Alternatively you could export a master file and bring that into Compressor to apply your settings. In other words, skip the Send to Compressor workflow altogether. Or export directly with ATV settings from FCP X

  • Trying to convert to wmv using "share"

i'm trying to convert avi files in i movie to wmv using share.
I have limited success e.g have a 30 second clip which when converted using share comes out edited to 15 secs!
    Anyone got any ideas?
If not any free avi to wmv converters around?
    Thanks!

    Hi John,
I've got to ask. Why are you bothering to convert to WMV? What's wrong with Quicktime? If your target computer is a Windoze PC you can install Quicktime on it.
iMovie is not a file converting program and does not like AVI at the best of times. Convert your AVI containers to either DV or MOV first then import them to iMovie if you must. However, you may find you lose the audio when you convert the AVI files depending on how they were created. If so, you may need a more advanced converter like Visual Hub, but it's not free. It costs $25 (US). I have it and it rocks!
Here's a link to a free converter 'ffmpegX'.
    http://ffmpegx.com/download.html
You can aslo try Mpeg Streamclip, but I don't know if it will convert to WMV.

  • FCPX-to-Compressor V4 performance question (which is better?)

For a 15-minute movie, I go directly FILE=>SEND TO COMPRESSOR and it takes about 4-5 hours to produce a MP2 file for DVD.   That's grinding four 3GHZ processors to 100%.
Alternatively, if I FILE=>SHARE=>MASTER FILE  it takes about 10 minutes to create the .MOV file.   If I then input this intermediate .MOV file directly into COMPRESSOR, I can create the MP2 file in about 10 minutes.
So my question is:  If I create the intermediate .MOV file, will I lose some quality instead of going directly from FCPX to COMPRESSOR?
    Thanks for your thoughts
    -Dale

It's theoretically a cleaner encode going directly from FCP to Compressor. Each frame is called up from FCP from the original media, processed and then encoded. The original file is processed in fully uncompressed, 32-bit float format. It's very clean but it requires the OS to basically switch back and forth between the two applications frame by frame. It's great, but it's very slow. The fact is with near lossless codecs like ProRes the difference between the two methods is not discernible without frame by frame comparison. If you've got all weekend to encode your movie you may as well go ahead and do it. Personally I like having a master file anyway, so if I ever need to make different versions in different formats, it's much easier to go just go back to the master file and re-encode from there than to have to go back to FCP to encode again. You'll probably find discussion about this going back a few years on the Final Cut Studio forum here or on the equivalent forum on Creative Cow and probably other places as well.

  • PAL DVD mit FCPX und Compressor 4

I have FCPX and compressor 4 installed on a new imac. I edited my firs project. 27 minutes of scuba diving. When I export the movie to DVD the quality of the pictures in the movie is poor. I made in compressor a preset in changing from NTSC to PAL and I changed to 16:9. The movie was then in toast only 800 MB and the quality is very poor. Can somebody tellmy how to make a PAL DVD in good quaity, 2-3 GB?How do I have to change the preset in compressor?
Thanks for your help. By the way I love FCPX!

Try making the Compressor quality two-pass VBR between 6.5 and 7.5. Or try one-pass CBR at 7.5. You don't have to export the whole movie, just pick a problem section and mark in and out points in the Compressor preview.

  • 1080p 50 footage to Blu ray appears to convert to either 1080p 25 or 720p 50 is Share FCPX  or Compressor

Has anyone been able to burn 1080p 50 footage to Blu ray, I can only seem to create a file of 1080p 25 or 720p 50 in either FCPX or Compressor 4 as the 50 option is greyed out in 1080p. As far as I can tell most blu ray players can handle AVCHD 1080p 50, even after the latest upgrades this still does not work. The footage is on the time line and project properties are correct.

    SteveMPYC wrote:

    wrong assumption.
'Disks' (BR/DVD) are completely different encoded than the stuff in your timeline.
To keep things simple, the rule is:
    length matters, not size.
A single-layer DVD with maximum quality settings fits ~60min of video.
And, due to standards, is always SDef.
Same disk fits ~20min of HDef in a sort of BluRay-standard = you can burn a BluRay-structure onto DVD-r ... not fully compatible, but for 'quick'n dirty'.
Same DVD-r fits only a minute as 'data' from your timeline, which probably is encoded in proRes = ~40GBs/h ......
forget size ........ think of hh:min:sec

  • Aren't FCPX and Compressor supposed to be able to export Apple ProRes 422 LT?  I just bought FCPX and Compressor and there seems to be no way to transcode HDV clips to Apple ProRes422 LT.  Before buying I read LACUG tutorial by R Taylor that says it can.

Tom is right. Codecs are shared software system-wide ("Core Video"). If you cannot find the option with any software (such as MPEG Streamclip), you won't find it in Compressor or FCPX either. The Quicktime ProRes codecs is part of the FCP menu > "Download Additional Content" you need to make after install FCPX (or Compressor.) These "pro video" codecs are part of all "ProApp" licenses for video related software from Apple (QT7Pro, Motion, Compressor, Final Cut, etc....) [you can also download them here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1396]
Most articles/tutorials you read by "long time" users are apt to assume the reader has been working with pro-video on Macs since the days of disk installs (like they have). In those days, the installation of those codecs wasn't even really an option (well, it was if you did a custom install - but who *didn't* install all available codecs??), it was automatically installed with the main software. Since the "App Store" venue... things have changed somewhat.
