FCS 3 vs FCS 2

Hi,
I use Final cut studio 2 for several years, and now I tried a friend's FCS3 and I saw a few details that we do not like or do not know set.
1. When I changing the speed of one Clip and want to copy-paste to a series of clips, FC change the speed but does not prolong the duration of clip, but keep the same duration only slowly. Can I copy speed to extend the duration of the clip? And how?
2.I can't make a template in motion and open the Template in FC. When I open template in FC I have white screen and can't do anything with this template. Where is problem?
3.When I open the window to open, save, or select folder to encoding in the compresor, it not remember last folder which was opened.. FCS2 was remembered this last Folder. Now every time I must open a few folders to get to the desired folder... frustrating,,, grrr
OS X 10.6.2,,, Final cut 7.0.1
Regards.

Hi,
concerning your question #1 you can read this post from the forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2117640&tstart=0
About question #2 I remember it was discussed when FCS3 became available; do a search on this forum and you should find the thread.

Armando.

  • Looking for help on what Hardware to use for FCS

I am looking to set up a shared storage for use in a small editing network and I am having a hard time getting my head around what exactly I need.
I have 4 edit stations that currently run externals. I am looking at a solution like FCS to centralize all the captures and media to edit from. We usually edit Apple Pro res and DV footage.
My understanding is that we need to connect to the storage using Fibre to get the bandwidth needed. My issue is wondering exactly how much hardware I need to get this done and what the layout of this hardware should be.
I currently have a Mac Pro that could be dedicated as the server running FCS. I plan on buying a Fibre connected storage RAID and outfitting the 4 Mac Pros in the office with Fibre cards. I am guessing I need to connect all of this with a Fibre switch. Is this all I would need? Would I be able to capture and edit off of the RAID using this configuration? What else would I need?
I have been looking for diagrams or some type of examples of configurations people have use and not been able to find much. Any advice would be great
    Thanks

XServe, Promise RAID, QLogic Sanbox 20 port fiber switch, XSAN software, 5 Mac Pro Fiber cards.
That's pretty good, assuming you have the numbers right. You need Xsan software and a Fibre Channel card for every computer connecting via FC (the Xserves and Mac Pros). Note that the 20 port switch has 16 usable ports, and each storage or computing device should connect to two ports, so you've basically filled it up with what you've listed.
I also have an XServe that is on the (10 GB ethernet) network (in another building on campus) that is currently being used as a login/account manager (could it be used for metadata as well?).
It would be good to use this as the failover MDC to support the one you are purchasing. Can you relocate it so it is physically closer? It should be Intel. It is not recommended to have the primary MDC perform directory or other services, but some people do this (at a slight risk) on a secondary server.
Will I need to reduce one of the Mac Pro editors to merely a metadata controller (leaving me with 4 editors)?
Not recommended, except maybe as a backup.
Can I use the existing network for the LAN and METADATA Switches?
You'll need a separate network for metadata traffic. This can be physical or virtual (on higher-end switches).
@trezero-your list is the first I've seen with 3 XServes. Is this just because of FCServer? Can you not use the MDC or one of the networked editors?
FCServer warrants its own machine since it is fairly CPU intensive, especially if you are doing transcoding on it. In high performance environments people will add a second machine just to do rendering.
Don't put any other server process on the MDC. You could use the backup MDC for FCSvr, but this isn't recommended since if it gets failed over to, then it is no longer the backup, and you're again risking your Xsan integrity on a shared system. In an educational lab setup where the risk of downtime is not an inconvenience, you could probably get away with it.
You would probably benefit from either taking the Xsan class or working with a professional systems integrator. I'm based in the Southeast and can refer you to a few people if you contact me offline.

  • How can install FCS 2 on a MacBook Pro??

I'm trying to install FCS 2 on my MacBook Pro, and the system prompted me: "powerpc is not supported".
    My MacBook Pro is:
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Somebody has a solution for this matter?
    Thanx a lot!

Install "Rosetta" from a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD first.
There are already several threads here about this.

  • 24" iMac for Recreational FCS/P Use?

I'm into recreational video editing and want to step up from FCE into something more robust, but I don't want to make the leap to a Mac Pro yet (need to let my salary catch up with my taste). Just have a few Qs before I make the purchase.
    - Will the iMac handle FCS if I run only one component at a time? (I do want to run Motion, but don't need Color)
    - Can I use an eSATA drive with firewire support as a dedicated HDD?
    - Will this system last 5 - 6 years?
    - Adobe Production Premium vs FCS, any thoughts? I've been watching tutorials for both to decide between them and am leaning towards FCS, but really like Adobe Soundbooth.
    - 2.8GHz or 3.06GHz?
    Thanks!
    -FE

Will the iMac handle FCS if I run only one component at a time?
An iMac with enough RAM should be able to handle multiple apps (FCS apps and others) open at the same time. Motion might be a bit slow performing depending on the GPU power available.
Can I use an eSATA drive with firewire support as a dedicated HDD?
eSATA is a connection type and transfer protocol ... as is Firewire. They are two different types of the same thing. You can use an external Firewire drive but I don't think the iMac has connectivity options for eSATA.
Will this system last 5 - 6 years?
If you feed and care for it properly, yes. I still have a MDD G4 that runs and operates perfectly well.
Adobe Production Premium vs FCS, any thoughts?
They're both merely tools. Some people use both.
    2.8GHz or 3.06GHz?
IMHO, I don't think you'd see much of a performance difference between the two.

  • Video "Dropouts" with FCS and Mountain Lion

I would like to see if anyone else is having this problem and maybe save some folks from the experience.
    I have two macs.
    #1- Imac, 2.93, core 2 duo, 4g ram, 24".
    #2-Macbook Pro, 17", 2.53, 4g
    4t g-raids
Clean Install done on Imac of Mountain Lion.  Reloaded fcs.
Did NOT touch macbook.  Still running Snow Leopard.
Working on large video job...1080 60i, avchd, panny cam.
Went to transfer footage using all usual settings.
Video on imac looked like "old school" video drop outs.  As you can imagine, it was a long night to figure this out.
Erased footage and hooked up my g-raids to the Macbook.  Looked fine.
Took hard drives back to imac, tried transfer again.  Stuttering and drop outs continued.
Back to Macbook with Snow Leopard, no problems.  My guy is editing job right now on Macbook.
I am in the middle of a clean install of Snow Leopard on the imac.  I'm gonna have to send the "boys" out to get my $20 bucks back from Apple.
Thought I'd post it in case someone sees same thing and thinks they are crazy.
Mountain lion could not capture footage without drops.  Snow Leopard (my trusty os) did it all.
Shocked I say, Apple....Shocked.  (Not really, been down this road before) Never believe what they say.  Don't upgrade unless forced by gunpoint.

Thanks for the link to the remover. I had been using AppZapper and was going to try something similar. Removing qmaster did the trick to get Final Cut to open. And... I can say it is a fine speed improvement for me on video scrubbing and other things from the first playing around.
As soon as qmaster is back in the mix... crash on startup.
Installing qmaster with Pacifist doesn't cause the daemon to start like the FCS installer. So, I thought starting from the terminal might lead to better data for troubleshooting. So far, when qmaster is installed launch Compressor will start, but it doesn't recognize the computer as a Quick Cluster and Qadministrator will crash when trying to create one. So, now it is diving into the qmaster preference files to see if Pacifist didn't copy in the machine name or something simple.
Thanks to those sticking with this thread. At least I can function with editing now and I can export using QuickTime. I am just without the services of Compressor and its batching until I can find the clue missing with the cluster (at least that's where I am thinking the next step is).

  • What configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback.

Yep, just wondering what configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback or lagging.  I'm thinking about the 7200rpm, 2.2ghz, antiglare, 4gb ram, with 1gb GPU graphics card configuration

Nothing wrong with the computer. Playback is dependent on the media and the drives.

  • Radio Utilization and FCS Errors

Here is an output from our Aruba Airwave server. I've been trying to reduce the constant radio utilization on some of our APs. I succesfully did it by disabling the 1 and 2Mb data rates on the APs. However, for some reason the FCS errors have gone up on all APs. Any ideas why? The graph on the left shows a drop in interference, so I would think the FCS errors would decrease.
    Thanks,
    Chris

On a good note, it looks like the drop in radio utilization translated to a significant throughput increase. On some of our APs, we are seeing a 100% increase in throughput speeds. This was using a 2.4Ghz N client with 20MHz channels connecting to an 1140 AP. I'm going to do a site-survey later on some of our 3500 APs.
I also temporarily disabled the 5.5 and 11 Mb speeds and saw another slight (20-30%) jump in throughput, but we aren't ready to kick 802.11b clients off the network.

  • Can't view videos using FCS client on Macbook Pro

I'm on a new Macbook Pro and I'm accessing FCS via the client. All seems fine but when I attempt to view an asset by clicking on the "video clip" icon nothing happens. Same issue when I open the asset and use the "Actions" drop down and select view.

Problem solved. Sort of. I asked our server admin to set me up in a new user group, new UN and PW. It was a shot in the dark, but it worked. Previously I had been set up as an Admin. Maybe there is a limit to the number of users that can be assigned to the Admin role? Or more precisely, maybe there is a limit to the number of machines that can be assigned to the admin role? Because I am able to access the Admin acct. successfully on my iMac at the office. Anyway, very strange. If you have any thoughts please let me know. Otherwise, thanks for the original response.

  • How can you install FCS 3 on a computer that already has FCPX?

Ok so, I wiped my computer to install Lion, and then installed FCP X. I now want to install Final Cut Studio 3, but it won't let me install Final Cut, Motion, or Compressor (the other apps install fine). Presumably this is because I have downloaded the new versions of those respective apps from the app store.
I know you can install FCP X on a computer with FCS3 on it (and still be able to use both versions of FCP) but can you do the opposite? If so I haven't found out how (short of installing on a different disk/partition of course). I tried moving FCPX out of the applications folder (in hopes that it was as simple as the installer checks the apps folder first for another copy of Final Cut) but that simply moved an alias and as far as I can tell, FCPX cannot be moved out of the applications folder.
Anyone have any ideas or experienced something similar?
    Thanks!

Hey Brad thanks, but the link you provided is the opposite of what I need. That link is for if you want to install FCPX on a system with FCS 3 already on it. I have FCP X already installed and need to install FCS 3 on the same drive.
I cannot move the FCPX, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 applications to a new folder, because when I do it only moves an alias over for some reason (not the actual application).
@Ronnie yes I know I can install another copy of OSX on another drive/partition and install FCS 3 on that, but I am trying to not have to do that. Clearly FCPX and FCS 3 can exist on the same partition if you install FCS 3 first, so why can't I do it if I already have FCPX installed? Seems silly. I also do not want to have to reboot each time I want to go into FCS3, not to mention all of the disk space I would lose by installing the OS on one of my other internal drive (which currently are all filled with Media drives, so I would have to repartition a sizable chunk of one of them just for FC Studio).

  • What do I need to run FCS 2?

I posted this question in a different forum (Content creation with Final Cut Studio) but received no replies.
I'm hoping that posting it elsewhere will net me better results.
I recently bought FCS2, knowing that I was more than likely going to have to do some major upgrading to my mac to be able to use it. Especially the graphics card.
Now that I have FCS 2, I'm now worried that my mac just won't be the right kind no matter how much upgrading I do, but I could be wrong.
So here I am asking for some advice. My current system is a Power Mac G5 The processor is a Power PC Dual 1.8 GHz. 4 GB DDR SDRAM memory, which I believe is the max memory for this system. My optical drive is an internal Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D. Graphics card which I know needs to be upgraded is an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 with 64 MB VRAM (very sluggish with motion), and my display is the 23 inch apple cinema display.
So, am I just going to have to consider purchasing a new Intel G5, or is there some hope for this machine?
What I use it for now is just basic DV and using iDVD to burn DVD's since I haven't learned DVD studio pro yet. I plan, (after some learning) to get into HD video and DVD's which makes me think that I may need a new optical drive also.
Can anyone give some advice on the best upgrades needed for this, or am I out of luck?
Message was edited by: Bobby Merkle

Sounds to me like you're fine. You meet all the system requirements, and I know many around here that still use G5 systems. Just upgrade your card to an x1900, and you'll have a fully capable system for what you're doing. Also, make sure your monitor is at least 17" if you ever plan to utilize Color.
BTW: No such thing as an Intel G5. They are called Intel C2Ds.

    Hi,
Based on my research, this event ID 81 occurs if the account that the SQL Server agent runs as on the server with the Reporting database does not have permissions to
the collection database on the other server. This most frequently happens if the SQL Server agent is running as Local System.
If you are using an existing SQL Server computer for Client Security, you may not have the SQL Server Agent service using a domain user account.
For Client Security to work correctly, you must give permissions for the account under which the SQL Server Agent service runs on the reporting database to the collection database on the
    management, collection, and reporting servers.
In addition, the event ID 10002 is usually due to the installation of Client Security not being fully configured.
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Does any of you do your FCS work (exclusively) on a Mac Book Pro?...

This question does not relate, strictly speaking, to FCS itself but rather to those users who require the kind of computing power FCS requires to run.... so I hope it's ok to post here. Please excuse me if not....
I'm just wondering... *does any of you work exclusively - or almost exclusively - on a (17") macbook pro?* I mean, really do your work/carry out your job on one of these computers?
My erstwhile state-of-the-art desktop G5, the last of the non-intel macs (purchased about 4 years ago?), is starting to drive me nuts. It has served me well but the time has come for me to upgrade my machine....
I use Creative Suite apps daily for my work (publishing a quarterly printed magazine) and also do some work in Final Cut Studio. I expect that, over the next year or so, I'll be using FCS more and more, to create short videos (< 10 mins) related to my work. These will almost certainly be for web delivery only.
I have been on the verge of buying a new mac pro, 8-core, but am wavering given that I may soon be going abroad for 9 months, continuing my work while abroad. If that happens, I'll need to take whatever computer I buy - either the mbp or the mac pro (which I would be plugging in in the apartment I'll be renting).
*Is the mbp a machine that any of you works on daily... and that you use to run the apps mentioned above?...* Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I know this question is a bit like saying 'What car should I buy?' so be gentle, please ;o)
    Hugh
p.s. incidentally, before I got my desktop G5, I used to do all my work on a 17" Powerbook G4. No video back then tho'. Those were the days!...

Well, I may be unsuited to answering your question as I rarely do any of MY work on a MBP, but I am aware of their capabilities.
Based on what you've stated, I see no reason why you CAN'T work with a MBP. They tend to handle CS applications well. Especially AI and PS (I'm assuming since you work for print that you're not using AE much). I've also used it for FCS.
Your limitations are sort of what you might expect. You can't install a video capture card, so you're kind of limited to what you can injest via FW. (Unless the injest is done for you, and then you can just hook up a drive).
The amount of RAM you can put in there is limited, but these days there tends to be plenty to run those apps.
Frankly, my biggest issue is screen size, and keyboard size. I can't stand staring at a 17" screen for Photoshop work, and I'm used to standard keyboards so I don't like typing on those smallish laptop keyboards. I hate the track pad as well, but at least you can connect a mouse if you want.
So, if none of those things bother you, a MBP is much easier to lug around than a Mac Pro.

  • Any need to partition hard drives for FCS or CS4 on my new Mac Pro?

This is my first post here but have learned a lot recently just by visiting various threads. I'm new to Mac and Final Cut Studio so I have a few questions about setting up the system and hard drives. I've read about partitions on hard drives on various sites but I wonder if that is outdated advice at this point. I will be learning FCS and CS4 by working on various SD DV and HDV/AVCHD projects so I want my system flexible but as high performance as I can muster. I will be working mostly in FCP and AfterEffects for a while and do intend to burn blu-ray discs eventually.
My system is a current Mac Pro quad core with 8gb RAM with current versions of final cut and adobe suites. I will do a clean install with snow leopard. I have a 640gb main drive and I've purchased three 1tb Western Digital black internal drives. I am wondering if I need to partition my main drive because I may want to also run a windows OS eventually for blu-ray playback. The other 3 drives are intended for project files, media/capture and back-up respectively. I don't have the budget for a RAID at the moment. So my questions for this thread are:
    1. Do I need to partition the main drive now or should I wait until I need to do so with boot camp/windows installation later?
    2. If I should partition main drive now, how much should I dedicate for the second partition on the OS drive for eventual windows 7/blu-ray playback?
    3. Should I partition any of the three additional drives?
    4. If I should partition any of those additional drives, how many partitions should I make and what sizes should the partitions be for each drive?
    5. Is my plan for my four drives a sound one for my purposes? (os, projects, media, backup)
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi, and welcome.
    1. Don't partition your system drive until you need to. If you choose to run Windows via Bootcamp, you'll have to, in which case, 150GB will be plenty if all you want to do is playback (may even be overkill). However, you can probably do just as well running Windows under Parallels or VMWare, whch would be my recommendation. Performance is very good, and the ease of moving from OSX to Win makes them very convenient. Parallels (which I know better) automatically resizes the amount of space it needs to meet your usage. You can also run your Parallels virtual machine from somewhere other than your system disk. I imagine VMWare provides similar features. Both are well thought of.
    2. Your disk use plan is OK, with one caveat - if what you're working on is critical to you, you should also have an external backup. With backup on an internal drive, there's a (very small, but definite) risk that, if the Mac Pro hit a disaster, your backup would be lost. I'd suggest an external Firewire 800 or eSATA enclosure and, either another drive, or just use one of the WDs there instead of internally.
    3. Don't partition the other disks either. Just make sure they're formatted MAC OS Journaled (do this via Disk Utility). Another benefit of Parallels/VMWare is they allow Windows to read/write Mac formatted disks.
    Hope that helps

  • Is there any way to manually relink media in FCS?

We recently transitioned from NFS to AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) for our shared storage in our FCS environment.
There have been a couple of headaches involved, but it has been a largely smooth transition except for one problem.
A couple of our assets (some of the most important ones, naturally) had colons ( : ) in the filenames. This was fine for NFS - the backing store's filesystem could handle them. But AFP cannot since apparently OS X considers the colon an unusable character in file names due to its own directory requirements.
So we are left with a handful of assets that are fully annotated in FCS, comprehensive metadata, etc. that show the original media files as missing. The files are there - they were just renamed automatically by the system to replace the colon.
I am wondering if there is any way to tell FCS that the filename has changed since there is no possible way that I can change the filename back.
If I have to get my hands dirty on the FCS command line to accomplish this, I am not hesitant to do so. I just don't know how to go about doing it...
    A bit about my system:
Apple Xserve running Snow Leopard (10.6.3)
    Final Cut Server version 1.5.2
The backing stores are presented via AFP using Netatalk from a Linux-based storage array (I know this unconventional but it actually works quite well - except the "no colons in AFP or Apple native filenames" issue...)
If there is anyone out there who can shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it!
    Thank you all!

    Thank you for the clarification.
Indeed you are correct - the Netatalk documentation merely implies that the colon is a forbidden Mac OS character - not a forbidden Netatalk character.
Netatalk itself (at least in my case on Ubuntu 10.04) does handle the translation of the colon in a way that is comprehensible to Mac OS.
The colon was truncated to a double-quote (") when I attempted the rename on the Linux command line. After seeing this, I renamed the file again on the Linux command line to remove the colon.
When using the Mac OS command line (terminal), I was able to get the file to reflect a colon:
    $ cp ./file.mov ./file\ duration\ 10\:00.mov
While the Finder will not permit a colon in the filename under any circumstances (at least not as far as I can tell), the command line will permit it if you use the escape character (\).
In the Finder, the new file shows as "file duration 10/00.mov" but if you run an "ls" on the command line it shows as "file duration 10:00.mov" which is correct.
In Linux, it shows as "file duration 10:2f00.mov" so Netatalk handled the markup in such a way that it is able to present the correct filename to the Mac OS.
Despite the Finder/Terminal name mismatch (the filename having a "/" in the Finder display), FCS is perfectly happy, since it reads the filename directly.
And if you don't want to get your hands dirty on the command line, using a forward-slash (/) in the filename within the FInder does translate to a colon when you view the file from the terminal, as was described by slowfranklin above. (I am from a Unix background where the slash is a (sometimes the only) forbidden character, so I also used the command-line method just to see if it would work)
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.
