Feature Request: Import Sidecars When Updating PSE 8 Catalog

I am working to get a usable Lightroom catalog when updating from PSE 8.  I have tens of thousands of raw files, several thousand video files in the catalog, almost all of which have an accompanying THM and/or XMP file in the same Windows folder as the photo or video file.  PSE, of course, doesn't deal with sidecars, but I would have expected Lightroom to check for the sidecar, just as it does with a regular import of those files.  Or at least allow you to ask it to discover sidecars from the library menu after the catalog has been updated.
I would re-import the files to get the metadata from the sidecars, but then I would lose all the tags, captions and other metadata I've built up in the PSE catalog.  Lightroom doesn't give the option to "Read Metadata from File" for video files, but when I use on my raw files, it does not attempt to discover any existing sidecar files.  The XMP sidecars would be especially helpful because they contain the PSE data (including date/time changes, keywords, etc.) for both raw and video files as written out by PSEDBtool from John Ellis.
If multiple sidecars are available for a file (e.g. both a THM and an XMP), I would hope that Lightroom would read both in date order, and apply the metadata in that order.  That is, if the THM is older, read and use that metadata, and then read the XMP, updating any data supplied in that file, so that we get the benefit all all the data available.  In the cases above, there is a lot of camera data in the THM for the video files that is not in the AVI, MOV or XMP files, so I wouldn't want to lose that.

John - Thanks for your helpful responses.  A couple answers to your questions:
I do have XMP sidecars for my raw (and video) files, courtesy of psedbtool.  In addition, most of my raw (and video) files have a .THM file associated with them from the camera itself.  I have done very little with ACR in PSE 8, so I don't believe I have any XMP files from that source.
After converting my PSE 8 catalog to LR 3, I do not see any sidecar extensions in the LR 3 metadata pane, which is leading me to believe that LR 3 has ignored both the XMP and THM sidecars (I would have expected to see both listed).  If I instead import the raw files directly, rather than through the PSE 8 catalog upgrade, then I see both XMP and THM sidecars listed in the EXIF metadata pane.  For raw files, I can't be sure that the sidecars are not being read, because the camera data in them is duplicated in the raw file, and other data such as keywords may be coming straight from the PSE catalog.
By analogy, when I import video files with sidecars directly into LR, the sidecar metadata (both THM and XMP) is definitely imported to LR from the sidecars because that data does not exist in the video file, but it shows up in the LR metadata panel.   If I instead upgrade the PSE catalog containing the videos, only the bare-bones file data comes in with the video files - none of the EXIF data from the sidecars comes in.  LR doesn't even set a valid capture time for sorting in the grid view.
So I am drawing a conclusion that the PSE sidecar raw behavior is the same as the video behavior in this case.  John - are you seeing sidecar extensions in the metadata panel in LR from imported raw files?
Thanks!
Jon

  • Feature request : import of multi-line notes in CSV or tab-delimited file

This is a feature request to the AddressBook development team:
Following a question posted here and asked to support (thanks to Barry and Julia from ADC), it turns out that AddressBook is not ready yet to import multi-line notes from a CSV or tab-delimited file.
I would like to kindly suggest the AddressBook development team to update the import methods for such flat files to parse the text of what is assigned to the Notes field, and convert documented escape sequences to their pre-determined corresponding special character.
I would think that the following would be pretty easy to implement, and easy for the targeted audience (enthousiasts power-users and up) to remember:
    "\n " : mark a new line (same as ^p in Word)
    "\t " : replace by a tab
I would keep the trailing space to avoid problems with DOS-type file path problems.
    and of course...
"\\n " and "\\t " for whoever would want to import notes about \n and \t
For example, in a Notes column, the text:
"Escape sequence \\n :\n move the text to a new line\n \n while escape sequence \\t :\t move the text to the next horizontal tab"
would give the following (just consider text between <Note> marks):
    <Note>
    Escape sequence \n:
move the text to a new line
while escape sequence \t: move the text to the next horizontal tab
    </Note>
    Thanks for reading...

  • Feature request: disable passcode when on home wifi

With all the sensitive data in my phone, i need to have the passcode on when i'm out and about. However, i frequently open/close the phone at home to change songs via the remote app, etc.
Has anyone ever heard of a feature/app that allows you to turn off passcode protection when the iphone is on your HOME wifi? This sounds to me like the perfect security solution/compromise.

  • Feature request: import/copy locked photos only

the option to "import/copy locked photos only" (files that have been locked/tagged by camera) would be helpfull.

I'm sure I've seen that request over on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked, but I can't find it right now.  That would be the best place to add your vote or request as this forum will be closed once the beta's over.

  • Feature Request - Import ITunes m4p into Track

Would like a feature that allowed moving an entire ITunes song into a GB track.

  • Feature request: Importing/backup/archive of tracks with metadata

    Hi everyone,
I've found that one of the things iTunes does better than any other music player is handling and organising song information. Have you ever seen a PC user's jukebox? Thos things are a real mess, with cryptic track names ("mike mills - air - talkie walkie - 05"), artists in the album column, etc...
All of this information which describes the file itself is called "meta-data", and iTunes handles meta-data in two seperate places: the song file itself (ID3 tags in MP3s, for instance) and the iTunes library file.
You'll notice that when you drag a music file from one iTunes library to another, the meta-data stored in the file itself is preserved (artist, title, track number, etc...), while the meta-data stored in the iTunes library isn't (your rating, the play count, the last date played, etc...).
What I'm suggesting here is a feature that allows one to:
    (a) make a folder / burn a disk with the song files AND a special iTunes meta-data (XML?) file, so that all meta-data is preserved,
    (b) optionally delete the music files from your library after backup (i.e. archiving), and naturally,
    (c) open and read backup/archive folders and disks, and allow one to reintegrate songs, playlists or the entire collection back into one's main music library.
I hope Apple is listening, because I think this feature would be really easy to implement, and would make a lot of people (especially those who keep their music spread across 2 or more computers) very happy!
I've already set up a smart playlist ("Give me 4.5 GiB of disabled (unchecked) tracks from my library, sorted by least recently added") that gives me the candidates for archival. Now, all I'm hoping for is a button that allows me to archive (move) everything to a DVD, clear some space on my PowerBook hard drive and rest assured that if I ever want to go back and retrieve a track, it'll be waiting, with the playcounts, song information and ratings all intact!
...either that or make all hard drives at least 1000 times bigger. I'm not picky.
    Cheers,
    - tonyboy

    Thank you for an idea!
I wrote a simple script to get metadata from files and offset AE clip times respectively. It is quite dirtycoded but does the job for me. Maybe someone will want to use this script, so I put it on a public accessible URL: http://zig-zag.ru/usefulshit/ae/xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    My workflow is as follows:
    - I separate camera footages (.mov, .jpg, etc...), and put them to folders like camera_01, camera_02 etc
    - create new project in AE, new composition - named "camera_01_p1", import files from camera_01 folder to a project panel, drag'n'drop them to a compo, select "camera_01_p1" compo and run xmp_time_shifter.jsx
    - I have 8 hours of footage, so I duplicate "camera_01_p1" composition, name it "camera_01_p2", delete all layers but unshifted ones, rerun time shifter script, repeat with the rest
    - do the same with camera_02 (don't forget to adjust still photo layer duration before time shifting)
    - export to a premiere project (yeah, thank you for this one!)
    - then I open project in premiere, copy everything to a same sequence (different layers where needed)
    - last thing is to sync entire video and photo layers at some known moment - it is done easily by placing marker at some time feature on different video/audio clips, and manually shifting entire layer to sync
    - profit!
Since we are allready offtopic to premiere, I place some of my notes here:
    - XMPFile function does not read files like "/d/path" on my windows 7, so I replaced them with "d:/"
    - don't understand why, but this check - if(fname != null){ is not working. So script will fail on compositions with solid, null, etc. layers.
    - I wrote simple date parser that is currently working with Nikon D3 (.jpg) and Canon 5D mk2 (.mov) but it can fail on some other models/formats.

  • Feature-Request: Ignore or disable updates that are flagged "allowedOffline=false"

Updates (packages in MDT terms) that contain 'allowedOffline="false"' in their update.mum file will make the OS installation stop in the offline servicing phase (KB2533552 is an example). Wouldn't it be reasonable to check this flag when importing the
updates and disable the package in MDT or even refuse to import? Would make my workflow "grab all the updates *.cab detected by Windows Update from the SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and import them in MDT" a lot easier.

+1,000 I agree 100%. This is something simple that should be implemented into MDT.
I just upgraded my capture deployment share and was really really hoping that this would have been implemented by now.

  • Feature request : import/export .idea files with ITunes

I know that you wants to developp your own cloud system but a possibility to import or export idea files between the mac and the Ipad would be very usefull for me. Thanks

Yes Ma'am you are misunderstanding. In my case, because of a botched screen repare my ipad now has No wireless connectivity at all. The place that replaced the screen is over 70 miles away. Being as unlike Photoshop touch which has the option to sync projects through iTunes. I can not get the vectorized verzions of my Adobe Ideas projects off my device.
It really should be a simple update to the app. Which would be far cheaper for Adobe to implement, than me buying a new ipad. All my other apps that allow me to crreate content allow for itunes syncing of projects.
Then even if my ipad still had wireless connectivity some projects could easily be over the email size limit.
What would really be the ultimate answer to this issue would be on device syncing between Adobe Ideas and Photoshop touch. Just like can be done with Photoshop and Illustrator.
Adobe has to realise that the app market really is more profitable than their computer program market. Being as many many more people WILL pay the smaller price. Which opens up their market to way more customers. Add in the new ipad air's 64 bit architeture, and it's almost (almost not entirely) more advantagous to push the apps to full Adobe master collection status, and ability. It's almost a no brainer, being as it's much mich cheaper for anyone to get an ipad, a good palm canceling stylus and some apps. Than it is to buy a computer, a Cintiq, and Adobe master collection. Oh, but, if after going the cheaper route people got use to using and creating with the apps, they would be far more likely to then get all the more expensive counterparts. Though one has to see that by Wacom putting out their own tablets, the touch screen tablet market is the most cost effective and highest unit moving market.

  • Error when updating PSE 9.x

I keep getting the error below when I attempt to install the update.  Sony VAIO, I7 processor. NVIDIA Geforce, running Windows 7 64-bit..  Any and all help is much appreciated.

Yes the dialog lets you choose which products to update. Simply expand the dropdown choices and check the boxes for the ones you want.
For example I never bother updating camera raw unless I’m purchasing a new camera model.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: "Only backup when connected to the following network: "

Time Machine is preparing for backups *all week long* for backups that will ALWAYS FAIL because I am not at home connected to my home network where my backup drive is.
The calculating that goes along with preparing for a backup slows my machine down very noticeably.
This is very frustrating as I must turn Time Machine off, and then hope i remember to turn it back on each night when I return home from work.

  • Feature request - page centered when turning the page

I routinely enlarge pages in PDF files so that they bleed off the top and bottom of the screen. I lose the white space at the top and bottom of the page, in order to make the text in the middle clearer. This requires using the up and down arrows.
It would be great if Acrobat could intelligently present a page, perhaps as an option, so that the printing appears on the screen instead of white space. Particularly in the non-scrolling view, where one really is turning pages. The software would judge what part of the page was interesting and center it vertically around the interesting features.
Thank you for considering this suggestion.

  • Canon 70D - firmware feature request - separate photo / video picture style

    Hello, Canon.
I dont know, if there is a dedicated way of making a feature request for a firmware update?
I have a simple problem, so please take a look at it. When I choose a picture style in photo mode, the same style is activating for the video mode and vice-versa.
The previous camera that I had, the 60D, was remembering the video and the photo picture style separately.
I will appreciate it, if you make this behaviour available for the 70D.
It can cause a headache, if you need to shoot a video with a custom picture style, but then forget to turn it off for a photo shoot, or the other way around.
    Thanks.

I wouldn't get your hopes up though, Canon doesn't really do a lot of feature add-ons through firmware, mostly they just put bandaides on mistakes.
Although there are exceptions. The firmware updates for the 7D, 5DIII and 1DX among them.

  • Feature Request: Add multiple photos to catalog at once

The API currently allows you to use catalog:addPhoto() to add a single photo to the catalog.
This works fine, but a poor user experience when adding a number of photos (esp. dozens or hundreds) - there's a separate child progress bar for each, masking the overall progress, and if the user has a sound enabled on import, it plays the sound on each photo import. If there were a way to import multiple photos at once (or API options/params to disable both of the feedbacks), this would make for a better UX when importing a lot of pictures.

Sorry. I'm having a hard time finding my way around these forums, and the search is less than helpful.
Please point me in the right direction.
Edit: I found the correct forum now, and have recreated my feature requests there and deleted them from this forum (with the exception of this thread, which I can't delete at this point). My apologies.

  • Feature Requests: "Last Import" shortcut / Last visited collections in "New Coll." dialog

i think this isn't not only my personal workflow and others would be happy about this minor improvements:
    1. after an import of photos from the memory card i'm usually separate them into several new collections. after naming them i'm pointing to an existing collection set.
here i always need to scroll around in the pulldown menu of the new collection dialog to find the desired set. this menu is growing longer and longer with my nearly 100k photos.
it would be extremely nice to have displayed here some, let's say, top 5 or 10 collection sets i've visited to get quickly to a set where to drop the new collection.
such kind of history is already availabe in the left hand pulldown menu above the film strip. so it shouldn't be difficult to integrate this in the new collection dialog.
additionally a structured menu would be better there than the current view with all collection sets folded out.
additionally think about the mac-like navigation through folders in the finder with the cursor keys: up/down to move in the set structure, right to go into a set, left to move one level up.
    2. after having dropped a new collection into a set i usually need to go back to the last import section of the library to continue my work. this is possible only by clicking in the catalog panel or by choosing last import from the left hand pulldown menu above the film strip. here a keyboard shortcut would be a huge time saver.

You've got some nice ideas there.  As they may not make the final release, and this forum will be closed down once the beta is over, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request.

  • I can't stack photos (previously in version sets) imported via "Upgrade PSE Catalog". Why not?

I am currently using LR 3.6 on a Windows 7 OS/ HP laptop.  Previously, I organized my photos using PSE 9 Organizer.  When I switched to LR 3, I selected the option to upgrade my PSE Catalog to bring my photos into LR.  LR imported all the photos and keywords/ratings but not my version sets or smart albums.  I understand LR doesn't have version sets so I was willing to manually restack my photos but now LR is not giving me that option.  Any pictures that were previously in a PSE version set are showing as unstackable (all the stack options are grayed out) even if they are located in the same folder on my hard drive.  I'm having trouble finding anything on the web that addresses this issue.  Any help/direction would be much appreciated as my catalog is rather cumbersome at the moment.
    Thank you,
    Sierra

If dj_paige's suggestions don't help, check to make sure that Lightroom thinks both photos are in the same folder. When I converted from PSE 8, I had some photos in version sets in the same actual folder that LR thought were in different folders whose name differed only by case (e.g. "MyFolder" and "myfolder").  Thus, LR refused to stack the photos upon catalog conversion.
You can check this by selecting each of the suspsect photos in turn, right-clicking, and selecting Go To Folder In Library.
