FCPX will is capturing entire tape footage with import

Need some help please. I import as I have done on lots of other projects the footage from my consumer Sony HC9 (HDV) camera.
This time however FCPX is not capturing the last 7 mins on the tape. It seems to stop at 55:54:15 for some reason. The import goes to the end of tape and looks like it is working, but when I start editing I can see the last 7 mins or so of footage has not been captured. Tryed to do another capture in a new event> Same result! Any ideas why? Cheers

Bryan, seems very odd that the archiving method didn't work
Anyway my first suggestion would be to try capturing the last 7min of your tape using a manual method. You can do this by using QuickTime Player 10.0. Choose File - New Movie Recording and be sure to change your capture settings.
My second suggestion would be to try iMove. If nether of these work, then you can bet your bottom dollar that the cause is more likely to be the tape not FCP X.
Let me know who you go.

  • Batch capturing entire tape...recomended???

Is it a good idea to attempt to batch capture a tape in its entirety? I am having problems doing this...I do a lot of events that last often over 2 hours. Instead of capturing footage in clips, I just capture the entire tape. When I'm done with the project, I simply make the clips offline.
I'm in the process of reviving a project now, and one tape in it's entirety(55 min approx), captured OK, but I am having problems with another tape. I am getting a broken timecode error, when I don't see how this is possible...because I let the tape freely run. Also, under the logging info, the media ends before the tape ends, which means that is space left on the end of the tape without any timecode. Yet when I batch capture, it still goes to the end of the tape.....isn't a batch capture suppose to go by the clips media in and media out points?
    All help is greatly appreciated.

I do this often. There are two shools of thought on this method -
Capturing entire tapes allows one to scroll through non-linearly and make subclips. The advantage to subclips is that they are serachable and you can add comments. The downside to this method is that the files are large, and you may be capturing much more metarila than you need. I often do this when working on docs with very high shooting ratios. The most recent one had 190 tapes for a 1-hour program, which led us to use offline RT for our cutting format and then recapture for online.
Logging and capturing single clips fives you the advantage of starting out capturing only what you know you might use, you can input the logging info at the start, and will have several small clips that may be easier to manage. Since at some point you'll have to familiarize youself with the matreial anyway, you might as well do it at the logging stage.
Several factors can contribute to perceived TC breaks - reusing tapes, camera stops, shooting format (HDV, for instance, will show a TC break each time the camera stops). If you are capturing whole tapes, you might do well to let FCP create new clips on TC breaks and just let it roll. Make sure the TC format matches between your tape and settings (DF vs. NDF)
Regarding rolling off the end of the tape during capture, you might be very close to the end with the clip you are capturing. You might try lowering the post-roll value in the device control preset in your A/V settings.
    Hope this helps -

  • Capturing entire tape

Hi, I am trying to capture an entire tape, instead of doing it clip by clip. I go to Capture Now...and then hit play on my camera. It seems to capture everything. However, in FCP, it only has the first minute or so. BUT...when I go to Finder and into my actual scratch disk manually, and open that captured file, it plays the entire thing in Quicktime. Why is it only showing it as being a minute long in FCP?

    John:
If you play the QT file from your scratch disc and see the complete tape, it was captured ! By a chance, didn't you add some IN/OUT points by mistake in FCP?
Again, if your AT file is the complete tape, try just importing that file in your project and you must see the complete footage there.
Hope it helps ... and/or make sense !

  • Capture Entire Tape Of Clips

    Hi all,
Quick question: I used to use Sony's Vegas product before I saw the light and switched to the Mac. One thing that I really liked about the Vegas product was how it captured a tape ... it essentially broke the tape up into clips based on the timestamp/record button. It made going through a tape much easier.
Is there a way with FCE 4 to capture an entire tape, but have it broken into clips automatically?
    Thanks in advance.
    B.

Yes. I did this yesterday with FCE4.
The process can be found "Automatically Creating Subclips Using DV Start/Stop Detection (p. 283)" in the FCE4 electronic manual.

  • How to capture Vari Cam Footage with  PanasonicHD1200A

Hi there. Thanks to those people who answered my previous question about the Vari Cam codec. I hate to say I am still a little confused.
I should specifiy now that I am capturing footage from DVCPro tapes recorded on a Panonic Vari Cam (720p). The deck I am using is a panasonic HD1200A and I Have a AJA kona LS capture Card.
I want to edit for final output for PAL, so 720x576 (it will be 4:3 letterboxed 16:9) and a frame rate of 25.
So my question is which of Final Cut Pros many capture presets do I use. Do I need to downlaod a third party Codec.
I tried using DVCPro HD 720p60 codec but this doesn't deliver the Data rate I was told to expect (14 mb/sec rather than 5.6mb/s). However it does seem to work. Will I simply have to scale the final movie to fit the proportions of PAL 4:3? As this is a green screen shoot how will my Key be effected by the Codec, GOP, P an B frames, or will final export with a quicktime conversion solve this. I appreciate your help in clearling up these mysterys of HD
I am on a dual processor G5 with 3 gig of Ram.
    Thanks Sincerely
    Peter Stenhouse

Great! It was shot at 720p25 (so i'm told) there was no use of the variable fps.
I'm not delivering a DV master I want to deliver broadcast quality and as I also dong alot of post, a green screen key, I need the best quality possible. We shot on HD because, we originally we were going to shoot some slo mo. Typically the director changed his mind, didn't shoot any and now I am going through HD **** for no real reason (though the more filmic color space will be nice I am sure)
Via Component sounds like a good idea, though I still need to adjust the deck to output 25fps rather than 30, which it somehow seems to be doing at the moment.
Ordinarily I would capture from digibeta, but we only have the HD deck over the weekend so don't have the luxury of capturing offline RT and then onlining 8 bit uncompressed has I normally do. But I digress.
I don't particularly want to have to work at 30 or 60 fps, beacues I never have before, and because the final output is for PAL Broadcast.
I really appreciate your advice, the glimmers of hope that your words of wisdom provide.
    Sincerely
    Peter Stenhouse
Excuse the ranting, I'm pretty stressed, I hate colliding with the first hurdle this hard.

  • Trying to capture DV tape footage - "File Error: Unknown file."

I have been using FCE for a long time - have a Mac Pro - 4 HD's and its hooked up to to a Sony GV-D1000 player by firewire. I have captured hundreds of tapes over the years and now I can't. I get the above message. I shoot on a Sony PD170.
The only change I made recently is I cloned the old system HD to a new Hitachi 1TB drive and finally upgraded to Snow Leopard. I am using FCE 4.0.1
Any suggestions would be appreciated - thanks.

With the Pro Apps (including FCE), it is best to uninstall & reinstall the app when you upgrade OS X (for example, when upgrading from from Leopard to Snow Leopard). I know that sounds inconvenient and perhaps illogical, but many have found that upgrading OS X over top of existing installed Pro Apps often breaks them. An uninstall/reinstall usually cures the problems.

  • Can you capture desktop/monitor footage with Premiere CC?

I'm looking to put together some animation tutorials/making of kind of videos and want to record my digital process as I work.  To my knowledge Premiere can't do this but I noticed while researching that some editing software does so I figured it'd be worth checking since I already have Premiere CC anyway.  I dug around the program a bit and I'm not seeing anything but I'm not entirely sure I'd spot the options for it if it does.

  • Extremely nasty Image Capture bug deletes video with import to Aperture

Image Capture allows one to specify Aperture as a target.
Nice feature, but Aperture can't handle video.
So what happens when the images you choose to import contain a video, and you've set IC to delete after import?
The videos are deleted, but not imported. If you were to import directly to Aperture they would be saved to the desktop by Aperture, but with this route they are deleted.
    Lethal bug.

Don't let Image Capture, Aperture (oh, and btw, Aperture 3 does support video) or iPhoto delete pics. Ever.
After you have transferred the material to your Mac you can simply reformat the card with your camera - once you've verified the transfer. Reformatting the card with your camera is much faster - takes seconds - and has the added advantage of refreshing the directory structure on the card and so helping to avoid problems in the future.
And finally, given that both iPhoto and Aperture can import directly from your camera, why are you using Image Capture?
    Regards
    TD
After losing some images on my first attempts with iPhoto I quit using it. The whole program made no sense to me. I've been transferring images to the desktop with Image Capture, editing with Gimp, and storing in an image folder. I was hoping to give iPhoto another try and lost a couple of images... now trying to figure out where these things go. I'll try to import directly from the camera now that you've made me aware of the possibility. Any idea about this cache in the meantime? Maybe I'll find all the images I lost.

  • How much loss in capturing from tape?

Looks like the days of tape are numbered.  If they haven't already, everyone will be using tapeless formats before too long.  I have a large library of HD (miniDV format) tape.  When clients want raw footage, I copy tape-to-tape using two camcorders and send a copy of the raw footage.  That will soon be impossible, because no one will be able to play the tapes. What's left is to use CS4 to capture the tape footage directly to a hard drive or memory stick and send that. I have no idea how much loss of data there is doing that, and hope someone might have some numbers to share.
    Thanks.

A Firewire transfer from tape to computer is a copy operation... so there is no loss of quality
Of course, those files are "about" 13Gig per hour for DV (I don't know the size for HDV) so sending a file to someone is going to mean several DVD's to write the files, in 4Gig segments, or copying to a USB hard drive and sending that back and forth

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Elements 4.0 did not capture entire 1 hour miniDV tape contents

I used Elements 4.0 for the first time and in capturing the footage on a one hour tape, it stopped after 46 minutes and gave some sort of message (I failed to write it down at 1 AM) to the effect "Exceed Threshold 699KB".
Why would Elements not capture the entire 1 hour?
    Thank you.

I still cannot drag the template into Video 1 or 2.
You would only use Video 1, if you had no Asset that you wished to "show through" the "hole" in this Title. If you have Assets on both Video 1 & 2, you would use Video 3, otherwise, use Video 2 above whatever you wish to see through the hole.
Do I need to be in Edit or Create Menus?
    Edit Mode.
Let’s try this from the ground up, shall we?
In Timeline View Mode, click on the Edit tab. Then click on Titles and navigate to General (Show All) and navigate to the Canvas Titles. In PrE 4.0, there are two. We will use Canvas_frame.
Look at your Timeline display, and make sure that you have either an empty Video 2 or Video 3 Track, above the Clip that you wish to "show through" the "hole" in Canvas_frame. There is a zoom slider at the top of the Timeline Panel. It is to the right of a little double clock icon (the TimeStretch icon). Slide the black bar in this slider to the right, to expand the horizontal view of the Timeline. You may have to scroll (bottom of the Timeline Panel) the Timeline’s view back and forth a bit, until you have the area, where you wish to place the Title, in full view.
In the Titles Panel (this is really an extension of Organize, but automatically shows the Titles, which are part of the Functional Content, installed along with the program files in PrE), click-drag on Canvas_frame. While holding down the left mouse button, drag it to the spot you desire on Video 2 Track, or Video 3 Track. If you only have Clips/Assets on Video 1 Track, choose Video 2 Track. Let’s assume that this is your case and that Video 2 Track is empty above your Clip in Video 1 Track. The cursor will change to include the little Insert Edit icon, but that is not important, as we are placing this Title onto an empty Video Track. When the Title is over that Video Track, you will get a long white line with two little right-facing arrowheads. Depending on what you have on your Timeline, it might not be easy to see the lower of these. When you have positioned your Title onto Video 2 Track, you can release it and it will stick there. You can move it along the Video 2 Track, as is required. You can also change the Duration of the Title by click-dragging on either the Head, or the Tail, of the Title.
    Done.
If this is not working for you, then there is something very wrong with either your installation of PrE, or with your system.
    Now, a couple of questions:
1.) I assume that when, in Edit Mode, you click on Titles, you open up the Title Templates, and can find the Canvas_frame. Is this correct?
2.) I assume that you have an empty Video (2, or 3) above the Clip, over which you wish to place this Title. Is that correct?
3.) If one clicks and drags (holding down the left mouse button, for right-handed mouse settings) on something (say a Clip in Organizer) in PrE, it can be dragged to the Timeline. Does this happen for you? Can you click-drag on Clips in Organizer and get them to the Timeline?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Capture Entire Beta Tape

I’m using FCP 6 with a Sony J-30 Beta Cam player, I just learned how to use Log and Capture to get clips from the beta cam player, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the entire content of a tape without the need for loging, will there be a way to insert a Beta tape and start capturing until the tape is done playing?
The reason I would like to do this is because we have thousands of Beta Tapes from 30 to 40 years ago that we will like to digitize and archive.
Any other helpful information would be appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

Also make sure you put a check mark and time limit for 'Limit Capture Now to'...in your Systems Settings dialog.
If you don't, FCP will allocate the entire available drive space, since it has no idea how long to capture...and you'll end up with an unusable file.
I always set it for a couple of minutes beyond my longest tape to capture. If your biggest beta is a 40, then set it for 42. If you have a 90 min. tape, then set it for 92...etc.
You can set it for whatever you want (as long as it is more than you need) and it will not affect the length of any media to be captured.
