Feature Request - Import ITunes m4p into Track

Would like a feature that allowed moving an entire ITunes song into a GB track.
933 MHz PowerPC G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That's not likely to be a feature you'll ever see B-(>
(BTW, Apple doesn't read these forums, so the GB team won't see a feature request posted here)

• Feature request: Importing/backup/archive of tracks with metadata

Hi everyone,
I've found that one of the things iTunes does better than any other music player is handling and organising song information. Have you ever seen a PC user's jukebox? Thos things are a real mess, with cryptic track names ("mike mills - air - talkie walkie - 05"), artists in the album column, etc...
All of this information which describes the file itself is called "meta-data", and iTunes handles meta-data in two seperate places: the song file itself (ID3 tags in MP3s, for instance) and the iTunes library file.
You'll notice that when you drag a music file from one iTunes library to another, the meta-data stored in the file itself is preserved (artist, title, track number, etc...), while the meta-data stored in the iTunes library isn't (your rating, the play count, the last date played, etc...).
What I'm suggesting here is a feature that allows one to:
(a) make a folder / burn a disk with the song files AND a special iTunes meta-data (XML?) file, so that all meta-data is preserved,
(b) optionally delete the music files from your library after backup (i.e. archiving), and naturally,
(c) open and read backup/archive folders and disks, and allow one to reintegrate songs, playlists or the entire collection back into one's main music library.
I hope Apple is listening, because I think this feature would be really easy to implement, and would make a lot of people (especially those who keep their music spread across 2 or more computers) very happy!
I've already set up a smart playlist ("Give me 4.5 GiB of disabled (unchecked) tracks from my library, sorted by least recently added") that gives me the candidates for archival. Now, all I'm hoping for is a button that allows me to archive (move) everything to a DVD, clear some space on my PowerBook hard drive and rest assured that if I ever want to go back and retrieve a track, it'll be waiting, with the playcounts, song information and ratings all intact!
...either that or make all hard drives at least 1000 times bigger. I'm not picky.
Cheers,
- tonyboy

Thank you for an idea!
I wrote a simple script to get metadata from files and offset AE clip times respectively. It is quite dirtycoded but does the job for me. Maybe someone will want to use this script, so I put it on a public accessible URL: http://zig-zag.ru/usefulshit/ae/xmp_time_shifter.jsx
My workflow is as follows:
- I separate camera footages (.mov, .jpg, etc...), and put them to folders like camera_01, camera_02 etc
- create new project in AE, new composition - named "camera_01_p1", import files from camera_01 folder to a project panel, drag'n'drop them to a compo, select "camera_01_p1" compo and run xmp_time_shifter.jsx
- I have 8 hours of footage, so I duplicate "camera_01_p1" composition, name it "camera_01_p2", delete all layers but unshifted ones, rerun time shifter script, repeat with the rest
- do the same with camera_02 (don't forget to adjust still photo layer duration before time shifting)
- export to a premiere project (yeah, thank you for this one!)
- then I open project in premiere, copy everything to a same sequence (different layers where needed)
- last thing is to sync entire video and photo layers at some known moment - it is done easily by placing marker at some time feature on different video/audio clips, and manually shifting entire layer to sync
- profit!
Since we are allready offtopic to premiere, I place some of my notes here:
- XMPFile function does not read files like "/d/path" on my windows 7, so I replaced them with "d:/"
- don't understand why, but this check - if(fname != null){ is not working. So script will fail on compositions with solid, null, etc. layers.
- I wrote simple date parser that is currently working with Nikon D3 (.jpg) and Canon 5D mk2 (.mov) but it can fail on some other models/formats.

• Feature request: import/copy locked photos only

the option to "import/copy locked photos only" (files that have been locked/tagged by camera) would be helpfull.

I'm sure I've seen that request over on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked, but I can't find it right now. That would be the best place to add your vote or request as this forum will be closed once the beta's over.

• Feature request : import of multi-line notes in CSV or tab-delimited file

This is a feature request to the AddressBook development team:
Following a question posted here and asked to support (thanks to Barry and Julia from ADC), it turns out that AddressBook is not ready yet to import multi-line notes from a CSV or tab-delimited file.
I would like to kindly suggest the AddressBook development team to update the import methods for such flat files to parse the text of what is assigned to the Notes field, and convert documented escape sequences to their pre-determined corresponding special character.
I would think that the following would be pretty easy to implement, and easy for the targeted audience (enthousiasts power-users and up) to remember:
"\n " : mark a new line (same as ^p in Word)
"\t " : replace by a tab
I would keep the trailing space to avoid problems with DOS-type file path problems.
and of course...
"\\n " and "\\t " for whoever would want to import notes about \n and \t
For example, in a Notes column, the text:
"Escape sequence \\n :\n move the text to a new line\n \n while escape sequence \\t :\t move the text to the next horizontal tab"
would give the following (just consider text between <Note> marks):
<Note>
Escape sequence \n:
move the text to a new line
while escape sequence \t: move the text to the next horizontal tab
</Note>
Thanks for reading...

The developers do not necessarily read these USER discussion pages. If you want to make suggestions and know they will be read (which is at least a step towards implementation) use the OS X feedback page.

• Feature request for iTunes: Rating from iPod to Library.

I'm not able to send feature requests via the 'Provide iTunes feedback'. So I'm posting here. I use my iPod more often to listen to music than my computer. I don't have time to sit at my machine and rate files. But My commute is an hour so I've got a LOT of time on the train & bus to rate my songs as I listen to them. However when I plug in my iPod to update it, etc. the ratings on my iPod stay there and my songs in my library stay unrated.
I'd like for there to be an option for this. To be able to transfer song ratings from my iPod to my iTunes library.
Many thanks for the music.

Please teach me how to use this feature because it doesn't work for me. Even after restoring my iPod. Please note, I'm using an iPod Nano and I manually control my library & iPod. There is no syncing of playlists nor libraries.

• Feature request: transplanting architectural state into OpenSPARC

Hi All,
This is a follow-up from our conversation at FCRC/ISCA last week.
I have a feature request for the OpenSPARC RTL, and potentially the FPGA model, which would help researchers experiment with real workloads on OpenSPARC:
I would like to see a process for transplanting checkpointed architectural state of a booted and running T1000/T2000 system (arch. registers, MMU, and memory values) into the OpenSPARC RTL model.
Ideally, this would happen over a socket so the transplant doesn't depend on a particular full-system simulator (e.g., we use Simics/Niagara at CMU, but I expect that many people would like to interface with SAM).
I attempted this on my own a few months ago, with limited success. I wrote Verilog PLI/socket code that 1. slams many of the architectural registers and MMU and 2. replaces the interface in dimm.v with socket calls to a remote Simics instance (non-trivial code, has to reconstruct the phys addr and ECC bits to work properly). Much of this actually worked. I was not, however, able to redirect the core's PC to a new location and properly initiate an i-cache miss.
Perhaps someone with a better understanding of the fetch/thread select stages knows the right combination of registers, valid bits, fetch/miss queue entries could make this work...
Brainstorm:
An alternative approach (which avoids many, but not all, dependencies on the specific RTL revision and is arguably superior to my first approach) might be to write a hyper-privileged "context switch" ASM routine to load architectural state and get the processor boostrapped at a new PC.
This program could be like the usual validation test program, except it loads registers/MMU state from the hijacked DRAM model. Once these values have been loaded into the core, the caches can be invalidated to remove these temporary values (trivial with PLI code), and the full-system memory image can be enabled in the DRAM model.
I can make my code available, if desired.
Thanks!

Hi Jared,
Thanks for following up on this.
There could be wider interesting in this work and we feel that it makes a very good OpenSPARC based community project that can be hosted on opensparc.net.
If you are interested in contributing the code and taking it forward then we can get it hosted and have right people from Sun help you in making it a successsful one.
I will send you separate email on this topic.
Thank You.

• Importing iTunes songs into FCP6

i queried, but didn't find much on bringing audio (purchased songs) from iTunes 8 into FCP6.
i tried using the convert to aiff format in iTunes. some songs are protected, as well. any way to convert them for importing into FCP6?
didn't seem like it was this painful the last time i bought audio into the timeline from iTunes.
thanks

agree that i don't own it, but to use it in a timeline on my computer isn't any different than playing that same music back through the same computer using iTunes.
Wrong. Listening to the music on your computer, or iPod or car stereo is one thing, but using it in a video...tying it to picture that you intend to show to people...no can do. You can in iMovie...because Apple doesn't seem to care if you use it for home movies. But FCP is professional software, so Apple doesn't allow you to use music in professional productions.

• Import iTunes movie into iMovie or Motion

I am a teacher and I wanted to show the movie Hocus Pocus to the kids at my elemtary school. But the school doesn't allow movies with ANY language. I would like to be able to import this movie into iMovie '11 or Motion 5 and block out the cuss words. This is a protected MPEG 4 video, so, none of these programs will let me do this! Any suggestions? (Please don't recomend any video convertors unless they're free, don't have a time limit, and will work with protected MPEG's) THANKS!

You cannot edit the movies and you cannot legally remove the DRM.
You can't show movies in school unless it is part of the curriculum (the movie actually pertains to the studies). Simply for entertainment is not permissible (without copright owners permission).

• Feature request : import/export .idea files with ITunes

I know that you wants to developp your own cloud system but a possibility to import or export idea files between the mac and the Ipad would be very usefull for me. Thanks

Yes Ma'am you are misunderstanding. In my case, because of a botched screen repare my ipad now has No wireless connectivity at all. The place that replaced the screen is over 70 miles away. Being as unlike Photoshop touch which has the option to sync projects through iTunes. I can not get the vectorized verzions of my Adobe Ideas projects off my device.
It really should be a simple update to the app. Which would be far cheaper for Adobe to implement, than me buying a new ipad. All my other apps that allow me to crreate content allow for itunes syncing of projects.
Then even if my ipad still had wireless connectivity some projects could easily be over the email size limit.
What would really be the ultimate answer to this issue would be on device syncing between Adobe Ideas and Photoshop touch. Just like can be done with Photoshop and Illustrator.
Adobe has to realise that the app market really is more profitable than their computer program market. Being as many many more people WILL pay the smaller price. Which opens up their market to way more customers. Add in the new ipad air's 64 bit architeture, and it's almost (almost not entirely) more advantagous to push the apps to full Adobe master collection status, and ability. It's almost a no brainer, being as it's much mich cheaper for anyone to get an ipad, a good palm canceling stylus and some apps. Than it is to buy a computer, a Cintiq, and Adobe master collection. Oh, but, if after going the cheaper route people got use to using and creating with the apps, they would be far more likely to then get all the more expensive counterparts. Though one has to see that by Wacom putting out their own tablets, the touch screen tablet market is the most cost effective and highest unit moving market.

• Importing iTunes songs into Final Cut

Because the file is locked, I can't open a song with Final Cut Express. That's the whole reason I bought the song, now I can't use it! Any advice out there?

See if you can upgrade the track to iTunes Plus, which is of high quality and, more importantly, has no copy protection. Sign into the iTunes Store and click the Upgrade to iTunes Plus link under the Quick Links at the upper-right.
Note that even without copy protection, the tracks from the iTunes Store are still licensed only for your personal use and cannot be used in any movie project that you intend to give away or post/play in any public venue.

• Importing ITunes clips into FCP project

Hello everyone,
is it possible to import an ITunes purchased song into the timeline of FCP? And if yes, what happens if I am exporting a videoclip? Will it actually work?
I purchased some songs on ITunes I want to use in a video project and now I am realizing that it might not work because of the copy protection.

you've got a few things going against you here ...
amongst them is the high likelyhood that you have not got the license to use the music clip in your video production, that the use of mp3 compressed audio is not viable in FCP, and yes, the tracks are copy protected (for good reason)

• Why can't I import itunes files into garageband 11?

I am trying to import songs or parts of songs from iTunes into GarageBand so that I can create some ringtones.
GarageBand (11) is not allowing me to drop & drag songs to it!?
The songs I am using ARE NOT protected. Some have been purchased, but I always find the 10-20 seconds that I want first, go into the get info/options of the song, choose the timestamp for the potion of the song, & then create an AAC version of the snippet. I then wo,d import the smaller file of the selected part of the song that I wanted.
I previously had been able to. Now I cannot? I used to also us mp3s, but recently read in a forum that they needed to be AAC files.
Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know a solution?
It use to be so easy to create ringtones. Now GarageBand won't let me.
Please help!

@LeonieDF: What is "hidden user library"? Where can I find that?
I meant the your User Library; it depends on the operating system if it is hidden or not - since MacOS 10.7 Lion the User Library is hidden.
The "Preferences" subfolder you need to access is located in
Your Home Folder -> Library -> Preferences
If you are using MacOS Lion you access this folder using the Finder's Go menu:
Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder
Then hold down the "Option" key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu, select "Library", then proceed as above.

• Importing iTunes video into iMovie?

I am putting together a movie, and want to splice some parts of a music video into it. I purchased the video from iTunes, but I cannot import it into iMovie. I suspect it has to do with copyright protection, and that it is a .mv4 file. But since I purchased it I figured I should be able to use it?
Thoughts?
roger

So I figured, Gee how did miss that in the iTs Terms of Use, I read those documents so carefully...
Actually, I can take an iTunes purchased music tune and take it into Garage Band and edit it, so I figured this model might apply to a video into iMovie.
thanks
