FCS 5.1: Detecting camcorder issues (Sony HDV HDR-HC3)

Hi I just got FCS 5.1 and it doesn't seem to want to detect my camcorder (Sony HDV HDR-HC3). iMovie detects it just fine, but in FCP I have no control over my camcorder when I go to 'Log and Capture', nor am I able to preview anything. My camera is set up properly I'm sure. Is there something I'm doing wrong? A setting I don't know about? Any help would be appreciated.

Salvador, what settings did you find? I presume you're importing HDV, not DV, otherwise what's the point of an HDV camera... I must be dumb, too, because my FCE HD (current version) doesn't capture from my HDV HDR-HC3. My camcorder is set for VCR = HDV and iLink conversion is off, per the manual. I tried setting up projects for both Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 and 1080i60, then doing Cmd-8 (capture). First it prompted me for a clip name, then I got a black screen saying it was cuing the tape and the tape automatically started playing. It said press Esc to stop, but when I pressed Esc it said the capture was aborted and there was no clip. I've been capturing and editing standard DV on my older Sony DV Handycam for years, and it worked great with no hassle. This baffles me.
iMovie recognizes the camera, and controls the rewind, etc., but no picture and no import.
I'm using the same FireWire cable I used with my older Handycam. Do I need a special Sony iLink cable?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

  • My  sony hdv 1080i mini dv camera won't capture

I've been trying to capture a video that I recorded with my SONY (HDV) HDR-FX1E camera from sony hdv 1080i mini dv but the camera would go on playing but it won't display any frame and it would show this error when i click stop stating that "recorder captured no frames". When its playing from the sony hdv 1080i mini dv camera it shows DV SP PAL on the lcd monitor.
PLEASE, someone should help me, I need to capture this video now.

As far as I know, HDV does not display during transfter from camcorder via Firewire

  • Editing in iMovie 6 with Sony HDV

I would like to know before I buy a Sony HDV how much disc space to I need to have. I just want to edit my recordings for CD-R burning (not necesarily in HDV) and will store the MiniDv disks or DVDs (whichever version I purchase from Sony). I already have the firewire cable for Sony. I have a 17" PB (1.67, 1 GB RAM). I can buy an external firewire HD. Would like to know from people that have done it and do it successfully.
OR, would like to know what other options do I have to record in camcorder the best quality image I can get after editing and recording via iMovie and iDVD. I have tested a Sony MiniDv and found it to have poor video quality or not as expected and returned it.

    Hello d0csp33d,
although I have no first hand knowledge on HDV editing, what I hear is this:
    • file size of captured HDV footage is 4x the size of DV (which is already 13 GB/hr.)
    • capture times are 2-4x realtime depending on your mac's configuration. Only the most recent (and powerful) macs are able to capture in realtime.
    • it is not recommended to edit in HDV when the end product is a (SL) DVD. Instead it is recommended to downconvert to SD upon import and then edit as usual.
I have tested a Sony MiniDv and found it to have poor video quality
What was wrong with it? Which model? Did you judge the quality on your mac (in iMovie)?
I own two Sony camcorders (no HDV, no 3CCD) and my customers enjoy my videos and I have never had complaints about pic quality.
    hope this helps

  • Capturing  through Sony HDV using firewire800 to 400 adaptor is not recognizing can any body help me solve this

I am trying to capture using firewire 800 to 400 adaptor through a Sony HDV VTR. The VTR is not recognizing can some body help me solve this problem.
I am using FCP7 and IMAC with 10.6.8 version os
I dont have a 6 pin or 400 firewire port in the system

    Let's start with basics.
Does your computer recognize that there is a VTR attached?
    • Open up system profiler>Hardware>FireWire.  Does your machine show up?
If no, you need to figure out if the problem lies with the VTR, the cable, the adapter or your computer.
My guess is with the adapter. A number of people have expressed frustration getting fw400 device to work through fw800 ports.
If that's your problem, see if you can find an older Mac w/ fw400 ports or a dedicated fw800 to 400 cable.
    good luck,

ps - In "locking the barn after the paddle has been lost upstream" mode, this is why non-expandable computers like the iMac are so problematic. A MacBookPro with the expresscard 34 slot or a MacPro with 3 slots can work around these kind of issues. A closed box like the iMac is a dead end. Sorry.

  • Can't preview 1920x1080 timeline on HDTV via Sony HDV deck - help!

I am trying to play back from my 1920x1080 HDTV timeline (from FCP on MacBook) on an LG HDTV by connecting to a Sony HDV deck via firewire 800, and then going out from the deck via component to the tv – however, I am having problems not being able to get a clean video signal & it seems that the deck cannot process the video stream properly.  After scouring the internet and various forums, the only conclusion that I can reach is that because the HD video needs to be processed, it is impossible to properly view the footage back via this method without something like a Blackmagic Decklink card/conversion syste.  This is quite a big problem for me, as I will probably in the future have to use the same method just to play out to tape (on the HDV deck) and no matter what settings I have tried, it just doesn't want to work!
Any hints or tips to bypass this without the need for any other external hardware?  Would something like  a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Cable help at all – we have one of those.

FW800 can't stream full uncompressed HD video, which is what the HDTV needs.  You need an HDMI connection.  You're going to need an AJA Knoa LHi or some other such card.  You may want to look into a less expensive option such as the MXO2 if you only want to see the image on an HDTV and not on a qualified Production Monitor.
Going from FCP back to the deck is a totally different issue and not a problem.  HDV is highly compressed so it can stream via FW connection.  FCP using the Print To Tape function will take your Sequence and send a native HDV signal back to your deck, just when it captured from the deck.
HDTV will not be good enough for evaluating image quality and color correction, FYI.  It will only give you an idea of what your vide will look like on that specific brand and model of HDTV.
DVI and VGA have nothing to do with what you're trying to do.  They are only for going out to a computer monitor (not the same as a TV) or a projection system.

  • Detecting bad frames in HDV footage

HI, i just installed the update, i was really looking forward to the bug fix to detect bad frames in HDV footage, this was the update to cs3 and cs4 had it to begin with -
    Improved handling of MPEG streams
The   Premiere Pro 3.2.0 update provides improved handling of MPEG files.   Errors in the MPEG stream can occur during recording due to tape   dropouts, record start/stop glitches, timecode breaks, and a variety of   other causes. Bad frames caused by these MPEG stream errors are now   better identified in 3.2.0 during file indexing and playback. Because   older MPEG index files and conformed audio files (those existing before   the 3.2.0 update) do not take advantage of the improved MPEG handling,   these files should be deleted to avoid compatibility issues.
am disapointed as this is what i have been looking forward to, i guess am still stuck with cs3.

    Hallo,
Ich denke ich bin hier richtig.

    Dateiendung: MTS.
RoDo

  • Sony HDV

    Hi people.
Has anybody got the Sony HDRHC1 hi def video camera to work with Imovie?
The startup screen automatically starts but it will not capture any movie. I have set the camera up to HDV and the program the same but no luck.
Does Imovie support Sony HDV cameras?
Can I get a patch if it doesn't?
    Thanks Gavin

Have you tried all permutations of..
    (a) start iMovie, (b) plug in camera ..or
    (a) start camera and plug it in, (b) start iMovie ..or
    (a) start camera and plug it in, (b) start iMovie, (c) press Play on camcorder, (d) click Import in iMovie
    ..etc..?
If no permutation of camera on first, or iMovie on first, have you tried a different FireWire cable?
I've read your other post about this, so choose to reply either here or there, but NOT in both places!

  • Is there a Sony HDV 108050i to ProRes 108050i codec?

    Hello all:
I'm having a busy day on the forum.
    So here's the deal:
I have a Sony HDV-Z1U camcorder. I want to shoot in HDV 108050i (PAL) and I want to edit in ProRes 108050i.
The thing is I can't find a codec that will let me encode/capture HDV to (Sony) ProRes 50i. I can only find a codec to encode/capture at 60i.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks...

the Panasonic GH1 can record both in AVCHD and MJPEG. With the hacked firmware the MJPEG datarate is currently running around 70mbit/s, which can handle a smooth gradient over about 14 stops. MJPEG is a contained video file that QuickTime can play, directly out of the camera, however to edit it, FCE needs to convert it to AIC, and this process degrades the shadow detail, and gradients break up.
But even with the AVCHD, currently running around 30mbit/s, and doing simple shots like of a live concert, I can see the same separation in gradients after conversion that are not present beforehand.
is that better? I am now also a bit puzzled by one of the AVCHD archives seeming to be damaged, as FCE says it has an "invalid directory structure".

  • Unable to export with Sony HDV

    Newbie needs help!
I am using the Sony HDV 1080 recorder Model HDR-HC5.I can import into Final cut pro 7.0.1. and I am connecting via firewire/i link. But I can not export. The camera turns on as if it is going to record but the screen stays blue and it recorde nothing. What I am I doing wrong?? I have tried all kinds of different settings but nothing is working?
The sequence is 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9) not sure what else you might need...

okay. did you capture via firewire? did you capture as HDV, or did you convert to any other codec when you captured?
If you captured HDV, then having your footage in an HDV sequence, rendering/conforming, should do the trick, and you'll be able to export.
Exporting to HDV via FW is time consuming, because it needs to rebuild the GOP structure and create a new HDV file to send out to the tape.

  • Unable to import with Sony HDV

I am using the Sony HDV 1080 recorder Model HDR-HC5. I have tried every possible setting, read hours worth of forums, read the user manuals and Googled everything I can think of but I can't get Final cut pro 7.0.1 to log and capture or even see my camera to import footage... I am NOT a pro just a regular person trying to edit some movies! UGH... Can someone please walk me through the set up of this camera before it ends up in the trash! ;0)
    thanks

    Hi -
Also I believe this camera will record both HD and SD formats depending on which was selected at the time of recording. You should check the tapes to verify they are recorded in the format you expect them to be, as it will make a difference which Easy Set Up you choose.
And, as David has said, you must connect the camera and computer via firewire, which Sony calls iLink.
USB cannot be used with tape based cameras.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize

i am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize. I am not able to capture the content in DV mode. i am using a Firewire 800 to 400 converter and a 6 pin firewire cable to connect to the SonyHDV VTR. Please suggest me how do i do this.

The 800-400 converter plugs have proved a problem for this. What version of the software are you using. It sounds like an older version of FCP, if so you should ask your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 not recognizing Sony HDV Deck on older 2008 version MacPro's

I am trying to connect a Sony HDV deck to Final Cut Pro version 7 on an older 2008 version MacPro.  The problem was with the firewire mini port on the back i believe because i used a different deck which was the same model - but the only difference was it had a firewire 400 port instead of mini firewire port.  Anyway, the deck with the 400 firewire port worked for logging and capturing, etc... (this also worked when i re-tested it on the 2008 MacPro)  Im wondering if anyone else has had problems with the firewire mini port on the Sony HDV deck because it seems like almost every HDV deck i have with mini firewire has problems connecting to final cut pro or any editing application.  I know now that the deck i had in question the mini port is not working correctly but is there a way to fix this or prevent the cable - deck from terminating the connection with the mini cable being used.  I dont need an answer to the deck problem because i figured it out but just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem.  Thank you...
    Kyle

    >I dont need an answer to the deck problem ... just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem
So you don't want an answer, just insight. OK, I'll give it a go.  I've had several Sony VTRs with the 4pin Firewire port (proper name for what you refer to as "mini"), which is the same type of port that most DV and HDV cameras use as well.  One of the main things you need to be wary of is plugging in and unplugging a Firewire cable while either the device or the computer is powered on.  I know that marketing hype claims that Firewire is hot swap-able, but it really isn't safe to do so.  The pins in both the 4 pin connector as well as the 6 pin connectors are very close together and if they aren't aligned exactly right with the socket, can easily cause arching and damage a Firewire port on either or both ends.  Is that the kind of insight you were looking for?

  • No external video from HDV timeline through Sony HDV deck.

Without buying an external video card, is there a way to view an HDV timeline on an external monitor? I can capture HDV footage easily and see it play back fine in the Canvas on my Mac Pro, but I can't see the captured HDV footage on my external monitor that's hooked up via FireWire to my Sony HVR-M25 deck.
Here are the Audio/Video Settings I'm using:
Sequence Preset is HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset is HDV
Device Control Preset os Sony HDV Firewire
I'm also noticing that the Video Playback HDV options are grayed out, so I'm assuming I would either need an external video card to play back the capture HDV footage the timeline on my external monitor, or use another combination of codecs to (maybe) use my stock Mac Pro setup. Whew.
    Thanks in advance.

No. Sorry, but the format doesn't allow it. You can send a downconverted SD signal out via firewire in realtime, but it won't be your full HD image. If you want the full HD image, you need an HD capture device. #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.
