FCS academic pricing very enticing

Academic pricing on FCS is offered at the university where I work. I know that it's not upgradable. On the other hand, the full price for FCS is just too steep for the time being.
What I'd like to know is when the latest version of the FCS suite was released. My guess is that, if it was a relatively recent release I might be OK with purchasing the academic version and expecting it to be a current product for some time (a year or two?).
Can someone tell me when the latest FCS was released?
Thank you much.

Thank you all for your knowledgeable responses. My university bookstore has FCS at a price that makes it attractive and somewhat lower than the academic price you mention. (However, next week I’ll check on whether it’s an older version that they might be trying unload from their inventory.)
Because I’m fairly new to higher end editing I know it will take me some time to feel comfortable editing with it. For now FCE seems to be doing all that I need.
I’m looking at FCS because part of a project that I hope to be doing will have clips recorded at 24fps in addition to 30fps. I’ve never used 24fps, but I read that FCE cannot edit it.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Uninstalling FCS Academic

I'd been using Final Cut Studio Academic for the past year on my 17" Mac Book Pro for a year. I used to have another Final Cut Studio Retail on a G5 which I sold a few months ago along with the installed FCS. So now I find out that FCS Academic is not upgradeable and I have to buy an entirely new FCS2 Academic, and since my academic credential is in doubt, I've decided to bite the bullet and get a new FCS2 Retail complete.
My question is: should I uninstall FCS1 Academic on my MBP before installing FCS2 Retail because a) the FCS2 is the retail version, b) the FCS2 is a stand-alone app and not an upgrade. And if the answer is yes, can someone point me to a foolproof uninstall process?
    Thanks.

has uninstall info and it should work on the academic also.
I am not sure I would uninstall the old software in case there are compatibility/conversion issues, some people mentioned those with some filters (I think) on another thread.
Sometimes there can be issues with having some of the old software (such as Compressor templates in one upgrade), but I usually make sure to have the old software available one way or another in case I need to use it again

  • Installing FCS Academic

I am about to install FCS academic. I have a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I understand I may install my one copy into both.
Does it matter which one I do first?

as far as i know (i have academic also) your serial number is all you use to install, and the registration will allow two installations to be registered under your serial number. so you can install them in any order and it doesn't matter.

  • CS 5.5 upgrade - academic pricing?

Has anyone heard about the existence of academic pricing for the CS 5.5 upgrade?

Well, Adobe doesn't actually offer education pricing on upgrades, probably because the academic editions are already deeply discounted...  (this is one of the few important ways that the Student & Teacher Editions are different)
However, you can still upgrade it though normally - in fact Adobe was also recently asked a few questions about this, the student upgrade options for CS5.5.
    Hope this helps!

  • "Educational" vs "Academic" pricing for LogicStudio

Can one use software update with the "Educational" Logic Studio package ($149) as opposed to the "Academic"-priced one ($449) ?
    Thanks!

Just for clarification's sake, the 'academic' version that Apple sells on its website and in stores is $449, and I'd be willing to bet that that version also WILL NOT be upgradable. I'm guessing that this 150 deal you're talking about is special pricing through a specific institution, but the product you get is going to be the 'academic' license of LS, the same one you get from Apple for 450. Both are probably NOT upgradable down the road when 9 comes out. For 150, you can't go wrong. But if someone's debating between the academic version from apple (the 4450 one) and the retail, spend the extra 50 bucks, you'll be happy down the road.

  • FCS academic to FCS 2 regular version

I currently have the academic version of Final Cut Studio . I am about to purchase the regular version of FCS 2 . This will not be an upgrade since academic versions cannot be upgraded , it will be a brand new install of FCS 2. My question is , do I need to uninstall the academic version before I install FCS 2 ? If I do need to uninstall what is the cleanest way to do that ?

FCS 2 and a dual G5 runs fine. That graphics card should also be up to Motion 3 as well. My old 128mb card was limping with it, but the 256 card you have should make it fine.
IMHO, the clean install is by far the surest way to get to a happy system, and IMHO, it should be done periodically anyway. On a busy system, it sure makes things hum... We do it every semester at the school I teach at part time, and we have extremely stable setups there.

  • Off-campus access to Blackboard Academic Suite very slow with Leopard

To remotely access the Blackboard Academic Suite of Grand Rapids Community College using Leopard with Safari has been very slow to impossible since I installed 10.5. It takes 2 minutes to load the GRCC homepage. With 10.4 both pages loaded instantaneously. With Firefox they both load immediately. Strange enough, other sites load without any problems, in fact I notice that some are exceptionally fast in loading. I hope these issues will be straightened out soon.

A slow boot time can be caused by login items.
    User Login Items:
        Flux
        NoSleep
        ClipMenu
        Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector2
        BetterTouchTool
        USBOverdriveHelper
        TotalFinder
        Gmail Notifr
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Remove one login item noted above then restart your Mac to test. It may be one or multiple items causing the slow boot.

  • Upgrade FCS Academic To FCS 6

My academic serial number is not working when the new final cut studio 6 upgrade installation asks for my old serial number. I am positive I wrote it correctly, why does it say that it is invalid?

FinalThis, in case you're looking for a second
opinion, here is is: Danny_boy is correct. A FCS1
academic serial number will not work with the FCS2
    retail upgrade package.
At this point you probably have two options: contact
your retailer and see if you can swap the upgrade
package for the retail version and pay the
difference, or, try to find a buyer for the upgrade
and stick with FCS1 'till you can afford to buy the
    retail version.
I feel terrible now because I cannot get a refund but i clarified with the apple sales person exactly what I had so that no problems would occur. They cannot be allowed to do this, I should receive a refund because I was told otherwise. I would have never bought it (obviously). are exceptions made?

  • Beta License term of 30 days, not very enticing !

30 days is not sufficient to allow new delvelopers to learn and begin appreciate the platform. In fact I think any serious developer that consider a new RIA IDE, would be put off by such terms. In my opinion it takes at least 90 days for experience developers to learn a new tool and develop their first "real" application.  30 days is only good for simplistic "canned" examples and tutorials.  I don't think thats what Adobe wants.
Ever since Flex 3 builder initial release ( with AIR etc.)  I felt that somehow Adobe is missing its opportunity to gain a major share of the RIA developers community ( not Flash & web designers but the professional SW developers of enterprise level systems) , and  it appears (to me) that even now with the amazing new tools and technologies, something is amiss in the approach, as though Adobe has given up on that major market and only expects to target its already existing and loyal followers.
As a loyal and long time Flex developer that only wishes the best and like to see Abobe's  platform&tools becoming THE foundation and THE mainstream technology for the whole RIA & Mobile  & Media entreprise level systems & applications I voice tis opinion.
    Yoav

    Hi Yoav,
Beta testers who are already Flex Builder 3 customers will be provided an extension to continue testing the beta beyond 30 days.  Watch for communication about that soon.  The trial behavior of the beta does not necessarily reflect what we plan to support in the final.  I agree that it takes time to evaluate the platform and the tools, and we will determine the best way to support evaluators in the final release.

  • Sharing FCS files betw. Intel Mac and a G5 PowerPC

Does anyone have any experience sharing files between Intel portable MacBook/MacBook Pros and G5 PowerPCs?
Is it possible, and if so, can anyone share their experiences?
I'm asking because a friend wants to barter his PowerPC G5 and 23" monitor to me in exchange for some manhours editing his project, and I was thinking of taking it on as an extra editing FCS station, even though when I bought FCS (in June 2006) I began runnning it on an Intel portable.
Will my FCS discs install on it? And if so, will I be able to share project files between a PowerPC G5 and my portable?
Any anecdotes or dire warnings are greatly appreciated.

thanks very much for the clarification!
"not at the same time"? Not sure I follow. Do you mean a single FCS academic license can run on only two machines simultaneously? Or do I need a new license for each workstation?
What I'd like to do is continue running my copy of FCS1 Academic on my portable, and then install it on an additional machine (either the G5 or a MacBook Pro I'm planning to get next month), and edit between the two.
Again, thanks very much for the input.

  • Should I buy Logic Academic, or wait for Logic 8 or something?

I am reading up about Academic versions of Logic. I can get one, seeing as my brother is just starting college, however I also read it is not upgradable. This kind of worries me. What if I buy the academic, and right afterwods a new Logic comes out and I am in a bad position.
So do you think the Logic Academic would be worth it, even though its not upgradable? (I would purchase it around December or January)
    Thanks.

I was in the same position as you 6 months ago and I went with the academic version. Look at it this way, even if you purchase 7.1 at academic pricing and then purchase an entire new version when Logic 8 comes out you will still spend less money than buying 7.1 at full price and then paying for the upgrade to 8. Remember, the upgrade to 8 will cost everyone a few hundred dollars, right. So assuming that Logic 8 is still offered as an academic version, and for around $500, then $500+$500 = $1000. But $1000+$200 = $1200. Of course you stop saving when you look down the road to Logic 9.
Also, I don't think that you would ever be "in a bad position" - as you suggest - even if you can't immediately upgrade. We all have upgrade ****, I know. But buying a version of an app like Logic and working with it for a few years without upgrading isn't a terrible thing. A rock solid system is more important than chasing every upgrade. Pro studios often don't upgrade immediately specifically for that reason. If you can get the tools in your hands now for half the price then go for it. While only my opinion, I would say get the academic version when you are ready to make the purchase and put the other $500, if you have it, toward a high-end mic or preamp.

  • Can I use FCS without the media?

Can Final Cut Server be used as just an information database without the media the info references? We're using Filemaker right now, but we have FCS. We don't have the budget for a full online system for final cut server (all of the hard drive space required), but we do have some.
I just want to know if FCS requires having the media attached as well. I'd like our entire office to be able to use FCS at the very least to find information on our media and know how to get to even if the drive that has the media isn't online.

    To answer your last question
    Question:
Does this mean that FCS requires you to import the media before it will retain any information or before I can delete the media and it retains the info?
    Answer:
Yes, FCSvr requires you to import an asset before you can apply metadata to it. This can be a 1 second Quicktime movie to conserve on hard diskspace.
    Question:
If I just wanted to manually type a record for our media could I do that?
    Answer:
    No
So for the rest of your question, I have for example create scripts that take records from a Filemaker .csv dump and done the following.
    Scenario:
    Filemaker
Outputs a .csv file with information pertaining to asset, these records have a filename as part of the records, but if your data doesn't have a filename it's ok.
    Final Cut Server (script)
    1. Reads the CSV file and 1 record at a time create assets in Final Cut Server will retaining the metadata from Filemaker.
This way you can use Final Cut Server to search for files. If you use the original files vs (dummy i second files) you can actually view the proxies to see what the assets are.

  • What Is The Difference With FInal Cut Studio 2 Academic To Full Version?

Hi there I just got a Macbook Pro and plan on buying Final Cut Studio 2 but found the Academic version cheaper and was wondering what the difference is especially with quality and the handling of hd video Sony EX HD to be exact). Thank you for any responses.

The software is the same; the only difference is that you cannot upgrade an academic version and you have to be able to qualify for the academic pricing (students and teachers).

  • Academic: 179 + 179; Regular: 199 + 99 - OUCH!

Correct me if I'm wrong but...
I qualify for academic pricing. I bought Aperture 1 at a discount ($179?). It's not upgradable -- the disadvantage of the discount.
For A2, my choice is $179 for Academic (I still qualify), or $199 for regular . Either way, I end up as a top-dollar user.
    Regular first-time buyer of A2 -- $199
Regular upgrader of A1 to A2 -- $298 (total cost for both versions)
Academic twice -- $358 (total cost for both versions)
Academic moving to regular -- $378 (total cost for both versions)
Did I do the math right?
Apple, couldn't you offer an Academic-to-regular-pro-purchaser path price of $119? That would get me and the many like me into A2 at the same rate as an upgrader.

    Richard Hall wrote:
Could someone tell me where it is written that academic versions of Aperture 1 cannot be upgraded vis the $99 offer?
I can't tell you where its written, but I can tell you that even if you have Aperture version 1.5.x and it is the academic version - you can not upgrade to Aperture 2.0 for $99. As a registered user, I got an offer to upgrade to Aperture 2 for $99. There were no restrictions mentioned in the offer with regards to Academic versions. The link to the upgrade web page offer does not mention any restriction on Academic versions either (at least at the time I looked).
However, being aware of the problems people were having upgrading with their valid license keys, I called Apple about the upgrade. Initially, I was pointed to a web page that again did not state any Academic restrictions. When I finally got the right person at Apple, and gave them my license # (key); they came back and said that I could not upgrade to Aperture 2 for $99, because my license was for the Academic version.
I strongly suggested that Apple needs to:
    1) not e-mail the $99 upgrade invites to those registered under Academic licenses, and
    2) change their upgrade web page so that it provides a clear warning about the upgrade not being available to those with an Academic version/license.
Apple should also modify their Aperture Upgrade Checker tool to look for and warn customers that they have an Academic copy of Aperture and can not upgrade, unless they pay full price.

  • Upgrading from Logic 7 Academic to 8 re:passwords & serial numbers

Today I bought the Logic 8 upgrade from the Apple store. When I tried to run the upgrade procedures
it asks for the Logic 7 Academic serial number. All I can locate is the XSKey Serial number and when I enter it says it is invalid. Is there another serial number hidden somewhere so I can get up and running on Logic 8?
    Thanks

There are several ways to answer your post - let me have a go at three:
    1) The serial number for Logic 7 is on the front of the "Installing Your Software" booklet that came with Logic 7
    2) The normal installation process for Logic Studio allows for either serial number to be entered or for your XSKey to be plugged in, though several people have reported problems with this. Search the forums for "serial number" and you'll find plenty of posts like your own.
    3) Your main concern, however, should be that you may not be eligible for an upgrade. Logic 7 Academic is (at least in the States) not a valid upgrade path to Logic 8. You have to buy a new licence and that means paying full price unless you still qualify for academic pricing. That ruling does not seem to apply worldwide and I've even heard of people in the States who have been able to upgrade from an Academic Logic 7 licence to Logic 8. SOmetimes they had a non-academic licence number, sometimes they had a non-academic XSKey. I did hear of someone who bought an upgrade as you did who was able to get their money back but there's no guarantee.
If you fall foul of number 3, don't shoot me - I'm only the messenger ;o)
