Fear losing content on iPod if add more

My brother gave me his 3rd generation iPod as a gift. He had lots of great music on it. I want to add more music from iTunes but friends tell me if I synch with iTunes, the previously downloaded music will be lost. what can I do to keep his music but add my own? thanks!

You can change it to manual update. You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Once the iPod is safely mounted check the "manually manage music and videos" box in the iPod Summary Tab then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Do I have to delete all of my songs on my iPod to add more?

I had to restore my laptop to get rid of a virus and it deleted my iTunes library. So when I tried to put more songs up there it said I had to delete all of my songs that are already on my iPod besides the ones purchased through iTunes. Is there a way I can keep the songs already on there?
Also another question. My laptop still wont work so i have it always on Safe Mode w/ Networking and it says I cant use my iPod on iTunes at that moment. But it does it all the time. Any way I can use it?
Any help or suggestions will help. Thanks!

"so the songs are only on the iPod now."
Not good at all.. You should always have a backup copy.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases.
You can try a forum search as this is asked and answered often.  There are some third party programs ( not supported by Apple) that you can try at your risk.

You should take the time to familiarize yourself with the documentation that is available.  You can "uncheck" a song in iTunes, and then do a manual update.

  • When I connect my iPod to my computer the AutoPlay window opens up and it doesn't give me the option of choosing iTunes. I want to add more music but all it gives me the option to do it put pictures my computer.

Hi, for some reason I can't add more music to my iPod and it doesn't give me the choice of choosing iTunes to show my iPod. I want to add more music but all it gives me the option to do it put pictures my computer. I really need help and I have no clue what to do. Please help me

Try using RecBoot to kick it out of recovery mode. If that does not work, try a manual install, as outlined in link below. If it STILL keeps entering recovery mode, you most likely need a new logic board.

  • How can I add more memory to my iPod touch

How can I add more memory to my iPod touch?

You are not able to add memory to a iPod Touch.
The only way to get more memory is to buy one with a larger capacity.

  • I have a new computer, and I downloaded a new iTunes for my iPod, but it only transferred my Purchased Songs to my Library, not the other mp3s. Now when I go to add more mp3s and sync, it will add it to my Library, but not my iPod itself... What happened?

I want to add more songs, but I cannot figure out how to sync my iPod to actually transfer my mp3s. I had done it before, which is how I have most of my songs, but I don't know what I can do without totally erasing everyhing and starting over... Which I don't want to do, because I have a new computer and no old files. I'll have to do that if worst comes to worst, I guess. Hoping there's some other way around it.

You can only synce an iPod to one iTunes Library/one computer.  However, you can manage music among different computer . see:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
If you want to transfer non-iTunes purchased music from an iPod to a computer other than the one you synced the music from you need to use a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • I upgraded to iTunes 11.0. My iPod Nano 4th Version will sync, but music and playlists will not appear to manage and add more songs. Is there a fix?

If I go from 'Devices' to Summary and then Music, I only get one option-Sync Music,There is a box on this page but the options within it are grayed out. If I tick the Sync Music option I get this message-
'Are you sure you want to remove existing music, films, ect, from this ipod and sync with this itunes library?
'Music synced to (my ipods name) from other itunes libraries will be removed and items will be synced from this itunes library' I have only ever used itunes on this PC and the 'Manually manage music and videos' is ticked but
that must be a default setting as I haven't ticked it.

  • Every time I try to get on the ipod, it says I have to add more security questions, but none are listed, just two buttons that say submit.

Every time I try to get on the Ipod games, it says I have to add more security questions, but no questions are listed, just two buttons that say "Submit" and places to put the answers to the unstated questions.  It also asks for a second email address.  It then proceeds to lock up.  Is this a scam of some sort.  There is nothing on the apple website about having additional security questions other than the one, or having a second email to operate the ipod.

You need to contact Apple to get the questions reset. Click here, phone them, and ask for the Account Security team, or fill out and submit this form.
Whichever method you use, you probably won't get a response until the 26th. If you absolutely must make a purchase before then, create a new Apple ID; you won't be able to transfer previous purchases or iTunes Store credit to it.

  • HT1399 my ipod says i got alot of my memory used up under other and i would like to know how to delete it so i can add more music

My ipod says i got alot of my memory used up under other and i would like to know how to delete thid stuff so i can add more songs.

You need to delete the music you got from your friend. You fried does not have the licence/right to give you a copy of it.
I would restore the iPod from a backup on your computer and sync your own media to the iPod.

  • TS1363 when I plug in my IPOD into my computer to add more songs, my computer, nor itunes recognizes the IPOD.

i can know longer see my IPOD connected to my computer.  My IPOD is functioning fine... even can play on my docking system.  Trying to add more songs.

  • Can I add more storage to my 4th generation 8gb Ipod touch?

How can I increase the storage of my 4th generation 8gb ipod touch?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Unfortunately, you can't add more storage to an iPod touch after buying it. If you bought it less than 14 days ago, you can return it and buy a 32 GB iPod touch

  • No Content in iPod part of iPhone after syncing with OS 3.1 and iTunes 9

My iPhone was working fine and I upgraded to iTunes 9 and OS 3.1 and then all of the sudden no Content in iPod part of iPhone after syncing. It shows the music there as far as the capacity is concerned but nothing shows up on the phone. I turned off Sync Music and my podcasts and movies then appear on my iPhone but when I try to Sync Music again it blanks. I then tried only select playlists which seemed to work except when I went to add the largest playlist then No Content error again on my iPhone.

    Same problem here.
I had my contents playing from the application iPod in my newly "clean" updated iPhone 3G, then I downloaded 3 podcasts from the iTunes Store in my iphone over wifi and the next time I launched "iPod" the screen read "Updating library" and then only the 3 new podcasts were shown no other contents is available, and the information menu from the settings reads 0 songs but the available disk space is relevant with the songs still being on the iPhone.
In addition, I have to say that iPod, especially the podcasts section, felt more sluggish than on the previous version.
I look forward to a fix.
    Best regards,

  • (Content Lock) - (iPod Pics)

I have a question. How can i lock the contents of the iPod ??? Because if i sync my iPod with itunes, and if the playlist is empty it will delete all of my melodies and all of my videos. How can i do this ??
Question no. 2. How can i upload pics into my iPod ??? and if i can do this... can i set them as a wallpaper ??? pls help

If you set your iPod to manually update, it will do that. If you connect your iPod to an empty iTunes music library, iTunes will not erase the music on the iPod. The music on the iPod will stay on the iPod (even though it is not in iTunes) and then you can add more music.
If you do that though, make sure to back up your music...
Buegie: Backup iTunes Music Files and Database
It is fine to manually update. After you format your PC, you may want to use software to move the music back onto your computer so that your music is on your computer and your iPod. This is safer and makes updating your iPod easier.

    iTunes 6.0.4
