Feature Request: Scan attached drives to automatically find and reconnect "missing" images

This is the kind of thing that computers are good for. I'm surprised that we've made it all the way to version 5 without this feature being added.  It would be relatively easy.
Scan the catalog to make an internal list of all images that are "missing" (the raw file is not found where the catalog says it should be).
Scan the attached hard drives and make an internal list of all images on the system.
Compare the file names, sizes and dates of all of the found images and match them up.
You could provide a UI to confirm the reconnected images, or simply do it automatically.  If desired, you could use EXIF data in the images to help confirm that the proper images are being connected.  In fact, this step could be used as an "advanced" option to find images where the filename has changed.
Thanks for your consideration!
David Terry
(an original Raw Shooter and RawShooter/Pro user - which Adobe purchased and turned into Lightroom 1.0 - it's been a wonderful ride so far!)

Eliminating step 2 eliminates the security of an immediate backup.  I don't want to ever tell a customer that I lost their images.  The backup is done just as soon as possible.
Doing the processing on the SSD while having backed up to storage lets me get through thousands of images on a weekly basis (all things related to weddings as well as family portraits, seniors and the like).
The syncing process is automated (in fact, most of my processes are).  It keeps *me* fast and efficient.
So why argue against a tool that can benefit not only me but others that have lost their images (for reasons having nothing to do with me or my workflow)?  I am involved in many forums and have frequently helped people to find their lost images.  I love that Lightroom easily reconnects the images.  The only hard part is finding what happened to them (often they did a bonehead drag and drop of a folder and moved the images somewhere they didn't expect, sometimes they changed drive letters, sometimes they purposely move files and just don't realize the repercussions).
ALL of these people would benefit from adding this feature.
Why try to argue against it?  I don't need a solution to my workflow.  I love my workflow.  I just think this feature would be beneficial to me and lots of other people.
Thanks for understanding.

  • Feature requests: Getting Here Drive to a baseline...

    OK, Here Drive works reasonably well and stable with the feature set it has, but it still has a long way to go, just to be close to par with e.g. my Garmin Nuvi 350 bought 7 years ago, or even an old app like Mapopolis for Windows Mobile, also available 5-6 years ago (but now gone broke)... Is it possible to soon get at least get to a baseline that makes it usable also for longer international travel, e.g. going on summer vacation across Europe vs. just being useful for some local travel? This would require:
    Search by categories of POIs rather than having to know it by name, e.g. find nearest hotels, gas station or place to eat (restaurants not even available today in the map overlays!) - sorted by distance
    Find POIs along the route, e.g. within 2km of route rather than based on current location, again to know when you will pass e.g. the next gas station (super critical when driving on vacation across Europe)
    At least 1 via point, so you can plan a stop over and still know your arrival at final destination.
    Planning mode for routing by setting both a start and destination rather than all routes calculated must be from current position
    Telling whether destination is on left or right side of road
    That would bring Here Drive to at least the entry level of the cheapest dedicated navigation systems. Some additional features that would move it a little up the stack ranking includes:
    Traffic information displayed and taken into account for route suggested (for a mobile unit with data traffic capability I would actually consider this a base requirement to just be minimally competitive with the cheapest navigation systems)
    Speed camera alerts
    Multiple via points
    Offline planning of full route and save/import of routes
    Street names spoken in more languages
    Lane assist
    Narrowing searches by country, city name or postal code
    Voice recognition for some of the basic commands while traveling, e.g. nearest gas station
    Finally - would it be possible to get the Danish speech updated? It's horribly incorrect from a grammatical perspective (sometimes bordering embarrassing) and the voice used is also not very good - it's a bit strained and shouting, rather than a calm soothing voice.
    I hope some of this can be prioritized - that would allow be to finally get to just ONE device for everything in the car - music, navigating and obviously calling.
    Sincerely,
    Allan Hvass

    Funny - after my testing out of Nokia Drive+ and realizing all the limitations listed compared to an OLD Garmin Nuvi AND no glimmer of hope or response for a month, I actually went out and bought a Nuvi 3490 instead. I'm currently not using my Nokia Drive for any navigation...
    I could see myself start using it again if some of the features, incl. traffic information being part of routing decisions making it's way back. But for long haul navigation, everything needs to be there, and still the Nuvi 3490 wins hands down. And since that is now already paid for also with life time updates to maps and traffic info, it now requires a signficantly BETTER navigation app to bring me back.
    One thing I would like to see though that will make Nokia my most used daily navigation tool is the Nokia Commute app for Copenhagen area. That apps approach for short haul routine routing is really attractive.
    I originally went for the Nokia Lumia series over competing WP8 vendors due to the strong software add-ons with the mapping functionality being a key factor. There's still many other elemeents that just make Nokia a bit better, but the one I thought was the biggest turned out to not be enough, and that has now put aside as I got a better navigation system than any phone can currently offer - thus making the playing field a little bit more level across WP vendors. Nokia needs to work MUCH harder and faster, if they want to differentiate themselves on mapping / navigaiton. Granted there's other areas like photo quality, social apps, build quality, accessories, etc. I would like to put Nokia Music in there as well, but that has never launched in Denmark after 3 years...
    Sincerely

  • Feature Request:  Standard Keyboard Navigation in Media Browser and Project Panel

    It's been a while since I've had time to submit a feature request.  I've wanted to see this one for a while.  If you agree, please submit your own feature request here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish/
    System Navigational Keyboard Shortcuts in Media Browser and Project Panel
    Windows (and I'm sure Mac) has a standard set of keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts for keyboard and mouse.  I'm so used to using them in daily browsing (both in Windows Explorer and in any web browser) that missing them in the PPr Media Browser, or getting a different result in the Project Panel, is still very jarring and slows my workflow (even after having used Premiere Pro [again] since version CS4).
    I propose that the Media Browser and Project Panel should honor the OS defaults for keyboard and mouse folder/file navigation.  A few of the standard (Windows) keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts are listed below (listed in order of most helpful to my own work):
    Moust Back Button = "BACK"
    ALT + LEFT ARROW = "BACK"
    UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT = steps through the various folders within the view.
    UP, DOWN walks through the directory tree while RIGHT expands the currently selected folder and LEFT contracts that directory (twirl down, etc).
    ENTER opens a folder.
    ALT + UP = "Folder Above"
    ALT + RIGHT ARROW = "FORWARD"
    F2 Renames a folder
    ENTER "takes" that name to the clip. (current functionality used ENTER to rename a file/folder).
    ESC cancels the renaming operation.
    Pressing Enter on any piece of Media or Title, etc should take an "expected" action acording to it's context.  (i.e. ENTER on a video clip would load it inot the Source Monitor.  ENTER on a Title would open it in the Title Editor.  ENTER on a folder would take us into that folder).
    These functions exist in both Windows Explorer as well as most modern Web browsers.  When browsing files and Project folders, it's what I've come to expect.  It's muscle memory, if not intuitive.  I realize that many of these keyboard commands are already in use in other windows/panels of the application, therefore, these commands should be Panel-specific (i.e. ALT+LEFT works differently in the Media Browser and Project Panel than it does on the Timeline/Sequence).  And as always, when making such changes (i.e. changing the behavior of ENTER to F2), this set of keys should be highly configurable based on preference:
    Preference:
    checkbox:  Use OS-specific navigational keyboard and mouse commands in Media Browser and Project Panel
    checkbox:  Use the (very few) "classic" Adobe keyboard commands in the Media Browser and Project Panel
    The most common habit I find myself doing in the Media Browser is clicking the BACK button on my mouse—only to realize, yet again, it doesn't work that way in PPr.
    The most common habit I find myself doing in the Project Panel is pressing F2 to rename a folder/bin.  Of course that doesn't work.  And when I've renamed it, I press ENTER to save the name, but that only moves me to the next folder ready to rename it, too.  I also find, out of habit, I try to navigate the bins using the arrow keys and then open the bin/folder using ENTER.  Instead, my bin is asking for a new name and I hit ESC to avoid renaming it—now THERE's a shortcut that works the way it should.
    I realize this feature may be controversial to some, since it's not the way we're used to doing things in PPr.  However, I'm sure there are just as many out there, like me, who are confounded as to why PPr has never worked with the "conventional" navigation shortcuts found throughout the rest of the operating system, be it Windows or Mac.

  • Automatic Find and Replace

    Is there any way to apply some kind of macro in CS3 that
    would automatically run a list of commands to change things such as
    specific strings of text to specific links I define. For example
    any time the words "Jeff Jefferson" come up in my Dream Weaver HTML
    file they are automatically changed to a link (to bio page) of
    "Jeff Jefferson"?
    I know I can save my find and replace as a query but is there
    a quicker way that can run a list of these find and replace
    commands with a single push of a button?
    Thanks!

    Once you have saved the search pattern, you can, if you wish,
    with one
    push of a button, apply the search and replace to all of the
    web pages
    residing on your computer.

  • Feature request: View layer comps in both Comments and Extract

    Good day,
    I'd like to see the layer comps dropdown duplicated and applied to the Comments panel of Extract, in hopes that when viewing layer comps over the web, there's better, faster performance when reviewing comps. Extract is wonderful, but not everyone on my team needs the tools it offers (just developers, really). Everyone on my team does need to view the layer comps, making the comments section an appropriate home for it.
    Note: I'm not suggesting moving layer comps from Extract to Comments. Please make layer comps available to both.
    Thanks for reading,
    -Brent

    Hi John,
    I visit there for other product feature requests quite often. It unfortunately does not offer Creative Cloud as an option from it's dropdown.
    Perhaps I should request that feature?

  • Feature Request // Book Module: Export as indd file and management

    Book Module: Export as indd file and management
    I would like to request a feature to export a book module as indd file.
    I like PDF's but .indd is nice also so we are able to to more in depth layouts.
    Having Lightoom being able to manage all your pictures and book layouts would be nice, alot of things can be done in one application.
    Another Feature:  Using Lightoom as book layout management.
    Being able to send a page(s) of the book from lightroom into InDesign to do indepth layout and editing, then being able to send it back into lightroom
    Almost similar to how you can send a photo from LR in Photoshop to do indepth editing and then send it back into lightroom.
    This could and will ease the workflow of book management and layout design.  So lightroom will not only be able to manage photos, but also indesign and book layouts.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4238530#4238530

    Why do repeat it here, as you have already filed a feature request for it?
    BTW AFAIK this is already implemented: you can use Adobe Illustrator or InDesign or Opensource Scribus to edit layouts.
    They are just not ready to publish how - another sign of the quality processes at Adobe.
    But you do not send from the book module.
    You create upfront layout templates, which you can import for use inside LR book module.
    This is a one-way street.
    The book module designers did not acknowledge a use case where you might want to fiddle the exact placement of really chosen images.
    It is always you first design a template, then use it.
    Love it or leave it - *change it* is not an option that Adobe seems to give to their beta testers.

  • Finding and deleting unused images

    There's got to be an easy way to find all the unused image
    files (or any other type of file) so that they can be managed - in
    my case deleted. I'm trying to clean up my site - getting rid of
    unused files. I had a lot of selections for images but used only a
    small portion of them. I know if I go one-by-one and delete items
    it will tell me they're linked. But I have aprox 100 unused files
    so I'm looking for a way to automate it. Like in Flash - there's a
    usage count.
    help?
    thanks, Dave

  • Finding and reconnecting to a USB with keystrokes???

    Is there a keystroke command that allows me to find all attached USB devices and reconnect to them?
    Situation: I have a USB flash drive that is very sensitive (old too) and sometimes refuses to work after being pulled out. Sometimes I have 'ejected' the drive and then I needed to get it back because I forgot to add another file. I need a work-around to get it back without having to pull it out and put it back in again.

    The Mac as standard can read FAT16 and FAT32, HFS+, ExFAT, and NTFS, as standard it can write to FAT 16, FAT32, HFS+, and ExFAT but not NTFS.
    Windows as standard can only read and write to FAT16, FAT32, ExFAT, and NTFS.
    As we are talking about Mac and Windows I have skipped over ext3, ext4, and ZFS which neither Mac and Windows natively support.
    It is possible to get sofftware for the Mac to allow it to write to NTFS, it is also possible to get software for Windows to let it read and write HFS+.
    If you want a quick free solution just for exchanging files then use ExFAT which unlike FAT32 supports files bigger than 4GB. If you will be mainly working on the Mac, then get software for Windows to let it read/write HFS+ and similarly if you will be mainly working on the Windows side, then get software for the Mac to let it write to NTFS.
    The idea being to use the drive in the format that best suits the opperating system you mainly use it in and force the other to 'adapt'.

  • How do i find and delete duplicate images in Photos? Help please!!

    With all the image sharing me and other half do my Photos library is FULL of duplicate images.. I need a quick and easy way to find and delete them. I've tried a couple of the free apps in the app store, but because the Photos library isn't a regular folder, they won't work! My library is way to
    big to manually scan through too.
    Any advice would be hugely appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Keith,
    Thanks for the advice! However, it's not possible find the really large files this way since file size is not a smart album option. There are too many movies to find them manually.
    Best regards,

  • How do I find and replace recurring images?

    I was wondering if I could find and replace recurring thumbnails in a document. I actually want to delete the specific thumbnail in mass.

    Then Paste and Match Style option shift command v to remove the graphics.
    It is under the Edit menu of most OSX apps.
    There are also utilities that remove all styles and other formatting automatically for you when you do a simple copy and replace.

    PS The Pages09_UserGuide.pdf is available from under the Help Menu.

  • Automatically zoom and crop an image to fit in a square

    I've got an mx:Image which is loading an image from the web.  I don't know how big the image will be in advance.  I'd like the loaded image to fit within the mx:Image's square frame by zooming and cropping off the sides or top/bottom as needed.  In other words, if the image frame is 64x64 and the loaded image is 70x64, it will be centered and lose a few pixels on the right and left sides.  Is it possible to do automatically?  I've played with maintainAspectRatio and scaleContent but I haven't been able to get what I want.

    In an ideal world we would use a high resolution version with a 100% width set for every device (and screen size). Because of bandwidth reasons, the page should load only a version of the image intended for a specific width range.
    Sometime in the future we will (probably) be able to use this:
    <picture width="500" height="500">
       <source media="(min-width: 45em)" src="large.jpg">
       <source media="(min-width: 18em)" src="med.jpg">
       <source src="small.jpg">
       <img src="small.jpg" alt="">
       <p>Accessible text</p>
    </picture>
    However, this will not yet work. Therefore, ideally, a polyfill picturefill method that works quite well can alternatively be used:
    https://github.com/scottjehl/picturefill
    Solution:
    Call the picturefill.js (see above url for more information and sample code)
    body:
    <span data-picture data-alt="A giant stone face at The Bayon temple in Angkor Thom, Cambodia">
            <span data-src="small.jpg"></span>
            <span data-src="medium.jpg"     data-media="(min-width: 400px)"></span>
            <span data-src="large.jpg"      data-media="(min-width: 800px)"></span>
            <span data-src="extralarge.jpg" data-media="(min-width: 1000px)"></span>
            <!-- Fallback content for non-JS browsers. Same img src as the initial, unqualified source element. -->
            <noscript>
                <img src="external/imgs/small.jpg" alt="A giant stone face at The Bayon temple in Angkor Thom, Cambodia">
            </noscript>
        </span>
    This works in all browsers and devices. On a mobile platform only the lower resolution image will be loaded up.

  • I accidentally erased my segate external hard drive out of finder, and I do not know how to get it back!

    I was playing around with finder this evening and I dragged 'segate' out from under devices to my desktop and it popped and made the trash sound. It is not in my trash bin and I unplugged the hard drive and plugged it back in again and still does not show up on finder.I can no longer back up my files because it wont read the segate but still pops up in disk utility. How do I add it back to finder?

    I tried that and it still does not pop up or allow me to back up to the computer but the light is turned on for the hard drive

  • How can I turn off inherent features of Firefox? (Specifically, it automatically loads and displays the next page, but it will load OVER the current page)

    With this version of Firefox, it automatically loads the 'next' page. When I'm reading blogs, when I click to go back, it automatically loads the first page of the blog as the 'next' page I want to go to. However, it will load this page OVER the page I am on, so that I cannot see it. With some blogs, it is so extreme, I cannot use Firefox on them at all. This isn't an add-on or anything, and I cannot find it in the preferences panel. Can I turn it off somehow/is there a way to in Firefox 4?

    That is not standard behavior. You may have installed an extension that causes it.
    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Feature Request: Provide search functionality to procedures, functions and keywords in code

    Have been using SQL Server since 1998, and been wondering why MS cant better the GUI , in terms of ease of use, as its done in Visual Studio and other such tools, though there are some enhancements like multiple window etc, would expect few more for easy
    working for developers.
    1) A search text box, in the SSMS interface, for searching stored procedures, functions, tables etc would be very useful, instead of expanding the entire tree and going through a long list to find your procedure or table, especially when you have a large
    list of them.
    2) Also a code search tool, like to find a keyword in the entire stored procedures, triggers and functions would be useful, currently we had to generate whole script and then find the keyword, and this is cumbersome, as you have to move back and forth to
    find which stored procedure or function has that keyword etc.
    Thanks.

    1. You already have feature in SQL management studio to search for objects using full names or patterns through object explorer
    See
    http://visakhm.blogspot.in/2013/02/object-filtering-using-ssms-object.html
    2. For this you can use the catalog view sys.sql_modules and fire a query on it

  • What protocol does the NI-DSA THD driver (or any harmonic analyzer driver) use to find and interpolate if necessary, harmonic frequences and corresponding amplitudes?

    When using the NI-DSA THD driver to obtain harmonic data, I find that the haromic frequencies found sometimes doesn't come close to the expected harmonic frequency.
    For instance, if I use a 20kHz span and 400 lines of resolution I would expect 50Hz bins. So if my fundamental is 500Hz, I would expect to see 6000Hz at the 12th harmonic but the THD driver can be off by up to 150Hz (ie, 6150Hz or 5850Hz).
    The output of the harmonic analyzer driver is an array of bundled values that contain x0, dx, and a data value array. Is it safe to say I can use this data to calculate exact harmonic test data (ie,
    x0=0, dx=50 so x(10)=harmonic amplitude at 500Hz and x(120)=harmonic amplitude at 6000Hz)?

    If it is that bug, the fix is in 3.17.3 which is in [core] now.
    My experience is crashes like that are usually hardware instability.  Last time it happened to me it was because my RAM.  I had to underclock it to make it stable.  If the kernel update doesn't help you, you could try running a stress test like Prime95.
    http://www.mersenne.org/download/
    If your hardware is unstable it will usually crash after only 5-10 minutes.  If you can run it for multiple hours that can help rule out hardware.
