Feathered selection + Levels = Transparency?

Hi! I've been trying to create a vignette on a picture by creating a circular selection, then feather it and invert it. I then use levels to darken it a bit, but as long as I've feathered the selection I get a transparent path along the selection, making me see the layer beneath. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong. I've used this effect in regular Photoshop and there it works fine. Thanks in advance, Ronny

Might be a bug; I can repro.
Steps:
Circle Selection Tool > make a selection on the image.
Selection settings > Feather > adjust settings > Apply
Adjustments > Levels > play with the levels

Feathered selection, transparency, mask question

1) On a transparent canvas, fill a feathered selection at 100% opacity.
2) Cmd-click layer icon to load the selection (of the pixels).
3) Add its Layer Mask.
When I Enable/Disable the Layer Mask, the pixels change (the border changes).
This does not happen when a similar selection is made on a non-transparent canvas.
What is going on with the transparency and the Mask that I am missing? That is, why does Mask change the image?

Michael has some good insight into this.
No matter what, these topics are definitely hard to grasp and I too have struggled with how does all the transparency, selections, layer masks, alpha channels all work together (or not) and the differences between all these names and their function. My experience is how learning works for one person may do nothing for another. Thought I would give it a shot based on my understanding. Sorry if this is wordy yet you ask very good and tough questions.
First for the Transparency/Opacity
When you create a feathered selection and fill it over a transparent background you effectively have created a transparency mask for that layer right within the artwork. The fuzzy edge is the transition from full 100% opacity (transparency = 0) within the red square to 0% opacity outside the square (transparency=100%). This defines one of the two transparency masks that each level can have. The transparency mask does not get a lot of press because a thumbnail for it does not show up anywhere. The second mask is the Layer Mask. The total opacity is determined by multiplying the Layer Mask with the Transparency Mask (ignoring the opacity/fill sliders and Blending Options). The effective total opacity for the layer is seen as familiar checkerboard pattern.
When you pressed CMD (Ctrl on PC) and clicked the artwork thumbnail, you pulled up the transparency mask up as a selection (I'll talk about the marching ants and the hard edge it portrays later on). By copying this selection into the Layer Mask you now have effectively double masked your artwork (Layer Mask X Transparency Mask). The transparency mask still sits within the artwork and is now duplicated as a Layer Mask. This will make the total mask look like it has shrunk. Why?.... Right in the middle of the transition edge of either mask you will have 50% opacity. When you double up on the masks that same point will now have 50% x 50% = 25% opacity. The bottom line is the the opacity edge will go through a steeper and faster transition when you have this doubling up of masks.
If that is not what you want there are several ways to avoid this
1) Just don't use a layer mask since the red object is already created with a smooth transparent edge within a transparent field (why do you want the layer mask?)
2) Create the initial selection with a hard edge, move it into a layer mask, select it and then Select>Refine Edge for the Layer Mask to create a smooth transition.
Either way you won't double up on the masks.
Selection Mask
The selection mask is its own beast and not associated with any particular layer. Think of it as a mask that hovers over the entire layer stack and that it can be applied to whichever layer is active (highlighted). The selection mask with its marching ants gives the impression that it has a hard edge. This is misleading because anytime you have any feathering you are creating a mask with a gradual transition or a mask that on the edges has partial opacity/transparency. Almost all the selection tools have the ability to do feathering.
Unfortunately tyring to represent the mask edge is problematic when it is not a sharp transition. The marching ants just represents the point in the feathering where the partial transparency of the selection =50%. When you have no feathering the edge is sharp and the marching ants are exactly right on top of that edge. Other than that, the marching ants are somewhere in the middle of the edge transistion.
Clear as mud right?

Why can I not select the transparency flattener preset option when exporting to a pdf?

Hi all,
I have not had to use this option in quite a while so may have forgotten a few things.
In InDesign, under Edit>Transparency Flattener Presets, I have created a new preset and included the option of converting all text to outlines.
However, when I try to export to a PDF, the option to select a transparency flattener preset is greyed out.
Can you tell me what I may be doing wrong? This is driving me crazy!:(
(There was originally no transparency in the file, so I created some with a white square set to 0.5% opacity).

How to make start and end curve pieces of selected tab transparent in custom theme in FF33?

I created my own theme using a background image but it seems I cannot code it right in browser.css to make the start and end curve pieces of selected tab transparent. They remain colored, I guess using the operating system's (which is Win XP) dialog color. The middle piece is fine, though, as well as the hovering.
I built my theme based on https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Building_a_Theme but customised it.
Your answer would be highly appreciated!

Query selected levels of multiple hierarchies of one dimension

Hi to all.
I have created through AWM 11 a customer dimension with two hierarchies as follows.
SLM_HIER: All Customers -> Salesman -> Customer
GEO_HIER: All Customers -> State -> City -> Customer
I have also created a SALES_CUBE (measures: QUANTITY, VALUE, aggregation: SUM) that is dimensioned with Customer dim.
I'm using OBIEE to query the OLAP engine (through the relational views that AWM created automatically). I have followed the OTN OBE tutorials.
I would like to have the following query on the cube:
Give me QUANTITY where SALESMAN=S1 and CITY in ('Athens','Rome').
Is it possible to have such a query? As far as I understand there are no ready aggregated data for selected levels of both hierarchies.

I think OBIEE would also give you your answer from OLAP.
This query has filters defined from both the hierarchies and hence OBIEE would (should) automatically service this query from the highest common level b/w the hierarchies (in this case: base/leaf level - Customer). As a result of this, if CUST is your Customer dimension, OBIEE (at least, the older style of obiee modeling with olap) would introduce the security filter CUST_LEVEL = 'Customer'. Granularity of the resultset returned would be per individual Customer. 1 record per Customer satisfying the criteria SALESMAN='S1' and CITY in ('Athens','Rome').
Ideally you should include the Cust Id, Quantity columns in your obiee answers report and use an internal answers object/view like a Pivot View to hide Customer details column and get a localized aggregation performed over the resultset returned from OLAP to get the consolidated Quantity. Answers table has data at Customer level, Answers Pivot can show the required result.
Note1: The Cube cannot have this result pre-calculated since its a contradictory combination of filters across hierarchies. Level specific aggregate values calculated (or pre-calculated) in the cube for Salesman level (h1) would contain Customers from all cities (h2) and similarly City level (h2) Aggregates would contain Customers of all Salesmen (h1).
Note2: I believe OBIEE modeling with OLAP suffers from some issues relating to multiple hierarchies (e.g: if you have filter from non-default hierarchy CITY in ('Athens','Rome') alone, i think it would still fetch the results from lowest common level Customer instead of from City level directly).

How to make a selection partially transparent?

Hi. I open a jpg image in PS, use a quick selection tool to select what I want and then I'd like to make that selection 80% transparent. How do I do that?

One way is to convert the background layer to a regular layer, add a layer mask after making the selection, invert the layer mask and use the masks panel to control the transparency (density setting) of the selection.

Query Issue with select level from dual

Hi,
I have a question regarding this query. The problem seems that when selecting level from dual while including another table the rows returned seem to increase exponentially.
I can add distinct and get the correct number of rows but am worried that this will cause a possible performance issue. Am I using the level option wrong?
I have included details below.
There are 4 rows in tbl_incidents
When I run the following queries I get rows returned based on the total number of rows
select start_date + level - 1, tbl_incidents.incident_id, level

returns 1 row
select start_date + level - 1, tbl_incidents.incident_id, level
from dual, tbl_incidents

     r being the number of rows in tbl_incidents and
     l being the number used in the connect by for level and
     q being the number of rows returned by the query
     it appears that
q(l) = r * q(l-1) + 1
level 2:     4 * 1 + 1 = 5
level 3:     4 * 5 + 1 = 21
level 4:     4 * 21 + 1 = 85
level 5:     4 * 85 + 1 = 341

Generating a "counter table" of the integers 1, 2, 3,..., X is an example

Cannot select through transparency in .png

Hi,
I'm new to Edge Animate, coming from a Flash background.
While working on a simple (rough) image gallery to try out Edge. I noticed an issue of not being able to select through the transparency of a png image.
My gallery has the buttons under the knockouts of the Nav Bar frames. I noticed the png was the issue after I checked all the code and tested the gallery with the Nav Bar temporally deleted and the buttons worked.
My work around will be to Photoshop the button images to fit over the Nav Bar openings.
Just wanted to bring up this issue because I'm not sure if it's a bug or normal for Edge.

You're not doing anything wrong - PNGs by nature don't allow you to click through the transparent spots. The whole image is considered an element. This isn't a limitation of Animate, it's just how HTML works.
There is one thing you can try to have the cursor ignore the entire image. Enter this in your compositionReady event for the stage:
sym.$("pictureName").css("pointer-events","none");
...and change pictureName to the name of your element as it appears in the elements panel.
Caveat emptor, this technique doesn't work in IE.

Selections & Levels Adjustment Layer Not Working Properly

Hello,
I'm experiencing something that I've never encountered before. I’ve used the selection function and levels adjustment layer hundreds of times and I’ve never ever seen this...
When I make a selection (in this case the signatures on the attached image) and then darken that selection using a levels adjustment layer, some of the surrounding information is changing/darkening as well. This should not be happening.
What's the fix?

The solution I already gave you is valid, and works to modify your existing method, depending on your Quick Mask setting. Rather than reject it out of hand, I suggest you use it.
The problem is that I've performed this procedure hundreds of times before, using the very same steps below, and this particular oddity has never happened, until now.
If you have selected different Eyedropper settings (Range for example), or the image has even slightly different tonal or colour characteristics to normal, your method will not always work. Your method is too crude. In particular the need to alter the selection using the Marquee selection tool, suggests that some knowledge is required.
There are better methods that will produce perfect masks - using Calculations, channel operations, or even the new Refine Edge command. You probably don't even need selections at all to do this, because Curves and Advanced Blending Options could be used instead.

Sql dev overrides the default and fetches 50 (1.0) or 100 (1.1) rows at a time. In 1.1 this is configurable.

That statement is absurd. So, if someone tells you a way to write your query that it allows it to run faster, you wouldn't care? You should hate some SQL, some of it is pure crap and needs to be rewritten. This is what we call 'junk code'. As a developer, your goal should be to write maintainable code. In short, if you have the choice between something that looks fancy and something that is legible and maintainable, choose the maintainability. Sorry, but if I ever saw that statement in a code review I would have made you rewrite it. Also, anything that runs differently on different databases should be avoided, its that simple.

Adj. audio levels - transparent to DVD Studio Pro

I've reviewed posts about audio levels and I understand it must be done outside DVD Studio Pro. I've run into several work-flow bumps that pose these questions...
When I use an app to raise or lower the audio level when I "Save As" or export to match the original parameters (48k, 16bit, Stereo, big endian) DVD Studio Pro will reject the new file (that has been used in the project already) with this error msg.... "file no longer uses a supported graphics format"
What is the fastest and most transparent way to change audio levels? (to aviod this rejection by DVD Studio Pro?) Ideally one would simply "Save" after the adjustment vs Save As or export.
On a related score, other apps allow you to substitute assets. So provided the running time and basic (audio) parameters are the same, can one do this in DVD Studio Pro?
In my haste for a solution in a simple dvd demo reel I was making I was willing to trash the pair of quicktime files (m2 & aiff) after manually purging them form the project, then re-importing and reassigning a new pair that included the adjusted audio. Even in a simple project this workaround was no fun. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

As this "imported" file is the only thing in it, I'm not sure what multitrack means in this example but I'll experiment. When you say "editor in a new tab" I wish I understood what this "editor" tab is as it does not appear in the pdf manual. Is there another name for this tab-window? Exporting the multitrk proj would put me in the same mismatch pickle I was in to start with.

This is strange. Are you viewing it in a "multitrack"
project? Once double-clicked on, the file should open
in the editor under a new tab, which has the same
name as the file. In this editor you can perform
whatever is necessary. If this continues to fail, try
exporting the multitrack project with the same name
and file type as the original to replace it. That
will work also. Hope it works this time.

Selective color transparency

Hi
I'm drawing some rectangles on a background that has 2 colors. I want one of the colors in the background to show up through the rectangle, but not the other. Is there any way to do this? i.e. I want to make my rectangle transparent for some backgrounds but not for others.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

not quite - I've got a grid in the back ground with lines of different colors (say gray and blue). I then stick a filled bright yellow rectangle on top of it. The parts of the rectangle that overlap the gray lines need to stay yellow, while the parts that overlap the blue lines need to show up darker.
i.e. opaque for some colors in the background and translucent/transparent for others.

CS6 Photoshop Problem? Grey/Black Halo around feathered transparency??

Is anyone aware of a gray/black halo around feathered transparency objects. The halo occurs where the solid area of pic feathers to the transparent.
NOTE: Image looks fine in Photoshop(CS6) but when placed in Indesign (CS5) a black halo appears on page
This only happens when image is an RGB Tiff and layer mask is used to create transparency. If image is saved as .psd then it is fine. Also when RGB tiff is converted to CMYK then this is also ok.
I kook forward to anyone's suggestions.
Ideally I could just start using psd format, but I have to handle alot of images that are already in RGB tiff and it is time consuming to have to open and re-save all of these.
Adobe Guys, what have you done!! Photoshop CS5 RGB tiffs are still working fine. Please help me!!??

Selecting Color Balance adjustment layer brings up Levels adjustment layer

Ok, so, all of a sudden I cannot get a color balance adjustment layer to come up. Every time I do photoshop creates a levels layer. Selecting levels makes a levels layer. All of the other adjustment layers seem to be working normally. How do I fix this? I have a deadline and no time to be reinstalling photoshop.

Reinstalling the application seldom helps, and re-installing without trashing your preferences is futile as you end up right where you started.
