FEATURE REQUEST: Preserve Transparency of Files when Opening As Layers in Photoshop

I am a digital scrapbooker and I have begun using Lightroom to organize my digital scrapbooking supplies. A file format that is very common in digital scrapbooking is PNG format. However, PNG is not setup to accept metadata so part of my workflow is converting the PNG files to PSD files to retain the transparency and adding the ability to add metadata.
This works very well for me - when I want to scrapbook, I can search for my supplies by color, etc. and then choose Edit In, etc. The biggest drawback is that I can't do Edit In > Open As Layers in Photoshop without losing the transparency in the PSD (formerly PNG file). The transparency is retained when I choose Edit In> Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5 > Edit Original.
So if you all could do something to preserve the original and still open it as layers in Photoshop, that would be wonderful!

Another request that goes along with this one - is allowing transparent files to retain their transparency in the Print Module. I am building storyboards and would love to be able to add a transparent TIF or PSD file on top of photos before printing.

Any solutions for lost render/preview files when opening files?s

Have any solutions been found for the intermittent lost render/preview files when opening a large file? I have Premiere CS6. A large project file that I have been working on lately opened without a hitch with previews intact ...until I bought new faster hard drives and rebuilt the computer (built with the same drive letters). I just installed the latest updates. When I now open this file, a segment of the sequence always opens without previews, unrendered, no matter how many times I rendered the file previously. I don't use 3rd party plugins. I am using the warp stabilizer. I tried all the suggestions that I have found on the forums (using a blank sequence to close and open, unchecking “write XMD…” etc.) but none work. I checked the render/preview drive, and these files are on that drive but they will no longer link to the project. It now takes a good 15 minutes to re-render every time I open.

I may have found a solution. I took out the warp stabilizer, and then added it back in on the clips in question, and then re-analysed and re-rendered. So far, so good. It seems that bringing in the warp stabilizer effect in the file into the re-built computer needed re-analysing (as I do after this 2 day exercise.)

Specific size for Open as Layers in Photoshop

Using Export/Edit In/Open as Layers in Photoshop, is it possible to set a specific image size so that all files open the same size?
This would be great as I only need small files to make a collage out of many files both small and very large ones.

Open as layers in Photoshop does not apply adjustments

I adjust two images in LR4 then select the images, right click, choose Edit In->Open as Layers in Photoshop. The images open and stack as requested but no Lightroom adjustments are applied to either image.Single images opened for Photoshop give the choice to "Render using Lightroom" , "Open Anyway" or "Cancel". Images opened as layers only give the "Open Anyway" or "Cancel" Choices.
Is this behavior expected?

It's because there isn't a fully compatible version of ACR yet. Once the final release comes out and you update to a compatible ACR version, it'll work. At the moment ACR doesn't know what to do with the new settings.

Photo - Edit in - Open as Layers in Photoshop

Photo -> Edit in -> Merge to Panorama in Photoshop
Photo -> Edit in -> HDR Pro in Photoshop
Photo -> Edit in -> Open as Layers in Photoshop
are all dimmed. How do you un dim them??

Those 3 options need more than one image selected to become active.

Can't open RAW file when moved from Lightroom to Photoshop CS4

I have a Canon 6D and recently purchased Lightroom 4.4 so that I could open my Canon RAW files. They do open in Lightroom, but when I move them to PHotoshop CS4 I can't open the files. I get a message telling me I can't open them. Any suggestions?

I don't know Macs so can't give you advice if CS6 will run on your Mac.
But since you have Lr5 you won't need to open Raw images in Photoshop. Lr5 gives you all the Raw editing capabilities that you need. I don't think CS6 will add anything to Raw editing capabilities that Lr5 doesn't have - although I don't know CS6 since I am still working with CS5.
You still can send images from Lr5 to CS4 for editing but you have to select <Render using Lightroom> in the dialog that says that the "Camera raw plug-in 8.1 may be required ...". BTW: what this means is that the Camera raw plug-in 8.1 is required for Photoshop, not for Lr.
When you select <Render using Lightroom> Lr will create a TIFF / PSD from the Raw image and send it to CS4 for editing.
If you had CS6 Lr would send the Raw image to CS6 but on saving the edits in CS6 a TIFF / PSD would be created.
The only drawback with using CS4 is that the options <Merge to Panorama ...>, <Merge to HDR ...>, and <Open as layers> will be greyed-out and are not available.
If instead of selecting <Render using Lightroom> in the dialog box you would select <Open anyway>, nothing would happen. CS4 would open but the image would not be displayed in CS4.

When opening an image in Photoshop CC, the file appears at a size many times larger than the file I'm opening: a 1mg file opens as 9mg. This started in the past few days. What has happened?

My files have suddenly started opening in Photoshop CC in a much larger size: a 1mg file will open as 9mg, for instance. The more layers I add, the more the multiplication until I'm up so large the program closes down. This never happened before and I don't know if I've changed something by accident or what. HELP!

Let's try something easy. Reset your preferences.
If in Windows, close Photoshop, then double click the PS icon to start it.
Now very quickly hold down the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys, and you will see a delete settings dialog where you would answer "Yes".
See if that fixes it, if not...we will need more information:
Adobe product and version number
Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
Screenshots of the problem
Computer hardware, such as CPU; GPU; amount of RAM; etc.

Sort order of files when opening a document within a program

When opening Explorer, files are correctly sorted in alphabetical order.
When opening a document (say within Word), if I search a folder then the files/folders are in a strange sort order - something like last used or modified. I don't know how this happened. I want them sorted alphabetically like in Explorer.
What do I need to do? I'm fed up of having to sort every folder each time I open it within a program.

Feature Request: AME Watch Folders file type filter

Hi,
maybe I'm posting it to the wrong forum. If so, maybe some moderator can move this thread to the correct forum.
I'm exporting Quicktime Reference files from Avid, which creates two files: .mov and. wav. Since I'm exporting it to Watch Folder AME automatically converts the wav also. But would be useful to "tell" AME only convert files with mov extension. It's of course possible later to erase encoded sound files but would be convinient to point out only the file types which require converting.

My son's yearbook publisher wants TIF images. Try as I might,
I can't seem to VIEW TIF files in Fireworks or Freehand.
All I see is a box with multi-colored dots when opened.
ANy ideas what the problem might be? Thanks.

Not sure but maybe some exotic compression? Where did you get
that TIFFs
and how they were prepared?

Passing a parameter to an Excel file when opening it

I would like to know if it is possible to pass a parameter to an Excel file when calling that file from within another Excel file using VBA. I am using the 2007 version. An example of what I would like to do is what we use to do with DOS programs and command
line parameters. I would like to have the Excel file I just opened do something depending on the parameter passed to it and then close.
Might be an easy question but I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Makes Duplicate Of File When Opening Pictures On A PC

I have photos and an external hard drive. When I either select the photos in the library and drag them to the desktop, or select the photos and do an export it does export the files to the external hard drive. When I open it on the mac there is only 1 of each file there. When I plug it into the PC and view the folder with the files in it there is a duplicate of each. The weird thing though is for example if I have a file named picture1.jpg it has that in there but also creates a ._picture1.jpg
What does it create that duplicate file with the ._ before it?
When I plug it back into the mac that ._ file is not there.

Mac OS stores "resource forks" (icons) in image files but PC users get two files when they are shared via HD, CD and even when using a PC to view the contents of any Mac directory on a PC.
My simple fix is to "delete" the resource fork prior to sharing with PC users so they don't get confused.
CMM's can do this with a right click prior to sharing and most image apps can also delete that resource fork file.
Mac Mail app allows the "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" which also removes the resource fork file so viewers are not confused.

Corrupt file when opened in Ai

I have a problem with a file that appears to be corrupt and not rendering correctly when brought into Illustrator.
When It was last synced it appeared in CC as below with no thumbnail version.
When emailed and opened in Acrobat the file renders correctly.
However when the PDF is opened in Ai the fill for the branches is not correct.
Outline view shows that this is not an errant fill problem and that the detail is not retreivable.
When opened from the .idea in Illustrator file it renders as below
Outline view shows only a few branches and some artifacts where they should be
As does highlighting the branch layer
The file appears to be correct on my iPhone and I have synced several times in case it was corrupted in the sending but it has not rectified this problem.

The file does not look to be corrupt on the Ideas side. However, your .idea file does have several paths that have a very large number of points. You may be experiencing either a predefined limit in Illustrator or simply a bug in the Ideas import plug-in for Illustrator. We will follow up with the Illustrator team to verify.
In the meantime, I have tried to work around the issue by exporting the problematic layer as an image, opened that image in Illustrator, and performed "Live Trace" on it. Then, I recombined it with the other layers. I have shared the .ai file on my Creative Cloud account to you in a separate email.

Stop Excel changing a file when opened

Is there a way to stop Excel (and possibly Word too) changing the Excel file when you open it, and then close it without saving.
Excel updates the last opened date, and does not change the update date. Like this: http://spreadsheetpage.com/index.php/oddity/who_last_opened_that_file/
I do not want this to occur as I have a sync'ing system which creates unessisary noise, and it also causes sync issues and merge conflicts for changes that are not changes.
Can you turn it off?
