FCS3 and 10.6.7

Anyone run successfully FC3 and 10.6.7 : I just got an new macbook pro thunderbolt and will try a clean install ?
Thanks for your feedback

Having to deal with some Alexa footage this past weekend I needed to move to 10.6.7. To save time I thought I'd try a OS upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6, NOT a complete wipe and install. After dealing with some expected driver issues for control surfaces, external effects, and audio interfaces all FCS3 applications worked fine without having to reinstall anything. Nuendo, After Effects, all Red, ARRI & misc. utilities worked fine. I wound up doing the same on two other 8 core MacPros.

  • Upgrading FCS3 and Snow Leopard...

I have purchased upgrades to Snow Leopard (from 10.5) and FCS3 (upgrade from FCS1). I have two computers that I need to do this on. Any ideas on how to approach this? Should I upgrade FCS3 first and make sure it's stable or load Snow Leopard and get it going? Any anecdotal stories would be great.

Read all of Nick's linked thread.
If in doubt about the need to do this, search the forum for issues related to upgrading OSX and/or FCS3 without a clean install. Entertaining reading.

  • Final Cut Pro X and 7 on same system

I am using Final Cut Pro 7 and I was not very keen on Final Cut Pro X when I tried it out.
However, I have just learned that it could be advantageous workwise if I am prepared to work on some FCPX projects.
I'm just curious to know if it is safe to run both applications on the same system; e.g. do they share preference files? Do they use the same plugins folder etc.?
I know that in the past (and I mean the distant past) I have had problems trying to run different versions of the same software in the same machine and I'm too comfortable with FCP7 to just leap into working with an application about which I got an unfavourable impression and which many fellow professionals have told me instigated a move to Premiere.
Can somebody give me some definitive advice, please?

Yes it's safe and no they don't use same plug-ins.
I'm running FCS3 and FCPX, Motion5, Compresor 4 on two systems. No problems.
Bets would be to follow these steps – the same start-up explanation.

  • Snow Leopard and Motion 4 even work together.

Upgraded to snow leopard last week and every application in Final Cut Studio 3 works great except Motion 4 which crashes on the launch. I did download the latest prosupport pkg as well. I re-installed FCS2 and the upgrade FCS3 and still will not launch Motion 4. Anyone know a work around or what to do ... thanks in advance.

You can't just reinstall Final Cut Studio over the top. You need to remove it completely and then reinstall it. ProKit uses different files on Leopard and Snow Leopard.

  • FCP 6 and Compressor 3.5 ?

I am currently running FCS v2, FCP 6.0.6. I went to download the FCP7 upgrade and my serial number for FCS2 was rejected. Yes, I have the "installing" booklet with the serial number stickers and support ID on it and I typed it in correctly (multiple times).
I really just need to run compressor 3.5 - I'm finishing a project and don't want to upgrade anything else just now.
Any thoughts on the magic required to make this work?

So, just to be sure I understand (I've been hanging back too long while I worked on a took-too-long-project): To go from FCS2 (which I have) and FCP6.x (which I have) is a buy-the-upgrade thing to FCS3 and FCP7? And then, yes, there is an upgrade for FCP7 and FCS3 with includes the point releases, etc. (which is probably what I found and was trying to download).
    does that sound right?

  • FCP X and Professional Audio Post

I use FCS3 and have just bought FCP X, Motion5  and Compressor 4 but I also work as a professional audio sound designer/editor/mixer.
As FCP X won't export to any DAW, not even Apple's, now old, SoundTrack Pro or provide OMF for programs like ProTools what professional post production facility is really going to choose this application for it's workflow.
It may be wonderful for the all-in-one producer for the web but post houses and broadcasters won't be making the jump to this software.
I'm sure Apple will make money selling this to iMovie users who want more but they have totally ignored most of their professional user base with the critical omissions in  this release.

Do you understand what I mean by "split tracks?" A typical delivery for me requires the following isolated split tracks as either a Quicktime file or as stems:  1) mono Dialog, 2) mono VO, 3) mono FX, 4) mono music 5&6) Full Stereo mix, 7&8) a Music and FX stereo mix.  In FCS that was simple. How exactly am I supposed to do that in FCP X with no independent tracks to build on or isolated channels to export out to?
Tell me, how am I supposed to do that?
Man you're so old school it s****. Like dude, who needs that? I do great stuff for YouTube and got paid for my last gig, the guys thought it was great! iDVD OK, but same thing! I'm an f******g pro editor man, and you old guys with your last century ideas need to get a life cos this is where it's all going and you're gonna be toast cos this UI is amazing! What are you on man? FCP X can do sound! Some stuff there about stereo or mono or whatever that I don't get but it works, first time. I brought my last project in and it's all there. Cuts, and wicked FX - the wipe thing I did, all there. This rocks!
OK, I should have un-spellchecked it a little, txted it up a bit...

  • Install order for FCS, FCPX and Lion

    Hi,
I currently have FCS3 and Snow Leopard installed on my iMac with all updates. I want to install FCPX and LION on the same partition as FCS3 so I can still use the other apps.
Should I install FCPX or Lion first, or does it not matter?
    Many thanks

OK - I have both Lion and FCPX on my iMac and it works.  I thought you also wanted to keep Snow Leopard as well.  I use Super Duper to back up my two Macs.  I think I should also have kept a backup coy of Snow Leopard on one back up copy - as I  backed each up AFTER upgrading to LIon!  So far though I really like Lion!  All my problems have been with FCPX.  I am not sure if it worked better on Snow leopard than it does now on LIon.  Others can tell you that
Incidentally, the best advice I have seen is that whilst FCX is on your iMac drive you should not keep all your import files on the internal drive.  I am keeping mine on a 1 TB Firewire 800 Western Digital.  This seems to work fine so far!

  • Can I download and use final cut pro 7 on new mac pro tower?,or I must work with the new final cut pro x only?

can I download and use final cut pro 7 on new mac pro tower?,or I must work with the new final cut pro x only?

Disclaimer: This response assumes that a "new mac pro tower" is the new cylindrical model.
    1. You cannot download Final Cut Pro 7. FCP7 is part of Final Cut Studio (2009) a.k.a "FCS3" and it was only released on a DVD set. It can still be purchased online (maybe even from Apple) for prices ranging from a few hundred to $1K and it is 5 years old and unsupported.
    2. Although there are reports of systems running FCS3 on Mavericks, there are also a host of problems associated with this OS/software combination.
    3. A new version of iMovie Pro Final Cut Pro X has been released which is reportedly very fast and is supported.
It's all a matter of what kind of movies you make...

  • Should I install the extra stuff with FCS3?

    Hi folks,
I've just purchased FCS3 and am wondering about installation. It says the program(s) take up 4GB, and the extra stuff takes up another 46GB. This seems a bit much! My hard drive is only 250 GB, and has only about 60 GB free. Any advice? Should I just install the program(s)? Are there other components I should also install, or should I try to delete enough files to install everything?
    Thanks so much,
    Vixter

It depends on what your needs are. A lot  of the content is Motion, DVD SP, and STP. If you don't need them, save the space and don't install. Otherwise, I'd buy a bigger drive.
    Good luck.

  • Mid-2011 iMac slow after restore

Hello all, thanks for stopping by.
I have  a Mid-2011 12,2 iMac that has been a powerhouse throughout its career. After several large edit projects, no less than 30 full-run shows for national and international broadcast, plus a myriad of other large editorial/graphial projects, I decided it was time to do a complete rebuild and bood to factory settings, seems like a nice way to optimize a system, no?  After cleaning my system drive, erasing it, re-installing Mavericks, and re-installing all NLE software (FCS3 and CC) this machine has gone from hero to zero overnight.  I have never since day one experienced the type of slowdowns that I am now experiencing. For instance, a 45-minute-source encoding into 1080p, 20mbs h.264 through AME would generally take 1.5 hrs. Now, the same export is reporting an 18-hour run time. Similar times with FCP7 and Compressor. There is an exact mirror of this machine running all of the same software and using Mavericks that has not been restored, and it continues to operate at the speeds that I am used to.
If anyone has experienced similar issues, or has any advise, I would be happy to have you join this discussion. And yes, I have turned my machine off and on again, so we are way past anything elementary at this point.
    Many Thanks,
    Dave O'Connor

    More info...
Sample of current export.  These exports are for client review via Vimeo at an increased bitrate of 10 to 20Mbps
17 hours for these settings is not a normal time assessment(taken full course, this media took just over 11 hours to complete).  To rule out Adobe issues, I opened a similar project via FCP with similar settings.
Given the time this ran through FCP when the screenshot was taken, I can see that this would be about an 11 hour process as well.
So I decided to dumb it down some, and tried a 1280 export in AME. Similar slowdown. Here's where the kicker comes in, on one of our other machines, an exact mirror of this machine, running on the same server makes this 1280 pass in less than one hour. The exact same machine.
My colleague suggested a ProRes export, even though those are much larger than necessary for this step.
5 hours is a very long time for such a low compression export.
So I decided to try directly through QuickTime Pro. (v7.6.6). I took a ProRes 422 source file into QT and set to convert to ProRes 422(LT).
Again, given the time of progress, this looks to be about 5 hours to finish.
In Activity Monitor, I have noticed lately, and even before the system restore, that some QT processes were not responding. So I checked on those processes.
These activities shut down during all encoding processes, Final Cut Pro 7, QuickTime 7, and Adobe Media Encoder. The mirror machine, during all similar processes does not report back on any of these QT issues.
I need big help on this one, and may have to move this issue to another area in discussions.
I know 100% that there are no issues with any peripherals on this machine.  The ONLY thing that has changed since I was experiencing smooth working files, is that I restored the machine to factory settings.
Thanks to anyone who can help point me in the right direction.
    Cheers,
    -Dave O'

  • Can't install Final Cut Studio 2 because "PowerPC applications are no longer supported"

Bought a brand new 15" MacBookPro OS X 10.7 2.2Ghz Intel Core i7 and tried to install Final Cut Studio 2. Got the error message "You can't open the application FinalCutStudio.mpkg because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Oh no, does this mean I have to spend more money!???

I'd like to provide an update on this situation in case anyone is in the same boat I am.
I went to the Apple store today. I asked if I could downgrade my operating system. They said no, since it came pre-installed with Lion. I asked if Final Cut Studio 3 was compatible with Lion. They said yes, for the most part. They said there was an issue exporting video in 1080p.
Of course, conveniently Apple is no longer selling FCS3 and the ones on Ebay I saw have gone up to more than $650 a copy. I am out $400 for stupidly buying FCS2 a few months ago, which is now useless to me. I told the Apple guy that I'm not buying FCS X until they work out all the kinks. This leaves me with this laptop that I bought for video editing with no editing software to use.
I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually considering getting Premiere Pro now for Apple, which is supported in Lion and is running a deal for 50% off. (http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/faq.html#lion-os) If Apple doesn't start selling FCS 3 again, they are really not giving me any choice but to switch!

  • Droplet created in 3.0 running now in 3.5 doesn't submit to Batch Monitor?

    I've got a droplet I created in FCS2 (Compressor 3?).
I upgraded to FCS3 and tried to use my droplet.
I get a window with 'Server: This computer - submitting 1 files'
But in the Batch Monitor I never see anything appear under 'This Computer'.
It's just a simple droplet to take a ProRes 422 HQ captured from an HV20 in their 24p in 60i format - that strips out the extra garbage and reverse telecines.
1st time I've tried to use it with Compressor 3.5.
    How can I debug this?

I found the original droplet in my Compressor settings list, and created a new droplet from 3.5.
This time, when I dropped a file on it, it worked.
But - in case I need to convert a droplet from 3.0 to 3.5 (that doesn't exist in Compressor settings), is there a way?

  • Sequence unrendering when external drive is moved

    Hey there,
I'm having difficulty moving a project from one edit suite to another. All of the media and render files are on an external HD. When opened on the originating system, the sequence is fully rendered. When I take the external over to another system, most of the audio and video becomes unrendered. All of the necessary files are on the external, I don't get the missing/unconnected files warning on startup, and all the FCP settings are the same. Re-rendering time is substantial - I need to resolve this for subsequent moves. I'm sharing between two dual-core intel Macpros, external is WD, project is DVCProHD 1080i.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    film_fish wrote:
The sequence is 45 min and very effect heavy. QT exports take 90 minutes or more, even if "self contained" is unselected. If I can't move the project intact, there's no point.
    Thanks anyways!
Wish we had better advice for you or a solution. I just moved a project from my machine to our other FCP machine (FCS3 and OS10.5+) and all of the render files immediately connected so I have nothing helpful to suggest except to check is the system prefs to make sure the render scratch is correctly set. You might change the location deliberately to a weird disk, quit FCP, relaunch, and then reset it.
Hope you get it fixed. If you do, please tell us what you did. Luck.

  • BUG : Compressor 3.5 crashing when adding files?

Fcs 2 worked just fine under tiger.
Now with leo, fcs3 and compressor 3.5 it is impossible to convert (1080p prores/hq) a bigger batch of materiel without compressor crashing.
You can try to add about 45 files (e5markII) but anything over that, the compressor crashes.
Previous version was fine and dandy.
Is this a know bug..sorry... Feature of the 3.5 or what?
    Any workarounds?

I would like to know the answer to this as well.
Having same issue w/ 5DMKII files.
First on a Macbook Pro running FC7 and now on my 8-core power mac.
Trying to throw in about 100 clips into compressor for changing to ProRes, crashes program.
20 or 30 clips works fine...

  • FCP7.03 hangs/freezes while loading project

I have a Final Cut project file for this feature film I've been working on forever. The project has stopped opening. FCP freezes immediately after the 'offline files' dialogue box. (doesn't matter whether I reconnect media or not.) It thinks for a second, then spinning wheel of death for 5 minutes, then it crashes. I get a KGCore error, which FCS Maintenance interprets as 'out of memory.' Obviously this error isn't the cause, but a symptom.
I just got my computer back from the shop, with leopard 10.5.x. After I had installed all my applications / plugins, something happened, where from that point on I'd get the crash I just described. I troubleshot all the applications, plugins, etc. Uninstalled everything and reinstalled it one at a time. I was able to open the project once after a fresh FCP install, then when I tried to open the same project again seconds later, it froze again with the same problem. Then the same crash every time. I updated FCS, and the first time I tried to open the project it worked fine. Seconds later when I tried to replicate the result, I got the exact same crash. From that point on, the project crashed every time. I ran MemTest and it came out good. Also, last week I had my harddrive, superdrive, battery and screen replaced, and everything else passed the Apple Tech's inspection, so I am confident this is not a hardware issue.
So I reformatted the computer -> 10.6.4. I reinstalled FCS3 and CS4 and Magic Bullet looks for FCP & AE. Everything worked perfectly for 3 days. Then last night I installed Automatic Duck Free XML Exporter [FCP] and this afternoon I installed Automatic Duck Pro Import AE [AE]. Now I suddenly I can't open the FCP project again. Exact same error. Freezes immediately after the offline files dialogue box every time. I am able to open other FCP projects though.
Today I tried uninstalling the Free XML exporter, uninstalling Pro Import AE, trashing my preferences, repairing disc permissions, setting my scratch discs to external drives, and I uninstalled and reinstalled CS4 and FCS3 without any plugins. After the fresh install, Final Cut opened the project perfectly the first time, and then gave me exact same crash every subsequent time I opened the project.
I talked to tech support at automatic duck and the guy said the only file that could possibly affect FCP is the xml exporter bundle in final cut pro plugins. It made sense to me that that was the problem, but at this point I've not only uninstalled that plugin to no avail, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled CS4 and FCS3 too, so I'm thinking its something bigger than that.
I can't wrap my head around whats going on. I'd be more than happy to reformat the machine again as long as I know it will work afterwards. I just can't spend days working on this only to have it implode right afterwards.

I have not tried exporting xmls for each sequence. Its a good last resort for sure, but the thing is that this project is huge. Including the sequence backups for my rough cut and fine cut (which I really don't need), there's got to be 600+ sequences.
I can't figure out how to post attachments here, so I'm including a segment of the 3 crash logs my machine's generated since the last reformat. Please advise on the protocol for posting crash logs. Thanks.
