Fear the worst. Strange marks on display

Hi,
2005 iMac (PPC) on 10.5.8. When viewing a picture in Preview or iPhoto get this strange column-like hatching effect on screen. Also, occasionally the whole display freaks out and looks like a dog's (cat's?) regurgitated breakfast, until a restart which seems to right things for a while. Afraid the graphics card is heading south, can anyone confirm please? Is it fixable or am I looking at a hole in my wallet? Many thanks for any any advice :-)
Dave

You may have a problem with the video chip.
Here is how to tell...
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Bootup will be longer.
Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.
An article on how to boot into safe mode.

Runs OK in safe mode...
Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.

  • Strange marks underneath display. Damaged pixels?

My MacBook Pro's display has got some white marks in it. They are only visible when the screen is displaying dark colors. No matter how much you zoom in it will always be there. I suspect some of the pixels are damaged? Please help!

Help is at the Apple store or an AASP. Make an appointment.

  • I fear the worst

Several weeks ago, I started noticing an occasional buzzing noise from the left-front corner of my iBook, which I now suspect is a tell-tale sign of impending hard disk failure. This behavior was shortly followed by the consistent rejection of cds and dvds...literally spitting them right back out.
This afternoon, the whole thing crashed. The only way to get the iBook to restart is by pressing the power button. The screen lights up gray, no apple, goes black, and then this is replaced by the dreaded flashing question mark. After a few minutes, this too disappears and the iBook shuts down.
Clearly, I cannot reboot from any cd/dvd for diagnostic purposes.
Assuming I am a procrastinator who hasn't backed up in a while (true), I fear my iBook data is lost irretrievably lost. Is there some way to transfer the iBook data to my iMac? Y'know, that's probably a stupid question, but since I've been banging my head on the desk for the past few hours, I'm not really thinking clearly. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Steve

    Conditional "yes".
If you are able to boot iBook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, and if the iMac supports firewire there is a good chance you can rescue your data.
    Here's how:
    •Connect both computers via firewire.
    •Start up iMac
•Hit power on iBook and immediately after chime hold down "T" key. The firewire symbot should flash on the screen, and in a while the iBook's HDD should then appear on iMac desktop as a firewire disk.
•Backup your Users Folder using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. CCC allows you to backup a single folder if you need to, SD allows you to clone the entire HDD or the Users folder. If you do not have sufficient space on the iMac's HDD you can create a compressed disk image with either of these utilities.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers.

  • Constant crashes -Fearing the worst

My MacBook (2007) started crashing (shutting down on itself) last night. I'm able to login but no more than 2 minutes after which I get the dialogue 'Are You Sure You Want To Restart You Computer?' Regardless what I click (if I have time to do so), it simply shuts down.
    I've tried the following:
    -log in as Guest
    -disconnected all USB peripherals/cables
    -safe boot
    -disconnect router
    -zapping pram
-re-seated ram sticks (2x1Gb) (also tried one stick at a time and switching them)
-and the big one: Booting from Install Disc!!! (10.6)
All of the above didn't help. The computer simply crashes within 2 minutes of booting up.
It also doesn't recognize my external hard drive with bootable backup.
Am I in trouble? Is there something else I haven't tried?
note: while booting from Install disc I only go as far as being able to go to Disk Utility before the crash. I'm almost tempted to try and continue with the install process.
    Thanks much.

  • How do I change the default from"Mark message as read by date" to "Mark message as read"?

When I migrated from Windows XP to Windows 7 I downloaded & installed a new version of Thunderbird (v4.10.2) and retrieved my Mail files to the new profile. Everything seems to be working properly except that whenever I close an open message I get the "Mark messages as read by date" popup which has the current date but wants me to specify a starting date. This didn't happen in my previous installations (I've used Thunderbird for years). Options / Advanced / Reading & Display has "Automatically mark messages as read" checked and "Immediately on display" set, but I haven't found anything that lets me choose "Mark as read" rather than "Mark as read by date". How do I turn the "by date" off?
    Thanks --

'Mark Message as read by Date'
This can be invoked by right click on email in list and select 'Mark' > 'As read by date' to invoke the 'Mark Message as read by Date' pop up window.
If you are reading an email in either the Message Pane or in a new tab and press the 'C' key, this will open the 'Mark Message as read by Date' pop up window.
So can you tell us exactly how you are ''closing'' a previously unread message.
Do you select an email in the list so that it displays in the Message Pane? Then you do not need to close it because this will auto happen when you select another email in the list.
OR do you double click to open an email in a tab. Then how do you close it? There are some options on how to do this:
    # Do you click on the small 'x' located in the tab?
    # do you use 'Ctrl'+'W' ?
    # Do you right click on tab to show drop down options and then press 'C' key?
I notice that there is a similar action - pressing of 'C' key.
If you do not right click to get drop down, but instead just use 'C' key, you will invoke the 'Mark Message as read by Date' window.
Can you check what it is you are doing

  • The boxes representing my screen displays in arrangement tab are missing

Hey guys, the blue boxes that represent the two displays that i have are missing in the arrangement tab.  my computer will not let me move my cusor between the monitors, but i still see my desktop backround.  and if I turn on mirroring it works fine.  anyone know how to fix this?   thanks

Click "View" in the Menu Bar at the top of your Firefox window, if there is no check mark next to "Status Bar", click on "Status Bar" to place a check mark. Did that solve your problem?
<u>'''Can't see the Menu Bar'''</u> (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help)?
Turning the Menu Bar on and off is a new feature in version 3.6.
''(Linux & OSX see: [[Menu bar is missing]] )''
<u>''Windows'' Method 1.</u> '''''Hold down''''' the key and press the following letters in this exact order: V T M
<u>''Windows'' Method 2.</u> Press and release the key. The Menu Bar will be displayed; then choose ~~red:V~~iew > ~~red:T~~oolbars and click on ~~red:M~~enu Bar.
The Menu Bar should now be displayed permanently, unless you turn it off again using View > Toolbars. Check mark = displayed, NO check mark = not displayed.
    See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Menu+bar+is+missing
<u>'''Navigation Toolbar, Bookmarks Toolbar and other Toolbars'''</u> under View > Toolbars. Clicking on one of them will place a check mark (display) or remove the check mark (not displayed).
<u>'''To display the Status Bar'''</u>, View, then click Status bar to place a check mark (display) or remove the check mark (not displayed).

  • Strange mark on my screen

Just noticed a strange marking on my screen when it is turned off, I've tried to clean it off with various products, but it appears to be grease-proof.
Anyone know what it might be or how I might go about getting rid of it?

  • Do macs use the worst dvd drives???

this is just a question because i have noticed that a lot of DVDs that i burn on my mac play in my home DVD player, through my lacie external DVD drive and/or my friends PC work perfectly but they wont play in my iMac G5 or my MacBook Pro DVD player.
PS. the DVDs that i use are verbatim 99% of the time. and a lot of the problems are with dual layer DVDs.
PSS. please dont confuse my question with "macs DO use the worst DVD drives" as a statement. i do not mean it that way at all. thank you.

  • Strange marks during reading Rs232 buffer

Everything looks correct, the device is answering, but during reading a feedback message i receive a strange marks(attached jpg). I wrote adequate software in c# to have sure the external equipment is available, it works. So i checked if in my .vi are any bytes in the received buffer of Rs232, yes they are...So the problem is in LABView. Does anyone have had the same situation?
I am wondering if there is no any problem with fonts or something?

You should only be configuring your port once.  That should be done before this loop.  By configuring the port inside of the loop, you are reinitializing that port with every call.  That could cause weird things while the configuring is happening.
You should probably have a wait sometime between your write and your read to allow your device to respond.
Is your device sending an End Of Line character at the end of each message?  If so, get rid of the "Bytes At Port" propery node.  Just tell the read to read something really large.  It will automatically stop reading when that End of Line character is found.  If it isn't sending that character, you should disable that with the Configure Serial Port (that you should have BEFORE that loop).

  • Strange marks in page list

This is my list of pages in a book of over 150 pages. In the pages list I have these strange marks indicated by arrows. Anyone know what they are and how did I get them?

Sorry to keep going on about this but I would like to find out more. I have checked other Indesign files with section breaks but they do show these marks. Also the file that shows the marks in the pages list has a square bracket around pp xii-1. Hope the image will show you this.

  • Strange marks on Curve 8900 screen

    Hi folks,
I hope someone can help me out. I have a new blackberry 8900 javelin (have like 4 months of use) and some strange marks appeared on the screen. They are small marks, but they don't disappear. I had the same problem with my last curve 8900 (I had 3 8900 models) but last time, the marks disappeared in a few days. Those on mine are not disappearing. I know it's not a liquid crystal leak, it's a malfunction or something, because the mark had a different shape in a few days ago. Here are some pictures i took to show the problem.
hope someone can help me out!
    thanks guys!

    Hey eduardopfm,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
Those marks are definitely hardware/lcd screen related.  I would suggest contacting your network service provider or point of sale for repair options as this is not software related.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please.

Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please. I've already tried a lot of your suggested fixes, but without success. Why hasn't Apple Fixed this?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • 60-minute recorded program stops at the 49-minute mark

On Tuesday, our DVR (QIP2708)- recorded a regularly-scheduled show from 8:00 to 9:00. In the DVR's recorded programs, it showed as 59 minutes, 45 seconds (roughly). Watched the show until about the 49-minute mark, but the recording stopped abruptly and returned to the DVR menu. Hitting "resume playback" results in the last 2-3 seconds playing, then it just returns to the menu.
I tried fast-forwarding and skipping to the end, with no positive result. Once it gets to this 49-minute mark, it just stops, even though the progress bar shows a 59-minute recording. I manually reset the STB with no luck. Even tried watching on a remote STB but the result was the same. There's no error message displayed; the recording just stops.
It seems, just before the issue happens at the 49-minute mark, that the recorded program starts "skipping frames". I'd almost say that the video frames are "out of sync".
We had no power outage on Tuesday, and as far as I know, everything "FiOS" was working fine, as we were watching another program at the time this recording was taking place and we're constantly using a PC someplace in the house. I'm suspecting the recorded file is just corrupt, but I'm wondering if anybody else has seen this problem....?
I can go back and finish watching the show via the broadcast network's online library, but feel I shouldn't have to do that. I'm also wondering if this is indicative of a hard-drive problem in the DVR. (Certainly, if it appears more often, I'll request a replacement.)
    Any insight greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Now is this the only program where you've experienced this issue? Can you test a few other programs and see if you get similar results? If the problem is on-going, then yes we can easily ship you out a replacement DVR. It's possible the channel had an outage and went off the air for a short bit aswell so could be a freak occurance.

  • Has anyone taken the glass off a glossy display?

I'm looking to buy an iMac, but do not care for the glossy screen. I noticed a reference in another thread about someone taking the glass off in a youtube video and watched that.
So, has anyone taken the glass off successfully and is happy with the result?

Well, having over 15 years experience with Apple Computers, the Glossy Screen is the stupidest and most irresponsible idea ever. So what HP, Compaq, Dell and the like decided Gloss was all the craze!...
Apple should know better than to jump on the bandwagon by now being the trend setters they have ALWAYS been. Apple should offer the option the way they do with their Laptops so one can choose if they want glossy or matt. Being a color correction expert, the gloss is just the icing on the doodoo brown cake for the 20" Aluminum iMac TN Displays. Either way you cut it, garbage is garbage and covering it up with something that adds blinding glare is just that... A cover up.
I was one of the first schmucks who bought one of these 20-inchers and it is the sole Apple computer purchase I've regretted from day one. Sure it looks pretty and all and is quite elegant but make no mistake about it... the Aluminum iMacs fall FAR short of Apples mark ranking right down in the gutter with the disaster that was the Quadra series before Mr. Jobs came back to Apple and cleaned house.
If anyone wants to buy mine I'll let it go stacked with all the software & 3 Gigs of Ram for $1,000.00 shipped!
